Surface molecular imprinting on polypropylene fibers for rhodamine B selective adsorption

Synthesis and Properties of Cefixime Core-Shell Magnetic Nano-Molecularly Imprinted Materials

Novel core-shell magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) were synthesized using the sol-gel method for the adsorption of cefixime (CFX). Fe3O4@SiO2 is the core, and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are the shell, which can selectively interact with CFX. The preparation conditions, adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, selective adsorption ability, and reutilization performance of the MMIPs were investigated. The adsorption capacity of MMIPs for CFX was 111.38 mg/g, which was about 3.5 times that of MNIPs. The adsorption equilibrium time was 180 min. The dynamic adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process of MMIPs to CFX conformed to the pseudo-second-order model. Through static adsorption study, the Scatchard analysis showed that MMIPs had two types of binding sites-the high-affinity binding sites and the low-affinity binding sites-while the Langmuir model fit the adsorption isotherms well (R2 = 0.9962). Cefepime and ceftiofur were selected as the structural analogs of CFX for selective adsorption studies; the adsorption of CFX by MMIPs was higher than that of other structural analogs; and the imprinting factors of CFX, cefepime, and ceftiofur were 3.5, 1.7, and 1.4, respectively. Furthermore, the MMIPs also showed excellent reusable performance.

Selective Adsorption of Quercetin by the Sol-Gel Surface Molecularly Imprinted Polymer

Quercetin, as one of the most biologically active natural flavonoids, is widely found in various vegetables, fruits and Chinese herbs. In this work, molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) was synthesized through surface molecular imprinting technology with sol-gel polymerization mechanism on SiO₂ at room temperature using quercetin as the template, SiO₂ as the supporter, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) as the functional monomer, and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) as the cross-linker. The prepared MIP was characterized via scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and nitrogen adsorption measurements to validate its surface morphology, structure and functionality. SEM images revealed that the morphology of MIP was rough and spherical with the particle size of 260 nm larger than that of the support SiO₂. In the FTIR spectra of MIP, the band around 1499 cm^-1 and 2932 cm^-1 were assigned to N-H and C-H groups, respectively. The results indicated that the imprinted polymer layers were grafted on the surface of SiO₂ and the MIP had been successfully prepared. Since the specific surface area and pore volume of MIP were markedly higher than those of NIP and SiO₂ and were 52.10 m² g^-1 and 0.150 cm³ g^-1, respectively, it was evident that the imprinting process created corresponding imprinted cavities and porosity. The MIP for adsorbing quercetin was evaluated by static adsorption experiment. The results indicated that the adsorption equilibrium could be reached within 90 min and the maximum adsorption capacity was as high as 35.70 mg/g. The mechanism for adsorption kinetics and isotherm of MIP for quercetin was proved to conform the pseudo-second-order kinetics model (R² = 0.9930) and the Freundlich isotherm model (R² = 0.9999), respectively, revealing that chemical adsorption and heterogeneous surface with multilayer adsorption dominated. In contrast to non-imprinted polymer (NIP), the MIP demonstrated high selectivity and specific recognition towards quercetin whose selectivity coefficients for quercetin relative to biochanin A were 1.61. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of MIP can be maintaining above 90% after five regeneration cycles, indicating brilliant reusability and potential application for selective adsorption of quercetin.

Uncontrolled Disposal of Used Masks Resulting in Release of Microplastics and Co-Pollutants into Environment

The global panic caused by COVID-19 has continued to increase people’s demand for masks. However, due to inadequate management and disposal practice, these masks have, unfortunately, entered the environment and release a large amount of microplastics (MPs), posing a serious threat to the environment and human health. Understanding the occurrence of mask waste in various environments, release of mask-origin MPs, and related environmental risk is essential to mask-waste management in current and future epidemic prevention and control. This paper focuses on the global distribution of mask waste, the potential release of waste-origin MPs, and the impact on the environment. Specifically, the physical and chemical properties of polypropylene (the most common plastic material in a mask), which show a high adsorption capacity for heavy metals and organic pollutants and play a role as a support for microbial growth, were extensively reported. In addition, several important issues that need to be resolved are raised, which offers a direction for future research. This review focuses on the essentiality of handling masks to avoid potential environmental issues.

Design of 3D-Printed Electronic Fiber Optic Sensor to Detect Rhodamine B Reagent: An Initiation to Potential Virus Detection

A fluorescence device based on ultraviolet light is proposed in this paper, which currently stands at the design stage with the eventual aim to potentially detect virus/antibody fluorescence reactions. The designed device is proposed to have the characteristics of high reflectivity, low power consumption, wide spectrum of light source, and proper silver coating. For fabrication and raising product quality, 3D printing technology and a sputtering test will be used. In this connection, this paper firstly introduces the design sources; then, the ideas of inventing fluorescence detection devices based on ultraviolet light, followed by the data analysis as well as discussing the results of computer simulations. The design process, materials, methods, and experiments are demonstrated following the reality work procedure. Instead of directly using a virus or antibodies for the experiment, at the current design stage, we focus on using this device to detect the rhodamine B reagent. Experiment shows that this reagent can be successfully detected. With this achievement, we logically believe that such type of an ultraviolet optical sensor, with further development and testing, may have the possible value to detect a single virus such as COVID-19, as well as other viruses or small molecules. Though there is long way to go to achieve such a goal, future works experimenting with the detection device on real virus or antibodies can take place more efficiently with a good foundation.

Purification and Characterization of Resistant Dextrin

In this study, an efficient method for the purification of resistant dextrin (RD) using membrane filtration and anion exchange resin decolorization was developed, then the purified RD was characterized. In the membrane filtration stage, suspended solids in RD were completely removed, and the resulting product had a negligible turbidity of 2.70 ± 0.18 NTU. Furthermore, approximately half of the pigments were removed. Static decolorization experiments revealed that the D285 anion exchange resin exhibited the best decolorization ratio (D%), 84.5 ± 2.03%, and recovery ratio (R%), 82.8 ± 1.41%, among all the tested resins. Under optimal dynamic decolorization conditions, the D% and R% of RD were 86.26 ± 0.63% and 85.23 ± 0.42%, respectively. The decolorization efficiency of the D285 resin was superior to those of activated carbon and H2O2. Moreover, the chemical characteristics and molecular weight of RD did not change significantly after purification. The nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of RD showed the formation of new glycosidic linkages that are resistant to digestive enzymes. The superior water solubility (99.14%), thermal stability (up to 200 °C), and rheological properties of RD make it possible to be widely used in food industry.

Adsorption of Chelerythrine from Toddalia asiatica (L.) Lam. by ZSM-5

Separation and purification of active components from biomass by inorganic materials during the pretreatment process of hydrothermal conversion are studied in this work. The batch experiment results show that an initial solution pH of 6 favors chelerythrine adsorption, and the optimum adsorbent dosage is 2.0 g. The adsorption mechanism of ZSM-5 for chelerythrine is investigated by adsorption kinetics, isotherm adsorption models, and thermodynamics analysis. The results show that the kinetics data fit the pseudo-second-order model well (R2 = 0.9991), and the intraparticle diffusion model has 3 diffusion stages, preliminarily indicating that chemisorption plays a major role in the adsorption process, and the sorption mechanism includes intraparticle, external, and boundary diffusion. The adsorption isotherms agree well with the Langmuir model, indicating the occurrence of monolayer molecular adsorption during the adsorption process. Meanwhile, the maximum adsorption capacity is 2.327, 2.072, and 1.877 mg/g at different temperatures (288 K, 298 K, and 308 K), respectively. The thermodynamic data demonstrate that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous in nature. These observed results clearly confirm that ZSM-5 has potential superior properties for the enrichment and purification of alkaloids during the pretreatment of biomass.

PVAm Nanofibers Fabricated by Rotary Jet Wet Spinning and Applied to Bisphenol A Recognition

Poly(vinylamine) (PVAm) is an important polymer with the highest content of primary amine groups of any polymer. PVAm has a great potential in selective separation and smart materials. It is difficult to fabricate pure PVAm nanofibers by electrospinning and rotary jet spinning (RJS) without additional polymers. In this work, rotary jet wet spinning (RJWS) was applied to fabricate molecular imprinting nanofibers (MINFs) with polyelectrolyte for the first time. Initially, optimal parameters of spinning are investigated, including coagulation bath, solution viscosity, and rotation speed. The PVAm aqueous solution is sensitive to alcohol. To demonstrate RJWS application, PVAm-based MINFs for bisphenol A (one endocrine disruptor) recognition are prepared by adding dummy template, cross-linking, and template elution. The association constant (8.6 mg/L), equilibrium time (30 min), and binding sites utilization rate (80%) of MINFs are evaluated. Its adsorption amount and selectivity are little lower than those of MIPs prepared by bulk polymerization; however, its adsorption speed is faster than that of MIPs.

Selective separation and purification of β-estradiol from marine sediment using an optimized core-shell molecularly imprinted polymer

The core-shell molecularly imprinted polymers were optimized to provide reliable connections that allow molecularly imprinted polymers to be fixed on SiO₂ surface for the efficient separation and purification of β-estradiol from marine sediment for the first time. To achieve the goal, different preparation methods were used and finally the polymer using 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane as coupling agent exhibited the best result, which further confirmed that 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane played an indispensable role on improving the inter-particle connections. An offline molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction with high-performance liquid chromatography method was successfully applied to the isolation and enrichment of β-estradiol from marine sediment samples with high adsorption capacity, excellent clean-up efficiency, and great enrichment effect as well as high recovery (>90%) and accuracy (RSD < 8.5%, n = 3). It proved the successful grafting of molecularly imprinted polymers on SiO₂ surface and the applicability of the offline molecularly imprinted solid-phase extraction method in the selective extraction and enrichment of β-estradiol from marine sediment.

A Facile Synthesis of Ion Imprinted Mesoporous Silica Adsorbents by a Co-Condensation Pathway and Application in a Fixed-Bed Column Study for Lead Removal

Highly selective lead ion imprinted mesoporous silica adsorbents (PbII-IMS) were prepared through a co-condensation pathway with 3-(γ-aminoethylamino)propyltrimethoxysilane (AAPTS) (PbII-IMS-NN) and 3-aminepropyltriethoxysilyl (APTES) (PbII-IMS-N) as monomers. The prepared adsorbents were characterised by FT-IR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, power X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption techniques. The results showed that the synthesised adsorbents presented a highly ordered mesoporous structure. In comparison with PbII-IMS-N, PbII-IMS-NN demonstrated a higher adsorption capacity in a series of static and dynamic adsorption experiments, and was further applied to a continuous fixed-bed column study under different conditions. It was found that the breakthrough time of the fixed-bed increased with an increase in bed depth, but decreased with increased flow rate and initial PbII concentration, and the dynamic adsorption data was more consistent with the Thomas model than the Adams–Bohart model. Furthermore, the PbII-IMS-NN showed a greater recognition and binding affinity towards the target lead ions than PbII-IMS-N.

Effect of the sol-gel route on the textural characteristics of silica imprinted with Rhodamine B

A series of silica xerogels that support Rhodamine B as a template were synthesized using distinct sol-gel routes, namely, acid-catalyzed routes, a base-catalyzed route, acid-catalyzed with base-catalyzed (two steps) hydrolytic routes, and a FeCl3 -catalyzed nonhydrolytic route. The extraction methods (thermal, Soxhlet, water washing, and ultrasound) were also evaluated. The resulting xerogels were characterized through porosimetry using nitrogen adsorption/desorption. The samples were further analyzed through small-angle X-ray scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and SEM. The preparation route affected the materials' textural properties. Extraction was optimized using acid and two-step routes. The acid route from Rhodamine B to Rhodamine 6G generated the highest selectivity factor (2.5). The nonhydrolytic route produced the best imprinting factor. Competitive adsorption was also used, from which the approximate imprinting factor was 2. The cavity shape generated during the production of the imprinted silica dictates the adsorption behavior, not the magnitude of the surface area.
