Abstract
Applying an electric field in the membrane filtration was an effective method to alleviate membrane fouling and enhance the trace organic compounds (TrOCs) removal. The secondary effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant was used as feed water to evaluate the performance of the electric field coupled microfiltration system. Applying a 1.25 V voltage reduced 22.9% membrane fouling by electrophoretic force, and the membrane fouling was alleviated by 70.8% at 3 V by electrochemical oxidation and electric field force. At 3 V, active chlorine and hydroperoxide generated on the electrodes and the acidic environment formed around the anode significantly inhibited the growth of microorganisms and their attachment on the membrane surface, and thus reduced the membrane fouling formed by microorganisms. Electrochemical oxidation also removed the protein in wastewater and changed the main organic components of membrane fouling from microorganisms, protein, and polysaccharide to humic substances and polysaccharide. Furthermore, the electrophoretic force and acidic environment reduced the electrostatic repulsion of humic substances and made them tend to aggregate and form hydrophilic porous fouling structures, which obviously lowered filtration resistance and showed significant membrane fouling mitigation. Also, the electric field effectively enhanced the removal of target TrOCs through electrochemical oxidation and electric field force improving the elimination of TrOCs from 8.5% ~ 26.1% at 0 V to 35.9% ~ 84.8% at 3 V.

Abstract
The effects of Ca2+ on membrane fouling and trace organic compounds (TrOCs) removal in an electric field-assisted microfiltration system were investigated in the presence of Na+ alone for comparison. In the electric field, negatively charged bovine serum albumin (BSA) migrated towards the anode far away from the membrane surface, resulting in a 42.9% transmembrane pressure (TMP) reduction in the presence of Na+ at 1.5 V. In contrast, because of the stronger charge shielding of Ca2+, the electrophoretic migration of BSA was limited and led to a neglectable effect of the electric field (1.5 V) on membrane fouling. However, under 3 V applied voltage, the synergistic effects of electrochemical oxidation and bridging interaction between Ca2+ and BSA promoted the formation of denser settleable flocs and a thinner porous cake layer, which alleviated membrane fouling with a 64.5% decrease in TMP and nearly 100% BSA removal. The TrOCs elimination increased with voltage and reached 29.4%-80.4% at 3 V. The electric field could prolong the contact between TrOCs and strong oxidants generated on the anode, which enhanced the TrOCs removal. However, a stronger charge shielding ability of Ca2+ weakened the electric field force and thus lowered the TrOCs removal.

Abstract
Indoor air quality (IAQ) has assumed new significance given the extensive amount of time spent indoor due to the coronavirus pandemic and particulate matter (PM) pollution. Accordingly, the development of window air filters to effectively intercept PM from outdoor air under natural ventilation conditions is an important research topic. However, most existing filters inevitably suffer from the compromise among filtration capability, transparency, and air permeability. In this study, we fabricate a high-performance transparent air filter to improve IAQ via natural ventilation. polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) superfine nanofibers of size 20-35 nm are prepared using extremely dilute solution electrospinning; a multi-scale nanofiber structure is then designed. By adjusting the ratio of PVDF superfine nanofibers (SNs) to PVDF coarse fibers (CNs), we balance the structure-performance relationship. Benefiting from the multiscale structural features that include a small pore size (0.72 μm) and high porosity (92.22%), the resulting filters exhibit excellent performance including high interception efficiency (99.92%) for PM0.3, low air resistance (69 Pa), high transparency (∼80%) and stable filtration after 100 h of UV irradiation. This work describes a new strategy for the fabrication of nanofibers with true-nanoscale diameters and the design of high-performance air filters.

Abstract
The degradation of two of the most frequently used UV-filters was investigated through microcosm studies. Marine sediments sampled from two sites in Italy (La Spezia harbour and Sarno river estuary, S1 and S2 respectively) were used to set up aerobic and anaerobic sets of reactors. The sediments were spiked with a methanol solution of 3-(4-methylbenzylidene)camphor (4-MBC) and 2-ethylhexyl 4-(dimethylamino)benzoate (EH-DPAB), at concentrations of either 25 or 50mgkg-1 each. Methanol (6.3g/L) also served as an organic amendment and growth substrate for improving microbial activity. Monitoring of the biotic and abiotic degradation of the selected contaminants over 16months revealed that 4-MBC biodegradation was very slow and incomplete, whereas over 90% of EH-DPAB was degraded both in the aerobic and the anaerobic reactors by the natural microbial communities of both sediments. Repeated spikes of EH-DPAB were followed by complete decay, characterised by first-order kinetics. The calculated kinetic rate constants under aerobic and anaerobic conditions were similar. In reactors inoculated with the S1 sediment the degradation rate constants progressively increased after each spike, up to the value of 0.039d-1. For the S2 sediment the rate constant was around 0.020d-1 throughout the duration of the experiment. Mass spectrometry analysis of sediment extracts allowed detection of potential transformation products of EH-DPAB and 4-MBC. Moreover, the natural microbial community of the sediments was studied using the CAtalyzed Reporter Deposition Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (CARD-FISH) both in the initial sediments and after degradation under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
