An Integrated Experimental and Computational Platform to Explore Gas Hydrate Promotion, Inhibition, Rheology, and Mechanical Properties at McGill University: A Review

(1) Background: Gas hydrates are historically notable due to their prevalence and influence on operational difficulties in the oil and gas industry. Recently, new technologies involving the formation of gas hydrates to accomplish various applications have been proposed. This has created new motivation for the characterization of rheological and mechanical properties and the study of molecular phenomena in gas hydrates systems, particularly in the absence of oil and under pre-nucleation conditions. (2) Methodology: This work reviews advances in research on the promotion, inhibition, rheology, and mechanical properties of gas hydrates obtained through an integrated material synthesis-property characterization-multi-scale theoretical and computational platform at McGill University. (3) Discussion: This work highlights the findings from previous experimental work by our group and identifies some of their inherent physical limitations. The role of computational research methods in extending experimental results and observations in the context of mechanical properties of gas hydrates is presented. (4) Summary and Future perspective: Experimental limitations due to the length and time scales of physical phenomena associated with gas hydrates were identified, and future steps implementing the integrated experimental-computational platform to address the limitations presented here were outlined.

Wettability of Phosphonium Benzene Sulfonate on Parafilm

The wettability of phosphonium benzene sulfonate on parafilm has been investigated by means of dynamic contact angle measurement. Based on the surface tension data, the spreading coefficient, adhesion tension (γlg cosθ), and adhesion work (WA) were further analyzed. It was revealed that the surface tension and contact angle decreased with the increase in concentration, and remained constant when the concentration was higher than the critical micelle concentration (CMC). Furthermore, the spreading coefficient increased with increase in concentration then stays unchanged. In the studied concentration range, the value of spreading coefficient is negative, indicating that it cannot rapidly spread the surfactant on the parafilm surface to an uniform film. The measurements show a linear relationship between the adhesion tension γlg cosθ and the surface tension in the concentration range of 2 × 10−6 mol L−1 to 1 × 10−4 mol L−1. The adsorbed amount of surfactant molecules at the parafilm-solution interface is lower than that at the gas-liquid interface. The value of WA was initially decreased then increased as the concentration was increasing and reaches a minimum value at the concentration near the CMC.

Influence of Hydrophilicity on the Thermal-Driven Surfactant Flow at the Air/Water Surface

A series of Triton surfactants with increasing number of ethylene oxide (EO) groups were applied to investigate thermal-driven surface flow. It was found that the thermal gradient is proportional to the number of EO groups on the surface. This correlation leads to the linear correlation between the surfactant structure and the driving force of the surface flow. The friction force, in contrast, follows a monotonic but nonlinear correlation with surfactant's EO groups. The results demonstrate the possibilities to manipulate the surface flow, with potential applications in multiple-phase systems.
