Investigation of structure-surface properties relationship of semi-fluorinated polymerizable cationic surfactants

Self-assembly and antimicrobial activity of cationic gemini surfactants containing triazole moieties

1,2,3-Triazole-based gemini bis-quaternary ammonium surfactants with varying hydrophobic chain length and ethylene or butylene spacers were synthesized and characterized. Their surface and aggregation properties were analyzed using tensiometry and conductimetry. The gemini surfactants showed significantly lower CMC values compared to their single-tail counterparts and conventional gemini surfactants described in the literature. The micellization and surface adsorption processes in water can be tailored according to the hydrophobic chain and the spacer length and were substantially improved by the presence of the heterocycle. These surfactants are active against various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial stains, as well as fungi. The gemini surfactant with tetradecyl chain and ethylene spacer (Bis 14-2-14) exhibited the highest activity against all investigated microbial strains.

Preparation of a Fluorocarbon Polymerizable Surfactant and Its Application in Emulsion Polymerization of Fluorine-Containing Acrylate

A novel polymerizable fluorocarbon surfactant, perfluoro (4–methyl–3, 6–dioxaoct–7–ene) sodium sulfonate (PSVNa), was synthesized and characterized. The fluorocarbon surfactant PSVNa and its mixture PSVNa/SDS were used as emulsifiers during the emulsion polymerization of DFHMA/MMA. The investigation of polymerization kinetics, particle size, and stability of the emulsions revealed that PSVNa has excellent emulsifying properties. The NMR spectrum of the copolymer and the detection of residual PSVNa show that more than 95% of the fluorocarbon surfactants have been linked to the polymer chains by radical polymerization, which will greatly reduce the environmental pollution caused by fluorinated surfactants.

Modified quaternary ammonium salts as potential antimalarial agents

A series of new quaternary ammonium salts containing a polyconjugated moiety has been synthesized and characterized; their biological activity as potential antimalarial agents was investigated, as well. All compounds were screened against chloroquine resistant W-2 (CQ-R) and chloroquine sensitive, D-10 (CQ-S) strains of Plasmodium falciparum showing IC50 in the submicromolar range and low toxicity against human endothelial cells.
