Supramolecular metallogels with complex of phosphonate substituted carbazole derivative and aluminum(III) ion as gelator

Rheological behavior of thread-like fiber solutions formed from a rosin-based surfactant with two head groups

Wormlike micelles are conventional aggregates that exist in viscoelastic solutions. However, to achieve a solution with prominent viscoelasticity, rather high concentrations of surfactants are usually required due to the flexibility of aggregates in solution. If thread-like aggregates with rigidity can be formed by surfactants, the solutions are expected to show strong viscoelasticity at very low surfactant concentrations. Herein, A novel rosin-based quaternary ammonium surfactant with two head groups (abbreviated as R-11-3-DA) was synthesized. Cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (Cryo-TEM) images showed that flexible nanofibers with diameters of about 7-8 nm and lengths of over 1 μm were formed in the 1 : 1.5 R-11-3-DA : SL solutions. The rigidity of the aggregates seems to be inherited from the rigidity of the surfactant molecules. The novel aggregates endow the solutions with remarkable viscoelasticity at very low concentrations, with a critical overlap concentration of 0.01 wt% and a critical gelling concentration of 0.58 wt%. The rheological behavior of the solutions also shows excellent shear resistance and weak sensitivity to temperature below the critical gelation temperature (T_gel). This work reveals the advantages of viscoelastic solutions containing flexible nanofibers. The design principles of new molecular structures and system compositions can be applied to the preparation of smart soft materials based on the self-assembly of molecules.

Thermally induced structural transformations of linear coordination polymers based on aluminum tris(diorganophosphates)

The thermal transitions of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers composed of linear aluminum tris(diorganophosphate) chains with a general formula of catena-Al[O2P(OR)2]3 (where R = C1-C8 alkyl group or phenyl moiety) have been studied by means of DSC, powder XRD, TGA and TG-QMS, as well as optical spectroscopy. DSC and XRD reveal that most of them undergo reversible structural transformations in the solid state between -100 and 200 °C caused by the changes in conformation of their organic substituents; however, a translational displacement of the rigid polymeric chains occurs only in the case of the derivative bearing long 2-ethylhexyl groups, which becomes liquid at about 140 °C. The thermal decomposition of the studied polymers begins between 200 and 265 °C depending on the type of organic substituent R decorating their aluminophospate core. TGA combined with mass spectrometry of the evolved gaseous products shows that the pyrolytic decomposition of Al[O2P(OR)2]3 proceeds either through β-elimination of olefin (for compounds with C2-C8 aliphatic ligands), or a homolytic cleavage of the P-OR bond (for methyl and phenyl derivatives); both processes are accompanied by condensation of the newly formed POH groups and liberation of water. Powder XRD, FTIR and SEM analyses of the solid residues indicate that thermolysis of Al[O2P(OR)2]3 accompanied by olefin elimination leads to the formation of condensed aluminum phosphates, mainly aluminum cyclohexaphosphate, exhibiting porous morphology. On the other hand, thermal degradation of methyl or phenyl derivatives results in amorphous aluminophosphate residues, and the latter contains conducting carbonaceous phases.

Metal-organic gel enhanced fluorescence anisotropy for sensitive detection of prostate specific antigen

In this contribution, we demonstrated that Cu-based metal-organic gel (Cu-MOG) was able to serve as a novel amplification platform for fluorescence anisotropy (FA) assay for the first time, which was confirmed by the sensitive detection of a common cancer biomarker, prostate specific antigen (PSA). The dye-labeled probe aptamer (PA) product was adsorbed onto the benzimidazole derivative-containing Cu-MOG via electrostatic incorporation and strong π-π stacking interactions, which significantly increased the FA value due to the enlargement of the molecular volume of the PA/Cu-MOG complex. With the introduction of target PSA, the FA value was obviously decreased on account of the specific recognition between PSA and PA which resulted in the detachment of PA from the surface of MOG. The linear range was from 0.5-8ng/mL, with a detection limit of 0.33ng/mL. Our work has thus helped to demonstrate promising application of MOG material in the fields of biomolecules analysis and disease diagnosis.

Linear coordination polymers based on aluminum phosphates: synthesis, crystal structure and morphology

Several aluminum tris(diorganophosphates) have been synthesized and characterized via elemental analysis, NMR, FT-IR and Raman spectroscopy, as well as powder XRD, and SEM. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the aluminum tris(diethylphosphate) crystal structure comprises two crystallographically nonequivalent catena-Al[O2P(OEt)2]3 chains propagating along the c-axis. Their parallel orientation favors the formation of closely packed hexagonal domains. PXRD data suggest that other homologues have a similar structure, with the interchain distance closely corresponding to the dimensions of organic ligands. They are also susceptible to a reversible dissociation to ionic species under the effect of primary amines. This feature can be utilized for the synthesis of epoxy nanocomposites.

Supramolecular gels based on boronate esters and imidazolyl donors

Dative boron-nitrogen bonds can be used for the controlled assembly of boronate esters and N-donor ligands. So far, most investigations have focused on crystalline assemblies. In contrast, there are very few reports about soft materials based on dative B-N bonds. Here, we describe the formation of gels by aggregation of diboronate esters and ditopic bisimidazolyl donor ligands. Analyses of low molecular weight model compounds by NMR spectroscopy, isothermal titration calorimetry, and X-ray crystallography reveal that imidazolyl ligands form particularly strong dative bonds with boronate esters. The strong interaction allows gel formation in competitive polar solvents such as THF and acetone. In less polar solvents, very low critical gel concentrations of down to 0.02 wt% are observed. By using a diboronate ester linked by an azobenzene group, it is possible to form a photoresponsive gel.
