Multifunctional Fe₃O₄@nSiO₂@mSiO₂-Fe core-shell microspheres for highly efficient removal of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl)ethane (DDT) from aqueous media

Fe3O4@C@MCM41-guanidine core-shell nanostructures as a powerful and recyclable nanocatalyst with high performance for synthesis of Knoevenagel reaction

In this study, preparation, characterization and catalytic application of a novel core-shell structured magnetic with carbon and mesoporous silica shells supported guanidine (Fe₃O₄@C@MCM41-guanidine) are developed. The Fe₃O₄@C@MCM41-guanidine was prepared via surfactant directed hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate around Fe₃O₄@C NPs followed by treatment with guanidinium chloride. This nanocomposite was characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis, wide-angle X-ray diffraction and low-angle X-ray diffraction techniques. This nanocomposite have high thermal, chemical stability, and uniform size. Fe₃O₄@C@MCM41-guanidine catalyst demonstrated high yield (91-98%) to prepare of Knoevenagel derivatives under the solvent free conditions at room temperature in the shortest time. Also, this catalyst was recovered and reused 10 times without significant decrease in efficiency and stability. Fortunately, an excellent level of yield (98-82%) was observed in the 10 consecutive catalyst cycles.

Hierarchical magnetic nanoparticles for highly effective capture of small extracellular vesicles

Small extracellular vesicles (EVs) have various functions through the transfer of specific biomolecules. However, it is still challenging to capture small EVs with high sensitivity and specificity. Herein, inspired by the unique burry structure and the strong adhesion ability of pollen grains, we presented a novel Fe₃O₄@MgSiO₃ hierarchical magnetic nanoparticles (HNPs) as nanocarriers for the capture of small EVs. The NPs were generated through the solvothermal method and further modified with branching dendrimers to exhibit a hierarchical morphology. The enlarged surface area facilitated high-efficient capture of small EVs through specific recognition of aptamer probes and the small EVs surface markers. Besides, the magnetic core of the NPs allowed them to be isolated under the action of an external magnetic field, and thus the captured small EVs could be easily separated from plasma. These results indicated that the HNPs could serve as excellent nanocarriers for small EVs capture and related biomedical applications.

A green approach to DDT degradation and metabolite monitoring in water comparing the hydrodechlorination efficiency of Pd, Au-on-Pd and Cu-on-Pd nanoparticle catalysis

DDT (1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bi(p-chlorophenyl)-ethane) and its metabolites (DDD, 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis-(4'-chlorophenyl)ethane, and DDE, 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis-(4'-chlorophenyl)ethylene) are persistent organic pollutants that can be catalytically degraded into a less toxic and less persistent compound. In this work, ecofriendly methodologies for catalyst synthesis, catalytic degradation of DDT and reaction monitoring have been proposed. Three types of Pd-based nanoparticles, NPs, (Pd, Au-on-Pd and Cu-on-Pd) were synthesized and used for catalytic hydrodechlorination of DDT and its metabolites. The structural and electronic properties of NPs were investigated using TEM and XAS spectroscopy. Au-on-Pd showed the highest hydrodechlorination efficiency within 1 h of reaction. To obtain the best reaction conditions, the effects of H₂ flow and base addition Au-on-Pd NPs activity were investigated. To study the effectiveness of the different NPs, a solvent-free analytical method was optimized to detect and measure DDT and its by-products. The SPME-GC-MS method provided low detection limits (0.03 μg L^-1) and high recovery (≥88.75%) and was a valuable tool for the NP degradation study. In this way, a green method for degradation and monitoring of DDT and its by-products in water was achieved.

Efficient transformation of DDT with peroxymonosulfate activation by different crystallographic MnO2

In this study, three different structures of MnO₂ were synthesized and used to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of DDT in aqueous solutions. It was found that DDT was efficiently degraded in the MnO₂/PMS system and the degradation rate was dependent on the properties of MnO₂ including crystal structure (followed the order: α-MnO₂ > γ-MnO₂ > β-MnO₂), surface area and Mn(III) content. Sulfate radicals (SO₄^-) was primarily responsible for the degradation of DDT based on the results of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching experiments. The degradation of DDT was suppressed at alkaline pH because the formation of SO₄^- was inhibited. The results of GC-MS indicated that dichlorobenzophenone, 4-chlorobenzoic acid and benzylalcohol were the dominant intermediates for DDT degradation. The possible pathways of DDT degradation were proposed according to the identified products.

Preparation of magnetic mesoporous silica from rice husk for aflatoxin B1 removal: Optimum process and adsorption mechanism

The liquid foodstuffs such as edible oil products remain a problem of excessive aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) content. This paper focused on the preparation of magnetic mesoporous silica (MMS) from rice husk ash for the removal of AFB1 in oil system. The MMS preparation process, adsorption conditions, structural characteristics, and adsorption mechanism were investigated. The optimum conditions for MMS preparation were pH 11.0 and 80°C for 24 h. The characterization results showed that magnetic particles were successfully embedded in the MMS and had high responsiveness to a magnetic field, which was advantageous for recyclability. The MMS had ordered uniform channels with a specific surface area of 730.98 m2/g and pore diameter of 2.43 nm. The optimum adsorption conditions were 2 h at 20°C. For AFB1 with an initial concentration of 0.2 μg/mL, the MMS adsorption capacity was 171.98 μg/g and the adsorption rate was 94.59%. The MMS adsorption isotherm fitted the Langmuir model well under the assumption of monolayer AFB1 adsorption with uniformly distributed adsorption sites on the MMS surface. The maximum amount of AFB1 adsorbed according to the Langmuir isotherm was 1118.69 μg/g. A quasi-second-order kinetic model gave a better fit to the process of AFB1 adsorption on MMS. The values of ΔH (-19.17 kJ/mol) and ΔG (-34.09, -34.61, and -35.15 kJ/mol at 283, 293, and 303 K, respectively) were negative, indicating that AFB1 adsorption on MMS was a spontaneous exothermic process. The results indicated that MMS was a promising material for AFB1 removal in oil system, and this study will serve as a guide for practical MMS applications.

Magnetic mesoporous nanoparticles modified with poly(ionic liquids) with multi-functional groups for enrichment and determination of pyrethroid residues in apples

Considering that the determination of pyrethroid residues is of value for the safety of food, a new poly(ionic liquid)-functionalized magnetic mesoporous nanoparticle was designed and used as an adsorbent in magnetic solid-phase extraction for the enrichment of eight pyrethroids. The porous structure and large surface area of the mesoporous silica shell endow the adsorbent with abundant binding sites. In contrast to the reported poly(ionic liquids) with only one kind of functional group in the cationic part, the new poly(ionic liquids) with mixed cyano and phenyl groups in cationic part matched the chemical structure of the analytes to improve extraction efficiency. Under the optimum conditions, an effective method was established for the determination of eight pyrethroids in apples. Adsorption equilibrium can be quickly reached in 1 min, greatly decreasing the extraction time. The linearity range was found to be 10-200 ng/g, and the detection limits ranged from 0.24 to 1.99 ng/g. Recoveries of analytes in apple samples ranged from 87.3 to 119.0%, with relative standard deviations varying in the range of 3-21.2% (intraday) and 0.3-15.2% (interday). The results indicate that the proposed method is a good candidate for pyrethroid residues in apple samples.

Modeling photocatalytic degradation of diazinon from aqueous solutions and effluent toxicity risk assessment using Escherichia coli LMG 15862

In this study, modeling and degradation of diazinon from contaminated water by advanced oxidation process together with a new test for effluent bioassay using E. coli were investigated. The experiments were designed based on response surface methodology. Nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using the sol–gel method. The shape characteristics and specifications of elements in the nanoparticles were characterized using scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray, respectively. Diazinon was measured using high performance liquid chromatography device and by-products due to its decomposition were identified by gas chromatography-mass (GC–MS). In the present study, effluent bioassay tests were conducted by defining the rate of dehydrogenase enzyme reducing alamar blue method. According to statistical analyses (R² = 0.986), the optimized values for pH, dose of NPs, and contact time were found to be 6.75, 775 mg/L, and 65 min, respectively. At these conditions, 96.06% of the diazinon was removed. Four main by-products, diazoxon, 7-methyl-3-octyne, 2-isopropyl-6-methyl-4pyrimidinol and diethyl phosphonate were detected. According to the alamar blue reducing (ABR) test, 50% effective concentration, no observed effect concentration, and 100% effective concentration (EC₁₀₀) for the mortality rate of E. coli were obtained as 2.275, 0.839, and 4.430 mg/L, respectively. Based on the results obtained, it was found that mentioned process was high efficiency in removing diazinon, and also a significant relationship between toxicity assessment tests were obtained (P < 0.05).

Fabrication of magnetic Fe3O4@nSiO2@mSiO2-NH2 core-shell mesoporous nanocomposite and its application for highly efficient ultrasound assisted dispersive µSPE-spectrofluorimetric detection of ofloxacin in urine and plasma samples

In this research, a sensitive, simple and rapid ultrasound assisted dispersive micro solid-phase extraction (USAD-µSPE) was developed using a synthesized core-shell magnetic mesoporous nanocomposite (Fe₃O₄@nSiO₂@mSiO₂-NH₂) as an efficient adsorbent for the preconcentration and spectrofluorometric determination of ofloxacin (OFL) in biological samples. The synthesized adsorbent was characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis. The application of this magnetic nanocomposite as a sensitive solid phase for removal, preconcentration and spectrofluorometric quantification of trace amount of OFL was developed. Influence of various variables including pH, sorbent dosage, desorption solvent properties and sonication time on present method response was studied and optimized. The results showed that using the proposed method OFL can be determined in the linear concentration range of 1.0-500.0µgL^-1 with a limit of detection as low as 0.21µgL^-1 and relative standard deviation less than 2.5 (%). The results of human urine and blood plasma analysis showed that the method is a good candidate for biological sample analysis purposes.

Optimization of photochemical decomposition acetamiprid pesticide from aqueous solutions and effluent toxicity assessment by Pseudomonas aeruginosa BCRC using response surface methodology

Contamination of water resources by acetamiprid pesticide is considered one of the main environmental problems. The aim of this study was the optimization of acetamiprid removal from aqueous solutions by TiO₂/Fe₃O₄/SiO₂ nanocomposite using the response surface methodology (RSM) with toxicity assessment by Pseudomonas aeruginosa BCRC. To obtain the optimum condition for acetamiprid degradation using RSM and central composite design (CCD). The magnetic TiO₂/Fe₃O₄/SiO₂ nanocomposite was synthesized using co-precipitation and sol–gel methods. The surface morphology of the nanocomposite and magnetic properties of the as-synthesized Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were characterised by scanning electron microscope and vibrating sample magnetometer, respectively. In this study, toxicity assessment tests have been carried out by determining the activity of dehydrogenase enzyme reducing Resazurin (RR) and colony forming unit (CFU) methods. According to CCD, quadratic optimal model with R² = 0.99 was used. By analysis of variance, the most effective values of each factor were determined in each experiment. According to the results, the most optimal conditions for removal efficiency of acetamiprid (pH = 7.5, contact time = 65 min, and dose of nanoparticle 550 mg/L) was obtained at 76.55%. Effect concentration (EC₅₀) for RR and CFU test were 1.950 and 2.050 mg/L, respectively. Based on the results obtained from the model, predicted response values showed high congruence with actual response values. And, the model was suitable for the experiment’s design conditions.

Environmental implications and applications of engineered nanoscale magnetite and its hybrid nanocomposites: A review of recent literature

This review focuses on environmental implications and applications of engineered magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (MNPs) as a single phase or a component of a hybrid nanocomposite that exhibits superparamagnetism and high surface area. MNPs are synthesized via co-precipitation, thermal decomposition and combustion, hydrothermal process, emulsion, microbial process, and green approaches. Aggregation/sedimentation and transport of MNPs depend on surface charge of MNPs and geochemical parameters such as pH, ionic strength, and organic matter. MNPs generally have low toxicity to humans and ecosystem. MNPs are used for constructing chemical/biosensors and for catalyzing a variety of chemical reactions. MNPs are used for air cleanup and carbon sequestration. MNP nanocomposites are designed as antimicrobial agents for water disinfection and flocculants for water treatment. Conjugated MNPs are widely used for adsorptive/separative removal of organics, dyes, oil, arsenic, phosphate, molybdate, fluoride, selenium, Cr(VI), heavy metal cations, radionuclides, and rare earth elements. MNPs can degrade organic/inorganic contaminants via chemical reduction or catalyze chemical oxidation in water, sediment, and soil. Future studies should further explore mechanisms of MNP interactions with other nanomaterials and contaminants, economic and green approaches of MNP synthesis, and field scale demonstration of MNP utilization.

Efficient transformation of DDT by peroxymonosulfate activated with cobalt in aqueous systems: Kinetics, products, and reactive species identification

Recently, sulfate radical ( [Formula: see text] ) based-advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) have been attracted great attention in the remediation of contaminated soil and groundwater. In the present study, Co(2+) ions activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) system was used to degrade 1, 1, 1-trichloro-2, 2'bis(p-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT) in aqueous solutions. It was found that DDT was efficiently degraded in the PMS/Co(II) solutions within several hours, and the degradation efficiency of DDT was dependent on the concentrations of PMS and Co(II), and the optimum molar ratio of PMS and Co(II) was 50:1. The degradation kinetics of DDT were well described with pseudo-first-order equations over a range of temperature (10-40 °C), and the activation energy that was calculated with Arrhenius equation was 72.3 ± 2.6 kJ/mol. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and GC-MS techniques were applied to identify the intermediates and reactive species for DDT degradation. The results indicated that [Formula: see text] and OH were the main reactive species accounting for DDT degradation. Dichlorobenzophenone, 4-chlorobenzoic acid and benzylalcohol were the dominant intermediates for DDT degradation, and the likely degradation pathway of DDT was proposed on the basis of these identified products. Increasing pH inhibited the formation of [Formula: see text] and OH, and thus decreased the catalytic degradation of DDT. Cl(-) ion was found to significantly inhibit, while [Formula: see text] and dissolved oxygen had limited effects on DDT degradation.

Pd-loaded magnetic mesoporous nanocomposites: A magnetically recoverable catalyst with effective enrichment and high activity for DDT and DDE removal under mild conditions

1,1,1-Trichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethane (DDT), an organochlorine pollutant, is highly persistent in environment and responsible for many ecological and health damages. Although remediation and degradation of DDT and its metabolites in soil and water by microorganisms and abiotic techniques can be accomplished, success is often accompanied by rigorous reaction conditions, such as anaerobic system, explosive gases, high pressure or temperature, and illumination. Here a triple-functional nanocomposite was prepared by integrating superparamagnetic Fe3O4 and palladium (Pd) nanoparticles onto mesoporous Fe3O4@nSiO2@mSiO2 nanospheres. These magnetic mesoporous materials display excellent capabilities of capturing and catalytically degrading DDT in water. Over these nanocomposites, DDT and its metabolite, 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(4-chlorophenyl) ethylene (DDE) could be quickly enriched and completely degraded at as low as 150 °C. The nanocomposites can be magnetically separated from the dispersion after adsorption, and then be easily regenerated which is accompanied by catalytic reaction. The whole treatment process is convenient, energy-saving, and just requires ambient pressure and mild reaction conditions.
