On the supramacromolecular structure of core–shell amphiphilic macromolecules derived from hyperbranched polyethyleneimine

Molecularly imprinted self-buffering double network hydrogel containing bi-amidoxime functional groups for the rapid hydrolysis of organophosphates

The development of high-performance catalyst materials with high catalytic activity for the hydrolysis of organophosphorus toxicants without additional pH buffer conditions has become an urgent need for practical application. Here, a multifunctional molecularly imprinted polymer double network hydrogel (MIP-DN) material has been prepared by integrating the first polymer network containing the functional group of bi-amidoxime as the catalytic active center and the cationic polymer polyethyleneimine (PEI) with pH buffer function as the main component of the second network. Advantageously, the resultant MIP-DN hydrogel showed excellent catalytic performance without additional pH buffer conditions, exhibiting a half-life of 25 min for the hydrolysis of paraoxon in pure water. Together with multi-functions of high catalytic activity, self-buffering function and excellent processability, the MIP-DN hydrogel prepared in this work provides a new strategy for the preparation of catalytic materials with practical application value toward toxic organophosphates.

Au(i)-, Ag(i)-, and Pd(ii)-coordination-driven diverse self-assembly of an N-heterocyclic carbene-based amphiphile

Au(i)-, Ag(i)-, and Pd(ii)-coordination-driven diverse self-assembly of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-based amphiphile was demonstrated herein. The transition metals had significant effects over the whole system, setting the self-assembly direction of the NHC-based amphiphile. More specifically, Au(i)- and Ag(i)-coordination to the NHC-based amphiphile promoted the formation of spherical and hexagonal structures, while Pd(ii)-coordination promoted the formation of cylindrical and lamellar structures.

Mesostructured Electroactive Thin Films Through Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Redox Surfactants and Polyelectrolytes

Electroactive thin films are an important element in the devices devoted to energy conversion, actuators, and molecular electronics, among others. Their build-up by the layer-by-layer technique is an attractive choice since a fine control over the thickness and composition can be achieved. However, most of the assemblies described in the literature show a lack of internal order, and their thicknesses change upon oxidation-state alterations. In this work, we describe the formation of layer-by-layer assemblies of redox surfactants and polyelectrolytes that leads to the construction of mesoscale organized electroactive films. In contrast to thin films prepared with traditional redox polymers, here, the redox surfactant does not only allow the control of the film meso-organization (from 2D hexagonal to circular hexagonal phases) but it also allows the control of the number and position of the redox centers. Finally, these films show high stability and a negligible structural deformation under redox-state changes.

Self-assembly and molecular packing in cholesteryl esters at interfaces

To understand the self-assembly and molecular packing in cholesteryl esters relevant to biological processes, we have studied them at the air-water and air-solid interfaces. Our phase and thickness studies employing imaging ellipsometry and atomic force microscopy along with surface manometry show that the molecular packing of cholesteryl esters at interfaces can be related to Craven's model of packing, given for bulk. At the air-water interface, following Craven's model, cholesteryl nonanoate and cholesteryl laurate exhibit a fluidic bilayer phase. Interestingly, we find the fluidic bilayer phase of cholesteryl laurate to be unstable and it switches to a crystalline bilayer phase. However, according to Craven, only cholesteryl esters with longer chain lengths starting from cholesteryl tridecanoate should show the crystalline bilayer phase. The thickness behavior of different phases was also studied by transferring the films onto a silicon substrate by using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Texture studies show that cholesterol, cholesteryl acetate, cholesteryl nonanoate, cholesteryl laurate, and cholesteryl myristate exhibit homogeneous films with large size domains, whereas cholesteryl palmitate and cholesteryl stearate exhibit less homogeneous films with smaller size domains. We suggest that such an assembly of molecules can be related to their molecular structures. Simulation studies may confirm such a relation.

Formation and characterization of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of Newkome-type dendrons in presence and absence of a therapeutic compound, for the development of surface mediated drug delivery systems

Organic macromolecules with dendrimeric architectures are polymeric materials potentially useful as nanocarriers for therapeutic drugs. In this work, we evaluate a series of Newkome-type dendrons in Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films as platforms capable of interacting with a potential antitumoral agent. The nanocomposite is proposed as model for the development of surface mediated drug delivery systems. We were successful in the formation and characterization of pure (dendrons) and composite (drug-dendron) stable and reproducible monolayers, and their transfer to solid substrates. A detailed study of topographic characteristics of the generated surfaces by atomic force microscopy was conducted. Furthermore, we probed dendron monolayer films as anchorage surfaces for mammalian cells. Normal cell attachment and proliferation on the surfaces were observed. No evident cytotoxic effects were detected, demonstrating the adequate biocompatibility of the surfaces.
