Selective hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene over anatase-ferric oxides supported Ir nanocomposite catalyst

Lattice Oxygen Lability of La-Hexaaluminates Substituted by Different Metals and Their Effects on the Thermal Stability of Supported Nano-Ir Particles

Oxide supports with high lattice oxygen lability can stabilize the supported nanoparticles at high temperatures. The lattice oxygen lability of lanthanum hexaaluminates (LHAs) substituted with other metals (such as Mg and Fe) as well as their effects on the thermal stability of supported Ir particles were investigated via CO chemisorption, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction (H₂-TPR), oxygen temperature-programmed desorption (O₂-TPD), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), and scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) techniques. The H₂-TPR results showed that the lattice oxygen lability of lanthanum iron hexaaluminate (LFA) was much higher than that of lanthanum magnesium hexaaluminate (LMA). This variation could be attributed to the difference in the reducibility of Fe/Mg atoms and their substitution sites in the crystallographic lattice. Under the reductive condition, the H₂-TPR presented that the amount of reducible lattice oxygen of LFA supported by metallic Ir decreased significantly, implying the existence of the migration of lattice oxygen and formation of oxygen vacancies, as revealed by O₂-TPD and XPS results. After thermal aging at 1200 °C, the amount of residual Ir in LFA was about 4 times that of LMA, as shown in the ICP results. The mean size and dispersion of Ir particles in LFA were better than those in LMA, as revealed by the SEM/TEM results, showing the superior thermal stability of the Ir particles in LFA support. Hence, this study concludes that the lattice oxygen lability plays an important role in improving the thermal stability of the Ir@LHAs at high temperatures. Based on characterization results, a model was proposed to explain the interaction between Ir and LHAs and its effect on the thermal stability of the Ir particles.

UV Light-Assisted Synthesis of Highly Efficient Pd-Based Catalyst over NiO for Hydrogenation of o-Chloronitrobenzene

Supported Pd-based catalyst over active nickel oxide (NiO) was repared using the impregnation method companying with UV-light irradiation. Moreover, the catalytic performance of the obtained Pd-based catalysts was evaluated towards the hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzene (o-CNB). Observations indicate that the as-prepared UV-irradiated Pd/NiO catalyst with a mole fraction 0.2% (0.2%Pd/NiO) has higher activity and selectivity in the o-CNB hydrogenation. Especially, UV-light irradiation played a positive role in the improvement of catalytic activity of 0.2%Pd/NiO catalyst, exhibiting an excess 11-fold activity superiority in contrast with non-UV-irradiated 0.2%Pd/NiO catalyst. In addition, it was investigated that effects of varied factors (i.e., reaction time, temperature, o-CNB/Pd ratio, Pd loading, hydrogen pressure) on the selective hydrogenation of ο-CNB catalyzed by UV-irradiated 0.2%Pd/NiO catalyst. Under the reaction conditions of 60 °C, 0.5 h, 1 MPa H₂ pressure, 100% conversion of o-CNB, and 81.1% o-CAN selectivity were obtained, even at high molar ratio (8000:1) of o-CNB to Pd.

A Novel Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles Supported on Hybrid Polymer/Metal Oxide as Catalysts for p-Chloronitrobenzene Hydrogenation

This contribution reports a novel preparation of gold nanoparticles on polymer/metal oxide hybrid materials (Au/P[VBTACl]-M metal: Al, Ti or Zr) and their use as heterogeneous catalysts in liquid phase hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene. The support was prepared by in situ radical polymerization/sol gel process of (4-vinyl-benzyl)trimethylammonium chloride and 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate in conjunction with metal-alkoxides as metal oxide precursors. The supported catalyst was prepared by an ion exchange process using chloroauric acid (HAuCl4) as gold precursor. The support provided the appropriate environment to induce the spontaneous reduction and deposition of gold nanoparticles. The hybrid material was characterized. TEM and DRUV-vis results indicated that the gold forms spherical metallic nanoparticles and that their mean diameter increases in the sequence, Au/P[VBTACl]-Zr > Au/P[VBTACl]-Al > Au/P[VBTACl]-Ti. The reactivity of the Au catalysts toward the p-CNB hydrogenation reaction is attributed to the different particle size distributions of gold nanoparticles in the hybrid supports. The kinetic pseudo-first-order constant values for the catalysts in the hydrogenation reaction increases in the order, Au/P[VBTACl]-Al > Au/P[VBTACl]-Zr > Au/P[VBTACl]-Ti. The selectivity for all the catalytic systems was greater than 99% toward the chloroaniline target product. Finally the catalyst supported on the hybrid with Al as metal oxide could be reused at least four times without loss in activity or selectivity for the hydrogenation of p-CNB in ethanol as solvent.
