Silver Nanocubes: From Serendipity to Mechanistic Understanding, Rational Synthesis, and Niche Applications

Silver has long been interwoven into human history, and its uses have evolved from currency and jewelry to medicine, information technology, catalysis, and electronics. Within the last century, the development of nanomaterials has further solidified the importance of this element. Despite this long history, there was essentially no mechanistic understanding or experimental control of silver nanocrystal synthesis until about two decades ago. Here we aim to provide an account of the history and development of the colloidal synthesis of silver nanocubes, as well as some of their major applications. We begin with a description of the first accidental synthesis of silver nanocubes that spurred subsequent investigations into each of the individual components of the protocol, revealing piece by piece parts of the mechanistic puzzle. This is followed by a discussion of the various obstacles inherent to the original method alongside mechanistic details developed to optimize the synthetic protocol. Finally, we discuss a range of applications enabled by the plasmonic and catalytic properties of silver nanocubes, including localized surface plasmon resonance, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, metamaterials, and ethylene epoxidation, as well as further derivatization and development of size, shape, composition, and related properties.

Advances and challenges in metallic nanomaterial synthesis and antibacterial applications

Multi-drug resistant bacterial infection has become one of the most serious threats to global public health. The preparation and application of new antibacterial materials are of great significance for solving the infection problem of bacteria, especially multi-drug resistant bacteria. The exceptional antibacterial effects of metal nanoparticles based on their unique physical and chemical properties make such systems ideal for application as antibacterial drug carriers or self-modified therapeutic agents both in vitro and in vivo. Metal nanoparticles also have admirable clinical application prospects due to their broad antibacterial spectrum, various antibacterial mechanisms and excellent biocompatibility. Nevertheless, the in vivo structural stability, long-term safety and cytotoxicity of the surface modification of metal nanoparticles have yet to be further explored and improved in subsequent studies. Herein, we summarized the research progress concerning the mechanism of metal nanomaterials in terms of antibacterial activity together with the preparation of metal nanostructures. Based on these observations, we also give a brief discussion on the current problems and future developments of metal nanoparticles for antibacterial applications.

Refractive index and formaldehyde sensing with silver nanocubes

We report the synthesis of Ag nanocubes by using a sodium sulfide assisted solvothermal method. Small edge-length nanocubes (32 and 44 nm) were obtained at 145 and 155 °C reaction temperature in the synthesis process. The refractive index sensitivity of synthesized nanocubes was investigated with an aqueous solution of glucose. The refractive index sensitivity of 161 nm per RIU was found in the colloidal dispersion of nanocubes. On the LSPR chip made by immobilization of nanocubes on the (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane modified glass coverslip, the obtained sensitivity was 116 nm per RIU. Detection of formaldehyde in water and milk samples was also performed with nanocubes of edge-length of 44 nm. Formaldehyde detection was performed by utilizing the interaction of the aryl amine of 4-aminothiophenol immobilized on the nanocubes and electrophilic carbon atom of the formaldehyde. In water and in diluted milk, the formaldehyde sensitivity of 0.62 and 0.29 nm μM⁻¹ was obtained, respectively.

Investigation of Polyol Process for the Synthesis of Highly Pure BiFeO3 Ovoid-Like Shape Nanostructured Powders

Exclusive and unprecedented interest was accorded in this paper to the synthesis of BiFeO₃ nanopowders by the polyol process. The synthesis protocol was explored and adjusted to control the purity and the grain size of the final product. The optimum parameters were carefully established and an average crystallite size of about 40 nm was obtained. XRD and Mössbauer measurements proved the high purity of the synthesized nanostructurated powders and confirmed the persistence of the rhombohedral R3c symmetry. The first studies on the magnetic properties show a noticeable widening of the hysteresis loop despite the remaining cycloidal magnetic structure, promoting the enhancement of the ferromagnetic order and consequently the magnetoelectric coupling compared to micrometric size powders.

Uniform Ag Nanocubes Prepared by AgCl Particle-Mediated Heterogeneous Nucleation and Disassembly and Their Mechanism Study by DFT Calculation

Uniform Ag nanocubes are reproducibly synthesized by a AgCl particle-mediated heterogeneous nucleation and disassembly process in polyol chemistry. By introducing N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) in a conventional polyol method with HCl etchant, Ag nanocrystals (NCs) begin to be nucleated on the surface of AgCl-precipitated particles due to the promoted reduction reaction by DMF. The nucleated Ag NCs on the AgCl particles are grown to Ag nanocubes in shape by consuming Ag sources from the AgCl mother particles. Eventually the grown Ag nanocubes are disassembled from the mother AgCl particles because the AgCl particles are fully digested by the growing Ag nanocubes. Density functional theory calculation confirms that the Ag atoms can be favorably deposited on the (100) facet of AgCl particles and the Ag nuclei on the AgCl particles tend to reveal (100) facet.

Strategies to synthesize various nanostructures of silver and their applications - a review

Due to their various beneficial application-based properties, such as behavior, structure, and size, the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) with different structures has become an interesting yet common task for researchers to produce nanostructures for applications in various fields. This is because silver nanoparticles have interesting and unique properties, such as optical and catalytic, resulting from their different structures and sizes. These properties extend the use of nanostructures in various fields of research, especially in medicine, pharmacy, electronics, etc. Also, variations in their parameters affect the structures and sizes of Ag-NPs. This review provides an overview/brief presentation of various methodologies used to synthesize different application-based silver nanoparticles and lists areas where these nanoparticles are suitable for use according to their specific structures and sizes.

How Structure-Directing Agents Control Nanocrystal Shape: Polyvinylpyrrolidone-Mediated Growth of Ag Nanocubes

The importance of structure-directing agents (SDAs) in the shape-selective synthesis of colloidal nanostructures has been well documented. However, the mechanisms by which SDAs actuate shape control are poorly understood. In the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-mediated growth of {100}-faceted Ag nanocrystals, this capability has been attributed to preferential binding of PVP to Ag(100). We use molecular dynamics simulations to probe the mechanisms by which Ag atoms add to Ag(100) and Ag(111) in ethylene glycol solution with PVP. We find that PVP induces kinetic Ag nanocrystal shapes by regulating the relative Ag fluxes to these facets. Stronger PVP binding to Ag(100) leads to a larger Ag flux to Ag(111) and cubic nanostructures through two mechanisms: enhanced Ag trapping by more extended PVP films on Ag(111) and a reduced free-energy barrier for Ag to cross lower-density films on Ag(111). These flux-regulating capabilities depend on PVP concentration and chain length, consistent with experiment.
