Probing structure in submicronic aqueous assemblies of emulsified microemulsions and charged spherical colloids using SANS and cryo-TEM

Topical Microemulsions: Skin Irritation Potential and Anti-Inflammatory Effects of Herbal Substances

Microemulsions (MEs) have gained prominence as effective drug delivery systems owing to their optical transparency, low viscosity, and thermodynamic stability. MEs, when stabilized with surfactants and/or co-surfactants, exhibit enhanced drug solubilization, prolonged shelf life, and simple preparation methods. This review examines the various types of MEs, explores different preparation techniques, and investigates characterization approaches. Plant extracts and bioactive compounds are well established for their utilization as active ingredients in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Being derived from natural sources, they serve as preferable alternatives to synthetic chemicals. Furthermore, they have demonstrated a wide range of therapeutic effects, including anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antioxidant activities. However, the topical application of plant extracts and bioactive compounds has certain limitations, such as low skin absorption and stability. To overcome these challenges, the utilization of MEs enables enhanced skin absorption, thereby making them a valuable mode of administration. However, considering the significant surfactant content in MEs, this review evaluates the potential skin irritation caused by MEs containing herbal substances. Additionally, the review explores the topical application of MEs specifically for herbal substances, with an emphasis on their anti-inflammatory properties.

Combined Small-Angle Neutron Scattering/Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Analysis for the Characterization of Silver Nanoparticles Prepared via Photoreduction in Water-in-Oil Microemulsions

In this study, we used small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) to investigate the formation process of silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) in water-in-oil (w/o) reverse microemulsions comprising sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT), water, and organic solvents (such as benzene, octane, and decane) by the photoreduction of silver perchlorate (AgClO₄). Combining SANS and SAXS, the structural changes in the w/o microemulsions before and after the formation of Ag NPs via photoreduction were quantitatively evaluated. From the SANS experiments performed using the contrast-variation method, the size of water cores containing Ag NPs and the thickness of the AOT shells were calculated using the core-shell hard-sphere model. The size of the Ag NPs and their aggregates was calculated via SAXS analysis based on the polydisperse sphere model with a Schulz-Zimm distribution. We found that aggregates of three or four primary Ag NPs are formed by, first, the aggregation of water droplets through the entanglement of the tails of the AOT shell, followed by the self-assembly of Ag NPs into their aggregates because of particle-particle attractive interactions.

A closer look at the behaviour of milk lipids during digestion

Milk has recently been reported to form complex self-assembled liquid crystalline structures during digestion by lipolytic enzymes. The formation of cubic phases at the endpoint of digestion was of particular interest as this requires a fine balance in self-assembly. This manuscript probes the robustness of the kinetic structural behaviour when milk is subjected to a range of processes that are encountered by milk and/or are relevant to the use of milk in pharmaceutical applications (homogenisation, lyophilisation, freeze-thawing and freeze-drying) using time-resolved small angle X-ray scattering (TR-SAXS). The nature of the persistent lamellar phase that occurs during digestion is elucidated using SAXS and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the interplay between the formation of structured mesophases and the evolution of particle size during digestion is determined using laser light scattering studies. This closer look at milk lipids during digestion establishes the dependence of the structural behaviour of milk on lipid composition and not processing, and clarifies the phase behaviour and kinetic effects on particle size distribution under lipolytic conditions.

Probing foam with neutrons

Foams are multiscale materials that have an enormous number of uses. As the relevant structural length-scales span from a few nanometres up to millimetres a number of characterisation methods need to be combined to obtain the full material structure. In this review we explain how foams can be explored using Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS). We remind the reader of the basics of SANS and contrast variation before we describe the different types of experiments that have been carried out on foams emphasising the specific role of neutrons in learning about the systems. To date SANS has been used to measure different foam structural parameters, such as the film thickness and the bubble size. Several studies have also been carried out to elucidate the organisation of the stabilising objects in the bulk solution. Finally we show how SANS measurements can be used to measure foam composition. Some of the accessible information is unique to SANS experiments, but as the method is still not very widely used on foams the review is also aimed to act as an introduction on how to carry out such measurements on foams.

Chiral Nanoparticle as a New Efficient Antimicrobial Nanoagent

d-type functionalized nanoparticles (NPs) can bind to MurD ligase with high affinity and inhibit its peptidoglycan synthetic enzyme activity, and finally cause bacterial killing. In contrast, its L-type counterpart displays a negligible effect, indicating that the chiral structure of the functionalized NPs plays an essential role in their binding interaction with MurD and therefore the antibacterial activity.
