Structure–interfacial properties relationship and quantification of the amphiphilicity of well-defined ionic and non-ionic surfactants using the PIT-slope method

Colloid, interface, and foam properties of water-soluble polyglycerol esters solutions

HYPOTHESIS

Polyglycerol esters of fatty acids are generated via the esterification of a polydisperse mixture of polyglycerol with naturally derived fatty acids. The polymerization process of polyglycerol results in the production of various oligomers, ranging from di-, tri-, and higher-order forms, which contribute to the complexity of final products. The combination of complementary experimental techniques and adequate theoretical interpretations can reveal the wide variety of their physicochemical properties.

EXPERIMENTS

The colloid and interface properties of polyglyceryl mono-laurate, mono-stearate, mono-oleate, and a mixture of mono-caprylate and mono-caprate esters solutions were characterized by measurements of the electrolytic conductivity, static and dynamic surface tension, aggregate and micelle sizes and distributions, thin liquid film stability and stratification, and solubility in aqueous and in oil phases. The formation, stability, and bubble size distribution of foams generated from polyglycerol esters aqueous solutions were systematically investigated.

FINDINGS

The low concentrations of double-tail molecules and fatty acids in polyglycerol esters affect considerably their micellar, aggregation, and vesicle formations in aqueous solutions. The theoretical data interpretation of polyglycerol esters isotherms and thin liquid films data provide information on the adsorption energies, excluded areas per molecule, interaction parameters of molecules at interfaces, surface electrostatic potential, and the size of micelles. Polyglyceryl mono-oleate exhibits spontaneous emulsification properties. Short chain length polyglycerol esters have excellent foaming ability but relatively low foam stability. The optimal weight fractions of the short-chain polyglyceryl esters and polyglyceryl mono-stearate mixtures with respect to good foaminess and foam stability upon Ostwald ripening are obtained. The reported physicochemical characterization of the water-soluble polyglycerol esters could be of interest to increase the range of their applicability in practice.

Modeling interfacial tension of surfactant-hydrocarbon systems using robust tree-based machine learning algorithms

Interfacial tension (IFT) between surfactants and hydrocarbon is one of the important parameters in petroleum engineering to have a successful enhanced oil recovery (EOR) operation. Measuring IFT in the laboratory is time-consuming and costly. Since, the accurate estimation of IFT is of paramount significance, modeling with advanced intelligent techniques has been used as a proper alternative in recent years. In this study, the IFT values between surfactants and hydrocarbon were predicted using tree-based machine learning algorithms. Decision tree (DT), extra trees (ET), and gradient boosted regression trees (GBRT) were used to predict this parameter. For this purpose, 390 experimental data collected from previous studies were used to implement intelligent models. Temperature, normal alkane molecular weight, surfactant concentration, hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB), and phase inversion temperature (PIT) were selected as inputs of models and independent variables. Also, the IFT between the surfactant solution and normal alkanes was selected as the output of the models and the dependent variable. Moreover, the implemented models were evaluated using statistical analyses and applied graphical methods. The results showed that DT, ET, and GBRT could predict the data with average absolute relative error values of 4.12%, 3.52%, and 2.71%, respectively. The R-squared of all implementation models is higher than 0.98, and for the best model, GBRT, it is 0.9939. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis using the Pearson approach was utilized to detect correlation coefficients of the input parameters. Based on this technique, the results of sensitivity analysis demonstrated that PIT, surfactant concentration, and HLB had the greatest effect on IFT, respectively. Finally, GBRT was statistically credited by the Leverage approach.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural and Furfural Chemistry Toward Biobased Surfactants

The use of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), furfural, and furan as scaffolds for designing alternative surfactants is a rapidly developing research area. This Review gathers recent examples highlighting the variety of methods for grafting the necessary polar and non-polar appendages, exploiting the specific chemical reactivity of each of these platform molecules. While the furan (or tetrahydrofuran) backbone is maintained in some targeted amphiphiles, alternatives using rearranged HMF or furfural such as cyclopentanols or furanones have also been reported. This topic is an illustration of the diversification of the use of HMF and other biobased furanic platform molecules in the field of fine and specialty chemicals. The surfactants sector, which concerns some of the most largely consumed chemicals in everyday life, and still mostly produced from fossil resources, will benefit from such alternatives enabling increased renewable carbon content and structural innovation.

The Salinity-Phase-Inversion method (SPI-slope): A straightforward experimental approach to assess the hydrophilic-lipophilic-ratio and the salt-sensitivity of surfactants

HYPOTHESIS

The salinity at which the dynamic phase inversion of the reference system C₁₀E₄/n-Octane/Water occurs in the presence of increasing amounts of a test surfactant S₂ provides quantitative information on the hydrophilic/lipophilic ratio and on the sensitivity to NaCl_aq of S₂.

EXPERIENCES

The Salinities causing the Phase Inversion (SPI) of the reference system mixed with 12 ionic and 10 nonionic well-defined surfactants are determined in order to quantify the contributions of the nature of the polar head and of the alkyl chain length.

FINDINGS

The SPI varies linearly upon the addition of S₂. The slope of the straight variation with the molar fraction of S₂ is called the "SPI-slope". It quantifies the hydrophilic/lipophilic ratio of S₂ in saline environment and its salt-sensitivity with respect to the reference surfactant C₁₀E₄. The SPI-slopes of C₁₂ surfactants bearing different polar heads are found to decrease in the following order: C₁₂NMe₃Br > C₁₂E₈ > C₁₂E₇ ≥C₁₂SO₃Na ≈ C₁₂COONa ≥ C₁₂SO₄Na > C₁₂E₆ > C₁₂E₅ > C₁₂E₃. This classification is different from that obtained when the phase inversion is caused by a change in temperature (PIT-slope method) because the addition of NaCl in significant amounts (3 to 10 wt%) partially screens the ionic heads and diminishes their apparent hydrophilicities. A simple model, valid for all types of nonionic surfactants, is developed on the basis of the HLD_N equation (Normalized Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Deviation) to express the SPI-slope as a function of the hydrophilic/lipophilic ratio (PACN₂) and the salinity coefficient (δ₂) of S₂. All studied surfactants are positioned on a 2D map according to the values of their SPI-slope and their PIT-slope to graphically highlight their hydrophilic/lipophilic ratio and their salt-sensitivity. Finally, a linear model connecting the PIT-slope and the SPI-slope is derived for nonionics, emphasizing that the thermal partitioning of C₁₀E₄ towards n-octane is much greater in the PIT-slope than in the SPI-slope experiments.

Salt-tolerance of alkyl-glyceryl ether carboxylates hydrotropes and surfactants. Dramatic effect of the methylation of the glyceryl spacer

HYPOTHESIS

The insertion of polyether spacers between the anionic head and the alkyl chain of ionic surfactants significantly improves their salt-tolerance. The aim of this work is to study whether the petro-based polyethoxy spacer can be replaced by a glyceryl ether group for high salinity applications.

EXPERIMENTS

A series of amphiphilic sodium salts of alkyl glyceryl ether carboxylates are synthesized with different alkyl chain lengths from 4 to 12 and various spacers between the glyceryl and the carboxylate groups. Their aggregation behavior is studied by tensiometry and their amphiphilicities are assessed by the PIT-slope method. The dramatic effect of the methylation of the glyceryl spacer on the salt-tolerance is highlighted, and rationalized by DFT calculations and molecular dynamics.

FINDINGS

In contrast to the corresponding sodium soap, n-C₆H₁₃-CO₂Na, and to the non-methylated counterpart, the sodium salt of 1-pentyl-3-methyl glyceryl ether methylene carboxylate ([5.0.1]-CH₂CO₂Na) exhibits an excellent salt-tolerance since it remains water-soluble with NaCl or CaCl₂ concentrations greater than 20 wt% at 25 °C. Amphiphiles with short alkyl chains (<C₈) act as hydrotropes whereas longer compounds behave as surfactants whose CMC are lower than their corresponding isomers with ethoxy spacers n-C_i(EO)₂CH₂CO₂Na.

How to Use the Normalized Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Deviation (HLDN) Concept for the Formulation of Equilibrated and Emulsified Surfactant-Oil-Water Systems for Cosmetics and Pharmaceutical Products

The effects of surfactant molecules involved in macro-, mini-, nano-, and microemulsions used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals are related to their amphiphilic interactions with oil and water phases. Basic ideas on their behavior when they are put together in a system have resulted in the energy balance concept labeled the hydrophilic-lipophilic deviation (HLD) from optimum formulation. This semiempirical equation integrates in a simple linear relationship the effects of six to eight variables including surfactant head and tail, sometimes a cosurfactant, oil-phase nature, aqueous-phase salinity, temperature, and pressure. This is undoubtedly much more efficient than the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) which has been used since 1950. The new HLD is quite important because it allows researchers to model and somehow predict the phase behavior, the interfacial tension between oil and water phases, their solubilization in single-phase microemulsion, as well as the corresponding properties for various kinds of macroemulsions. However, the HLD correlation, which has been developed and used in petroleum applications, is sometimes difficult to apply accurately in real cases involving ionic–nonionic surfactant mixtures and natural polar oils, as it is the case in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals. This review shows the confusion resulting from the multiple definitions of HLD and of the surfactant parameter, and proposes a “normalized” Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Deviation (HLDN) equation with a surfactant contribution parameter (SCP), to handle more exactly the effects of formulation variables on the phase behavior and the micro/macroemulsion properties.

Use of the normalized hydrophilic-lipophilic-deviation (HLDN) equation for determining the equivalent alkane carbon number (EACN) of oils and the preferred alkane carbon number (PACN) of nonionic surfactants by the fish-tail method (FTM)

The standard HLD (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic-Deviation) equation expressing quantitatively the deviation from the "optimum formulation" of Surfactant/Oil/Water systems is normalized and simplified into a relation including only the three more meaningful formulation variables, namely (i) the "Preferred Alkane Carbon Number" PACN which expresses the amphiphilicity of the surfactant, (ii) the "Equivalent Alkane Carbon Number" EACN which accurately reflects the hydrophobicity of the oil and (iii) the temperature which has a strong influence on ethoxylated surfactants and is thus selected as an effective, continuous and reversible scanning variable. The PACN and EACN values, as well as the "temperature-sensitivity-coefficient"τ of surfactants are determined by reviewing available data in the literature for 17 nonionic n-alkyl polyglycol ether (C_iE_j) surfactants and 125 well-defined oils. The key information used is the so-called "fish-tail-temperature" T* which is a unique data point in true ternary C_iE_j/Oil/Water fish diagrams. The PACNs of C_iE_j surfactants are compared with other descriptors of their amphiphilicity, namely, the cloud point, the HLB number and the PIT-slope value. The EACNs of oils are rationalized by the Effective-Packing-Parameter concept and modelled thanks to the COSMO-RS theory.

Hexahydrofarnesyl as an original bio-sourced alkyl chain for the preparation of glycosides surfactants with enhanced physicochemical properties

Five new bio-based surfactants have been synthetized by coupling hexahydrofarnesol with mono and di-saccharides. Hexahydrofarnesol (3,7,11-trimethyl-dodecan-1-ol) is a by-product of the industrial production of farnesane, a sustainable aviation fuel obtained by a fermentation process from sugar feedstocks. Using hexahydrofarnesol as the lipophilic starting material allows obtaining 100% bio-based surfactants while valorizing an industrial by-product. Moreover, the C₁₅-branched alkyl chain brings unique properties to the surfactants. This paper presents a physicochemical characterization of these new surfactants including their behaviors in water (water solubility, critical micellar concentration and surface tension) and in oil/water systems (interfacial tension against model oil and ternary phase behavior). Their hydrophilicities have been determined thanks to the PIT-slope method and compared to the ones of standard surfactants with linear alkyl chains, in order to distinguish the contributions of the sugar polar heads and of the branched hexahydrofarnesyl lipophilic chain. This novel class of surfactants combines the properties of sugar-based surfactants (low sensitivity to temperature and salinity, ability to form Winsor III microemulsion systems over a wide range of salinity), along with specificities linked to the branched alkyl chain (lower Krafft temperature, low surface tension).

The novelty of this work lies in the valorization of an original by-product into new sugar-based surfactants presenting effective properties.
