Dynamical behaviors of structural, constrained and free water in calcium- and magnesium-silicate-hydrate gels

Backscattering silicon spectrometer (BASIS): sixteen years in advanced materials characterization

Quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) is an experimental technique that can measure parameters of mobility, such as diffusion jump rate and jump length, as well as localized relaxations of chemical species (molecules, ions, and segments) at atomic and nanometer length scales. Due to the high penetrative power of neutrons and their sensitivity to neutron scattering cross-section of chemical species, QENS can effectively probe mobility inside most bulk materials. This review focuses on QENS experiments performed using a neutron backscattering silicon spectrometer (BASIS) to explore the dynamics in various materials and understand their structure-property relationship. BASIS is a time-of-flight near-backscattering inverted geometry spectrometer with very high energy resolution (approximately 0.0035 meV of full width at half maximum), allowing measurements of dynamics on nano to picosecond timescales. The science areas studied with BASIS are diverse, with a focus on soft matter topics, including traditional biological and polymer science experiments, as well as measurements of fluids ranging from simple hydrocarbons and aqueous solutions to relatively complex room-temperature ionic liquids and deep-eutectic solvents, either in the bulk state or confined. Additionally, hydrogen confined in various materials is routinely measured on BASIS. Other topics successfully investigated at BASIS include quantum fluids, spin glasses, and magnetism. BASIS has been in the user program since 2007 at the Spallation Neutron Source of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, an Office of Science User Facility supported by the U.S. Department of Energy. Over the past sixteen years, BASIS has contributed to various scientific disciplines, exploring the structure and dynamics of many chemical species and their fabrication for practical applications. A comprehensive review of BASIS contributions and capabilities would be an asset to the materials science community, providing insights into employing the neutron backscattering technique for advanced materials characterization.

A Molecular Description of Hydrogel Forming Polymers for Cement-Based Printing Paste Applications

This research endeavors to link the physical and chemical characteristics of select polymer hydrogels to differences in printability when used as printing aids in cement-based printing pastes. A variety of experimental probes including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), NMR-diffusion ordered spectroscopy (DOSY), quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) using neutron backscattering spectroscopy, and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), along with molecular dynamic simulations, were used. Conjectures based on objective measures of printability and physical and chemical-molecular characteristics of the polymer gels are emerging that should help target printing aid selection and design, and mix formulation. Molecular simulations were shown to link higher hydrogen bond probability and larger radius of gyration to higher viscosity gels. Furthermore, the higher viscosity gels also produced higher elastic properties, as measured by neutron backscattering spectroscopy.

Nanoscale Mobility of Aqueous Polyacrylic Acid in Dental Restorative Cements

Hydrogen dynamics in a time range from hundreds of femtoseconds to nanoseconds can be directly analyzed using neutron spectroscopy, where information on the inelastic and quasi-elastic scattering, hereafter INS and QENS, can be obtained. In this study, we applied these techniques to understand how the nanoscale mobility of the aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid (PAA) used in conventional glass ionomer cements (GICs) changes under confinement. Combining the spectroscopic analysis with calorimetric results, we were able to separate distinct motions within both the liquid and the GICs. The QENS analysis revealed that the self-diffusion translational motion identified in the liquid is also visible in the GIC. However, as a result of the formation of the cement matrix and its setting, both translational diffusion and residence time differed from the PAA solution. When comparing the local diffusion obtained for the selected GIC, the only noticeable difference was observed for the slow dynamics associated with the polymer chain. Additionally, over short-term aging, progressive water binding to the polymer chain occurred in one of the investigated GICs. Finally, a considerable change in the density of the GIC without progressive water binding indicates an increased polymer cross-linking. Taken together, our results suggest that accurate and deep understanding of polymer-water binding, polymer cross-linking, as well as material density changes occurring during the maturation process of GIC are necessary for the development of advanced dental restorative materials.

Water as a Probe of the Colloidal Properties of Cement

Cement is produced by mixing mineral phases based on calcium silicates and aluminates with water. The hydration reaction of the mixture leads to a synthetic material with outstanding properties that can be used as a binder for construction applications. Despite the importance of cement in society, for a long time, the chemical reactions involved in its hydration remained poorly understood as a result of the complexity of hydration processes, nanostructure, and transport phenomena. This feature article reviews the recently obtained results using water as a probe to detail the essential features in the setting process. By examining the peculiar physicochemical properties of water, fundamental information on the evolving inorganic colloid matrix can be deduced, ranging from the fractal nanostructure of the inorganic silicate framework to the transport phenomena inside the developing porosity. A similar approach can be transferred to the investigation of a plethora of other complex systems, where water plays the main role in determining the final structural and transport properties (i.e., biomaterials, hydrogels, and colloids).

Hydration-dependent dynamics of water in calcium-silicate-hydrate: A QENS study by global model

HYPOTHESIS

In a saturated cement paste, there are three different types of water: the structural water chemically reacted with cement, the constrained water absorbed to the surface of the pores, and the free water in the center of the pores. Each type has different physicochemical state and unique relation to cement porosity. The different water types have different dynamics which can be detected using quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). Since the porosity of a hardened cement paste is impacted strongly by the water to cement ratio (w/c), it should be possible to extract the hydration dependence of the pores by exploiting the dynamical parameters of the confined water.

EXPERIMENTS

Three C-S-H samples with different water levels, 8%, 17% and 30% were measured using QENS. The measurements were carried out in the scattering vector, Q, range from 0.5 Å^-1 to 1.3 Å^-1, and in the temperature interval from 230 K to 280 K. The data were analyzed using a novel global model developed for cement QENS spectra.

FINDINGS

The results show that while increasing the water content, the structural water index (SWI) decreases and the confining radius, a, increases. Both SWI and a have a linear relationship with the water content. The Arrhenius plot of the translational relaxation time shows that the constrained water dominates the non-structural water at water contents lower than 17%. The rotational activation energy is smaller for lower water content. The analysis demonstrated that our newly proposed global model is practical and useful for analyzing cement QENS data.
