Versatile polyvinylidene fluoride hybrid ultrafiltration membranes with superior antifouling, antibacterial and self-cleaning properties for water treatment

Ti3C2Tx MXene@MOF decorated polyvinylidene fluoride membrane for the remediation of heavy metals ions and desalination

Nowadays, the evolution of two-dimensional materials like transition metal carbides (MXene) prepares a novel path to surpass the "trade-off" between the membrane permeation and rejection rates. Based on water swelling and oxidation vulnerability, MXene membranes showed vivid defects such as inadequate stability, detrimental adsorption, and haphazardly stacked nanosheets. Here, we prepared Ti3C2Tx MXene@metal-organic frameworks nanosheets from aminated metal-organic framework-101 (NH2-MIL-101(Al)) via the in-situ growth method and incorporated them into the thin-film polymer to acquire desirable MXene nanosheets with tailor-made structures. The earned modified thin-film nanocomposite membrane showed high salt rejection for Na2SO4 (98.6 ± 0.5%), MgSO4 (96.9 ± 0.7%), MgCl2 (84.5 ± 0.8%), and NaCl (82.5 ± 0.8%), and also showed an improved permeation rate by three times (17.1 ± 0.2 L m-2. h-1. bar-1). Concurrently, the rejection rate of five different types of heavy metal ions (Ni2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+) was tested and denoted more than a 95.2 ± 0.5% rejection rate for all of them, notably high for Mn2+ (97.6 ± 0.4%). After modification, the flux recovery rate was as high as 95.3 ± 0.4%, denoting more than 30% improvement; besides, anti-compactness features enhanced by nearly 34 ± 0.7%. The long-term water permeation kept 91.5 ± 0.9% of its initial rate indicating almost 40 ± 0.8% enhancement. In addition, the rejection performance of Na2SO4 for the optimized membrane was more than 97% even after two weeks.

Polyvinylidene fluoride multi-scale nanofibrous membrane modified using N-halamine with high filtration efficiency and durable antibacterial properties for air filtration

HYPOTHESIS

Particulate matter (PM) pollution and the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic have increased demand for protective masks. However, typical protective masks only intercept particles and produce peculiar odors if worn for extended periods owing to bacterial growth. Therefore, new protective materials with good filtration and antibacterial capabilities are required.

EXPERIMENTS

In this study, we prepared multi-scale polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous membranes for efficient filtration and durable antibacterial properties via N-halamine modification.

FINDINGS

The N-halamine-modified nanofibrous membrane (PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl) had sufficient active chlorine content (800 ppm), and the tensile stress and strain were improved compared with the original membrane, from 6.282 to 9.435 MPa and from 51.3 % to 56.4 %, respectively. To further improve the interception efficiency, ultrafine nanofibers (20-35 nm) were spun on PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl nanofibrous membranes, and multi-scale PVDF-PAA-TMP-Cl nanofibrous membranes were prepared. These membranes exhibited good PM_0.3 interception (99.93 %), low air resistance (79 Pa), promising long-term PM_2.5 purification ability, and high bactericidal efficiency (>98 %). After ten chlorination cycles, the antibacterial efficiency against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus exceeded 90 %; hence, the material demonstrated highly efficient filtration and repeatable antibacterial properties. The results of this study have implications for the development of air and water filtration systems and multi-functional protective materials.

Surface-constructing of visible-light Bi2WO6/CeO2 nanophotocatalyst grafted PVDF membrane for degradation of tetracycline and humic acid

The synthesis of Bi₂WO₆ and CeO₂ photocatalytic nanomaterials exhibit a great ability to photodegrade the antibiotics and shown excellent oxidation of various organic pollutants. Heterostructure 1:1 & 2:1 Bi₂WO₆/CeO₂ nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via the facile sono-dispersion method and exquisite photocatalytic activity. The 0.5 wt% of nanocomposites were well-grafted on PVDF membrane surface via an in-situ polymerization method using polyacrylic acid. The fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra demonstrated that the network formation in PVDF induced by the -COOH functional group in acrylic acid. The grafted membrane morphology and strong binding ability over the membranes were validated by scanning electron microscope with energy dispersion (SEM-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), respectively. The permeate flux of 49.2 L.m^-2 h^-1 and 41.65 L.m^-2 h were observed for tetracycline and the humic acid solution respectively for 1 wt% of PVP and 0.5 wt% of photocatalytic nanomaterials in PVDF membrane. The tetracycline and humic acid photodegradation rate of 82% and 78% and total resistance of 1.43 × 10¹⁰ m^-1 and 1.64 × 10¹⁰ m^-1, 83.5% and 77% flux recovery ratio were observed with N5 membrane. The 2:1 Bi₂WO₆/CeO₂ nanocomposite grafted membrane showed a high permeate flux and better photodegradation ability of organic pollutants in the wastewater.

Improved anti-organic fouling and antibacterial properties of PVDF ultrafiltration membrane by one-step grafting imidazole-functionalized graphene oxide

At present, membrane fouling is a thorny issue that limits the development of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite membrane, which seriously affects its separation performance and service lifespan. Herein, an imidazole-functionalized graphene oxide (Im-GO) with hydrophilicity and antibacterial performance was synthesized, and it was used as a modifier to improve the anti-organic fouling and antibacterial properties of PVDF membrane. The anti-organic fouling test showed that the maximum flux recovery ratios against bovine serum albumin and humic acid were 88.9% and 94.5%, respectively. Conspicuously, the grafted imidazole groups could effectively prevent the bacteria from growing on the membrane surface. It was gratifying that the antibacterial modifier Im-GO was almost not lost from the hybrid membranes even by the ultrasonic treatment, which was different from the conventional release-killing antibacterial agents. Owing to the long-term anti-organic fouling and antibacterial properties, Im-GO/PVDF hybrid membranes exhibit a great application potential in the fields of rough separation and concentration of biomedical products.

Recent development of photocatalytic nanomaterials in mixed matrix membrane for emerging pollutants and fouling control, membrane cleaning process

Membrane-based separation is an area of extensive research in wastewater treatment, which includes the control of pollution and reuse of water. The fabrication and modification membranes for prevention and reduction of pollution to provide quality water with fouling-free membranes through the wastewater treatment are the progressive approaches in the industries. Several research works have been extensively working on modification and fabrication polymer membranes with integration of advanced oxidation process (AOP) to overcome the membrane fouling. This review describes the modification of membranes with various nanomaterials such as inorganic and modified carbon which can be used for pollution control and enhance the anti-fouling properties of ultrafiltration membranes. The effects on nanomaterials loading percentage, nanomaterials interaction with the polymers and rejection performances of the surface tuned membrane are elaborated. Secondly, the fouled membrane chemical cleaning process and NaOCl adverse effect on polymer structure are critically investigated. Moreover, state-of-art in the photocatalytic self-cleaning process are reviewed in this manuscript, and future perspectives on fouling mitigation based on AOP integrated membrane technology have also discussed.

Fabrication of a Dual-Action Membrane with Both Antibacterial and Anticoagulant Properties via Cationic Polyelectrolyte-Induced Phase Separation

The development of microorganisms and formation of thrombus on a biomaterial surface can seriously lead to device failure and threaten human health. Nonetheless, a surface that has both antibacterial and anticoagulant properties has scarcely been developed. Herein, a novel dual-action membrane composed of polyethersulfone (PES) bulk material and a hydrophilic anionic poly-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (PAMPS) polymer has been prepared via the cationic antibacterial agent poly(hexamethylene biguanide) (PHMB)-induced phase separation technique. Interestingly, the resultant membrane can offer tunable antibacterial and anticoagulant properties, while maintaining satisfactory permeability and greatly increasing selectivity. The membrane also shows excellent hydrophilicity, a well-defined porous surface, and cross section with a sponge gradient structure. Furthermore, the PHMB-PAMPS complex formed on the membrane surface displays outstanding long-term stability, which is crucial for further practical applications. More importantly, the hollow fiber membrane fabricated by the cationic polyelectrolyte-induced phase separation technique confirms its capability to control the membrane permeability (257.4 L·m^-2·h^-1·bar^-1) and selectivity (95.9%) without destroying the membrane structure. The present work opens a straightforward and efficient avenue for the rational design of a functional surface to fight biomedical material-associated infections.

Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP) nanoparticles based mixed matrix membranes for removal of heavy metal ions

The removal of heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater is essential as they pose serious threats to human health and the environment. In this study, novel poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-alpha-zirconium phosphate (PVDF-α-ZrP) mixed matrix membranes (MMM) were prepared via the phase inversion method. Membranes with different α-ZrP nanoparticles (NPs) loadings (0.25, 0.50, 0.75, or 1.00 wt%) were fabricated. The impacts of α-ZrP NP loading on the membrane's morphology, functionality, surface charge, and hydrophilicity were evaluated. Fourier-transform infrared and the energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were performed to verify the presence of α-ZrP NPs in the fabricated membranes. The PVDF membranes became more hydrophilic after incorporating the α-ZrP NPs. The thermal and mechanical stability and porosity of the PVDF-α-ZrP MMM were higher than those of the pristine PVDF membrane. The increased hydrophilicity, pore size and porosity and reduced surface roughness of the PVDF-α-ZrP membrane led to significant flux increase and reduced fouling propensity. The PVDF-α-ZrP membrane containing 1.00 wt% α-ZrP was capable of removing 42.8% (Cd²⁺), 93.1% (Cu²⁺), 44.4% (Ni²⁺), 91.2% (Pb²⁺), and 44.2% (Zn²⁺) from an aqueous solution at neutral pH during filtration.

Grafting polysiloxane onto ultrafiltration membranes to optimize surface energy and mitigate fouling

Conventional approaches to mitigate fouling of membrane surfaces impart hydrophilicity to the membrane surface, which increases the water of hydration and fluidity near the surface. By contrast, we demonstrate here that tuning the membrane surface energy close to that of the dispersive component of water surface tension (21.8 mN m^-1) can also improve the antifouling properties of the membrane. Specifically, ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were first modified using polydopamine (PDA) followed by grafting of amine-terminated polysiloxane (PSi-NH₂). For example, with 2 g L^-1 PSi-NH₂ coating solution, the obtained coating layer contains 53% by mass fraction PSi-NH₂ and exhibits a total surface energy of 21 mN m^-1, decreasing the adsorption of bovine serum albumin by 44% compared to the unmodified membrane. When challenged with 1 g L^-1 sodium alginate in a constant-flux crossflow system, the PSi-NH₂-grafted membrane exhibits a 70% lower fouling rate than the pristine membrane at a water flux of 110 L (m² h)^-1 and good stability when cleaned with NaOH solutions.

Optimized anti-biofouling performance of bactericides/cellulose nanocrystals composites modified PVDF ultrafiltration membrane for micro-polluted source water purification

The covalently functionalized cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) composites were synthesized by bonding common bactericides, such as dodecyl dimethyl benzyl ammonium chloride (DDBAC), ZnO and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets, onto the CNC's surface. Then, the DDBAC/CNC, ZnO/CNC and GO/CNC nanocomposites modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membranes were fabricated by a simple one-step non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) process. The resultant hybrid membranes possessed porous and rough surfaces with more finger-like macropores that even extended through the entire cross-section. The hydrophilicity, permeability, antibacterial and antifouling performance and mechanism of the hybrid ultrafiltration membranes were evaluated and compared in detail, aiming at screening a superior hybrid membrane for practical application in micro-polluted source water purification. Among these newly-developed hybrid membranes, GO/CNC/PVDF exhibited an enhanced perm-selectivity with a water flux of 230 L/(m² h bar) and humic acid rejection of 92%, the improved antibacterial activity (bacteriostasis rate of 93%) and antifouling performance (flux recovery rate (FRR) of >90%) being due to the optimized pore structure, higher surface roughness, incremental hydrophilicity and electronegativity. A lower biofouling level after three weeks' filtration of the actual micro-polluted source water further demonstrated that embedding the hydrophilic and antibacterial GO/CNC nanocomposite into the polymer matrix is an effective strategy to improve membrane anti-biofouling ability.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets functionalized composite membrane with self-cleaning and antibacterial performance

Membrane fouling significantly impedes membrane performance and thus short lifespan of the membrane. Membranes that functionalized with photocatalytic activity are deemed as an effective and novel approach to settle membrane fouling. The membranes with self-cleaning and antibacterial performance were fabricated via facilely filtering g-C₃N₄ nanosheets onto polyacrylonitrile (PAN) porous substrates. The g-C₃N₄ nanosheets were exfoliated by acid etching and ultrasound treatment, and the exfoliated nanosheets was verified by Fourier transform infrared spectra, Atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The g-C₃N₄ nanosheets functionalized composite membranes have a water permeability of 11.70 L m^-2 h^-1 bar^-1 and a good antibacterial activity. In addition, the membranes could be restored their original permeability and their surfaces were close to initial color even after three cycles rejecting dyes and post treatment under irradiation with visible light. Besides, the degradable and antimicrobial mechanisms of the membranes were investigated respectively. These g-C3N4 nanosheets composite membranes with self-cleaning and antimicrobial properties have a potential feasibility in water treatment, and provide an alternative method for fabricating self-cleaning membranes.

Guanidyl-functionalized graphene/polysulfone mixed matrix ultrafiltration membrane with superior permselective, antifouling and antibacterial properties for water treatment

Mixed matrix membranes blended with graphene-based nanomaterials have great potential in water and wastewater treatment on account of their multiple functionalities. To solve the complicated biofouling problem and diversify the applications of membranes, novel synergistic antibacterial guanidyl-functionalized graphene/polysulfone (GFG/PSF) mixed matrix ultrafiltration membranes were prepared by a non-solvent induced phase separation method. The guanidyl-functionalized graphene nanosheets were achieved by a two-step grafting process consisting of amination and guanidination and exhibited high dispersibility in the casting solution, which showed good compatibility with the polymer matrix. Besides the advantages of partially reduced graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets in creating a stronger interaction with the bacterial cell membrane to destroy the bacteria, the induced bidendate binding between guanidyl groups and phosphate groups on the cell wall can make high sterilization rate even at low concentrations. Different techniques including XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM, TEM, EDX, contact angle meter, filtration and antibacterial experiments were employed to characterize and investigate the performance of nanosheets and membranes. Compared with pure PSF membrane, the GFG/PSF mixed matrix membranes not only exhibited superior permeability and prominent antifouling property performance toward bovine serum albumin (BSA), but also displayed excellent antimicrobial activity and long-term duration toward Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Janus N,N-dimethylformamide as a solvent for a gradient porous wound dressing of poly(vinylidene fluoride) and as a reducer for in situ nano-silver production: anti-permeation, antibacterial and antifouling activities against multi-drug-resistant bacteria both in vitro and in vivo

The requirements for anti-permeation, anti-infection and antifouling when treating a malicious wound bed raise new challenges for wound dressing. The present study used N,N-dimethylformamide to treat poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) in order to obtain a dressing impregnated with in situ generated nano-silver particles (NS) via an immersion phase inversion method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the film was characterized by a two-layer asymmetric structure with different pore sizes (top layer: ∼0.4 μm; bottom layer: ∼1.8 μm). The moisture permeability test indicated that the film had an optimal water vapor transmission rate (WVTR: ∼2500 g m-2 per day). TEM images revealed the successful formation of spherical NS, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrated the integration of PVDF and NS (i.e., PVDF/NS). Correspondingly, the water contact angle measurements confirmed increased membrane surface hydrophobicity after NS integration. The inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry showed that the PVDF/NS displayed a continuous and safe release of silver ions. Moreover, in vitro experiments indicated that PVDF/NS films possessed satisfactory anti-permeation, antibacterial and antifouling activities against A. baumannii and E. coli bacteria, while they exhibited no obvious cytotoxicity toward mammalian HaCaT cells. Finally, the in vivo results showed that the nanoporous top layer of film could serve as a physical barrier to prevent bacterial penetration, whereas the microporous bottom layer could efficiently prevent bacterial infection caused by biofouling, leading to fast re-epithelialization via the enhancement of keratinocyte proliferation. Collectively, the results show that the PVDF/NS25 film has a promising application in wound treatment, especially for wounds infected by multi-drug-resistant bacteria such as A. baumannii.
