Injectable hydrogels for bone and cartilage tissue engineering: a review

Tissue engineering, using a combination of living cells, bioactive molecules, and three-dimensional porous scaffolds, is a promising alternative to traditional treatments such as the use of autografts and allografts for bone and cartilage tissue regeneration. Scaffolds, in this combination, can be applied either through surgery by implantation of cell-seeded pre-fabricated scaffolds, or through injection of a solidifying precursor and cell mixture, or as an injectable cell-seeded pre-fabricated scaffold. In situ forming and pre-fabricated injectable scaffolds can be injected directly into the defect site with complex shape and critical size in a minimally invasive manner. Proper and homogeneous distribution of cells, biological factors, and molecular signals in these injectable scaffolds is another advantage over pre-fabricated scaffolds. Due to the importance of injectable scaffolds in tissue engineering, here different types of injectable scaffolds, their design challenges, and applications in bone and cartilage tissue regeneration are reviewed.

Tuning Supramolecular Polymers' Amphiphilicity via Host-Guest Interfacial Recognition for Stabilizing Multiple Pickering Emulsions

Supramolecular host-guest chemistry bridging the adjustable amphiphilicity and macromolecular self-assembly is well advanced in aqueous media. However, the interfacial self-assembled behaviors have not been further exploited. Herein, we designed a β-cyclodextrin-grafted alginate/azobenzene-functionalized dodecyl (Alg-β-CD/AzoC12) supra-amphiphilic system that possessed tunable amphiphilicity by host-guest interfacial self-assembly. Especially, supra-amphiphilic aggregates could be utilized as highly efficient soft colloidal emulsifiers for stabilizing water-in-oil-water (W/O/W) Pickering emulsions due to the excellent interfacial activity. Meanwhile, the assembled particle structures could be modulated by adjusting the oil-water ratio, resulting from the tunable aggregation behavior of supra-amphiphilic macromolecules. Additionally, the interfacial adsorption films could be partially destroyed/reconstructed upon ultraviolet/visible irradiation due to the stimuli-altering balance of amphiphilicity of Alg-β-CD/AzoC12 polymers, further constructing the stimulus-responsive Pickering emulsions. Therefore, the supramolecular interfacial self-assembly-mediated approach not only technologically advances the continued development of creative templates to construct multifunctional soft materials with anisotropic structures but also serves as a creative bridge between supramolecular host-guest chemistry, colloidal interface science, and soft material technology.

Thermoresponsive Pentablock Copolymer on Silica: Temperature Effects on Adsorption, Surface Forces, and Friction

The adsorption of hydrophilic or amphiphilic multiblock copolymers provides a powerful means to produce well-defined "smart" surfaces, especially if one or several blocks are sensitive to external stimuli. We focus here on an A-B-A-B-A copolymer, where A is a cationic poly((3-acrylamido-propyl)-trimethylammonium chloride) (PAMPTMA) block containing 15 (end blocks) or 30 (middle block) repeat units and B is a neutral thermosensitive water-soluble poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) (PIPOZ) block with 50 repeat units. X-ray reflectivity and quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring were employed to study the adsorption of PAMPTMA₁₅-PIPOZ₅₀-PAMPTMA₃₀-PIPOZ₅₀-PAMPTMA₁₅ on silica surfaces. The latter technique was employed at different temperatures up to 50 °C. Surface forces and friction between the two silica surfaces across aqueous pentablock copolymer solutions at different temperatures were determined with the atomic force microscopy colloidal probe force and friction measurements. The cationic pentablock copolymer was found to have a high affinity to the negatively charged silica surface, leading to a thin (2 nm) and rigid adsorbed layer. A steric force was encountered at a separation of around 3 nm from hard wall contact. A capillary condensation of a polymer-rich phase was observed at the cloud point of the solution. The friction forces were evaluated using Amontons' rule modified with an adhesion term.

Quartz Crystal Microbalance Electronic Interfacing Systems: A Review

Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) sensors are actively being implemented in various fields due to their compatibility with different operating conditions in gaseous/liquid mediums for a wide range of measurements. This trend has been matched by the parallel advancement in tailored electronic interfacing systems for QCM sensors. That is, selecting the appropriate electronic circuit is vital for accurate sensor measurements. Many techniques were developed over time to cover the expanding measurement requirements (e.g., accommodating highly-damping environments). This paper presents a comprehensive review of the various existing QCM electronic interfacing systems. Namely, impedance-based analysis, oscillators (conventional and lock-in based techniques), exponential decay methods and the emerging phase-mass based characterization. The aforementioned methods are discussed in detail and qualitatively compared in terms of their performance for various applications. In addition, some theoretical improvements and recommendations are introduced for adequate systems implementation. Finally, specific design considerations of high-temperature microbalance systems (e.g., GaPO₄ crystals (GCM) and Langasite crystals (LCM)) are introduced, while assessing their overall system performance, stability and quality compared to conventional low-temperature applications.
