Reverse electrodialysis through nanochannels with inhomogeneously charged surfaces and overlapped electric double layers

In-depth understanding of boosting salinity gradient power generation by ionic diode

Ionic diodes constructed with asymmetric channel geometry and/or charge layout have shown outstanding performance in ion transport manipulation and reverse electrodialysis (RED) energy collection, but the working mechanism is still indistinct. Herein, we systematically investigated RED energy conversion of straight nanochannel-based bipolar ionic diode by coupling the Poisson-Nernst-Planck and Navier-Strokes equations. The effects of nanochannel structure, charging polarity, and symmetricity as well as properties of working fluids on the output voltage and output power were investigated. The results show that as high-concentration feeding solution is applied, the bipolar ionic diode-based RED system gives higher output voltage and output power compared to the unipolar channel RED system. Under optimal conditions, the voltage output of the bipolar channel is increased by ∼100% and the power output is increased by ∼260%. This work opens a new route for the design and optimization of high-performance salinity energy harvester as well as for water desalination.

A theoretical understanding of ionic current through a nanochannel driven by a viscosity gradient

HYPOTHESIS

Different thermodynamic forces owing to the gradient of temperature, electrical potential, or concentration can drive ionic current through charged membranes. It has been recently shown that a viscosity gradient can drive an electrical current through a negatively charged nanochannel (Wiener and Stein, arXiv: 1807.09106). A model description of this phenomenon, based on the Maxwell-Stefan equation will help unravel the dominating physical mechanisms in so-called visco-migration.

THEORY

To understand the physical mechanisms underlying this phenomenon, we employed the Maxwell-Stefan equation to develop a 1D model and obtain a relation between the flux of solvents and the driving forces. Viscosity gradients are known to drive transport, but the development of an electrical current has not been theoretically described prior to this work.

FINDINGS

Our 1D model shows that the ionic current depends on the ideality of the solvent, though both ideal and non-ideal scenarios demonstrated good agreement with experimental data. We employed the model to understand the impact of solution bulk ionic strength and pH on the drift of ionic species with same reservoirs solution properties. Our modeling results unveiled the significant impact of bulk solution properties on the drift of ions which is in agreement with the experiments. Moreover, we have shown that the diffusion gradient along the nanochannel contributes significantly into driving ionic species if we even apply a small ionic concentration gradient to both reservoirs. Our modeling results may pave the way for finding novel applications for drift of ions in a diffusion gradient, which can be induced by connecting reservoirs of different viscosity fluids.

Renewable Power Generation by Reverse Electrodialysis Using an Ion Exchange Membrane

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a promising technology to extract sustainable salinity gradient energy. However, the RED technology has not reached its full potential due to membrane efficiency and fouling and the complex interplay between ionic flows and fluidic configurations. We investigate renewable power generation by harnessing salinity gradient energy during reverse electrodialysis using a lab-scaled fluidic cell, consisting of two reservoirs separated by a nanoporous ion exchange membrane, under various flow rates (qf) and salt-concentration difference (Δc). The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of the single RED unit reveals a linear dependence, similar to an electrochemical cell. The experimental results show that the change of inflow velocity has an insignificant impact on the I-V data for a wide range of flow rates explored (0.01–1 mL/min), corresponding to a low-Peclet number regime. Both the maximum RED power density (Pc,m) and open-circuit voltage (ϕ0) increase with increasing Δc. On the one hand, the RED cell’s internal resistance (Rc) empirically reveals a power-law dependence of Rc∝Δc−α. On the other hand, the open-circuit voltage shows a logarithmic relationship of ϕ0=BlnΔc+β. These experimental results are consistent with those by a nonlinear numerical simulation considering a single charged nanochannel, suggesting that parallelization of charged nano-capillaries might be a good upscaling model for a nanoporous membrane for RED applications.

Influence of salt valence on the rectification behavior of nanochannels

Taking account of the influence of electroosmotic flow, the behavior of the ion current rectification of a charged conical nanochannel is studied theoretically focusing on the effect of ionic valence. A continuum-based model comprising coupled Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations for the ionic mass transport and Navier-Stokes equations for the hydrodynamic field is adopted. We show that if the bulk salt concentration is fixed, the behavior of the current-voltage curve depends highly on the ionic valence, which arises from the difference in ionic strength and ion diffusivity. As the bulk salt concentration varies, the rectification factor shows a local maximum, and the bulk salt concentration at which it occurs depends upon the salt valence: the higher the valence the lower that concentration. However, regardless of the salt valence, the ionic strength at which that local maximum occurs is essentially the same, implying that the thickness of electric double layer is the key factor. Due to the difference in ionic diffusivity, the magnitude of the rectification factor depends upon the type of salt. For example, the rectification factor of KCl is larger than that of KNO₃. The qualitative behavior of the ion current rectification of a positively charged conical nanochannel is similar to that of a negatively charged nanochannel.
