New Preparation Methods for Pore Formation on Polysulfone Membranes

This work described the preparation of membranes based on aromatic polysulfones through the phase-inversion method induced by a nonsolvent, generating the phase separation (NIPS) process. Three new techniques, including the nano iron acid etching method, base hydrolysis method of crosslinked polymers, and base hydrolysis method of a reactive component in a binary polymer blend, were developed for pore creation on membranes. The modified polymers and obtained membranes were carefully characterized. The uniform pores were successfully created by base hydrolysis of the crosslinked polymers and obtained at the size of the crosslinker. Moreover, homogeneous pores were created after base hydrolysis of the membranes prepared from binary polymer blends due to the internal changes in the polymer structure. The separation performance of membranes was tested with different inorganic salt solutions and compared with commercially known membranes. These new membranes exhibited high water flux (up to 3000 L/m^-2·h^-1 at 10 bar and at 25 °C) and reasonable rejections for monovalent (21-44%) and multivalent ions (18-60%), depending on the different etching of the hydrolysis times. The comparison of these membranes with commercial ones confirmed their good separation performance and high potential application for water treatment applications.

Facile Strategy to Extend Stability of Simple Component-Alumina-Supported Palladium Catalysts for Efficient Methane Combustion

It is of practical importance to develop a stable and accessible methane combustion catalyst which could retain an excellent activity under drastic conditions. Herein, we introduce a facile approach to extend the stability of conventional Pd/Al₂O₃ catalysts through tailoring the pore size of mesoporous aluminas (MAs) and the interaction between Pd and Al. By modulating the addition of templates (deoxycholic acid and polyvinylpyrrolidone), a series of MAs with tunable and uniform pore size were obtained through a designed sol-gel method. Unexpectedly, Pd/MA-800-5 catalyst prepared with relatively large pore size (ca. 12 nm) MAs exhibited an efficient and sustained performance under a variety of operating conditions, while those prepared with small pore size (ca. 5-7 nm) MAs suffered from a significant loss of activity during high temperature cyclic reactions (280-850 °C) due to the decomposition of confined PdO. The enhancement could be attributed to the suitable particle size, higher crystallinity, generated active sites, improved reducibility, and thermal stability of PdO species. Moreover, the variation of pore size also resulted in a different reaction mechanism. Such a pore size promotion strategy effectively invoked a superior catalytic performance while keeping the catalyst components simple, which can be extended to prepare other high-performance metal oxide-supported catalysts for catalytic applications.

Synthesis of Ordered Mesoporous Zr-Al Composite Oxides with Excellent Structural and Textural Properties and Extremely High Stability

Ordered mesoporous Zr-Al composite oxide materials (denoted as OMZA-x) with different Zr contents have been synthesized by a solvent evaporation-inducing self-assembly procedure associated with a thermal treatment at 100 °C. A cooperative co-assembly process of amphiphilic triblock copolymer F127 molecules and inorganic hydroxyl species originated from the hydrolysis of Zr and Al precursors was proposed to explain the synthesis of OMZA-x. Compared to ordered mesoporous alumina prepared without introducing Zr species, the resultant OMZA-x exhibited a much more ordered mesostructure combined with a distinct increase in the pore volume and specific surface area. The highly homogenous doping of Zr into the mesopore walls together with the formation of Zr-O-Al bonds can effectively enhance the thermal and hydrothermal stability of OMZA-x. For instance, the ordered mesostructure and excellent textural properties of OMZA-6 prepared with the optimum atomic ratio of Al to Zr of 6 could be well maintained even after a high-temperature treatment at 1000 °C for 1 h or a hydrothermal treatment at 100 °C for 6 h.

Biomolecule-Assisted Synthesis of Hierarchical Multilayered Boehmite and Alumina Nanosheets for Enhanced Molybdenum Adsorption

The effective utilization of various biomolecules for creating a series of mesoporous boehmite (γ-AlOOH) and gamma-alumina (γ-Al₂ O₃ ) nanosheets with unique hierarchical multilayered structures is demonstrated. The nature and concentration of the biomolecules strongly influence the degree of the crystallinity, the morphology, and the textural properties of the resulting γ-AlOOH and γ-Al₂ O₃ nanosheets, allowing for easy tuning. The hierarchical γ-AlOOH and γ-Al₂ O₃ multilayered nanosheets synthesized by using biomolecules exhibit enhanced crystallinity, improved particle separation, and well-defined multilayered structures compared to those obtained without biomolecules. More impressively, these γ-AlOOH and γ-Al₂ O₃ nanosheets possess high surface areas up to 425 and 371 m²  g^-1 , respectively, due to their mesoporous nature and hierarchical multilayered structure. When employed for molybdenum adsorption toward medical radioisotope production, the hierarchical γ-Al₂ O₃ multilayered nanosheets exhibit Mo adsorption capacities of 33.1-40.8 mg g^-1 . The Mo adsorption performance of these materials is influenced by the synergistic combination of the crystallinity, the surface area, and the pore volume. It is expected that the proposed biomolecule-assisted strategy may be expanded for the creation of other 3D mesoporous oxides in the future.
