In situ-generated yttrium-based nanoparticle/polyethersulfone composite adsorptive membranes: Development, characterization, and membrane formation mechanism

Evaluation of the formation and antifouling properties of a novel adsorptive homogeneous mixed matrix membrane with in situ generated Zr-based nanoparticles

In situ generation is a powerful technique used to prepare homogenous adsorptive mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing functional nanoparticles, although the mechanism of formation of the membranes is not yet clear and there have been few published evaluations of membrane fouling. We therefore used this method to prepare a novel homogeneous adsorptive Zr-based nanoparticle–polyethersulfone (PES) MMM and systematically studied the mechanism of membrane formation at the atomic level. As the amount of ZrOCl₂·8H₂O in the casting solution increased, the phase inversion kinetics changed from instantaneous demixing due to the thermodynamic enhancement effect to a delayed demixing process caused by viscosity hindrance. The in situ generation of nanoparticles in these MMMs can be divided into three stages: the migration stage, the exfoliation stage and the stable stage. Our findings provide a fundamental understanding of the interface chemistry in the development of in situ generated MMMs. M2 showed a higher adsorption of As(v) than the pure PES membrane and could be reused after regeneration. The removal of As(v) from the M2 filtration system mainly took place via adsorption rather than size exclusion, as confirmed by EDS and experimental data. The presence of humic acid slightly inhibited the removal of As(v) during the filtration process as a result of the barrier effect caused by the formation of a filter cake via humic acid fouling. The filtration of a bovine serum albumin solution showed that the MMM with in situ generated nanoparticles had better antifouling properties than the PES membrane alone in multiple applications as a result of the enhanced hydrophilic surface.

A homogeneous in situ generated Zr-based NPs/PES mixed matrix membrane with enhanced adsorptive and antifouling performance was developed.

Mechanism of fluoride removal by AlCl3 and Al13: The role of aluminum speciation

Coagulation is an important defluorination process. However, because of the poor sedimentation properties, conventional coagulants often result in limited defluorination performance and excessive residual aluminum. In this study, AlCl₃ and the highly-positively-charged molecule [AlO₄Al₁₂(OH)₂₄(H₂O)₁₂]⁷⁺ (Al₁₃) was utilized to treat fluoride-containing water. By comparison, the role of aluminum speciation in fluoride removal was elucidated. Under initial pH of 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0, the highest defluorination efficiencies of high-fluoride water ([F^-]₀ = 8.0 mg/L) were 78.2%, 71.6% and 83.2% at Al₁₃ dosage of 20 mg/L, 40 mg/L and 50 mg/L. Combined with detailed investigations of the chemical compositions of flocs, along with electrospray ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (ESI-TOF-MS) analysis of residual aluminum, the defluorination mechanisms of both coagulants were discussed. In acidic conditions, both coagulants hydrolyzed and formed various Al clusters, among which transient Al (Al_ts) was the intermediate of the other clusters. The coprecipitation of high-polymerized Al and F^- contributed most of the defluorination rate. While under neutral and alkaline conditions, hydrogen bonding and ion exchange together with coprecipitation were the main roles for Al₁₃. The effects of AlCl₃ were merely physical actions, and were affected by the decreased pH. This work provides new insights into the coagulation and defluorination process.

Amphiphilic Block Copolymer of Poly(dimethylsiloxane) and Methoxypolyethylene Glycols for High-Permeable Polysulfone Membrane Preparation

Poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-methoxypolyethylene glycols (PDMS-b-mPEG) were synthesized by Steglich esterification. The high-permeable membrane (PSf/PDMS-b-mPEG) was prepared by using PDMS-b-mPEG as additives. The successful synthesis of PDMS-b-mPEG was confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images show that the distribution of finger-like macroporous and sponge-like macroporous can be modulated by controlling the ratio of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic components of additives. The distribution of additives and membrane wettability are validated with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and water contact angle test. The permeability of the blended membrane, especially for the membrane PSf/PDMS-b-mPEG1900 (M3), was remarkably improved. The water permeability of M3 (239.4 L/m²·h·bar) was 6.6 times that of the unblended membrane M0 (42.5 L/m²·h·bar). The findings of protein BSA filtration show that the flux recovery ratio of M3 is 89.2% at a BSA retention rate of about 80%, which demonstrates that the polysulfone membranes blended with PDMS-b-mPEG have excellent antifouling performance and extraordinary permeability.

A Review on Porous Polymeric Membrane Preparation. Part I: Production Techniques with Polysulfone and Poly (Vinylidene Fluoride)

Porous polymeric membranes have emerged as the core technology in the field of separation. But some challenges remain for several methods used for membrane fabrication, suggesting the need for a critical review of the literature. We present here an overview on porous polymeric membrane preparation and characterization for two commonly used polymers: polysulfone and poly (vinylidene fluoride). Five different methods for membrane fabrication are introduced: non-solvent induced phase separation, vapor-induced phase separation, electrospinning, track etching and sintering. The key factors of each method are discussed, including the solvent and non-solvent system type and composition, the polymer solution composition and concentration, the processing parameters, and the ambient conditions. To evaluate these methods, a brief description on membrane characterization is given related to morphology and performance. One objective of this review is to present the basics for selecting an appropriate method and membrane fabrication systems with appropriate processing conditions to produce membranes with the desired morphology, performance and stability, as well as to select the best methods to determine these properties.

Development of in situ synthesized Y-based nanoparticle/polyethersulfone adsorptive membranes by adjusting the composition of the coagulation bath for enhanced removal of fluoride

The composition of coagulation bath significantly altered the membrane structure, composition and adsorption performance for defluoridation by affecting the phase inversion kinetics.
