Engineering of Co3O4 electrode via Ni and Cu-doping for supercapacitor application

Although cobalt oxides show great promise as supercapacitor electrode materials, their slow kinetics and low conductivity make them unsuitable for widespread application. We developed Ni and Cu-doped Co3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) via a simple chemical co-precipitation method without the aid of a surfactant. The samples were analyzed for their composition, function group, band gap, structure/morphology, thermal property, surface area and electrochemical property using X-ray diffraction (XRD), ICP-OES, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and/or Differential thermal analysis (DTA), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), Cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. Notably, for the prepared sample, the addition of Cu to Co3O4 NPs results in a 11.5-fold increase in specific surface area (573.78 m2 g-1) and a decrease in charge transfer resistance. As a result, the Ni doped Co3O4 electrode exhibits a high specific capacitance of 749 F g-1, 1.75 times greater than the pristine Co3O4 electrode's 426 F g-1. The electrode's enhanced surface area and electronic conductivity are credited with the significant improvement in electrochemical performance. The produced Ni doped Co3O4 electrode has the potential to be employed in supercapacitor systems, as the obtained findings amply demonstrated.

Enhancing pseudocapacitive properties of cobalt oxide hierarchical nanostructures via iron doping

Through co-precipitation and post-heat processing, nanostructured Fe-doped Co₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) were developed. Using the SEM, XRD, BET, FTIR, TGA/DTA, UV-Vis, and techniques were examined. The XRD analysis presented that Co₃O₄ and Co₃O₄ nanoparticles that had been doped with 0.25 M Fe formed single cubic phase Co₃O₄ NPs with average crystallite sizes of 19.37 nm and 14.09 nm, respectively. The as prepared NPs have porous architectures via SEM analyses. The BET surface areas of Co₃O₄ and 0.25 M Fe-doped Co₃O₄ NPs were 53.06 m²/g and 351.56 m²/g, respectively. Co₃O₄ NPs have a band gap energy of 2.96 eV and an extra sub-band gap energy of 1.95 eV. Fe-doped Co₃O₄ NPs were also found to have band gap energies between 2.54 and 1.46 eV. FTIR spectroscopy was used to determine whether M-O bonds (M = Co, Fe) were present. The doping impact of iron results in the doped Co₃O₄ samples having better thermal characteristics. The highest specific capacitance was achieved using 0.25 M Fe-doped Co₃O₄ NPs at 5 mV/s, which corresponding to 588.5 F/g via CV analysis. Additionally, 0.25 M Fe-doped Co₃O₄ NPs had energy and power densities of 9.17 W h/kg and 472.1 W/kg, correspondingly.

Ag doped Co3O4 nanoparticles for high-performance supercapacitor application

Ag doped Co₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized via a co-precipitation method changing the concentration of Ag. The crystal structure, morphology, surface area, functional group, optical band gap, and thermal property were investigated by XRD, SEM, BET, FTIR, UV-Vis, and TGA/DTA techniques. The XRD results showed the formation of single-cubic Co₃O₄ nanostructured materials with an average crystal size of 19.37 nm and 12.98 nm for pristine Co₃O₄ and 0.25 M Ag-doped Co₃O₄ NPs. Morphological studies showed that pristine Co₃O₄ and 0.25 M Ag-doped Co₃O₄ NPs having a porous structure with small spherical grains, porous structures with sponge-like structures, and loosely packed porous structures, respectively. The pristine and 0.25 M Ag-doped Co₃O₄ NPs showed BET surface areas of 53.06 m²/g, and 407.33 m²/g, respectively. The band gap energy of Co₃O₄ NPs were 2.96 eV, with additional sub-bandgap energy of 1.95 eV. Additionally, it was discovered that the band gap energies of 0.25 M Ag-doped Co₃O₄ NPs ranged from 2.2 to 2.75 eV, with an extra sub-band with energies ranging from 1.43 to 1.94 eV for all as-prepared samples. The Ag-doped Co₃O₄ as prepared samples show improved thermal properties due to the doping effect of silver. The CV test confirmed that the 0.25 M Ag-doped Co₃O₄ NPs exhibited the highest specific capacitance value of 992.7 F/g at 5 mV/s in a 0.1 M KOH electrolyte solution. The energy density and power density of 0.25 M Ag-doped Co₃O₄ NPs were 27.9 W h/kg and 3816.1 W/kg, respectively.

The self-powered electrochemical biosensing platform with multi-amplification strategy for ultrasensitive detection of microRNA-155

A self-powered biosensor (SPB) was constructed for the ultra-sensitive detection of microRNA-155 (miR-155) by combining a capacitor/enzymatic biofuel cell (EBFC), a strategy of rolling circle amplification (RCA) and a digital multimeter (DMM). The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the assembled EBFC-SPB can reach 15.85 μA/pM with the action of matching capacitor, which is 513% of that without capacitor (3.09 μA/pM). This achieves the first signal amplification. Furthermore, when the target miR-155 triggers RCA, electrons are continuous generated and flow to the biocathode through the external circuit to catalyze the reduction of oxygen and release [Ru(NH₃)₆]³⁺ electron acceptor. This achieves the second signal amplification. Finally, DMM is used to convert the signal into instantaneous current and amplify it for real-time reading. This achieves the third signal amplification. Therefore, the limit of detection (LOD) of the developed biosensor is as low as 0.17 fM (S/N = 3), and the linear range is between 0.5 fM and 10,000 fM, indicating that the EBFC-SPB has a broad application prospect for cancer marker of miR-155 with ultrasensitive detection.

MnCo2O4/Ni3S4 nanocomposite for hybrid supercapacitor with superior energy density and long-term cycling stability

MnCo₂O₄ is regarded as a good electrode material for supercapacitor due to its high specific capacity and good structural stability. However, its poor electrical conductivity limits its wide-range applications. To solve this issue, we integrated the MnCo₂O₄ with Ni₃S₄, which has a good electrical conductivity, and synthesized a MnCo₂O₄/Ni₃S₄ nanocomposite using a two-step hydrothermal process. Comparing with individual MnCo₂O₄ and Ni₃S₄, the MnCo₂O₄/Ni₃S₄ nanocomposite showed a higher specific capacity and a better cycling stability as the electrode for the supercapacitor. The specific capacity value of the MnCo₂O₄/Ni₃S₄ electrode was 904.7 C g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 with a potential window of 0-0.55 V. A hybrid supercapacitor (HSC), assembled using MnCo₂O₄/Ni₃S₄ and active carbon as the cathode and anode, respectively, showed a capacitance of 116.4 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1, and a high energy density of 50.7 Wh kg^-1 at 405.8 W kg^-1. Long-term electrochemical stability tests showed an obvious increase of the HSC's capacitance after 5500 charge/discharge cycles, reached a maximum value of ∼162.7% of its initial value after 25,000 cycles, and then remained a stable value up to 64,000 cycles. Simultaneously, its energy density was increased to 54.2 Wh kg^-1 at 380.3 W kg^-1 after 64,000 cycles.

Enhanced electrochemical performance of MnNi2O4/rGO nanocomposite as pseudocapacitor electrode material and methanol electro-oxidation catalyst

Binary transition metal oxides with encouraging electrocatalyst properties have been suggested as electrode materials for supercapacitors and methanol oxidation. Hence, in this work, a binary mixed metal oxide based on nickel and manganese (MnNi₂O₄) and its hybrid with reduced graphene oxide were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method. After physical and morphological characterization, the potential of these nanostructures was investigated for use as supercapacitor electrodes and methanol electro-oxidation. The results of the electrochemical analysis showed a substantial effect of adding rGO to the MnNi₂O₄. The MnNi₂O₄/rGO hybrid electrode supercapacitor exhibited good stability of 93% after 2000 consecutive CV cycles and a specific capacitance of 575 F g^-1at the current density of 0.5 A g^-1. Furthermore, the application of this hybrid nanomaterial in the methanol electro-oxidation reaction (MOR) indicated its appropriate electrochemical efficiency and stability in methanol oxidation. Our results show that MnNi₂O₄/rGO can be considered as a promising electrode material for energy applications.

Transition Metal Oxide Electrode Materials for Supercapacitors: A Review of Recent Developments

In the past decades, the energy consumption of nonrenewable fossil fuels has been increasing, which severely threatens human life. Thus, it is very urgent to develop renewable and reliable energy storage devices with features of environmental harmlessness and low cost. High power density, excellent cycle stability, and a fast charge/discharge process make supercapacitors a promising energy device. However, the energy density of supercapacitors is still less than that of ordinary batteries. As is known to all, the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors is largely dependent on electrode materials. In this review, we firstly introduced six typical transition metal oxides (TMOs) for supercapacitor electrodes, including RuO₂, Co₃O₄, MnO₂, ZnO, XCo₂O₄ (X = Mn, Cu, Ni), and AMoO₄ (A = Co, Mn, Ni, Zn). Secondly, the problems of these TMOs in practical application are presented and the corresponding feasible solutions are clarified. Then, we summarize the latest developments of the six TMOs for supercapacitor electrodes. Finally, we discuss the developing trend of supercapacitors and give some recommendations for the future of supercapacitors.

Reduced graphene/nanostructured cobalt oxide nanocomposite for enhanced electrochemical performance of supercapacitor applications

We demonstrate the preparation of nanostructures cobalt oxide/reduced graphene oxide (Co₃O₄/rGO) nanocomposites by a simple one-step cost-effective hydrothermal technique for possible electrode materials in supercapacitor application. The X-ray diffraction patterns were employed to confirm the nanocomposite crystal system of Co₃O₄/rGO by demonstrating the existence of normal cubic spinel structure of Co₃O₄ in the matrix of Co₃O₄/rGO nanocomposite. FTIR and FT-Raman studies manifested the structural behaviour and quality of prepared Co₃O₄/rGO nanocomposite. The optical properties of the nanocomposite Co₃O₄/rGO have been investigated by UV absorption spectra. The SEM/TEM images showed that the Co₃O₄ nanoparticles in the Co₃O₄/rGO nanocomposites were covered over the surface of the rGO sheets. The electrical properties were analyzed in terms of real and imaginary permittivity, dielectric loss and AC conductivity. The electrocatalytic activities of synthesized Co₃O₄/rGO nanocomposites were determined by cyclic voltammetry and charge-discharge cycle to evaluate the supercapacitive performance. The specific capacitance of 754 Fg^-1 was recorded for Co₃O₄/rGO nanocomposite based electrode in three electrode cell system. The electrode material exhibited an acceptable capability and excellent long-term cyclic stability by maintaining 96% after 1000 continuous cycles. These results showed that the prepared sample could be an ideal candidate for high-energy application as electrode materials. The synthesized Co₃O₄/rGO nanocomposite is a versatile material and can be used in various application such as fuel cells, electrochemical sensors, gas sensors, solar cells, and photocatalysis.
