Surface roughness regulation of reduced-graphene oxide/iodine - Based electrodes and their application in polymer solar cells

Modification of Graphene Oxide/V2O5·nH2O Nanocomposite Films via Direct Laser Irradiation

Herein, photothermal modification of nanocomposite films consisting of hydrated vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅·nH₂O) nanoribbons wrapped with graphene oxide (GO) flakes was performed via 405 nm direct laser irradiation. The combination of X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy allowed comprehensive characterization of physical and chemical changes of GO/V₂O₅·nH₂O nanocomposite films upon photothermal modification. The modified nanocomposite films exhibited porous surface morphology (17.27 m² g^-1) consisting of randomly distributed pillarlike protrusions. The photothermal modification process of GO/V₂O₅·nH₂O enhanced the electrical conductivity of nanocomposite from 1.6 to 6.8 S/m. It was also determined that the direct laser irradiation of GO/V₂O₅·nH₂O resulted in considerable decrease of C-O bounds as well as O-H functional groups with an increase of the laser power density.

Chemical Changes of Graphene Oxide Thin Films Induced by Thermal Treatment under Vacuum Conditions

Reduction of graphene oxide is one of the most promising strategies for obtaining bulk quantities of graphene-like materials. In this study, graphene oxide was deposited on SiO2 and reduced by annealing at 500 K under vacuum conditions (5 × 10−1 Pa). Here, graphene oxide films as well as their chemical changes upon heating were characterized in depth by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron and atomic force microscopies. From the chemical point of view, the as prepared graphene oxide films presented a large quantity of oxidized functional groups that were reduced to a large extent upon heating. Moreover, residual oxidized sulfur species that originated during the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) were almost completely removed by heating while nitrogen traces were integrated into the carbon framework. On the other hand, regarding structural considerations, reduced graphene oxide films showed more homogeneity and lower roughness than graphene oxide films.

Current Trends in the Optical Characterization of Two-Dimensional Carbon Nanomaterials

Graphene and graphene-related materials have received great attention because of their outstanding properties like Young's modulus, chemical inertness, high electrical and thermal conductivity, or large mobility. To utilize two-dimensional (2D) materials in any practical application, an excellent characterization of the nanomaterials is needed as such dimensions, even small variations in size, or composition, are accompanied by drastic changes in the material properties. Simultaneously, it is sophisticated to perform characterizations at such small dimensions. This review highlights the wide range of different characterization methods for the 2D materials, mainly attributing carbon-based materials as they are by far the ones most often used today. The strengths as well as the limitations of the individual methods, ranging from light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy (conductive), atomic force microscopy, scanning electrochemical microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, UV-vis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy to dynamic light scattering, are discussed. By using these methods, the flake size and shape, the number of layers, the conductivity, the morphology, the number and type of defects, the chemical composition, and the colloidal properties of the 2D materials can be investigated.
