Multifunctional spiky branched gold-silver nanostars with near-infrared and short-wavelength infrared localized surface plasmon resonances

Reliable detection of malachite green by self-assembled SERS substrates based on gold-silicon heterogeneous nano pineapple structures

Morphology regulation of heterodimer nanoparticles and the use of their asymmetric features for further practical applications are crucial because of the rich optical properties and various combinations of heterodimers. This work used silicon to asymmetrically wrap half of a gold sphere and grew gold branches on the bare gold surface to form heterogeneous nano pineapples (NPPs) which can effectively improve Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties through chemical enhancement and lightning-rod effect respectively. The asymmetric structures of NPPs enabled them to self-assemble into the monolayer membrane with consistent branch orientation. The prepared substrate had high homogeneity and better SERS ability than disorganized substrates, and achieved reliable detection of malachite green (MG) in clams with a detection limit of 7.8 × 10-11 M. This work provided a guide to further revise the morphology of heterodimers and a new idea for the use of asymmetric dimers for practically photochemical and biomedical sensing.

Helical au nanostructure for SERS detection of hazardous molecular and chiral enantiomers

In recent years, incidents of pesticide pollution and abuse of feed additives have occurred frequently, which pose a great threat to human health. Raman spectroscopy has become an important method in the field of food safety due to its rapidity, simplicity and sensitivity. It is important to obtain complex structure to promote surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) effect. In this study, gold helical nanoparticles with rich surface structure were synthesized using cysteine as induce agent. Notably, the complex helical structure and tip led to an excellent electromagnetic enhancement property. The helical structure showed ultra-sensitive detection of hazardous molecular, such as thiram and ractopamine. Interestingly, the D/L-Au structure had significant chiral optical activity and could be used as an unlabeled SERS platform for enantiomer identification. This study provided an effective strategy for the detection of pesticides and feed additives, which could be applied in other aspects of food safety in the future.

Recent Advancements and Unexplored Biomedical Applications of Green Synthesized Ag and Au Nanoparticles: A Review

Green synthesis of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) has acquired huge popularity owing to their potential applications in various fields. A large number of research articles exist in the literature describing the green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs for biomedical applications. However, these findings are scattered, making it time-consuming for researchers to locate promising advancements in Ag and Au NPs synthesis and their unexplored biomedical applications. Unlike other review articles, this systematic study not only highlights recent advancements in the green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs but also explores their potential unexplored biomedical applications. The article discusses the various synthesis approaches for the green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs highlighting the emerging developments and novel strategies. Then, the article reviews the important biomedical applications of green synthesized Ag and Au NPs by critically evaluating the expected advantages. To expose future research direction in the field, the article describes the unexplored biomedical applications of the NPs. Finally, the articles discuss the challenges and limitations in the green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs and their biomedical applications. This article will serve as a valuable reference for researchers, working on green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs for biomedical applications.

Ultrasensitive Cd2+ detection based on biomimetic magneto-Au nano-urchin SERS chip fabricated using a 3D printed magnetic mold

Cadmium is a representative carcinogenic heavy metal. Because of the long biological half-life of cadmium, it is critical to prevent and detect cadmium inflow into the body. In this study, we developed the biomimetic magneto-gold nano-urchin (MGNU)-based surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) chip for ultrasensitive detection of cadmium. The MGNU SERS chip was facilely fabricated using three-dimensional (3D) printed magnetic molds. The 3D printed magnetic molds were designed for contributing to (1) making hydrophobic/hydrophilic areas and (2) magnetic SERS enhancement by attracting the MGNUs. To validate the performance of the MGNU SERS chip, we conducted electromagnetic simulations and measurements of SERS efficiencies. Consequently, we detected cadmium ions up to 1.33 pM in distilled water. Moreover, we succeeded to detect cadmium ions in the real environmental samples up to 2.76 pM in the tap water and 14.21 pM in the human blood plasma, respectively. The MGNU SERS chip is a powerful SERS substrate that can be used in various spectrometer-based sensing platforms.

Synthetic Principles of Spiky Au Nanoparticles

In this work, the synthetic principles of spiky Au nanoparticles (spiky Au NPs) with an average number of spikes of less than or equal to six and controlled core sizes by using Au nanorods as seeds (Au-NR seeds) are summarized on the basis of the results of a series of control experiments. In addition, one empirical equation that can roughly estimate the number of spiky Au NPs is proposed, demonstrated by the results of the products prepared from different aspect ratios of Au-NRs as seeds and non-Au-NR seeds. Moreover, the synthetic principles of spiky Au NPs are further demonstrated by taking the successful synthesis of a serials of spiky Au21×7 NPs. Furthermore, the as-prepared spiky Au@Au11.8Pd88.2 NPs with ultrathin AuPd shells, which are derived from spiky Au21×7 NPs with the smallest cores, can bear excellent catalytic activity (say, E1/2 = 0.947 V) and durability toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline conditions, compared with commercial Pt/C catalysts (E1/2 = 0.883 V).

Highly efficient photothermal branched Au-Ag nanoparticles containing procyanidins for synergistic antibacterial and anti-inflammatory immunotherapy

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease caused by bacterial infection. Excessive immune response and high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) further lead to the irreversible destruction of surrounding tissues. Developing new antimicrobial materials that regulate the immune system to resist inflammation can effectively treat periodontal inflammation. A nanoplatform integrating Ag⁺, photothermal therapy (PTT), and procyanidins (PC) for precision antibacterial and synergistic immunotherapy for periodontitis was proposed. This work loaded PC into AuAg nanoparticles, and the resulting nanocomposite was named AuAg-PC. PTT can effectively remove pathogenic bacteria, but high temperatures can cause tissue damage. Ag⁺ contributes to the preparation of a nanoparticle branched structure that improves the photothermal efficiency and helps PTT achieve an excellent antibacterial effect and avoid periodontal tissue damage. PC regulates host immunity by eliminating intracellular ROS, inhibiting inflammatory factors, and regulating macrophage polarisation in periodontal disease sites. It enhances the host's resistance to bacterial inflammation. AuAg-PC exerted an excellent anti-inflammatory effect and promoted tissue repair in animal periodontal inflammation models. Hence, AuAg-PC significantly combats periodontal pathogens and shows great application potential in the photothermal-assisted immunotherapy of periodontitis. This design provided a new controllable and efficient treatment platform for controlling persistent inflammation infection and regulating immunity.

Long Spiky Au-Ag Nanostar Based Fiber Probe for Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

The detection performances of noble metal-based surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) devices are determined by the compositions and geometries of the metal nanostructures, as well as the substrates. In the current study, long spiky Au-Ag alloy nanostars were synthesized, and both core diameters and spike lengths were controlled by Lauryl sulfobetaine concentrations (as the nanostructure growth skeleton). The long spiky star geometries were confirmed by transmission electron micrograph images. Elements energy dispersive spectrometer mapping confirmed that Au and Ag elements were inhomogeneously distributed in the nanostructures and demonstrated a higher Ag content at surface for potential better SERS performance. Selected synthesized spiky nanostars were uniformly assembled on multi-mode silica fiber for probe fabrication by silanization. The SERS performance were characterized using crystal violet (CV) and rhodamine 6G (R6G) as analyte molecules. The lowest detection limit could reach as low as 10^-8 M, with a 6.23 × 10⁶ enhancement factor, and the relationship between analyte concentrations and Raman intensities was linear for both CV and R6G, which indicated the potential qualitative and quantitative molecule detection applications. Moreover, the fiber probes also showed good reproducibility and stability in the ambient atmosphere.

Surface Imprinted Layer of Cypermethrin upon Au Nanoparticle as a Specific and Selective Coating for the Detection of Template Pesticide Molecules

The detection of specific pesticides on food products is essential as these substances pose health risks due to their toxicity. The use of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) takes advantage of the straightforward technique to obtain fingerprint spectra of target analytes. In this study, SERS-active substrates are made using Au nanoparticles (NPs) coated with a layer of polymer and followed by imprinting with a pesticide–Cypermethrin, as a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP). Cypermethrin was eventually removed and formed as template cavities, then denoted as Au NP/MIP, to capture the analogous molecules. The captured molecules situated in-between the areas of high electromagnetic field formed by plasmonic Au NPs result in an effect of SERS. The formation of Au NP/MIP was, respectively, studied through morphological analysis using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and compositional analysis using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Two relatively similar pesticides, Cypermethrin and Permethrin, were used as analytes. The results showed that Au NP/MIP was competent to detect both similar molecules despite the imprint being made only by Cypermethrin. Nevertheless, Au NP/MIP has a limited number of imprinted cavities that result in sensing only low concentrations of a pesticide solution. Au NP/MIP is thus a specific design for detecting analogous molecules similar to its template structure.

Silver Nanoparticles for Water Pollution Monitoring and Treatments: Ecosafety Challenge and Cellulose-Based Hybrids Solution

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are widely used as engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in many advanced nanotechnologies, due to their versatile, easy and cheap preparations combined with peculiar chemical-physical properties. Their increased production and integration in environmental applications including water treatment raise concerns for their impact on humans and the environment. An eco-design strategy that makes it possible to combine the best material performances with no risk for the natural ecosystems and living beings has been recently proposed. This review envisages potential hybrid solutions of AgNPs for water pollution monitoring and remediation to satisfy their successful, environmentally safe (ecosafe) application. Being extremely efficient in pollutants sensing and degradation, their ecosafe application can be achieved in combination with polymeric-based materials, especially with cellulose, by following an eco-design approach. In fact, (AgNPs)-cellulose hybrids have the double advantage of being easily produced using recycled material, with low costs and possible reuse, and of being ecosafe, if properly designed. An updated view of the use and prospects of these advanced hybrids AgNP-based materials is provided, which will surely speed their environmental application with consequent significant economic and environmental impact.

Ag Nanostructures with Spikes on Adhesive Tape as a Flexible Sers-Active Substrate for In Situ Trace Detection of Pesticides on Fruit Skin

Nanostructures with spikes (NSPs) have been a subject of several surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) applications owing to their significant Raman signal enhancement brought about by the combined effects of interspike coupling and the accumulated induction on the tips of spikes. Thus, NSPs offer great potential as a SERS-active substrate for relevant applications that require a high density of enhanced “hot spots”. In this study, Ag NSPs were synthesized in varying degrees of agglomeration and were thereafter deposited onto a transparent adhesive tape as a flexible substrate for SERS applications, specifically, in the detection of trace amounts of pesticides. These flexible substrates were referred to as Ag NSPs/tape and optimized with an enhancement factor (EF) of ca. 1.7 × 10⁷. A strong resulting signal enhancement could be attributed to an optimal degree of agglomeration and, consequently, the distances among/between spikes. Long spikes on the synthesized core of Ag NSPs tend to be loosely spaced, which are suitable in detecting relatively large molecules that could access the spaces among the spikes where “hot spots” are generally formed. Since one side of the transparent tape is adhesive, the paste-and-peel off method was successful in obtaining phosmet and carbaryl residues from apple peels as reflected in the acquired SERS spectra. In situ trace detection of the pesticides at low concentrations down to 10⁻⁷ M could be demonstrated. In situ trace detection of mixed pesticides was possible as the characteristic peaks of both pesticides were observed in equimolar mixtures of the analytes at 10⁻² to 10⁻⁴ M. This study is, thus, premised upon applying for in situ trace detection on e.g., fruit skin.
