Exploration of the adsorption performance and mechanism of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@graphene oxide for Pb(II) and 1-naphthylamine from aqueous solution

Recent advancements in modifications of metal-organic frameworks-based materials for enhanced water purification and contaminant detection

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a key focus in water treatment and monitoring due to their unique structural features, including extensive surface area, customizable porosity, reversible adsorption, and high catalytic efficiency. While numerous reviews have discussed MOFs in environmental remediation, this review specifically addresses recent advancements in modifying MOFs to enhance their effectiveness in water purification and monitoring. It underscores their roles as adsorbents, photocatalysts, and in luminescent and electrochemical sensing. Advancements such as pore modification, defect engineering, and functionalization, combined synergistically with advanced materials, have led to the development of recyclable MOF-based nano-adsorbents, Z-scheme photocatalytic systems, nanocomposites, and hybrid materials. These innovations have broadened the spectrum of removable contaminants and improved material recyclability. Additionally, this review delves into the creation of multifunctional MOF materials, the development of robust MOF variants, and the simplification of synthesis methods, marking significant progress in MOF sensor technology. Furthermore, the review addresses current challenges in this field and proposes potential future research directions and practical applications. The growing research interest in MOFs underscores the need for an updated synthesis of knowledge in this area, focusing on both current challenges and future opportunities in water remediation.

Polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan quaternary ammonium salt composite hydrogel with directional macroporous structure for photothermal synergistic antibacterial and wound healing promotion

After skin tissue trauma, wound infections caused by bacteria posed a great threat to skin repair. However, resistance to antibiotics, the current treatment of choice for bacterial infections, greatly affected the efficiency of anti-infection and wound healing. Therefore, there has been a critical need for the development of novel antimicrobial materials and advanced therapeutic methods to aid in skin repair. In this paper, rGO-PDA@ZIF-8 nanofillers were prepared by coating graphene oxide (GO) with dopamine (DA), followed by in situ growth of zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). Using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan quaternary ammonium salt (CS) as matrix materials, along with polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a pore-forming agent, and rGO-PDA@ZIF-8 as an antimicrobial nano-filler, we successfully prepared rGO-PDA@ZIF-8/PVA/CS composite hydrogels with a directional macroporous structure using bidirectional freezing method and phase separation technique. This hydrogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties, good solubility and water retention capabilities. In addition, the hydrogel demonstrated excellent biocompatibility. Most notably, it not only exhibited excellent bactericidal effect against E. coli and S. aureus (99.1 % and 99.0 %, respectively) under the synergistic effect of intrinsic antibacterial activity and photothermal antibacterial, but also exhibited the ability to promote wound healing, making it a promising candidate for wound healing applications.

Heavy metal sequestration from wastewater by metal-organic frameworks: a state-of-the-art review of recent progress

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as highly promising adsorbents for removing heavy metals from wastewater due to their tunable structures, high surface areas, and exceptional adsorption capacities. This review meticulously examines and summarizes recent advancements in producing and utilizing MOF-based adsorbents for sequestering heavy metal ions from water. It begins by outlining and contrasting commonly employed methods for synthesizing MOFs, such as solvothermal, microwave, electrochemical, ultrasonic, and mechanochemical. Rather than delving into the specifics of adsorption process parameters, the focus shifts to analyzing the adsorption capabilities and underlying mechanisms against critical metal(loid) ions like chromium, arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury under various environmental conditions. Additionally, this article discusses strategies to optimize MOF performance, scale-up production, and address environmental implications. The comprehensive review aims to enhance the understanding of MOF-based adsorption for heavy metal remediation and stimulate further research in this critical field. In brief, this review article presents a comprehensive overview of the contemporary information on MOFs as an effective adsorbent and the challenges being faced by these adsorbents for heavy metal mitigation (including stability, cost, environmental issues, and optimization), targeting to develop a vital reference for future MOF research.

Controlled synthesis of Fe3O4/MnO2 (3 1 0)/ZIF-67 composite with enhanced synergetic effects for the highly selective and efficient adsorption of Cu (II) from simulated copperplating effluents

This study designed a composite material with internal synergistic effects among multiple components to achieve highly selective adsorption of Cu (II). Through controlled synthesis, the Fe3O4/MnO2(3 1 0)/ZIF-67 composite was successfully fabricated, leading to significant improvement in adsorption selectivity, capacity, and adsorption rate. The experimental results showed that the composite is of outstanding selectivity in the adsorption of Cu (II), with a partition coefficient K of Cu (II) that was 2.2-5.3 times higher than that of other coexisting ions. Moreover, the composite exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity of 1261.0 mg g-1 and a fast adsorption rate of 840.7 mg g-1 h-1 at 298 K. Additionally, its magnetic property facilitated easy separation from wastewater, thereby enhancing its potential for commercial applications. The synergetic effect mechanism was analyzed through characterizations and DFT calculations. Furthermore, the recyclability of the composite was investigated, which showed that after seven cycles, the adsorption efficiency remained at 85% of its initial efficiency. It can be concluded that Fe3O4/MnO2(3 1 0)/ZIF-67 has potential to address challenges posed by heavy metal pollution in copperplating effluents.

Screening of MnO2 with desired facet and its behavior in highly selective adsorption of aqueous Pb (II): Theoretical and experimental studies

In this study, Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and experimental methods were used to evaluate MnO₂ with 5 different facets for their selective adsorption of Pb (II) from wastewater containing Cd (II), Cu (II), Pb (II), and Zn (II). The DFT calculations were used to screen the selective adsorption capability of the facets and demonstrated that the MnO₂ (3 1 0) facet has an excellent performance in selective adsorption of Pb (II) among all facets. The validity of DFT calculations was verified by comparing with the experimental results. MnO₂ with different facets was prepared in a controlled manner and the characterizations confirmed that the lattice indices of the fabricated MnO₂ have the desired facets. Adsorption performance experiments illustrated a high adsorption capacity (320.0 mg/g) on the (3 1 0) facet MnO₂. The selectivity of adsorption of Pb (II) was 3-32 times greater than that of the other coexisting ions, i.e., Cd (II), Cu (II), and Zn (II)), which is consistent with results of the DFT calculations. Furthermore, DFT calculations of the adsorption energy, charge density difference, and projected density of states (PDOS) showed that the adsorption of Pb (II) on the MnO₂ (3 1 0) facet is non-activated chemisorption. This study shows that it is feasible to use DFT calculations to quickly screen suitable adsorbents for environmental applications.

Aqueous Pb(II) Removal Using ZIF-60: Adsorption Studies, Response Surface Methodology and Machine Learning Predictions

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are increasingly gaining attention in many application fields due to their outstanding porosity and thermal stability, among other exceptional characteristics. However, in the domain of water purification via adsorption, scientists have mainly focused on ZIF-8 and, to a lesser extent, ZIF-67. The performance of other ZIFs as water decontaminants is yet to be explored. Hence, this study applied ZIF-60 for the removal of lead from aqueous solutions; this is the first time ZIF-60 has been used in any water treatment adsorption study. The synthesized ZIF-60 was subjected to characterization using FTIR, XRD and TGA. A multivariate approach was used to investigate the effect of adsorption parameters on lead removal and the findings revealed that ZIF-60 dose and lead concentration are the most significant factors affecting the response (i.e., lead removal efficiency). Further, response surface methodology-based regression models were generated. To further explore the adsorption performance of ZIF-60 in removing lead from contaminated water samples, adsorption kinetics, isotherm and thermodynamic investigations were conducted. The findings revealed that the obtained data were well-fitted by the Avrami and pseudo-first-order kinetic models, suggesting that the process is complex. The maximum adsorption capacity (q_max) was predicted to be 1905 mg/g. Thermodynamic studies revealed an endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process. Finally, the experimental data were aggregated and used for machine learning predictions using several algorithms. The model generated by the random forest algorithm proved to be the most effective on the basis of its significant correlation coefficient and minimal root mean square error (RMSE).

Metal-organic frameworks for food contaminant adsorption and detection

Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have been widely used in food contamination adsorption and detection due to their large specific surface area, specific pore structure and flexible post-modification. MOFs with specific pore size can be targeted for selective adsorption of some contaminants and can be used as pretreatment and pre-concentration steps to purify samples and enrich target analytes for food contamination detection to improve the detection efficiency. In addition, MOFs, as a new functional material, play an important role in developing new rapid detection methods that are simple, portable, inexpensive and with high sensitivity and accuracy. The aim of this paper is to summarize the latest and insightful research results on MOFs for the adsorption and detection of food contaminants. By summarizing Zn-based, Cu-based and Zr-based MOFs with low cost, easily available raw materials and convenient synthesis conditions, we describe their principles and discuss their applications in chemical and biological contaminant adsorption and sensing detection in terms of stability, adsorption capacity and sensitivity. Finally, we present the limitations and challenges of MOFs in food detection, hoping to provide some ideas for future development.

Chitosan grafted tetracarboxylic functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for removal of Pb(II) from an aqueous environment

In this study, the chitosan-grafted tetracarboxylic functionalized magnetic nanoparticle (Fe₃O₄@TCA@CS) was synthesized via in situ co-precipitation process and amidation reaction to improve efficiency of adsorption process and obtain cost-effective adsorbents for removal of toxic Pb(II) metal from aqueous environment. The Fe₃O₄@TCA@CS nanocomposite was analyzed by FTIR, TEM-EDX, TGA, XRD, BET, and Zeta potential. The performance of Fe₃O₄@TCA@CS for Pb(II) ions adsorption was achieved as a function of pH, dose, contact time, initial Pb(II) concentration, and temperature. The influence of coexisting ions such as Na⁺, Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, and Cd²⁺on removal efficiency of Pb(II) was also investigated. The results revealed that the coexisting ions had little influence on Pb(II) removal efficiency. The pseudo-first-order and Freundlich models were better to describe the adsorption of Pb(II) onto Fe₃O₄@TCA@CS and the maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) was 204.92 mg/g at pH:5.5; adsorbent dose: 0.015 g; and temperature: 298 K. Thermodynamic studies revealed that the Pb(II) adsorption onto Fe₃O₄@TCA@CS was an exothermic process. In conclusion, the study provides a new, simple, low-cost, and effective chitosan-based magnetic nanocomposite as a promising adsorbent with excellent adsorption capacity, magnetic separation, and reusability for Pb(II) removal from an aqueous environment.

ZIF-8 metal organic framework materials as a superb platform for the removal and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are attracting significant attention for applications including adsorption, chemical sensing, gas separation, photocatalysis, electrocatalysis and catalysis. In particular, zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8), which is composed of zinc ions and imidazolate ligands, have been applied in different areas of catalysis due to its outstanding structural and textural properties. It possesses a highly porous structure and chemical and thermal stability under varying reaction conditions. When used alone in the reaction medium, the ZIF-8 particles tend to agglomerate, which inhibits their removal efficiency and selectivity. This results in their mediocre reusability and separation from aqueous conditions. Thus, to overcome these drawbacks, several well-designed ZIF-8 structures have emerged by forming composites and heterostructures and doping. This review focuses on the recent advances on the use of ZIF-8 structures (doping, composites, heterostructures, etc.) in the removal and photodegradation of persistent organic pollutants. We focus on the adsorption and photocatalysis of three main organic pollutants (methylene blue, rhodamine B, and malachite green). Finally, the key challenges, prospects and future directions are outlined to give insights into game-changing breakthroughs in this area.

Synthesis of ferroferric oxide@silicon dioxide/cobalt-based zeolitic imidazole frameworks for the removal of doxorubicin hydrochloride from wastewater

Due to its low-cost, eco-friendliness and easy mode of separation biosynthesized magnetic ferroferric oxide (Fe₃O₄) can be successfully used for the removal of organic contaminants from wastewater. However, there are some challenges that to date have limited this compound's practical removal efficiency. Thus, in this study, a cobalt-based zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIF-67) coated biosynthesized ferroferric oxide@silicon dioxide (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂) magnetic composite (Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/ZIF-67) was prepared to address these issues and subsequently used to remove doxorubicin hydrochloride (DOX). Characterization results showed that the fabricated composite exhibited significant magnetic properties (16.1 emu·g^-1) with a size ranging between 50 and 250 nm. The amount of DOX adsorbed by the composite (90.7 mg·g^-1) was much higher than either of the component parts, which were only 35.7 and 82.5 mg·g^-1 for Fe₃O₄@SiO₂ and ZIF-67 respectively. This indicated enhanced DOX adsorption by Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/ZIF-67. The DOX adsorption best fit a pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir adsorption model. These studies suggested that the DOX adsorption mechanism involved a combination of electrostatic interactions, π-π stacking, hydrogen bonding and pore filling. Regeneration and application studies, exposing Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/ZIF-67 to real water samples, practically demonstrated that Fe₃O₄@SiO₂/ZIF-67 with propensity for magnetic separation and recycle is a promising nanomaterial for DOX removal.

In Situ Growth of Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-L in Macroporous PVA/CMC/PEG Composite Hydrogels with Synergistic Antibacterial and Rapid Hemostatic Functions for Wound Dressing

Although many advances have been made in medicine, traumatic bleeding and wound infection are two of the most serious threats to human health. To achieve rapid hemostasis and prevent infection by pathogenic microbes, the development of new hemostatic and antibacterial materials has recently gained significant attention. In this paper, safe, non-toxic, and biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA); carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which contains several carboxyl and hydroxyl groups; and polyethylene glycol (PEG), which functions as a pore-forming agent, were used to prepare a novel PVA/CMC/PEG-based composite hydrogel with a macroporous structure by the freeze-thaw method and the phase separation technique. In addition, a PVA/CMC/PEG@ZIF-L composite hydrogel was prepared by the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-L (ZIF-L). ZIF-L grown in situ on hydrogels released Zn²⁺ and imidazolyl groups. They elicited a synergistic antibacterial effect in hemostasis with PVA and CMC, rendering the PVA/CMC/PEG@ZIF-L hydrogel with a good antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus. At the same time, the macroporous structure enabled the rapid release of Zn²⁺ and imidazolyl groups in ZIF-L and promoted cell proliferation at an early stage, enhancing the coagulation efficiency. A rat liver injury model was used to confirm its rapid hemostasis capacity.

Functionalized porous nanoscale Fe3O4 particles supported biochar from peanut shell for Pb(II) ions removal from landscape wastewater

The large amounts ofheavy metal from landscape wastewater have become serious problems of environmental pollution and risks for human health. The development of efficient novel adsorbent is a very important for treatment of heavy metal. The functionalized porous nanoscale Fe₃O₄ particles supported biochar from peanut shell (PS-Fe₃O₄) for removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous solution was investigated. The characterization of PS-Fe₃O₄ composites showed that biochar was successfully coated with porous nanoscale Fe₃O₄ particles. The pseudo second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model were more fitted for describing the adsorption process of Pb(II) ions in solution. The adsorption process of Pb(II) ions removal by PS-Fe₃O₄ composites was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The adsorption mechanisms of Pb(II) ions by PS-Fe₃O₄ composites were mainly controlled by the chemical adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(II) ions removal in solution by PS-Fe₃O₄ composites reached 188.68 mg/g. The removal mechanism included Fe-O coordination reaction, co-precipitation, complexation reaction, and ion exchange. PS-Fe₃O₄ composites were thought as a low-cost, good regeneration performance, and high efficiency adsorption material for removal of Pb(II) ions in solution.

In situ growth of ZIF-8 on carboxymethyl chitosan beads for improved adsorption of lead ion from aqueous solutions

In this study, a method for the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on carboxymethyl chitosan beads (BCMC) to produce a composite adsorbent (BCMC@ZIF-8) for the removal of Pb²⁺ from water is proposed. The results revealed that the utilization of the BCMC as a framework enhanced the stability of ZIF-8, and the presence of the latter in the composite improved the removal efficiency of Pb²⁺ from water. Data from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and adsorption kinetics revealed that the adsorption mechanism included diffusion and the sharing/transfer of electrons between BCMC@ZIF-8 and Pb²⁺. The maximum adsorption capacity of BCMC@ZIF-8 fitted using the Langmuir model was 566.09 mg/g. Results of the experiments on the regeneration of the adsorbent and its stability in water further indicated that BCMC improved the stability of ZIF-8. This study demonstrated that the stability of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, which exhibited high efficiencies for the removal of heavy metals in water can be improved through fixation of the polymer skeleton. Thus, the present study offers practical and theoretical guidance for the application of MOF materials in water treatment.

Mechanistic insight into the removal of aqueous Cd using an immobilized ZIF-8 and microflora cooperative composite

Biotechnology and metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) materials have been investigated intensively for the removal of heavy metal from wastewater. However, the cooperative effect of bacteria and MOFs on heavy metal adsorption was less reported. Considering this, this study has screened out microflora with cadmium (Cd) adsorption ability. Furthermore, it was combined with zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) to form a ZIF-8 and microflora complex (ZMC). Moreover, ZMC was further immobilized to improve its Cd adsorption effect and reusability. Results revealed that the immobilized ZMC exhibited 99.91% and 78.83% Cd adsorption rate for 20 mg L^-1 and 300 mg L^-1 Cd, respectively. Meanwhile, the immobilized ZMC maintained a relatively stable adsorption effect under varied external pH. The reaction mechanism was summarized as covalent binding accompanied with a small amount of electrostatic attraction. Microflora could enhance the surface electronegativity of ZIF-8. ZIF-8 could strengthen the response of antioxidant activity of microflora and augmented the affinity of microflora secretions for Cd. This proposed method may provide a new insight for the removal of heavy metal contaminants in water.

Efficient removal of tetracycline by a hierarchically porous ZIF-8 metal organic framework

Most reported metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have microporous structures and defective active sites, limiting their practical application to macromolecular substances. A hierarchical porous zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) was prepared using poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) as a structure-directing agent under facile "aqueous room-temperature" conditions to increase the mass transfer and adsorption capacity tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The ZIF-8 pore structure and morphology were synchronously tuned by controlling the PDDA molecular weight and dosage. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Bruner-Emmett-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), NH₃-temperature-programmed desorption (NH₃-TPD) and adsorption results revealed abundant pore structures and open metal sites in the prepared materials, along with excellent TCH adsorption performance compared with ZIF-8, despite decreased BET surface areas. Initial screens revealed large adsorption capacities of hierarchical porous ZIF-8P3(4) (976.8 mg g^-1) due to the presence of more abundant unsaturated metal sites than ZIF-8 and novel hierarchical porous structures. Therefore, TCH adsorption on ZIF-8 and ZIF-8P3(4), including the kinetics, isotherms, thermodynamics and pH effect, was studied. The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Freundlich models better, indicating multilayer adsorption of TCH on the surface of the two absorbents. Adsorption behavior test, FTIR, XPS, BET and XRD results show that TCH adsorption on ZIF-8 and ZIF-8P3(4) most likely involves coordination bonds, electrostatic and π-π interactions, hydrogen bonds, and pore-filling effects. This study provides new insights into the template preparation of MOFs with high adsorption performance as potentially economical adsorbents to remove organic matter from contaminated water.

Simultaneous Removal of Pb2+ and Zn2+ Heavy Metals Using Fly Ash Na-X Zeolite and Its Carbon Na-X(C) Composite

Pure zeolite (Na-X) and a zeolite–carbon composite (Na-X(C)) were investigated as adsorbents of heavy metals—Pb²⁺ and Zn²⁺ from an aqueous solution. These materials were synthesized from fly ash—a waste from conventional hard coal combustion. Both solids were characterized using XRD, SEM-EDS, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, particle size and elemental composition analyses. The adsorption study was performed at pH 5 in the systems containing one or two adsorbates simultaneously. The obtained results showed that the pure zeolite was characterized by a more developed surface area (728 m²/g) than its carbon composite (272 m²/g), and the mean pore diameters were equal to 1.73 and 2.56 nm, respectively. The pure Na-X zeolite showed better adsorption properties towards heavy metals than its Na-X(C) composite, and Zn²⁺ adsorbed amounts were significantly higher than the Pb²⁺ ones (the highest experimental adsorption levels were: for Zn²⁺—656 and 600 mg/g, and for Pb²⁺—575 and 314 mg/g, on the Na-X and Na-X(C) surfaces, respectively). The zinc ions are exchanged with the cations inside the zeolite materials structure more effectively than lead ions with a considerably larger size. In the mixed systems, the competition between both heavy metals for access to the active sites on the adsorbent surface leads to the noticeable reduction in their adsorbed amounts. Moreover, the hydrochloric acid was a better desorbing agent for both heavy metals, especially Pb²⁺ one (desorption reached 78%), than sodium base (maximal desorption 25%).

Facile fabrication of novel magnetic ZIF-67 MOF@aminated chitosan composite beads for the adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have become premium candidates for the removal of hazardous contaminants from wastewater. However, MOFs have a vast obstacle which is their poor recyclability. In this study, ZIF-67 was decorated with magnetic Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles, and then embedded into aminated chitosan (AmCs) matrix to form core-dual shell Fe₃O₄/ZIF-67@AmCs composite beads. Diverse analysis tools were utilized to ensure the successful fabrication of the magnetic composite beads. The fabricated magnetic composite beads were examined their adsorptive removal aptitude towards toxic Cr(VI) ions. The gained results refereed that a maximum adsorption capacity of 119.05 mg/g was attained by magnetic Fe₃O₄/ZIF-67@AmCs composite beads at 25 °C. The process obeyed both of Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, and the pseudo 2nd order was more suitable kinetic model to represent the adsorption process. Besides, Fe₃O₄/ZIF-67@AmCs composite showed an excellent recyclability for the removal of Cr(VI) ions from their aqueous solutions for seven consecutive cycles.

Nano-MoO2 activates peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of PAH derivatives

The rapid and efficient degradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives with toxicological properties remains a substantial challenge. In this study, a cost-effective and eco-friendly catalyst, nano-MoO₂ (0.05 g L^-1), exhibited excellent performance in activating 4.0 mmol L^-1 peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of naphthalene derivatives with 1 mg L^-1 in aqueous systems; these derivatives include 1-methylnaphthalene, 1-nitronaphthalene, 1-chloronaphthalene, 1-naphthylamine and 1-naphthol, with high degradation rates of 87.52%, 86.23%, 97.87%, 99.74%, and 77.16%. Nano-MoO₂ acts as an electron donor by transferring an electron causing O-O bond of PMS to cleave producing SO₄^·-, and later ^·OH. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis combined with free radical quenching research indicated that SO₄^·- and ^·OH dominated the degradation of naphthalene derivatives, and O₂^·- and ¹O₂ participated in the processes. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the transformation of Mo(IV) to Mo(V) and Mo(VI), which suggested that the activation process proceeded via electron transfer from nano-MoO₂ to PMS. The applicability of the nano-MoO₂/PMS system in influencing parameters and stability was explored. The degradation pathways were primarily elucidated for each naphthalene derivative based on the intermediates identified in the systems. The -CH₃, -NO₂, -Cl, -OH substituents increased the positive electrostatic potential (ESP) on the molecular surface of 1-methylnaphthalene, 1-nitronaphthalene, 1-chloronaphthalene, and 1-naphthol, which reduced the electrophilic reaction and electron transfer between the reactive species and pollutants, leading to a lower degradation rate of naphthalene derivatives than the parent compound. However, the effect of -NH₂ substituents is the opposite. These findings suggest that nano-MoO₂ may aid as a novel catalyst in the future remediation of environments polluted with PAH derivatives.

Phosphate removal by ZIF-8@MWCNT hybrids in presence of effluent organic matter: Adsorbent structure, wastewater quality, and DFT analysis

Recently, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF8) and its derivatives have been applied in aqueous contaminant removal. Herein, three types of ZIF8@carbon nanotube (CNT) hybrids harvesting different pore structures and chemical bonding information are utilized for phosphate removal in the typical wastewater of activated sludge system (SW) and partial nitrification-denitrification treatment system (PND). Effluent organic matter (EfOM) is found to compete with phosphate for adsorption sites on adsorbents, resulting in reducing adsorptive capacities for phosphate, and the negative effect trend to become severer with increasing EfOM concentrations. Thus adverse impact are highly to be relieved by using ZIF8@CNT-2 (hybrids with CNT dosage of 120 mg) with novel structure design, the hybrid of which harvests the highest phosphate removal of 92.8-100%, the largest Partition coefficient (PC) of 9119.05 mg g^-1 μM with initial concentration of 0.96 mg L^-1, pH independence in the range from 4 to 10. Analyses of the XPS characterization and first-principles calculations demonstrate the dominant interactions of Zn-O-P and H-bond during phosphate adsorption process by ZIF8@CNT hybrids. Such interactions are suppressed in presence of EfOM by weakening the above-stated binding energy at different adsorption sites according to first-principles simulation, resulting in declined phosphate adsorption capacity. In this regard, the less sensitivity to co-existing EfOM of ZIF8@CNT-2 may be due to the increased P=O, Zn-O-P and P-OH and the strengthened tolerance of nanostructure. These results suggest the promising enhanced phosphate removal in presence of EfOM could be obtained by specifically designing adsorbent structure.

Facile synthesis of graphene oxide from graphite rods of recycled batteries by solution plasma exfoliation for removing Pb from water

We herein present a simple, fast, efficient and environmentally friendly technique to prepare graphene oxide (GO) from graphite rods of recycled batteries by using solution plasma exfoliated techniques at atmospheric pressure. The prepared GO with an average 3 nm-thickness and 1.5 μm-length, having large surface area and high porosity, has been used to remove Pb(ii) ions from the water. The obtained results indicated that the adsorption of Pb(ii) onto GO depends on pH, contact time, temperature and initial concentration of Pb(ii). The maximum adsorption capacity of Pb(ii) onto GO determined from the Langmuir model (with a high R² value of 0.9913) was 180.1 mg g⁻¹ at room temperature. A removal efficiency of ∼96.6% was obtained after 40 min. Calculations of thermodynamic parameters (ΔG°, ΔH° và ΔS°) show the adsorption of Pb(ii) ions on the GO surface is spontaneous and intrinsically heat-absorbing. The potential mechanism can be suggested here to be the interaction of the π–π* bonding electrons and Pb(ii) as well as the electrostatic attraction between Pb(ii) and the oxygen-containing functional groups on GO.

Preparation of a Novel Zn(II)-Imidazole Framework as an Efficient and Regenerative Adsorbent for Pb, Hg, and As Ion Removal From Water

An outstanding metal-organic framework sorbent (Zn-MOF) was prepared using Zn²⁺ and 3-amino-5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazole to eliminate toxic metal ions from water. Zn-MOF was detected via using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Zn-MOF is stable and has a very large surface area. The uptake properties of Zn-MOF were investigated. The maximum uptake capacity of Zn-MOF for Pb, Hg, and As ions was 1097, 32, and 718 mg/g, respectively. This was obtained at pH = 4, 5, and 6, respectively. The adsorption data is in good agreement with the Langmuir and pseudo-second-order rate models, indicating that the uptake process of Zn-MOF for toxic metal ions was a single layer uptake on a uniform surface via exchange of valence electrons. Thermodynamics shows that the uptake process is autogenic and endothermic. Zn-MOF can be reused at least 6 times. Mercury and lead strongly coordinated with Zn-MOF. The interaction between arsenic and Zn-MOF is weak chemical coordination and ion exchange. Zn-MOF has wide application prospects for toxic metal ion elimination.

Improved Removal Capacity and Equilibrium Time of Maghemite Nanoparticles Growth in Zeolite Type 5A for Pb(II) Adsorption

Novel magnetic zeolite type 5A nanocomposites were synthesized by the co-precipitation method and applied to lead removal from aqueous ambient. Maghemite nanoparticles were mixed with zeolite and, by controlling its content, transmission electron microscopy results gave sizes of 5 to 15 nm and selected area electron diffraction patterns confirmed the presence of zeolite. The nanocomposites have high specific surface area with values up to 194 m²/g. Magnetization measurements proved superparamagnetic behavior with saturation values of ~35 emu/gFe. Kinetic adsorption experiments showed removal efficiencies of 99.9% and an enhanced equilibrium time of 5 min. The lead concentrations after adsorption experiments lay under the permissible levels of 10 μg L⁻¹, according to the World Health Organization. The maximum adsorption capacity, estimated by Sips model, was 265 mg L⁻¹ at 300 K. The removal efficiency was significantly improved in the range of pH > 6, as well as in the presence of cation interferents such as Ca(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II). The adsorption mechanism was explained with cation exchange between Pb(II), the zeolite framework, and the protonated maghemite surface. Besides, our system revealed recyclability even after seven regeneration cycles. Thus, our synthesized materials have remarkable adsorption properties for lead water remediation processes.
