N-doped carbon armored metal phosphides grown in-situ on nickel foam as chainmail catalysts toward high efficiency electrolytic water splitting

Multifunctional Ni3S2@NF-based electrocatalysts for efficient and durable electrocatalytic water splitting

Transition-metal sulfides (TMSs) have indeed drawn dramatic interest as a potential species of electrocatalysts by virtue of their unique structural features. However, their poor stability and inherent activity have impeded their use in electrocatalytic water splitting. Here, we provide a rational design of a hierarchical nanostructured electrocatalyst containing CeOx-decorated NiCo-layered double hydroxide (LDH) coupled with Ni3S2 protrusions formed on a Ni foam (NF). Specifically, the as-prepared electrocatalyst, denoted as Ni2Co1 LDH-CeOx/Ni3S2@NF, presents only 250 and 300 mV overpotential at ±100 mA cm-2, respectively, along with the Tafel slope values of 92 and 52 mV dec-1, as well remarkable long-term life for water splitting in an alkaline electrolyte. Based on systematic experiments and theoretical analysis, the superior electrocatalytic property in terms of Ni2Co1 LDH-CeOx/Ni3S2@NF can be imputed to the following reasons: the porous framework of Ni3S2@NF provides a largely surface area and high conductivity; the NiCo LDH nanosheets provide enriched active sites and favorable adsorption ability; the oxygen-vacancy-rich CeOx optimizes the electronic configuration. Overall, these factors work synergistically to expedite the catalytic kinetics of splitting water. Our work concentrates on a rational interface to devise efficient, multifunctional, and serviceable electrocatalysts for future applications.

Nickel-induced charge redistribution in Ni-Fe/Fe3C@nitrogen-doped carbon nanocage as a robust Mott-Schottky bi-functional oxygen catalyst for rechargeable Zn-air battery

Designing earth-abundant and advanced bi-functional oxygen electrodes for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are extremely urgent but still ambiguous. Thus, metal-semiconductor nanohybrids were developed with functionally integrating ORR-active Ni species, OER-active Fe/Fe₃C components, and multifunctional N-doped carbon (NDC) support. Expectantly, the resulted NDC nanocage embedded with Ni-Fe alloy and Fe₃C particles, as assembled Mott-Schottky-typed catalyst, delivered a promoted half-wave potential of 0.904 V for ORR and a low overpotential of 315 mV at 10 mA/cm² for OER both in alkaline media, outperforming those of commercial Pt/C and RuO₂ counterparts. Most importantly, the optimized Ni-Fe/Fe₃C@NDC sample also afforded a peak power density of 267.5 mW/cm² with a specific capacity of 773.8 mAh/g_Zn and excellent durability over 80 h when used as the air electrode in rechargeable Zn-air batteries, superior to the state-of-the-art bi-functional catalysts. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that the introduction of Ni into the Fe/Fe₃C@NDC component could well manipulate the electronic structure of the designed electrocatalyst, leading to an effective built-in electric field established by the Mott-Schottky heterojunction to expedite the continuous interfacial charge-transfer and thus significantly promote the utilization of electrocatalytic active sites. Therefore, this work provides an avenue for the designing and developing robust and durable Mott-Schottky-typed bi-functional catalysts for promising energy conversion.

Nitrogen-doped carbon armored Cobalt oxide hollow nanocubes electrochemically anchored on fluorine-doped tin oxide substrate for acidic oxygen evolution reaction

Developments of non-precious metal based active and stable catalysts are of great importance and challenge to green hydrogen production from acidic electrocatalytic water splitting. Design of composite catalysts with synergy between active and stable components proves to be a promising approach. Herein, N-doped carbon armored Co₃O₄ hollow nanocubes electrochemically anchored on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrates are developed as efficient and stable catalysts for acidic oxygen evolution reactions. Co₃O₄ acts as the active component with N-doped carbon coating layer serving as the stable protection component, shielding Co₃O₄ from direct attack of anodic dissolution. Electrochemical fixation offers firm holding of the composite catalyst onto acid-tolerant FTO substrates and hollow nanocubes serve as nano-reactors for confined fast reactions. Under optimal conditions, the composite catalyst achieves an overpotential of 465 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 in 0.5 M H₂SO₄, and stays stable for 12 hr with a 10% increment in applied potentials.

Synergistic mechanism of Ni(OH)2/NiMoS heterostructure electrocatalyst with crystalline/amorphous interfaces for efficient hydrogen evolution over all pH ranges

Designing and fabricating efficient electrocatalysts is a practical step toward the commercial application of the efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over all pH ranges. Herein, novel Ti@Ni(OH)₂-NiMoS heterostructure with interface between crystalline Ni(OH)₂ and amorphous NiMoS was rationally designed and fabricated on Ti mesh (denoted as Ti@Ni(OH)₂-NiMoS). Acid etching and calcination experiments helped in accurate elucidation of the synergistic mechanism as well as the vital role on crystalline Ni(OH)₂ and amorphous NiMoS. In acidic solutions, the HER performance of Ti@Ni(OH)₂-NiMoS was mainly attributed to the amorphous NiMoS. In neutral, alkaline, and natural seawater solutions, the HER performance was mainly determined by the synergistic interface behaviors between the Ni(OH)₂ and NiMoS. The crystalline Ni(OH)₂ accelerated water dissociation kinetics, while the amorphous NiMoS provided abundant active sites and allowed for fast electron transfer rates. To deliver current densities of 10 mA·cm^-2 in acidic, neutral, alkaline, and natural seawater solutions, the Ti@Ni(OH)₂-NiMoS required overpotentials of 138, 198, 180 and 371 mV, respectively. This paper provides general guidelines for designing efficient electrocatalyst with crystalline/amorphous interfaces for efficient hydrogen evolution over all-pH ranges.

Co/MoC Nanoparticles Embedded in Carbon Nanoboxes as Robust Trifunctional Electrocatalysts for a Zn-Air Battery and Water Electrocatalysis

To meet the application needs of rechargeable Zn-air battery and electrocatalytic overall water splitting (EOWS), developing high-efficiency, cost-effective, and durable trifunctional catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution, and reduction reaction (OER and ORR) is extremely paramount yet challenging. Herein, the interface engineering concept and nanoscale hollowing design were proposed to fabricate N-doping carbon nanoboxes confined with Co/MoC nanoparticles. Uniform zeolitic imidazolate framework nanocube was employed as the starting material to construct the trifunctional electrocatalyst through the conformal polydopamine-Mo layer coating and the subsequent pyrolysis treatment. The Co@IC/MoC@PC catalyst displayed superior electrochemical ORR performances with a positive half-wave potential of 0.875 V and a high limiting current density of 5.89 mA/cm². When practically employed as an electrocatalyst in regenerative Zn-air battery, a high specific capacity of 728 mAh/g, a large peak power density of 221 mW/cm², a high open-circuit voltage of 1.482 V, and a low charge/discharge voltage gap of 0.41 V were obtained. Moreover, its practicability was further exploited by overall water splitting, affording low overpotentials of 277 and 68 mV at 10 mA/cm² for the OER and HER in 1 M KOH solution, respectively, and a decent operating potential of 1.57 V for EOWS. Ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation revealed that the Co/MoC interface synergistically facilitated the charge-transfer, thereby contributing to the enhancements of electrocatalytic ORR/OER/HER processes. More importantly, this catalyst design concept can offer some interesting prospects for the construction of outstanding trifunctional catalysts toward various energy conversion and storage devices.

Increasing Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Efficiency through Cobalt-Induced Intrastructural Enhancement and Electronic Structure Modulation

Electrolytic water splitting using surplus electricity represents one of the most cost-effective and promising strategies for hydrogen production. The high overpotential of the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) caused by the multi-electron transfer process with a high chemical energy barrier, however, limits its competitiveness. Here, a highly active and stable OER electrocatalyst was designed through a cobalt-induced intrastructural enhancement strategy combined with suitable electronic structure modulation. A carved carbon nanobox was embedded with tri-metal phosphide from a uniform Ni-Co-Fe Prussian blue analogue (PBA) nanocube by sequential NH3  ⋅ H2 O etching and thermal phosphorization. The sample exhibited an OER activity in an alkaline medium, reaching a current density of 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of 182 mV and displayed a small Tafel slope of 47 mV dec-1 , superior to the most recently reported OER electrocatalysts. Moreover, it showed impressive electrocatalytic durability, increasing by approximately 2.7 % of operating voltage after 24 h of continuous testing. The excellent OER activity and stability are ascribed to a favorable transfer of mass and charge provided by the porous carbon shell, synergistic catalysis between the three-component metal phosphides originating from appropriate electronic structure modulation, more exposed catalytic sites on the hollow structure, and chainmail catalysis resulting from the carbon protective layer. It is foreseen that this successfully demonstrated design concept can be easily extended to other heterogeneous catalyst designs.

Mixed Metal Phosphide Chainmail Catalysts Confined in N-Doped Porous Carbon Nanoboxes as Highly Efficient Water-Oxidation Electrocatalysts with Ultralow Overpotentials and Tafel Slopes

Electrocatalytic hydrogen production driven by surplus electric energies is considered a promising sustainable process for hydrogen supply. The high overpotential and low energy-conversion efficiency caused by the slow kinetics of the four-electron transfer oxygen-evolution reaction (OER), however, hamper its competitiveness. Herein, a highly stable, efficient OER catalyst was developed, taking the effects of both composition and nanostructure into account for the catalyst design. N-doped carbon-armored mixed metal phosphide nanoparticles confined in N-doped porous carbon nanoboxes, a particle-in-box nanostructure, were synthesized from monodisperse Ni₃[Fe(CN)₆]₂·H₂O nanocubes through sequential conformal polydopamine coating, ammonia etching, and thermal phosphorization. The product exhibited outstanding catalytic abilities for the OER in 1.0 M KOH, delivering 10, 100, and 250 mA/cm² at ultrasmall overpotentials of 203, 242, and 254 mV, respectively, with an ultrasmall Tafel slope of 38 mV/dec, outperforming most recently reported top-notch iron-group-based OER catalysts. The long-term stability was also excellent, showing a small chronopotentiometric decay of 2.5% over a 24 h operation at 50 mA/cm². The enhanced catalytic efficiency and stability may be attributable to the unique particle-in-box structure as a nanoreactor offering a local, fast reaction environment, the conductive N-doped porous carbon shell for fast charge and mass transport, the synergistic effect between multicomponent metal phosphides for enhanced intrinsic activities, and the carbon protection layer to prevent/delay the catalyst core from being deactivated. This combined particle-in-box and chainmail design concept for electrocatalysts is unique and advantageous and may be readily applied to the general field of heterogeneous reactions.
