Role of the cationic headgroup to conformational changes undergone by shorter alkyl chain surfactant and water molecules at the air-liquid interface

Regular Arrays of Rod-Shaped Molecular Photoswitches: Synthesis, Preparation, Characterization, and Selective Photoswitching within Mono- and Bilayer Systems

We assembled photoresponsive mono- and bilayer systems with well-defined properties from rod-shaped molecules equipped with different photoswitches. Using properly chosen chromophores (diarylethene-based switch and unidirectional light-driven molecular motor), we then selectively targeted layers made of the same types of photoswitches using appropriate monochromatic light. UV-vis analysis confirmed smooth and unrestricted photoisomerization. To achieve this, we synthesized a new class of triptycene-based molecular pedestals adept at forming sturdy Langmuir-Blodgett films on a water-air interface. The films were smoothly transferred to gold and quartz surfaces. Repeated deposition afforded bilayer systems: one layer containing diarylethene-based photoswitches and the other a unidirectional light-driven molecular motor. Structural analysis of both mono- and bilayer systems revealed the molecules to be tilted with carboxylic functions pointing to the surface. At least two different polymorphs differing in monolayer thickness and tilt angle (~40° and ~60°) were identified on the gold surface.

Chemical Feedback in the Self-Assembly and Function of Air-Liquid Interfaces: Insight into the Bottlenecks of CO2 Direct Air Capture

As fossil fuels remain a major source of energy throughout the world, developing efficient negative emission technologies, such as direct air capture (DAC), which remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air, becomes critical for mitigating climate change. Although all DAC processes involve CO₂ transport from air into a sorbent/solvent, through an air-solid or air-liquid interface, the fundamental roles the interfaces play in DAC remain poorly understood. Herein, we study the interfacial behavior of amino acid (AA) solvents used in DAC through a combination of vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. This study revealed that the absorption of atmospheric CO₂ has antagonistic effects on subsequent capture events that are driven by changes in bulk pH and specific ion effects that feedback on surface organization and interactions. Among the three AAs (leucine, valine, and phenylalanine) studied, we identify and separate behaviors from CO₂ loading, chemical changes, variations in pH, and specific ion effects that tune structural and chemical degrees of freedom at the air-aqueous interface. The fundamental mechanistic findings described here are anticipated to enable new approaches to DAC based on exploiting interfaces as a tool to address climate change.

Infrared Analysis and Effect of Nitrogen and Nitrous Oxide on the Glass Transition of Methanol Cryofilms

Methanol plays an important role in studying the structure and dynamics of hydrogen bonds in alcohols and other physiologically important compounds in the condensed state. The physical vapor deposition method and two-beam interferometry make it possible to study the structure of polyatomic molecules, the nature and character of intermolecular interactions, and the internal structure of various compounds. Thus, it becomes possible to analyze changes in the internal structure of substances near the points of their phase transitions and glass transitions at ultralow temperatures. In this work, we have studied the effect of nitrogen and nitrous oxide on the dependence of refractive indices of methanol on temperature and on structural-phase transformations upon heating from 16 to 160 K.

Optical Studies of Thin Films of Cryocondensed Mixtures of Water and Admixture of Nitrogen and Argon

The interaction of host molecules with water molecules is of primary importance in astrophysical and atmospheric studies. Water-binding interactions continue to attract a broad interest in various fields, especially those related to the formation of assembly structures. Using the physical vapor deposition (PVD) method and a two-beam interferometer with a wavelength of 406 nm, the refractive indices of thin films of a water and nitrogen (argon) mixture were calculated in the range from 15 to 35 K. The results of temperature transformations of the obtained films from a two-beam interferometer, and thermal desorption characteristics from the temperature of condensation to the temperature of evaporation of water (15-180 K), are presented. The relationship between the signal of the interferometer, the refractive index, and the film thickness during glass transition is demonstrated.

Bursting the bubble: A molecular understanding of surfactant-water interfaces

Surfactant science has historically emphasized bulk, thermodynamic measurements to understand the microemulsion properties of greatest industrial significance, such as interfacial tensions, phase behavior, and thermal stability. Recently, interest in the molecular properties of surfactants has grown among the physical chemistry community. This has led to the application of cutting-edge spectroscopic methods and advanced simulations to understand the specific interactions that give rise to the previously studied bulk characteristics. In this Perspective, we catalog key findings that describe the surfactant-oil and surfactant-water interfaces in molecular detail. We emphasize the role of ultrafast spectroscopic methods, including two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy and sum-frequency-generation spectroscopy, in conjunction with molecular dynamics simulations, and the role these techniques have played in advancing our understanding of interfacial properties in surfactant microemulsions.

Plasmonic Gold Nanohole Arrays for Surface-Enhanced Sum Frequency Generation Detection

Nobel metal nanohole arrays have been used extensively in chemical and biological systems because of their fascinating optical properties. Gold nanohole arrays (Au NHAs) were prepared as surface plasmon polariton (SPP) generators for the surface-enhanced sum-frequency generation (SFG) detection of 4-Mercaptobenzonitrile (4-MBN). The angle-resolved reflectance spectra revealed that the Au NHAs have three angle-dependent SPP modes and two non-dispersive localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) modes under different structural orientation angles (sample surface orientation). An enhancement factor of ~30 was achieved when the SPP and LSPR modes of the Au NHAs were tuned to match the incident visible (VIS) and output SFG, respectively. This multi-mode matching strategy provided flexible controls and selective spectral windows for surface-enhanced measurements, and was especially useful in nonlinear spectroscopy where more than one light beam was involved. The structural orientation- and power-dependent performance demonstrated the potential of plasmonic NHAs in SFG and other nonlinear sensing applications, and provided a promising surface molecular analysis development platform.

Direct Observation of Adsorption Morphologies of Cationic Surfactants at the Gold Metal-Liquid Interface

Understanding interfacial phenomena is important in processes like corrosion, catalysis, and electrochemical reactions. Specifically, in corrosion inhibition, the assembly of adsorbed surfactants at metal-water interfaces in well-packed, ordered layers is desired. We provide direct evidence of the role of alkyl tails of surfactants in the formation of ordered adsorbed layers at metal-water interfaces. We have employed surface-specific sum frequency generation (SFG) spectroscopy to probe the in situ adsorption and self-assembly of cationic surfactants, alkyldimethylbenzyl ammonium bromides of tail lengths n = 4 (C4) and 12 (C12), without any applied potential or stimulus, at the gold-water interface. Our SFG measurements show that C12 Quat adsorbs as an ordered monolayer, whereas C4 Quat adsorbs in a disordered monolayer. All-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of these surfactants corroborate with SFG results. These findings provide new insights on how hydrophobic interactions between alkyl tails of surfactants affect their self-assembly at metal-water interfaces.
