Potentiostatic electrodeposition of Ni-Se-Cu on nickel foam as an electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Dandelion-like VSe2-embellished CuSe-Co3Se4 hollow nanotube clusters as bifunctional catalysts for high-performance alkaline hydrogen evolution and solar cells

Among the various non-precious metal catalysts that drive hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) and dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), transition metal selenides (TMSs) stand out due to their unique electronic properties and tunable morphology. Herein, the multicomponent selenide CuSe-Co3Se4@VSe2 was successfully synthesized by doping with metal element vanadium and selenization on the copper-cobalt carbonate hydroxide (CuCo-CH) template. CuSe-Co3Se4@VSe2 exhibited the dandelion-like cluster structure composed of hollow nanotubes doped with VSe2 nanoparticles. Due to the unique structure and the synergistic effect of various elements, CuSe-Co3Se4@VSe2 showed excellent alkaline HER and DSSC performances. The DSSC based on CuSe-Co3Se4@VSe2 exhibited an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.64 %, which was much higher than that of Pt (8.39 %). Besides, it possessed a low HER overpotential of 76 mV@10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 88.9 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH.

Spark plasma sintered porous Ni as a novel substrate of Ni3Se2@Ni self-supporting electrode for ultra-durable hydrogen evolution reaction

Developing efficient and durable self-supporting catalytic electrodes is an important way for industrial applications of hydrogen evolution reaction. Currently, commercial nickel foam (NF)-based electrode has been widely used due to its good catalytic performance. However, the NF consisting of smooth skeleton surface and large pores not only exhibits poor conductivity but also provides insufficient space for catalyst decoration and sufficient adhesion, resulting in inadequate catalytic performance and poor durability of NF-based electrodes. In this paper, a novel three-dimensional porous Ni substrate with multangular skeleton surface and small pore structure was prepared by a modified spark plasma sintering technique, and subsequently Ni3Se2@Porous Ni electrode with a large number of Ni3Se2 nanosheets uniformly distributed on the surface was obtained by one-step in-situ selenization. The electrode exhibits outstanding conductivity and catalytic hydrogen evolution reaction, providing a low overpotential of 183 mV at a current density of 100 mA cm-2. Due to the strong interfacial bonding between Ni and Ni3Se2, the Ni3Se2@Porous Ni electrode shows strong durability, which can work stably at 85 mA cm-2 for more than 200 h. This work provides an effective strategy for the rational preparation of metal substrates for efficient and durable self-supporting catalytic electrodes.

Ni-CeO2 Heterostructure Promotes Hydrogen Evolution Reaction via Tuning of the O-H Bond Length of Adsorbed Water at the Electrolyte/Electrode Interface

Understanding the properties and structure of reactant water molecules at the electrolyte solution/electrode interface is relevant to know the mechanisms of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, this approach has rarely been implemented due to the elusive local microenvironment in the vicinity of the catalyst. Taking the Ni-CeO2 heterostructure immobilized onto carbon paper (Ni-CeO2 /CP) as a model, the dynamic behavior of adsorbed intermediates during the reaction was measured by in situ surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection configuration (ATR-SEIRAS). Theoretical calculations are used in combination to comprehend the potential causes of increased HER activity. The results show that the O-H bond of adsorbed water at the electrolyte solution/electrode interface becomes longer for promoting the dissociation of water and accelerating the kinetically slow Volmer step. In addition, forming the Ni-CeO2 heterostructure interface optimizes the hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy, thus increasing HER activity. Therefore, the Ni-CeO2 /CP electrode exhibits remarkably low HER overpotentials of 37 and 119 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm-2 , which are close to commercial Pt/C (16 and 102.6 mV, respectively).

Succulent-plant-like Ni-Co alloy efficient catalysts for direct borohydride fuel cells

A Ni-Co alloy catalyst with a unique succulent-plant-like morphology is prepared by a simple electrodeposition method, while the effects of deposition conditions on its performance are also investigated systematically. The research results show that the Ni_0.889-Co_0.111 catalyst exhibits excellent activity, selectivity, and stability to the borohydride oxidation reaction. Moreover, when Ni_0.889-Co_0.111 is assembled as the anode catalyst, the direct borohydride fuel cell delivers a peak power density of 490 mW cm^-2 and an open-circuit voltage of 1.87 V at 343 K and can run stably for dozens of hours. The significant improvement in Ni-Co catalyst performance can be attributed to its unique succulent-plant-like morphology and the introduction of an appropriate amount of Co.

Electrochemical tuning of a Cu3P/Ni2P hybrid for a promoted hydrogen evolution reaction

Developing novel and high performance electrocatalysts for use in hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) as substitutes for noble metal based electrocatalysts is imperative and, so far, has been a challenge. Herein, a self-supported Cu₃P/Ni₂P hybrid on nickel foam (Cu₃P/Ni₂P@NF) is prepared by a simple galvanic replacement reaction coupled with phosphorization. Subsequently, Cu₃P/Ni₂P@NF is modified by conducting cyclic voltammetry scans in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ solution. Interestingly, after electrochemical tuning, the as-prepared Cu₃P/Ni₂P@NF exhibits significantly enhanced HER activity. Particularly, the resultant Cu₃P/Ni₂P@NF catalyst after 4000 cycles exhibits superior catalytic activity and long-term stability for HER with an overpotential of only 67 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm^-2, and a low Tafel slope of 43.9 mV dec^-1. The improved HER performance is attributed to the increased intrinsic activity of the Cu₃P/Ni₂P@NF with its optimized crystal and electronic structure, as well as an increased number of accessible active sites due to surface dissolution and recrystallization induced by electrochemical modification.

Electrodeposition: An efficient method to fabricate self-supported electrodes for electrochemical energy conversion systems

The development of electrocatalysts for energy conversion systems is essential for alleviating environmental problems and producing useful energy sources as alternatives to fossil fuels. Improving the catalytic performance and stability of electrocatalysts is a major challenge in the development of energy conversion systems. Moreover, understanding their electrode structure is important for enhancing the energy efficiency. Recently, binder-free self-supported electrodes have been investigated because the seamless contact between the electrocatalyst and substrate minimizes the contact resistance as well as facilitates fast charge transfer at the catalyst/substrate interface and high catalyst utilization. Electrodeposition is an effective and facile method for fabricating self-supported electrodes in aqueous solutions under mild conditions. Facile fabrication without a polymer binder and controlability of the compositional and morphological properties of the electrocatalyst make electrodeposition methods suitable for enhancing the performance of energy conversion systems. Herein, we summarize recent research on self-supported electrodes fabricated by electrodeposition for energy conversion reactions, particularly focusing on cathodic reactions of electrolyzer system such as hydrogen evolution, electrochemical CO₂ reduction, and electrochemical N₂ reduction reactions. The deposition conditions, morphological and compositional properties, and catalytic performance of the electrocatalyst are reviewed. Finally, the prospective directions of electrocatalyst development for energy conversion systems are discussed.

Vanadium doped FeP nanoflower with optimized electronic structure for efficient hydrogen evolution

Reasonable design of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst from the perspective of electronic structure is a vital way to optimize the catalytic activity. Mono-metallic iron-based phosphates have been shown to be active toward HER, but their performance remains unsatisfactory despite their abundant reserves and low preparation cost. Here, guided by the d-band center and band structure theories, V-doped FeP nanoflower grown directly on iron foam are constructed. Combining the density functional theory (DFT) simulations with physical characterizations reveal that the enhanced HER activity is mainly attributed to the lowed d-band central position, increased water dissociation capacity, decreased hydrogen formation energy barrier and reduced charge transfer impedance. As a HER catalyst in 1 M KOH, the obtained V-FeP shows low overpotentials of ∼149, ∼246 and ∼290 mV to deliver the current densities of 100, 500 and 1000 mA cm^-2 with at least 24 h. When coupled with other highly active oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst (NiFe-LDH/IF), the NiFe-LDH/IF⁽⁺⁾ || V-FeP/IF^(-) pair also performs a low cell voltage and over 100-h stability at high current density of 1000 mA cm^-2, which endows it a large potential in the practical electrolytic water industry. Our work may provide a reference for the enhancement of inert and low-cost HER-active iron phosphide.

N, P-doped carbon supported ruthenium doped Rhenium phosphide with porous nanostructure for hydrogen evolution reaction using sustainable energies

Developing efficient and cost-effective catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is vital to hydrogen energy's commercial applications. In this study, N,P-doped carbon supported ruthenium (Ru) doped triruthenium tetraphosphide (Re₃P₄) (Ru-Re₃P₄/NPC) with porous nanostructure is prepared using the low-toxic melamine phosphate as the carbon and phosphorous source. The in-situ generated N,P-doped carbon layers play a pivotal role in regulating the electrocatalytic activity by avoiding the aggregation of the nanoparticles and increasing the specific surface area. Moreover, Ru doping contributes to the remarkable electrocatalytic performance of the prepared nanomaterials. Impressively, the as-synthesized Ru-Re₃P₄/NPC presents remarkable electrocatalytic performances toward HER with small overpotentials of 39 mV, 115 mV, and 88 mV to deliver 10 mA cm^-2 in alkaline, neutral, and acidic media. Moreover, the prepared electrocatalyst can drive water-splitting with a small potential of 1.45 V@10 mA cm^-2 and use sustainable energies, including solar, wind, and thermal, as electric resources. This work paves a novel and valuable way to enhance the electrocatalytic performances of metal phosphides.

Nucleation and growth mechanism of dendrite-free Ni–Cu catalysts by magneto-electrodeposition for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Ultrahigh activity of molybdenum/vanadium-doped Ni-Co phosphides nanoneedles based on ion-exchange for hydrogen evolution at large current density

Heteroatom doping is a promising strategy to optimize the electronic structure of transition metal phosphides so enhancing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, complex and harsh experimental design is often required to achieve homogeneous doping of corresponding elements while achieving the best regulating effect. Herein, a facile ion-exchange (IE) strategy is applied to dope Mo/V species evenly into Ni-Co phosphides under mild conditions while maintaining the nanoneedle morphology. The electrochemical characterization verifies Mo dopants have a better electronic regulation effect on NiCoP crystal than V dopants, corresponding to the better hydrogen evolution performance of Mo-NiCoP/NF. Notably, due to the highly dispersed nanoneedle morphology, the synergistic effect of Ni-Co phosphides, and the optimized electronic structure, Mo-NiCoP/NF demonstrates a higher activity than that of the noble metal Pt/C at the high current density (>99 mA cm^-2). The present work is supposed to open new sights for the development of high-performance catalysts by ion-exchange strategy.

Excellent Properties of Ni-15 wt.% W Alloy Electrodeposited from a Low-Temperature Pyrophosphate System

Electrodeposited Ni-W alloy coatings are considered to be one of the most suitable candidate coatings to replace carcinogenic hexavalent chromium coatings. In this work, Ni-W alloys are electrodeposited from pyrophosphate baths containing different concentrations of Na2WO4 2H2O (CW) at 40 °C. Both CW and the applied current density can affect the W content in the coatings. The effect of CW becomes weaker with the increased current density. The Ni-W alloys with 15 ± 5 wt.% W (Ni-15 wt.% W) are obtained from the bath containing 40 g L−1 CW at a high current of 8 A dm−2. The microhardness, corrosion resistance and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are measured with a microhardness tester and an electrochemical workstation. The modified properties are studied by heat treatment from 200 to 700 °C. The highest microhardness of 895.62 HV and the better HER property is presented after heat treatment at 400 °C, while the best corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution appears at 600 °C.

Nucleation and growth mechanisms of an electrodeposited Ni-Se-Cu coating on nickel foam

Electrocatalysts for water splitting have been widely explored among recent years. In this study, nickel-selenium-copper (Ni-Se-Cu) coating was synthesized on nickel foam through potentiostatic electrodeposition. The electrochemical kinetics and nucleation mechanisms of the deposition were investigated, and the diffusion coefficient D from different deposition potentials and temperatures was calculated. Results reveal that the electrodeposition of Ni-Se-Cu follows an instantaneous nucleation and diffusion-controlled three-dimensional (3D) growth mechanism. Deposition potential and bath temperature slightly effect the nucleation mechanism of electrodeposition. The apparent activation energy E_a of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte of Ni-Se-Cu is 21.1 kJ·mol^-1, which is lower than that of Ni-Se (37.7 kJ·mol^-1). The majority phase formed by nickel and selenium is Ni₃Se₂, and a Ni(Cu) solid solution forms after the incorporation of Cu atoms into a Ni lattice.

Optimization of nickel selenide for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions by response surface methodology

In this study, the electrocatalytic activity of Ni-Se electrode synthesized on nickel foam by pulse electrodeposition was optimized through the design of experiments (DOE) approach using the response surface methodology (RSM) for both hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. The frequency (f), duty cycle (dc), current density (i), and electrodeposition time (sum of t_ons) were chosen as the parameters of the pulse electrodeposition method. The analyses of variance (ANOVA) were performed on the responses of the designed experiments that included the required overpotential at the current density of 10 mA/cm² for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) (η_10,HER and η_10,OER), active surface area (R_f) and intrinsic electrocatalytic activity (i/R_f). The results indicated that η_10,HER, η_10,OER, and R_f are mainly influenced by duty cycle and electrodeposition time, while i/R_f is affected by frequency and time. The optimized NiSe₂ electrode synthesized under optimal conditions of pulse electrodeposition (low duty cycle and prolonged electrodeposition time) showed the most desirable values for η_10,HER, η_10,OER, and R_f, equal to 44 mV (vs. RHE), 235 mV (vs. RHE) and 14700, respectively. The nanostructured NiSe₂ demonstrated the highest potential in the bifunctional application of OER and HER.

Intercalation-induced partial exfoliation of NiFe LDHs with abundant active edge sites for highly enhanced oxygen evolution reaction

Edge sites and interlayer space of NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs) play an important role in water oxidation. However, the combined effect of interlayer expansion and partial exfoliation on the catalytic activity is yet to be investigated. Herein, scalable synthesis of partially exfoliated citrate-intercalated NiFe LDHs with tunable interlayer space have been achieved. The effect of citrate concentration on the phase, morphology, surface elemental composition, electronic states of surface metals, and electrochemical properties are comprehensively studied. The unique structure results in improved intrinsic catalytic activity and abundant active edge sites for oxygen evolution reaction. The optimal NiFe LDHs show an overpotential of 225 mV at 10 mA cm^-2, which is much smaller than that (∼305 mV) of the single-layer NiFe LDH nanosheets reported in the literature. The high catalytic activity can be mainly attributed to the combined effect between the enlarged interlayer space and the partial exfoliation/nanosheet thickness. That is, the interlayer space is related to the reaction kinetics/mechanism, while the degree of exfoliation affects the magnitude of the current density at a certain potential.

Investigation on nanostructured Cu-based electrocatalysts for improvising water splitting: a review

In this review, various forms of Cu based nanostructures have been explored in terms of improvise and enhancing their activity and durability with vast investigation for OER, HER and TWS applications.
