Enhanced fluoride removal using Mg-Zr binary metal oxide nanoparticles confined in a strong-base anion exchanger

Generally, the pH of fluorinated groundwater or many industrial wastewater is neutral, while the majority of metal-modified adsorbents can work efficiently only under acidic conditions. In this study, we synthesized a novel hybrid adsorbent, Mg-Zr-D213, by loading nano-Mg/Zr binary metal (hydrogen) oxides in a strong-base anion exchanger, D213, to enhance the adsorption of fluoride from neutral water. Mg-Zr-D213 exhibited a better fluoride-removal capacity in neutral water than monometallic modified resins. Under the interference of competing anions and coexisting organic acids, Mg-Zr-D213 exhibited superior selectivity. The Langmuir model indicated that the fitted maximum sorption capacity of Mg-Zr-D213 was 41.38 mg/g. The results of column experiments showed that the effective treatment volume of Mg-Zr-D213 was 8-16-times higher than that of D213 for both synthetic groundwater and actual industrial wastewater, and that NaOH-NaCl eluent could effectively recover more than 95% of fluoride. Adsorption experiments with Mg/Zr metal (hydrogen) oxide particles and D213 separately demonstrated a synergistic effect between -N+(CH3)3 and Mg/Zr metal (hydrogen) oxide particles. The ligand exchange or metal-ligand interaction of Mg/Zr metal (hydrogen) oxide particles on fluoride was further demonstrated via X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Overall, Mg-Zr-D213 has great potential for enhanced fluoride removal in neutral water.

New design to enhance phosphonate selective removal from water by MOF confined in hyper-cross-linked resin

Although polymeric anion exchange resins can remove phosphonates, they lack selectivity for target phosphonates and are susceptible to interference by anions and other substances. Here, we developed a novel strategy via confining MIL-101(Fe)-NH2 inside commercial resins IRA-900 for high-efficient and precise phosphonate removal, accompanying with the improvement of the stability and recovery of MIL-101(Fe)-NH2. The obtained nanocomposite MIL-101(Fe)-NH2@IRA-900 (MFNI) exhibited significantly enhanced phosphonate removal in the presence of competing anions (Cl-, SO42-, NO3- and CO32-) and natural organic matter (humic acid) at high concentrations (2-4 times of phosphonate concentration). Moreover, MFNI displayed the highest phosphonate adsorption capacity (12.9 mg P/g) and the fastest adsorption kinetics (120 min) than hydrated ferric oxides modified IRA-900 (HFOI) (6.7 mg P/g, 180 min), MIL-101(Fe)-NH2 (7.6 mg P/g, 240 min) and IRA-900 (5.6 mg P/g, 360 min). Such higher adsorption affinity and anti-interference ability came from the synergistic effect of the host IRA-900 (hydrogen-bond interaction and electrostatic attraction) and the embedded MIL-101(Fe)-NH2 (ligand exchange). The depleted MFNI could be regenerated with a binary NaOH-NaCl solution and reused without significant loss of capacity. Column adsorption runs by using MFNI indicated the fresh MFNI could achieve 100 % removal of PPOA in 10.5 h continuously feeding, which offered the possibility of achieving potential large-scale applications. In general, a new MOF-confined design approach was practiced to achieve selective elimination of phosphates and to improve the stability and recovery of MOF.

Comparative Investigation of Phosphate Adsorption Efficiencies of MOF-76 (Ce) and Metal Oxides Derived from MOF-76 (Ce)

Phosphate pollution is a very challenging problem for the water environment. Phosphate mixed with water in various ways causes eutrophication. To sustain life in aquatic systems, phosphate ions must be cleaned. Therefore, it is very important to remove phosphate in wastewater. Here, an adsorption method has been tried for the removal of phosphate. MOF-76 (Ce), a cerium-based metal-organic framework, was synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Since metal oxides are known to be successful in phosphate adsorption, CeO2 nanoparticles were also obtained by pyrolysis of this MOF structure. The phosphate adsorption efficiencies of both adsorbents were compared. The characterization methods (SEM, FTIR, XRD, and TGA) were applied to adsorbents. The kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamics studies were applied to experimental results. At 298 K, the adsorption capacity of MOF-76 (Ce) is higher than that of CeO2, according to Langmuir isotherm qm values. The qm values are 72.97 and 55.71 mg/g, respectively. Both adsorbents follow the pseudo second-order kinetic model. It has been found that MOF-76 (Ce) has a pH-selective property in phosphate adsorption. No change was observed in the phosphate adsorption capacity of CeO2 with pH. In terms of thermodynamics, the endothermic reaction is valid for both adsorbents.

A Recyclable Magnetic Aminated Lignin Supported Zr-La Dual-Metal Hydroxide for Rapid Separation and Highly Efficient Sequestration of Phosphate

The application of lignin-based adsorbents in the efficient removal of phosphate from wastewater has attracted much attention and been intensively studied in recent years. However, most currently reported lignin-based adsorbents are difficult to recover and recycle. Herein, we have developed a recyclable, nanostructured bio-adsorbent, poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI)-modified lignin (LG) integrated with Fe3O4 and Zr-La dual-metal hydroxide (LG-NH2@Fe3O4@Zr-La), by the Mannich reaction followed by the chemical coprecipitation method. Multilayer adsorption existed on the surface of LG-NH2@Fe3O4@Zr-La based on the isotherm fitting curve, and its adsorption capacity reached 57.8 mg P g−1, exhibiting a higher phosphate uptake than most reported metallic oxide-based composites. The adsorption process was dominated by inner-sphere complexation of ligand-exchange and electrostatic interactions. Moreover, LG-NH2@Fe3O4@Zr-La exhibited excellent selectivity against coexisting anions, and the adsorption was more efficient under acidic conditions. When the phosphate concentration was 2.0 mg P L−1, the removal efficiency of phosphate reached 99.5% and the residual concentration was only 10 μg P L−1, which meets the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standard for eutrophication prevention. In addition, the LG-NH2@Fe3O4@Zr-La displayed excellent reusability, maintaining 91.8% of removal efficiency after five cycles. Importantly, owing to the magnetic properties of the loaded Fe3O4, the resulting composite could be separated within 30 s under an external magnetic field. Thus, the separable and recyclable biobased magnetic adsorbent developed in this work exhibited promising application in phosphate capture from real sewage. This research study provides a new perspective for lignin valorization in lignocellulose biorefineries and establishes an approach for developing an economical and efficient bio-adsorbent for phosphate removal from wastewater.

Enhanced phosphate removal from water by hydrated neodymium oxide-based nanocomposite: Performance, mechanism, and validation

Phosphorus (P) control has been recognized as an imperative task to mitigate water eutrophication and settle the imminent shortage of P resources. Despite intensive effort put into this matter, it is still generally challenging for the current methods to remove and even potentially recover phosphorus (as phosphate) from complicated water matrices. To this end, we proposed a novel nanocomposite via coupling polystyrene anion exchanger (PsAX) with hydrated neodymium oxide (HNdO) nanoparticle for selective removal of phosphate. The developed nanocomposite, i.e., HNdO-PsAX, exhibited quite stable and efficient phosphate adsorption over a wide pH range of 3.0-10.0 with the maximum adsorption capacity as 85.4 mg P/g. It also showed satisfied anti-interference against various competing substances; notably, HNdO-PsAX obviously outperformed Phoslock, a commercial lanthanum-based adsorbent exclusively for phosphate sequestration, particularly under the interference of bicarbonate and humic acid, which were admitted as the paralyzing factors for Phoslock. The superior affinity of HNdO-PsAX towards phosphate, driven by the specific Nd-P inner-sphere complexation as evidenced by XPS, FT-IR, and the lattice evolution of HNdO nanoparticle, renders the nanocomposite eminently suitable for sequestrating trace phosphate. Fixed-bed treatment validated that HNdO-PsAX was capable of treating ∼11,800 bed volume of a simulated wastewater (from 2.0 to below 0.5 mg P/L), approximately 12 times higher than that of the previously reported Fe-based nanocomposite (HFO-PsAX, ∼ 900 BV); also, a satisfactory outcome in treating authentic municipal wastewater by HNdO-PsAX and the feasibility of regenerating the exhausted one by a binary NaOH-NaCl solution were recognized. This work provides a new potion of enhanced phosphorous control for surface water and wastewater.

Metal-based adsorbents for water eutrophication remediation: A review of performances and mechanisms

Controlling eutrophication requires satisfying stringent phosphorus concentration standards. Metal-based adsorbents can effectively remove excess phosphorus from water bodies and achieve ultra-low phosphorus concentration control for wastewater. This review focuses on the material properties and phosphorus removal mechanism of metal-based adsorbents (Fe, Al, Ca, Mg, La). There are significant differences in physical and chemical properties of different metal materials, due to the different preparation methods and synthetic materials. The main factors affecting phosphorus removal performance include particle size, crystal structure and pH_PZC. Smaller particle size, more disordered crystal structure and higher pH_PZC are more favorable for phosphorus removal. The main mechanism of phosphorus removal by metal-based adsorbents is ligand exchange, which makes it exhibit excellent adsorption capacity, fast kinetics and well selectivity for phosphate. In addition, in order to improve the phosphorus removal performance, the surface properties of the adsorbent (e.g., surface charge, surface area, and functional groups) can be effectively improved by dispersion of biochar carriers or combination of multiple metal materials. In further studies, we should improve the absorption capacity of the adsorbent under high pH conditions and the resistance to coexisting ion interference. Finally, in order to ensure the effective application of metal-based adsorbents in the phosphorus removal field, experimental scale should be expanded in future work to suit the actual water body conditions.

Covalent and Non-covalent Functionalized Nanomaterials for Environmental Restoration

Nanotechnology has emerged as an extraordinary and rapidly developing discipline of science. It has remolded the fate of the whole world by providing diverse horizons in different fields. Nanomaterials are appealing because of their incredibly small size and large surface area. Apart from the naturally occurring nanomaterials, synthetic nanomaterials are being prepared on large scales with different sizes and properties. Such nanomaterials are being utilized as an innovative and green approach in multiple fields. To expand the applications and enhance the properties of the nanomaterials, their functionalization and engineering are being performed on a massive scale. The functionalization helps to add to the existing useful properties of the nanomaterials, hence broadening the scope of their utilization. A large class of covalent and non-covalent functionalized nanomaterials (FNMs) including carbons, metal oxides, quantum dots, and composites of these materials with other organic or inorganic materials are being synthesized and used for environmental remediation applications including wastewater treatment. This review summarizes recent advances in the synthesis, reporting techniques, and applications of FNMs in adsorptive and photocatalytic removal of pollutants from wastewater. Future prospects are also examined, along with suggestions for attaining massive benefits in the areas of FNMs.

Struvite crystallization by using active serpentine: An innovative application for the economical and efficient recovery of phosphorus from black water

Recovery of phosphorus from wastewater through struvite crystallization is one of the most attractive methods. However, the cost of chemical consumption makes this technology is unattractive to some extent. In this work, highly active serpentine was prepared by one-step mechanical activation and then used to recover phosphate as struvite from the black water containing 132.8 mg/L phosphorus and 3144 mg/L ammonia nitrogen. The results indicated that the prepared active serpentine can release magnesium ions and hydroxide ions simultaneously into an aqueous solution and is an ideal raw material for struvite crystallization. The factors for phosphorus recovery in this process mainly include mechanical activation intensity, serpentine dosage, and contact time. For the actual black water, a high recovery rate of phosphorus (>98%) is achieved by using active serpentine as the magnesium and alkali source for struvite precipitation. The recovery product was identified as struvite with a median particle size of 32.96 μm. It was confirmed that the mechanical activation damaged the crystal structure of the raw serpentine, improving the activity of Mg²⁺ and OH^-. The undissolved Si-containing particles act as crystal seeds, accelerating the struvite crystallization process. Furthermore, a pilot-scale test was conducted with a rural public toilet in Xiong'an New District, Hebei Province. The results showed that an acceptable phosphorus recovery (98%) could be achieved using active serpentine. Additionally, it was demonstrated that the serpentine process to recover phosphate as struvite reduced the cost by 54.4% in compared with an ordinary chemical process. The active serpentine is a promising dual source of magnesium and alkali for the phosphorus recovery by the struvite method. It has a potential prospect for the large-scale application in phosphorus recovery and struvite fertilizer production.

Magnetic aminated lignin/CeO2/Fe3O4 composites with tailored interfacial chemistry and affinity for selective phosphate removal

Phosphorus (P) has brought a series of environmental problems while benefiting mankind. To reclaim phosphorus from wastewater efficiently and conveniently, a novel magnetic adsorbent with aminated lignin/CeO₂/Fe₃O₄ composites (AL-NH₂@Fe₃O₄-Ce) possessing a high affinity to phosphate and easily separated from aqueous solutions was developed in this work. The characterization results revealed that Fe and Ce elements have been doped into the aminated lignin successfully. Batch experiment results convinced that the maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of AL-NH₂@Fe₃O₄-Ce was 183.72 mg P/g at pH = 3, which was roughly 4.5 times greater than aminated lignin and 8.5 times greater than cerium oxide, respectively. The adsorption isotherm was fitted well by the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics was in line with the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption thermodynamics indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous and naturally exothermic. Additionally, AL-NH₂@Fe₃O₄-Ce exhibited high selectivity towards phosphate over common coexisting anions (Cl^-, NO₃^-, HCO₃^-, SO₄^2- and F^-). After five consecutive cycles, the adsorption performance of AL-NH₂@Fe₃O₄-Ce decreased by only 16% compared with the fresh adsorbent, indicating that AL-NH₂@Fe₃O₄-Ce exhibited excellent recycling ability. The results of XPS analysis and batch experiments showed that the possible mechanisms were electrostatic attraction and inner-sphere complexation. The tailored interfacial chemistry affinity to phosphate as well as endowed magnetic property reveled AL-NH₂@Fe₃O₄-Ce could be adopted as an up and coming adsorbent in phosphate removal process.

Emerging novel polymeric adsorbents for removing dyes from wastewater: A comprehensive review and comparison with other adsorbents

Dye molecules are one of the most hazardous compounds for human and animal health and the excess intake of these materials can create toxic impacts. Several studies show the practicality of the adsorption process for dye uptake from wastewaters. In recent years, various adsorbents were used to be efficient in this process. Among all, polymeric adsorbents demonstrate great applicability in different environmental conditions and attract many researchers to work on them, although there is not enough reliable and precise information regarding these adsorbents. This study aims to investigate some influential parameters such as their type, physical properties, experimental conditions, their capacity, and further modeling along with a comparison with non-polymeric adsorbents. The influence of the main factors of adsorption capacity was studied and the dominant mechanism is explained extensively.
