Synthesis of a new thiophenol-thiophene polymer for the removal of mercury from wastewater and liquid hydrocarbons

Highly reusable bentonite clay@biochar@Fe3O4 nanocomposite for Hg(II) removal from synthetic and real wastewater

The present research investigates the performance of bentonite clay@biochar@Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite in removing mercury ions (Hg²⁺) from aqueous media. The physical and structural properties of bentonite clay@biochar@Fe₃O₄ were determined using Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and Raman analyses. The highest uptake efficiency of Hg²⁺ was obtained at pH 6, Hg²⁺ concentration of 10 mg/L, contact time of 80 min, and the composite dose of 1.5 g/L. Under these conditions, the uptake efficiency of bentonite clay@biochar@Fe₃O₄ and bentonite clay was obtained as 98.78% and 97.67%, respectively, which are remarkable values. Also, the q_max values in Hg²⁺ removal using bentonite clay@biochar@Fe₃O₄ and bentonite clay were obtained as 66.66 and 60.98 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the uptake process of Hg²⁺ ions using bentonite clay@biochar@Fe₃O₄ nanocomposite and bentonite was spontaneous, physical, favorable, and exothermic. Besides, the impact of various divalent ions such as Co²⁺, Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Zn²⁺ on the removal efficiency of Hg²⁺ was studied. The results showed that Co²⁺ and Zn²⁺ ions have the highest and lowest interference effect in Hg²⁺ removal, respectively. Also, the reusability of both adsorbents showed that they have high stability and can be used for at least 5 cycles with high uptake efficiency. Additionally, the removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD₅), Hg²⁺, As³⁺, and As⁵⁺ from real wastewater using bentonite clay@biochar@Fe₃O₄ was obtained as 37.5%, 28.9%, 65%, 60.5%, and 50%, respectively, indicating its remarkable performance.

Mechanism and controlling factors on rapid methylmercury degradation by ligand-enhanced Fenton-like reaction at circumneutral pH

Methylmercury (MeHg), derived from industrial processes and microbial methylation, is still a worldwide environmental concern. A rapid and efficient strategy is necessary for MeHg degradation in waste and environmental waters. Here, we provide a new method with ligand-enhanced Fenton-like reaction to rapidly degrade MeHg under neutral pH. Three common chelating ligands were selected (nitriloacetic acid (NTA), citrate, and ethylenediaminetetraacetic disodium (EDTA)) to promote the Fenton-like reaction and degradation of MeHg. Results showed that MeHg can be rapidly degraded, with the following efficiency sequence: EDTA > NTA > citrate. Scavenger addition demonstrated that hydroxyl radical (^▪OH), superoxide radical (O₂^▪-), and ferryl (Fe^ⅣO²⁺) were involved in MeHg degradation, and their relative contributions highly depended on ligand type. Degradation product and total Hg analysis suggested that Hg(Ⅱ) and Hg⁰ were generated with the demethylation of MeHg. Further, environmental factors, including initial pH, organic complexation (natural organic matter and cysteine), and inorganic ions (chloride and bicarbonate) on MeHg degradation, were investigated in NTA-enhanced system. Finally, rapid MeHg degradation was validated for MeHg-spiked waste and environmental waters. This study provided a simple and efficient strategy for MeHg remediation in contaminated waters, which is also helpful for understanding its degradation in the natural environment.

A spectroscopic probe with FRET-ICT feature for thiophenol monitoring in real water samples

Thiophenol (PhSH) is widely used in industry, however, it is extremely harmful to the environment and human health due to its high toxicity. In this work, we developed a new FRET-ICT-based ratiometric fluorescent and colorimetric probe (DMNP) for detecting PhSH. DMNP had an ultrahigh energy transfer efficiency (99.7%) and clear spacing of two emission peaks (133 nm). DMNP achieved a fast response to PhSH and exhibited drastic enhancement (over 2100 folds) of the fluorescence intensity ratio upon addition of PhSH. DMNP showed good linear response in the PhSH concentration ranges of 0.5-13 μM and 17.0-22.0 μM. Meanwhile, DMNP could also be applied to monitor PhSH in a variety of real water samples.

A Simple but Effective Fluorescent Probe for the Detection of 4-Methylthiophenol

In this paper, a fluorescent probe (QFR) for the detective work of 4-methylthiophenol was successfully synthesized with a simple but highly effective probe structure. In the buffer solution (V(ACN): V(PBS) = 3:7), by observing the response of the probe after the fluorescence was turned on, we concluded that the probe had good characteristics such as high selectivity, low detection limit (116 nM), and fast response speed (20 min). In addition, the probe was a rare fluorescent probe that detected 4-methylthiophenol but did not respond to thiophenol. Fluorescence intensity was linearly related to 4-methylthiophenol concentration in the range of 0 to 2 equivalents (0-10 μM). The probe demonstrated good results in the determination of the recovery rate (92.28% to 110.1%) of actual water samples, and has great potential in environmental monitoring.

Thioether-functionalized porphyrin-based polymers for Hg2+ efficient removal in aqueous solution

In this paper, thioether-functionalized porphyrin-based polymers (TPPs) were constructed according to two different "bottom-up" and "top-down" strategies and they were applied for Hg²⁺ capture in aqueous solution. TPP1, which was constructed by one-step polycondensation of 2,5-bis(methylthio) terephthalaldehyde (BMTA) with pyrrole according to the "bottom-up" strategy, owned high Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area (S_BET, 554 m²/g), pore volume (V_total, 0.32 cm³/g), and S content (16.8%), resulting in high Hg²⁺ capture (913 mg/g) with high removal efficiency (> 99%). The adsorption mechanism clarified that the strong coordination between the S species and Hg²⁺ was the main driving force. In comparison, TPP2 and TPP3 were fabricated by the thioether functionalization of the porphyrin-based polymers according to the "top-down" strategy. They showed much lower S_BET, V_total, and S content for the reason that the post-functionalization process greatly blocked the pores and the functional sites were hardly fully post-functionalized, resulting in much lower Hg²⁺ capture (555 mg/g and 609 mg/g, respectively). This work reveals the advantage of the "bottom-up" strategy for the construction of the thioether-functionalized polymers and it offers the guidance for the construction of some other thioether-functionalized polymers.

Separation of Mercury(II) from Industrial Wastewater through Polymer Inclusion Membranes with Calix[4]pyrrole Derivative

Polymer membranes with immobilized ligands are encouraging alternatives for the removal of toxic metal ions from aquatic waste streams, including industrial wastewater, in view of their high selectivity, stability, removal efficacy and low energy demands. In this study, polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) based on cellulose triacetate, with a calix[4]pyrrole derivative as an ion carrier, were tested for their capability to dispose mercury (Hg(II)) ions from industrial wastewater. The impacts were assessed relative to carrier content, the quantity of plasticizer in the membrane, the hydrocholoric acid concentration in the source phase, and the character of the receiving phase on the performance of Hg(II) elimination. Optimally designed PIMs could be an interesting option for the industrial wastewater treatment due to the high removal efficiency of Hg(II) and great repeatability.

Crystal Packing-Driven Selective Hg(II) Ion Sensing Using Thiazolothiazole-Based Water-Stable Zinc Metal-Organic Framework

A soft acid-soft base interaction is highly predictable. However, we demonstrate how the crystal packing of the newly synthesized zinc framework [Zn₂(5-AIA)₂(DPTTZ)]·DMF (where 5-AIA = 5-aminoisophthalic acid, DPTTZ = N,N'-di(4-pyridyl)thiazolo-[5,4-d]thiazole, DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide) directs an unexpected interaction between the soft acid Hg(II) and the hard base oxygen instead of having a soft center like nitrogen and sulfur in the system attributed to a strong solvent interaction and a favorable ionic radius of Hg(II) ion for oxygen chelation. This engenders selective Hg(II) ion sensing through a "turn-off" emission quenching in water (limit of detection = (2.174 ± 0.06) × 10^-9 M) along with natural water resources and in a broad pH range. A quantum-chemical calculation elucidates the turn-off quenching mechanism and favorable Hg(II) interaction with encompassed oxygen atoms inside the framework.

A new turn-on fluorescent probe for sensing 4-methylbenzenethiol in real water samples

A new fluorescent probe (MBT) for the detection of 4-methylbenzenethiol (p-MePhSH) was developed by using 4-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-3-methoxyphenol as the fluorophore and 2,4-dinitrophenyl ether as the sensing moiety. Probe MBT displayed good selectivity toward p-MePhSH in DMSO/PBS buffer (5/5, v/v) solution and anti-interference over other competitive species via nucleophilic aromatic substitution. The fluorescence intensities of the probe responded p-MePhSH showed a 22-fold enhancement and good linearity with p-MePhSH concentration collected in the range of 0-15 μM. Moreover, the probe is sensitive to p-MePhSH and the limit of detection is 45 nM. The sensing mechanism of probe MBT was verified by high-resolution mass spectrometry and fluorescence lifetime. Furthermore, the probe was used to the detection of p-MePhSH in real water samples.

Electrochemical aptasensor based on gold modified thiol graphene as sensing platform and gold-palladium modified zirconium metal-organic frameworks nanozyme as signal enhancer for ultrasensitive detection of mercury ions

Gold modified thiol graphene (Au@HS-rGO) was prepared and applied as sensing platform for constructing the electrochemical aptasensor. While gold-palladium modified zirconium metal-organic frameworks (AuPd@UiO-67) nanozyme was employed as signal enhancer for detecting mercury ions (Hg²⁺) sensitively. Herein, gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) were modified on HS-rGO to form the thin Au@HS-rGO layer. Then the substrate strand (Apt1) was modified on the platform through Au-S bond. The signal strand (Apt2) was further decorated on the platform in the presence of Hg²⁺. Herein, the Apt2 was labeled with AuPd@UiO-67 nanozyme, which exhibited catalase-like properties to catalyze H₂O₂, thereby generating the electrical signal. With the concentration of Hg²⁺ increased, the amount of modified Apt2-AuPd@UiO-67 increased, leading to the rise of current response. Since the current responses were linear with concentration of Hg²⁺, the detection of Hg²⁺ can be achieved. Under the optimum conditions, the prepared electrochemical aptasensor exhibited wide linear range from 1.0 nmol/L to 1.0 mmol/L, along with a low detection limit of 0.16 nmol/L. Moreover, the electrochemical aptasensor showed excellent selectivity, reproducibility and stability, together with superior performance in actual water sample analysis. Therefore, this proposed electrochemical aptasensor may have promising applications and provide references for environmental monitoring and management.

Preparation, characterization and application of CS@PDA@Fe3O4 nanocomposite as a new magnetic nano-adsorber for the removal of metals and dyes in wastewater

This study aimed to develop a novel magnetic chitosan/dopamine/Fe₃O₄ nano-adsorber (CS@PDA@Fe₃O₄) for the removal of heavy metal ions and organic dye molecules from aqueous solution. CS@PDA@Fe₃O₄ was prepared by surface modification of PDA/Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles with chitosan using IPTES as the cross-linker. The surface structure, composition, and properties of the CS@PDA@Fe₃O₄ nano-adsorber were characterized by elemental (EDS), spectroscopic (XRD, XPS, and FT-IR), magnetic intensity (VSM), surface and morphological (TEM and SEM) analyses. In order to study its adsorption behavior, equilibrium and kinetics studies were carried out through batch experiments. Additionally, the influences of the pH value, initial concentration, adsorbent dose, and contact time were also evaluated. The CS@PDA@Fe₃O₄ nano-adsorber exhibited high adsorption capacity especially for Cu(ii), with a maximum adsorption capacity of 419.6 mg g^-1. The experimental data were well described by the Langmuir isotherm kinetic models.

Tetraphenylethene-based fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission behavior for Hg2+ detection and its application

A tetraphenylethene (TPE) derivative was designed and synthesized upon conjugation with bis(thiophen-2-ylmethyl) amine (BTA) containing a mercury-binding moiety and further characterized by using Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), LC-MS, UV-Vis, and fluorescence spectroscopic methods. The resulting TPE-BTA exhibited comprehensive aggregation-induced emission while expressing a high quantum yield and emission intensity at 70% water fraction. The probe exhibited a good photochromic effect with a Stokes shift of 178 nm, and the emission intensity at 550 nm increased considerably with the color turning from dark green to bright green under a UV lamp upon the addition of 5 μM Hg²⁺. The lowest-energy conformation of the probe showed that two thiophene rings were perpendicular to the phenyl ring, while two BTA molecules were situated in a staggered form to each other. The sulfur and nitrogen atoms present in TPE-BTA were coordinated to the Hg²⁺ ion, and these binding sites were confirmed by the NMR parameters, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy signals, and structural calculations. The binding of Hg²⁺ to TPE-BTA was believed to restrict the intramolecular motion of TPE-BTA, thus inducing it to shine brighter according to the unique aggregation-induced emission effect. The concentration of Hg²⁺ was determined based on the enhancement of the emission intensity, and the present probe showed an extremely high sensitivity with a limit of detection of 10.5 nM. Furthermore, TPE-BTA enabled selective detection of Hg²⁺ even in the presence of a 1000-fold excess of other interfering metal ions. The proposed method was successfully employed to determine Hg²⁺ in living HeLa cells and real water samples.
