Colloidal monolayers with cell-like tessellations via interface assisted evaporative assembly

Contact Angle Modulation: In Situ Polymer Deposition during Sessile Drop Evaporation

The drying kinetics of a sessile drop on a solid surface are a widely studied phenomenon because of their relevance to various fields such as coating, printing, medical diagnostics, sensing, and microfluidic technology. Typically, the drop undergoes drying either at a constant contact radius (R) with a decrease in the three-phase contact angle or at a constant contact angle (θ) with a reduction in the radius with time. These two drying modes are referred to as CCR and CCA, respectively. It is not uncommon where both R and θ may decrease during drying, especially in the penultimate stage of drying. In this work, we report a scenario wherein the θ increases while R decreases during the drying process of an aqueous polymer solution on a high surface energy substrate. This behavior is observed across different polymer systems (such as poly(ethylene oxide) and polyvinyl pyrrolidine), varying molecular weights, and polymer concentrations. As the drop dries, the polymer gets deposited at the three-phase contact line, thus reducing the surface energy of the substrate and leading to an increase in the contact angle. The drop responds by attempting to reach a new equilibrium contact angle through slipping. The temporal increase in contact angle follows a power law scaling behavior. This study demonstrates an in situ modulation of contact angle facilitated by evaporation and polymer deposition, showcasing unconventional drying dynamics.

Depletion zone in two-dimensional deposits of soft microgel particles

HYPOTHESIS

Microgels are a class of model soft colloids that act like surfactants due to their amphiphilicity and are spontaneously adsorbed to the fluid-air interface. Here, we exploit the surfactant-like characteristics of microgels to generate Marangoni stress-induced fluid flow at the surface of a drop containing soft colloids. This Marangoni flow combined with the well-known capillary flow that arises during the evaporation of a drop placed on a solid surface, leads to the formation of a novel two-dimensional deposit of particles with distinct depletion zones at its edge.

EXPERIMENTS

The evaporation experiments using sessile and pendant drops containing microgel particles were carried out, and the microstructure of the final particulate deposits were recorded. The kinetics of the formation of the depletion zone and its width is studied by tracking the time evolution of the microgel particle monolayer adsorbed to the interface using in situ video microscopy.

FINDINGS

The experiments reveal that the depletion zone width linearly increases with droplet volume. Interestingly, the depletion zone width is larger for drops evaporated in pendant configuration than the sessile drops, which is corroborated by considering the gravitational forces exerted on the microgel assembly on the fluid-air interface. The fluid flows arising from Marangoni stresses and the effect of gravity provide novel ways to manipulate the self-assembly of two-dimensional layers of soft colloids.

Fluid interface-assisted assembly of soft microgels: recent developments for structures beyond hexagonal packing

Microgels adsorb to air/water and oil/water interfaces - a process driven by a significant reduction in interfacial tension. Depending on the available interface area per microgel, strong lateral deformation can be observed. Typically, hexagonally ordered structures appear spontaneously upon contact of the microgel shells. Transfer from the interface to solid substrates gives access to macroscopically sized microgel monolayers that are interesting for photonic and plasmonic studies as well as colloid-based lithography, for example. Significant efforts have been made to understand the phase behavior of microgels at different interfaces and to explore the available parameter space for achieving complex tessellations. In this review, we will discuss the most recent developments in the realization of microgel monolayers with structures beyond hexagonal packing.

From Chaos to Ordering: New Studies in the Shannon Entropy of 2D Patterns

Properties of the Voronoi tessellations arising from random 2D distribution points are reported. We applied an iterative procedure to the Voronoi diagrams generated by a set of points randomly placed on the plane. The procedure implied dividing the edges of Voronoi cells into equal or random parts. The dividing points were then used to construct the following Voronoi diagram. Repeating this procedure led to a surprising effect of the positional ordering of Voronoi cells, reminiscent of the formation of lamellae and spherulites in linear semi-crystalline polymers and metallic glasses. Thus, we can conclude that by applying even a simple set of rules to a random set of seeds, we can introduce order into an initially disordered system. At the same time, the Shannon (Voronoi) entropy showed a tendency to attain values that are typical for completely random patterns; thus, the Shannon (Voronoi) entropy does not distinguish the short-range ordering. The Shannon entropy and the continuous measure of symmetry of the patterns demonstrated the distinct asymptotic behavior, while approaching the close saturation values with the increase in the number of iteration steps. The Shannon entropy grew with the number of iterations, whereas the continuous measure of symmetry of the same patterns demonstrated the opposite asymptotic behavior. The Shannon (Voronoi) entropy is not an unambiguous measure of order in the 2D patterns. The more symmetrical patterns may demonstrate the higher values of the Shannon entropy.

Evaporative self-assembly of soft colloidal monolayers: the role of particle softness

We investigate the sessile drop evaporation aided self-assembly of microgel particles by varying their softness. Evaporation of sessile drops containing amphiphilic microgel particles at suitable concentrations results in uniform monolayer deposits that span the entire drop area. At lower concentrations, the deposits are in the form of monolayer coffee rings whose width scales with particle concentration. Using softer microgels synthesised with a lower quantity of crosslinker, we show that the monolayer coffee rings do not form at low particle concentrations. The microgels adsorbed at the interface deform, and the extent of deformation depends on the softness of the microgels as well as their concentration at the interface. Upon complete evaporation of the solvent, the microgel-laden interface is transferred to the substrate. The final deposit shows hexagonal particle arrays where the interparticle separation increases with increasing microgel softness and decreases with particle concentration in the drop. Further insight into the role of microgel softness in the microstructure of the particulate deposits is obtained by measuring the viscoelasticity of the particle-laden interface. Interestingly, the interface loaded with lesser crosslinked microgels exhibits viscoelastic nature even at lower particle concentrations, whereas the higher crosslinked microgels show viscous behaviour.
