A novel strategy for improving performance of lithium-oxygen batteries

Efficient Biorenewable Membranes in Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Lithium-oxygen batteries, with their very high energy density (3500 Wh kg-1), could represent a real breakthrough in the envisioned strategies towards more efficient energy storage solutions for a less and less carbonated energy mix. However, the problems associated with this technology are numerous. A first one is linked to the high reactivity of the lithium metal anode, while a second one is linked to the highly oxidative environment created by the cell's O2 saturation. Keeping in mind the necessity for greener materials in future energy storage solutions, in this work an innovative lithium protective membrane is prepared based on chitosan, a polysaccharide obtained from the deacetylation reaction of chitin. Chitosan was methacrylated through a simple, one-step reaction in water and then cross-linked by UV-induced radical polymerization. The obtained membranes were successively activated in liquid electrolyte and used as a lithium protection layer. The cells prepared with protected lithium were able to reach a higher full discharge capacity, and the chitosan's ability to slow down degradation processes was verified by post-mortem analyses. Moreover, in long cycling conditions, the protected lithium cell performed more than 40 cycles at 0.1 mA cm-2, at a fixed capacity of 0.5 mAh cm-2, retaining 100% coulombic efficiency, which is more than twice the lifespan of the bare lithium cell.

Electrons and phonons of the discharge products in the lithium-oxygen and lithium-sulfur batteries from first-principles calculations

Batteries have become a ubiquitous daily necessity, which are popularly applied to mobile phones and electric vehicles according to their size. Improving the battery cycle life and storage is important, but unexpected discharge products still restrict the upper limit of batter performance such as Li₂O₂, LiO₂, and Li₂S. In this study, we calculated electrons and phonons presenting the basic energy states in crystal using the first-principles calculations. The Li₂O₂ and Li₂S are almost insulating due to the wide bandgap from their electronic structure, and doped-active p-orbital may be one of the pathways to improve crystal conduction due to the tendency of the density of states. The LiO₂ is metallic, and the electronic structure and phonons show that the discharge products have an ionic feature. In addition, the ionic crystal can produce a larger DC permittivity because it possesses macroscopic polarisation. For Li₂O₂ and Li₂S, the Raman peak of the O-O bonding is strong, while the Raman peak of the S-ion is very weak. The enhanced Raman peak of the S-ion presents a possibility to prevent the shuttle effect in Li-S batteries.

Superdry poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) coating on a lithium anode as a protective layer and separator for a high-performance lithium-oxygen battery

In this study, a dense polyvinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene (PVDF-HFP) coating is fabricated on a lithium (Li) anode sheet, which acts as a synergistic protective layer and electrolyte separator for Li-oxygen (Li-O₂) batteries. This thin coating is dried through slow solvent evaporation and vacuum drying methods. The solvent-free, dense PVDF-HFP coating has a thickness of 45 µm and can absorb 62% of electrolyte. The battery containing the PVDF-HFP coating demonstrates a maximum peak power density of 3 mW cm^-2, significantly higher than that of the battery with the PVDF coating (0.8 mW cm^-2) but lower than that without coating (equipped with a commercial glass fiber separator, 7.3 mW cm^-2). However, the PVDF-HFP coating enables the Li-O₂ battery to reach a capacity of 4400 mA h g^-1, much higher than that without the coating (glass fiber separator, 850 mA h g^-1). The symmetric Li-Li cells further confirm steady and low overpotentials using the anode coating at a high current density of 1.0 mA cm^-2, indicating stable Li plating/stripping process. The PVDF-HFP-coated battery has a longer cycling lifetime (1700 h) than those with the PVDF coating (120 h) and a glass fiber separator (670 h). The Raman spectra show that there are lithium compounds (mainly lithium hydroxide) and residual PVDF-HFP on the aged anode surface. The dense PVDF-HFP coating on the Li anode plays dual roles: it creates a strong protective layer for stabilizing the solid-electrolyte interface (in the solid phase), and acts as a separator for modulating the Li metal deposition and stripping behaviors in liquid electrolyte.

A Facile Pre-Lithiated Strategy towards High-Performance Li2Se-LiTiO2 Composite Cathode for Li-Se Batteries

Conventional lithium-ion batteries with a limited energy density are unable to assume the responsibility of energy-structure innovation. Lithium-selenium (Li-Se) batteries are considered to be the next generation energy storage devices since Se cathodes have high volumetric energy density. However, the shuttle effect and volume expansion of Se cathodes severely restrict the commercialization of Li-Se batteries. Herein, a facile solid-phase synthesis method is successfully developed to fabricate novel pre-lithiated Li2Se-LiTiO2 composite cathode materials. Impressively, the rationally designed Li2Se-LiTiO2 composites demonstrate significantly enhanced electrochemical performance. On the one hand, the overpotential of Li2Se-LiTiO2 cathode extremely decreases from 2.93 V to 2.15 V. On the other hand, the specific discharge capacity of Li2Se-LiTiO2 cathode is two times higher than that of Li2Se. Such enhancement is mainly accounted to the emergence of oxygen vacancies during the conversion of Ti4+ into Ti3+, as well as the strong chemisorption of LiTiO2 particles for polyselenides. This facile pre-lithiated strategy underscores the potential importance of embedding Li into Se for boosting electrochemical performance of Se cathode, which is highly expected for high-performance Li-Se batteries to cover a wide range of practical applications.
