N and Sn Co-Doped hematite photoanodes for efficient solar water oxidation

Cobalt-doped double-layer α-Fe2O3 nanorod arrays for enhanced photoelectrochemical reduction of Cr(VI)

Element doping is an important method for improving the performance levels of photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells. Nevertheless, to date, the PEC conversion efficiency and photocurrent characteristics of the available photoanodes remain very low. In this study, cobalt (Co) was selectively doped into the bottom and/or top layers of double-layered α-Fe₂O₃ nanorod arrays grown on conductive transparent substrates (F:SnO₂, FTO) via a two-step hydrothermal method; this process was performed to enhance the charge transfer ability and thus significantly improve the PEC performance. The light response capabilities of all α-Fe₂O₃ films were evaluated by an electrochemical workstation under dark or visible light irradiation conditions. The sample of Co doped in the bottom layer exhibited a high photoelectrochemical performance, achieving a current density of 1.37 mA/cm² at + 1.0 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE); additionally, the sample exhibited a photoelectric synergistic ability to reduce Cr(VI) in an aqueous solution, with 84.85% reduction in 180 min. Under the influence of the electric field inside the double-layer electrode, the photoexcited electrons and holes are transferred to the surfaces of the FTO substrate and the photoanode, increasing the current density and enhancing Cr(VI) reduction. The results of this study offer an alternative approach for designing novel photoanodes with improved PEC performance levels by engineering the electron density distribution and band structure for efficient carrier separation; the results may provide new solutions in heavy metal reduction and contaminant degradation projects.

Revealing the Essential Role of Iron Phosphide and its Surface-Evolved Species in the Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation by Gd-Doped Hematite Photoanode

Phosphates are easily derived from transition metal phosphides under natural conditions, and the real roles of these two in catalytic reactions are not yet clear. Here, a multiphase FeP/Gd-Fe₂ O₃ shell-core structure photoanode was constructed and explored regarding the real role of FeP and its surface-reconstructed iron phosphate (Fe-Pi) in photoelectrochemical water oxidation. The FeP/Gd-Fe₂ O₃ photoanode exhibited an excellent photocurrent density of 2.56 mA cm^-2 at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode, up to 4 times greater than those of the pristine α-Fe₂ O₃ (0.64 mA cm^-2 ). Detailed studies showed that FeP could act as a photosensitizer to enhance light absorption and as a conductive layer to accelerate charge transfer. The FeP significantly enhanced the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency of the photoanode and improved the electron transition within the photoanode. Naturally evolved Fe-Pi on the surface provided more active sites for water oxidation. They effectively passivated the surface capture state and synergistically inhibited the electron-hole recombination. Moreover, the in-situ constructed multiphase catalyst had a smaller interfacial contact resistance than the intentionally decorative cocatalyst. This work provides new insight into the understanding of the essential role of transition metal phosphides and their surface-reconstructed species in catalytic reactions.

Electrochemical Polymerization Induced Chirality Fixation of Crystalline Pillararene-Based Polymer and Its Application in Interfacial Chiral Sensing

A new strategy has been developed for the direct chirality fixation, which is induced by electrochemical polymerization, of macrocyclic hosts pillar[5]arene. Taking advantage of electrochemical polymerization, thiophene-modified pillar[5]arene monomers (Th-P[5]A) have been regularly arranged under the action of an electric field to form chiral nanofiber-like crystalline pillar[5]arene-based polymers (poly-Th-P[5]A), showing a significant circular dichroism (CD) signal. With the active photochemical properties, poly-Th-P[5]A is first used as a photoelectrochemical (PEC) chiral sensor for the identification and determination of l- and d-ascorbic acid (l-AA, d-AA) without adding any extra photoactive probes. Importantly, the chiral recognition between poly-Th-P[5]A and l-AA also triggers a polarity conversion for the photocurrent of the polymer, and it greatly results in a broad chiral detection range for l-AA, crossing 6 orders of magnitude. This work provides a promotional strategy for building a PEC chiral recognition platform based on pillararenes.

Ordered Ti-doped FeVO4 nanoblock photoanode with improved charge properties for efficient solar water splitting

Highly photoactive FeVO₄ photoanodes with ordered nanoblock morphology and uniform Ti-doping were prepared by drop-casting mixed Ti and V precursors onto FeOOH nanorod films and following an annealing process. The results indicate that Ti⁴⁺ is uniformly doped into the FeVO₄ lattice by substituting V⁵⁺ and provides an increased number of O₂^- vacancies. The optimized film thickness and doping level are 620 nm and 0.3%, respectively. Compared to the undoped sample, the Ti-doped photoanode showed ~ 219% enhancement in photocurrent at 1.0 V vs Ag/AgCl under back illumination of AM 1.5, reaching a state-of-the-art value of ~ 1.47 mA cm^-2, and also achieved stable and efficient overall water splitting activity with evolution rates of 28.3 and 14.1 μmol cm^-2h^-1 for H₂ and O₂, respectively. The excellent PEC performance could be attributed to the remarkably enhanced charge carrier concentration and conductivity, and the facilitated charge transfer kinetics across the semiconductor/electrolyte interface, as a result of Ti-doping.
