Fabrication, characterization and photoelectrochemical properties of CdS/CdSe nanofilm co-sensitized ZnO nanorod arrays on Zn foil substrate

3D-ordered porous CdS/AgI/ZnO nanostructures for high-performance photoelectrochemical water splitting

3D-ordered porous CdS/AgI/ZnO nanostructures were designed to perform as high-performance photoelectrodes for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting applications. They rely on the advantages of an extremely large active surface area, high absorption capacity in the visible-light region, fast carrier separation and transportation caused by the intrinsic ladder-like band arrangement. These nanostructures were fabricated by employing a three-stage experiment in a sequence of hard mold-assisted electrochemical deposition, wet chemical method and deposition-precipitation. First, 3D-ordered ZnO nanostructures were electrochemically deposited using a polystyrene film as the sacrificed template. AgI nanoparticles were then decorated on the interfacial ZnO nanostructures by deposition-precipitation. Finally, these binary AgI/ZnO nanoporous networks were thoroughly wet-chemically coated with a CdS film to form a so-called 'ternary interfacial CdS/AgI/ZnO nanostructures'. The PEC water-splitting properties of the fabricated 3D nanostructures were systematically studied and compared. As a result, the highest efficiency of the fabricated 3D-ordered porous CdS/AgI/ZnO measured under the irradiation of solar simulation is about 5.2%, which is relatively 1.5, 3.5 and 11.3 times greater than that of the corresponding CdS/ZnO (3,4%), AgI/ZnO (1.5%) and pristine porous ZnO (0.46%) photoelectrodes, respectively. The significant improvement in the PEC activity is attributed to the enhanced charge separation and transport of ternary photoelectrodes caused by an unconventional ladder-like band arrangement formed between interfacial CdS-AgI-ZnO. Our study provides a promising strategy for developing such ternary photoelectrode generation that possesses higher stability and efficiency towards water-splitting processes.

Porous Zn1-xCdxSe/ZnO Nanorod Photoanode Fabricated from ZnO Building Blocks Grown on Zn Foil for Photoelectrochemical Solar Hydrogen Production

Solar energy is the most promising, efficient, environmentally friendly energy source with the potential to meet global demand due to its non-polluting nature. Herein, a porous Zn1-xCdxSe/ZnO nanorod (NR) heterojunction was synthesized by hydrothermal and low-temperature solvothermal methods. First, the ZnO NR was grown on a Zinc foil, and an inorganic-organic hybrid ZnSe(en)0.5 material was developed by the low-temperature solvothermal method. In this work, the ZnO NR acted as a base material and a building block for the growth of ZnSe(en)0.5. Moreover, after the solvothermal process, the reduced Se2- reacts with the ZnO NR and forms inorganic-organic hybrid ZnSe(en)0.5. After the selenization process, the obtained material shows a red brick color due to the absorbance of excessive Se metal particles during the solvothermal process. Furthermore, in order to enhance the photoelectrochemical properties, the Cd2+ ion exchange method was applied at various temperatures (140, 160, and 180 °C for 3 h) to produce a precursor material to a porous Zn1-xCdxSe/ZnO NR nanostructure. The optimum Zn1-xCdxSe/ZnO NR-160 photoanode showed a high photocurrent density of 7.8 mA·cm-2 at -0.5 V vs. Ag/AgCl with a hydrogen evolution rate of 199 μmol·cm-2/3 h. The improved photocurrent performance was attributed to effective light absorption and prolonged recombination lifetime.

Review of Recent Developments in the Fabrication of ZnO/CdS Heterostructure Photocatalysts for Degradation of Organic Pollutants and Hydrogen Production

Researchers have recently paid a lot of attention to semiconductor photocatalysts, especially ZnO-based heterostructures. Due to its availability, robustness, and biocompatibility, ZnO is a widely researched material in the fields of photocatalysis and energy storage. It is also environmentally beneficial. However, the wide bandgap energy and quick recombination of the photoinduced electron-hole pairs of ZnO limit its practical utility. To address these issues, many techniques have been used, such as the doping of metal ions and the creation of binary or ternary composites. Recent studies showed that ZnO/CdS heterostructures outperformed bare ZnO and CdS nanostructures in terms of photocatalytic performance when exposed to visible light. This review largely concentrated on the ZnO/CdS heterostructure production process and its possible applications including the degradation of organic pollutants and hydrogen evaluation. The importance of synthesis techniques such as bandgap engineering and controlled morphology was highlighted. In addition, the prospective uses of ZnO/CdS heterostructures in the realm of photocatalysis and the conceivable photodegradation mechanism were examined. Lastly, ZnO/CdS heterostructures' challenges and prospects for the future have been discussed.

Multifunctional Photoelectrochemical Biosensor Based on ZnIn2S4/ZnS QDs@Au-Ag-Reversed Photocurrent of Cu-Metal-Organic Framework Coupled with CRISPR/Cas-12a-Shearing for Assay of Dual Targets

False positives and negatives in bioanalytical assays remain a persistent problem. Herein, a multifunctional photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor based on ZnIn₂S₄ (ZIS)/ZnS quantum dots (QDs)@Au-Ag-reversed photocurrent of Cu-metal-organic framework (MOF) coupled with CRISPR/Cas-12a-shearing was innovatively developed for assay of dual targets. First, Cu-MOF as a good PEC material shows cathodic photocurrent. Then, numerous ZIS/ZnS QDs were assembled to the Au-Ag nanoparticles (NPs) to prepare a stable and highly amplified signal probe, which can just match the energy level of Cu-MOFs and realized the polarity-reversed photocurrent of Cu-MOF for the first time. As the empty-core nanostructure of Au-Ag NPs has a high specific surface area and low material density, the bimetallic nanocrystal can much increase the reaction rate and improve the redox efficiency. When target CEA-produced cDNA opened the hairpin DNA (HP1 DNA) on the electrode, the ZIS/ZnS QDs@Au-Ag signal probe was conjugated to the electrode via DNA hybridization, achieving a significantly reversed PEC current for CEA detection. Moreover, the specific binding of kanamycin/aptamer generated the acDNA (activator), which can activate the trans-cleavage activity of the CRISPR-CAS12a system on ssDNA, so the signal probe was sheared and caused the obvious decrease of PEC signal for kanamycin detection. The newly developed ZIS/ZnS QDs@Au-Ag NPs displayed excellent PEC properties and reversed photocurrent to MOF and were combined with the unique CRISPR-Cas12a system to achieve sensitive detection of dual targets, which can open a new polarity-reversed PEC sensing platform for rapid and accurate analysis of multiple targets and can effectively avoid false positives results in clinical testing.

Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of ZnO–CdS Composite Nanostructures towards the Degradation of Rhodamine B under Solar Light

A simple chemical precipitation route was utilized for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs), CdS NPs and ZnO–CdS nanocomposites (NCs). The synthesized nanostructures were examined for the crystal structure, morphology, optical properties and photodegradation activity of rhodamine B (RhB) dye. The ZnO–CdS NCs showed a mixed phase of hexagonal wurtzite structure for both ZnO NPs and CdS NPs. Pure ZnO NPs and CdS NPs possessed bandgaps of 3.2617 and 2.5261 eV, respectively. On the other hand, the composite nanostructures displayed a more narrow bandgap of 2.9796 eV than pure ZnO NPs. When compared to bare ZnO NPs, the PL intensity of near-band-edge emission at 381 nm was practically suppressed, suggesting a lower rate of photogenerated electron–hole (e−/h+) pairs recombination, resulting in enhanced photocatalytic activity. Under solar light, the composite nanostructures displayed a photodegradation efficiency of 98.16% towards of RhB dye. After four trials, the structural stability of ZnO–CdS NCs was verified.

Structural, photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical properties of porous ZnO nanosheets prepared by air cold plasma

Porous ZnO nanosheets with different thickness were prepared on zinc substrate by air cold plasma for photocatalytic degradation and photoelectrochemical water splitting. The ZnO nanosheets consisted of nanocrystallines with high-density oxygen-related defects characterized by the strong red luminescence. The UV absorption tended to be saturated as the thickness increased, and the saturation occurred at a thickness of about 2.3μm. Under UV irradiation (365 nm), the 2.3μm thick sample with higher content of oxygen vacancies and oxygen interstitials showed the highest photocatalytic activity (and higher than P25 TiO₂) in degradation of gaseous ethyl acetate. Due to the excellent UV-vis absorption ability and the effective transfer of photogenerated carriers, the ZnO nanosheets with thickness of 3.3μm showed a photocurrent density as high as 0.22 mA cm^-2at -0.28 V (versus Ag/AgCl) under AM 1.5 G 100 mW cm^-2.

Photoelectrochemical assay for the detection of circulating tumor cells based on aptamer-Ag2S nanocrystals for signal amplification

In this work, we developed a photoelectrochemical assay for circulating tumor cells (CTCs) detection based on hexagonal carbon-nitrogen tubes (HCNT) as visible light-sensitive materials. The MCF-7 cell was selected as the model CTC and was captured through specific recognition between epithelial cell adhesion molecules (EpCAM) on the cell surface and anti-EpCAM antibodies. Anti-EpCAM antibody-modified magnetic nanoparticles were used to enrich and separate MCF-7 cells from samples. The detection signal was amplified by Ag₂S nanocrystals, which can compete with HCNTs for absorbing visible light, leading to a decrease of photocurrent intensity. The linear range of the assay for MCF-7 cells is from 10 to 5000 cells mL^-1, with a detection limit of 3 cells mL^-1 (S/D = 3). The assay has good selectivity for MCF-7 detection over HeLa cells. The assay was successfully applied for the detection of MCF-7 in human whole blood, which indicates the potential for clinical application.

Topotactic and Self-Templated Fabrication of Zn1-xCdxSe Porous Nanobelt-ZnO Nanorod for Photoelectrochemical Hydrogen Production

Herein, we propose the topotactic and self-templated fabrication of Zn1-xCdxSe porous nanobelt-ZnO nanorod (termed as ZnCdSe/ZnO) photoelectrode via the cadmium (Cd2+) ion-exchange process on zinc (Zn) foil. Inorganic-organic hybrid ZnSe(en)0.5 nanobelt (NB) was synthesized on Zn foil by a facial solvothermal method at different temperatures of 140, 160, and 180 °C for 12 h. The interfacial properties and photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of inorganic-organic ZnSe(en)0.5 NB fabricated through the Cd2+ ion-exchange method at different time durations of 6, 12, 18, and 24 h at 140 °C were investigated. The TEM analysis results indicate that the inorganic-organic ZnSe(en)0.5 NB transformed into ZnCdSe and a self-assembled ZnO formed on the Zn foil. In particular Cd2+ ion temperature (140 °C/18 h), the optimized ZnCdSe/ZnO-(F) photoelectrode shows an excellent photocurrent density of 14 mA·cm-2 at 0 V vs Ag/AgCl with 219 μmol·cm-2 hydrogen gas evolution for 3 h under 1 sun illumination. The higher photocurrent value resulted from the optimum growth of ZnO, the formation of porous ZnCdSe, and the effective electrolyte penetration for electron-hole pair separation. The photoluminescence spectroscopy shows that the photoexcited charged carriers promoted a longer lifetime. Furthermore, we provide a full account of the possible charge-transfer mechanism during PEC hydrogen production.
