In situ growth of Z-scheme CuS/CuSCN heterojunction to passivate surface defects and enhance charge transport

Biomass derived reduced-graphene-oxide supported α-Fe2O3/ZnO S-scheme heterostructure: Robust photocatalytic wastewater remediation

The emergence of new diseases and the unplanned industrialization of cities have led to new diseases and the subsequent use of antibiotics. Hence the remediation of wastewater containing antibiotics and their severe pollution has raised serious concerns in recent years. Herein coral-shaped α-Fe₂O₃/ZnO/reduced graphene oxide (r-GO)-like carbon heterojunction in-situ were prepared from basil seed as a sustainable biomass resource and applied for the photodegradation of the oxytetracycline (OTC) as a typical antibiotic in a helical plug flow photoreactor (HPFPR) via persulfate activation under visible light irradiation. Spectroscopy and electrochemical results confirmed the tunable band structure and quick light absorption, superior charge separation and transfer, satisfactory charge carrier lifetime, and long-term stability for the prepared photocatalyst. The 98% degradation efficiency was achieved for OTC within 90 min fitted by a first-order kinetic model with the rate constant of 0.1248 min^-1. The finding proves that HPFPR exhibited a higher degradation rate of OTC by 2.3 times compared to the batch reactor. The 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model confirmed the outstanding performance of the HPFPR. Scavenging experiments integrated with mott Schottky and DRS results revealed that rGO intensifies the S-scheme charge carrier transfer and built-in electric field and reduces the recombination. Finally, this work has substantial potential for the in-situ synthesis of environmental-friendly and large-scale metal oxide heterojunctions in natural carbon supports as well as scale-up and gives novel insights from molecular and engineering points of view into the wastewater remediation processes and clean water production.

Chitosan-based molecularly imprinted photoelectric sensor with ZnO/Bi2O3/Bi2S3 sensing layer for thiamethoxam determination

A molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical sensor with high sensitivity and stable structure was constructed and applied to detect thiamethoxam pesticide. ZnO/Bi₂O₃/Bi₂S₃ heterojunction photoelectric material was formed on the fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode by seed layer growth, drip coating, and in situ ion exchange. A chitosan-imprinted polymer membrane was prepared using chitosan as the functional monomer, glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent, and thiamethoxam as the template molecule. The photoelectric material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analyses. The electron transfer mechanism of Z-type heterojunction was verified by ultraviolet-visible curve and Mott-Schottky curve. When thiamethoxam was re-adsorbed on the imprinted membrane, the current recorded at 0 V (vs. Ag/AgCl) was reduced because the thiamethoxam molecule blocked the electron transfer. The molecularly imprinted sensor exhibited a linear relationship to thiamethoxam concentration in the range from 7.0 × 10^-13 mol/L to 7.0 × 10^-10 mol/L and the detection limit was 3.32 × 10^-13 mol/L, which is lower than the values reported by other detection methods. Most pesticides, such as propoxur and isoprocarband carbaryl, do not interfere with the determination. The sensor also showed good practicability and suitability for the determination of trace thiamethoxam in environmental water and soil leaching solutions, with a recovery of 99.6-102.1% (RSD < 3.74%). A novel molecularly imprinted photoelectrochemical (MI-PEC) sensor with high sensitivity and selectivity for the determination of thiamethoxam (TMX) was developed. A Z-type heterojunction ZnO/Bi₂O₃/Bi₂S₃ photoelectric material was synthesized for the first time. The MI-PEC sensor was prepared with ZnO/Bi₂O₃/Bi₂S₃ as the sensitive material and MI membrane as the recognition element. The sensor exhibits an extremely sensitive response to thiamethoxam with a detection limit of 3.32 × 10^-13 mol/L due to the excellent photoelectrochemical properties of ZnO/Bi₂O₃/Bi₂S₃.

Molecular Imprinted Poly(2,5-benzimidazole)-Modified VO2-CuWO4 Homotype Heterojunction for Photoelectrochemical Dopamine Sensing

A photoactive molecularly imprinted poly(2,5-benzimidazole)-modified vanadium dioxide-cupric tungstate (VO₂-CuWO₄) as an efficient photosensitive n-n type-II heterojunction thin film was electrochemically deposited on Ti substrate for the selective and robust photoelectrochemical (PEC) bioanalysis of dopamine (DA). The optical absorption of n-VO₂/n-CuWO₄ type-II heterojunction was capably broadened toward the visible region, which permitted superior light-harvesting and robust carriers generation, separation, and transfer processes significantly enhancing the anodic photocurrent, as confirmed by a series of PEC analyses. Findings revealed that the as-prepared label-free MIP-PEC sensor can quantitatively monitor DA in a linear range of 1 nM to 200 μM with a detection limit of 0.15 nM. This MIP-PEC sensor showed robust selectivity under conditions with high concentrations of interfering substances, which can be recovered in the real samples of urine, cocoa chocolate, and diluted yogurt, indicating its promising potential applications in biological and food samples. This work not only featured the use of photoelectrically active MIP/VO₂-CuWO₄ for PEC detection of DA, but also provided a new horizon for the design and implementation of functional polymers/metal oxides heterojunction materials in the field of PEC sensors and biosensors.

N, S co-doped carbon quantum dots anchoring on copper-vacancy-rich Cu nanowires/Cu foam as the cathode in microbial fuel cells: Role of C-S-Cu active site

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts have been considered as one of the key components in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Heteroatom-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) derived from biomass have attracted wide attention due to their rich functional groups, excellent properties, and environmental friendliness. Herein, orange-peels-derived N, S co-doped carbon quantum dots (N, S-CQDs) are in-situ anchored on copper-vacancy-rich Cu nanowires/Cu foam (V-Cu NWs/CF), obtaining the N, S-CQDs/Cu₂O-Cu NWs, to catalyze ORR in MFCs. The interaction between N, S-CQDs and V-Cu NWs/CF from the N, S-CQDs/Cu₂O-Cu NWs is bridged by the C-S-Cu bond, which is demonstrated to be the active site towards ORR and plays an important role in promoting electron transfer by in-situ Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterizations. In MFCs, the maximum power density (924.5 ± 32.5 mW·m^-2) of N, S-CQDs/Cu₂O-Cu NWs is 1.34 times that of Pt/C (686.5 ± 28.0 mW·m^-2), and its long-term stability also outperforms the Pt/C. This study provides inspiration for synthesis of efficient ORR electrocatalysts with metal-ligand active sites creating by heteroatom-doped CQDs and cationic-metal-vacancy-rich materials.
