Abstract
Oily wastewater and marine oil spills are a massive environmental and human threat. Conventional oil spill treatment methods include adsorption by absorbent materials, dispersants or adsorbents, and in situ burning. Superhydrophobic materials, as a material that can achieve oil-water separation, have great potential for application in oil spill treatment. Research on superhydrophobic oil spill treatment mainly focuses on materials such as sponges and fabrics. Although these materials can effectively perform oil-water separation or oil spill adsorption, they also have the disadvantages of complicated preparation methods and high costs. Here, we present a miniature device for oil-water separation and oil spill collection and recovery. The superhydrophobic copper mesh box can be used on its own as an oil-water separation device or in combination with a commercial polyurethane sponge as a miniature oil-absorbing device. The robust copper mesh is prepared in two steps: anodizing and impregnation. The superhydrophobic copper mesh had a high oil separation flux (32,330 L m-2 h-1) and efficiency (97%), which remained high (28,560 L m-2 h-1) and efficient (95%) after 20 cycles of separation. The combined micro oil adsorption device can adsorb different oils and fats on the water surface, and it has good reusability with oil adsorption capacity and efficiency up to 15.28 g/g and 98% and still has good oil adsorption capacity (11.54 g/g) and efficiency (94.6%) after 20 cycles of adsorption. Therefore, the prepared micro oil-absorbing device has promising application prospects in oil-water separation, oil spill cleanup, etc. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: This study demonstrates a facile electrochemical approach to prepare a miniature device for high-efficiency oil-water separation and oil spill collection and recovery. The modified copper mesh's separation flux could reach 32,330 L m-2 h-1, showing great promise in oil-water separation and oil spill cleanup.

Abstract
Novel hybrid flame retardants containing zinc hydroxystannate and carbon nanotubes (ZHS-CNTs) were synthesized using the coprecipitation method, and the structure and morphology of ZHS-CNTs were investigate using an X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Then, the ZHS, CNTs and ZHS-CNTs were incorporated into EP, respectively, and the flame-retardant and smoke inhibition performance of the composites were compared and studied. Among the three composites, the EP/ZHS-CNT composites have the highest improvements on the fire resistance and smoke inhibition properties. With only 2.0 wt.% ZHS-CNT hybrids, the pHRR of EP/ZHS-CNT composite materials is reduced by 34.2% compared with EP. Moreover, the release of toxic gases including CO, CO2 and SPR from the composites was also effectively inhibited. The mechanisms of flame retardant and smoke inhibition were investigated and the improved properties were generally ascribed to the synergistic flame-retardant effects between ZHS and CNTs, the catalyzing effect of ZHS and the stable network structure of CNTs.

Abstract
An abundance of early warning graphene-based nano-materials and sensors have been developed to avoid and prevent the critical fire risk of combustible materials. However, there are still some limitations that should be addressed, such as the black color, high-cost and single fire warning response of graphene-based fire warning materials. Herein, we report an unexpected montmorillonite (MMT)-based intelligent fire warning materials that have excellent fire cyclic warning performance and reliable flame retardancy. Combining phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES) molecules, poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofiber (PBONF), and layers of MMT to form a silane crosslinked 3D nanonetwork system, the homologous PTES decorated MMT-PBONF nanocomposites are designed and fabricated via a sol-gel process and low temperature self-assembly method. The optimized nanocomposite paper shows good mechanical flexibility (good recovery after kneading or bending process), high tensile strength of ∼81 MPa and good water resistance. Furthermore, the nanocomposite paper exhibits high-temperature flame resistance (almost unchanged structure and size after 120 s combustion), sensitive flame alarm response (∼0.3 s response once exposure onto a flame), cyclic fire warning performance (>40 cycles), and adaptability to complex fire situations (several fire attack and evacuation scenarios), showing promising applications for monitoring the critical fire risk of combustible materials. Therefore, this work paves a rational way for design and fabrication of MMT-based smart fire warning materials that combine excellent flame shielding and sensitive fire alarm functions.

Abstract
Abstract
The improvement of mechanical properties, electrical properties, and processing properties of ultra-high-filled thermal insulation polypropylene (PP) composites has been plagued by high filling amount of heat-conducting fillers such as alumina powder (Al2O3) and expanded graphite. In order to improve its properties, this article uses a high-temperature-resistant coupling agent (A153) to modify the PP composite. The results of this study show that when the content of A153 reaches 7.5 phr, the tensile strength of PP composite can reach 5 MPa, the elongation at break can reach 25%, and the volume resistivity can reach 12.8 × 1012 Ω·m, and the maximum thermal conductivity is 1.82 W·m−1·K−1. The processability also shows that the introduction of A153 can increase the melt flow rate and effectively improve the processability of the material.

Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been considered as promising nanofillers to fabricate mixed matrix membranes for water treatment. However, manipulating distribution of MOFs nanoparticles in the membrane matrix remains a great challenge. In this study, UiO-66 was firstly coated by magnetic Ni via an in-situ reduction reaction, and then incorporated into polyethersulfone (PES) membrane matrix to prepare PES-Ni@UiO-66 membrane. The magnetic Ni allowed to manipulate the distribution of magnetic Ni@UiO-66 in the phase-inversion process by an external magnetic field. The hydrophilic Ni@UiO-66 can be pulled onto membrane surface by the magnetic force, endowing the prepared membrane with rather higher hydrophilicity. The prepared membrane exhibited superior water permeability with a pure water flux of 611.5 ± 19.8 L·m-2·h-1 and improved antifouling performance. Moreover, benifiting from photocatalytic activity of the exposed Ni@UiO-66 on membrane surface, the obtained PES-Ni@UiO-66 membrane demonstrated excellent photocatalytic self-cleaning ability with a flux recovery rate (FRR) higher than 95% under UV irradiation. Analyzing by extended Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (XDLVO) theory indicated that the improved antifouling performance could be attributed to less attractive or even repulsive interaction between the prepared membrane and pollutants. This work provided valuable guidance for structural regulation and development of high-performance MOFs-based membranes for water treatment.

Abstract
Non-phase-separated hexagonal boron carbon nitride (h-BCN) is an emerging type of promising metal-free photocatalyst, but the synthesis of this material remains quite challenging. Here, h-BCN without phase separation was obtained through a novel organic-inorganic hybrid precursor pyrolysis method using boric acid and ethylenediamine as raw materials. The resultant BCN-1 exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for CO2 reduction, as confirmed by a CO generation rate of 13.97 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light illumination with no co-catalyst or sacrificial agent. This rate was 9.4 times higher than that of g-C3N4 (2.1 μmol g-1 h-1) under the same experimental condition. The pre-existing C-N-B bond is essential for mediating the growth kinetics and diminishing the thermodynamically preferred C and BN phase-segregation structure, while ammonia is crucial for C-N-B bond fixation and pore formation during the pyrolysis process. This finding of a facile method for synthesizing non-phase-separated BCN has positive effects on the study of photocatalytic CO2 reduction by sustainable metal-free catalysts.

Abstract
The development of an environmental-friendly thermal insulation and flame retardant material has attracted widespread attention in modern architecture. In this work, a kind of novel aerogel composites were prepared by incorporation of Mg(OH)2 coated hollow glass microspheres (HGM) into chitosan (CSA) matrix and then cross-linking by glutaraldehyde (abbreviated as CSA-HGM-Mg(OH)2). The as-prepared composite aerogel exhibits vertical directional channel with high porosity and excellent thermal insulation with a low thermal conductivity of 0.035 W m-1 k-1. Besides, it shows excellent flame retardancy with a high limit oxygen index (LOI) value up to 50.8, which is one of the highest values among the most of flame retardants reported previously. Also, a very low peak heat release rate (pHRR) of 24.12 kW m-2 was obtained which makes the aerogel composite reaching UL-94 V-0 rating. Such results may be attributed to a synergy effect by combination of its abundantly porous structure derived from HGM to give a better thermal insulation and excellent nonflammability of CSA and Mg(OH)2 to offer a superior flame retardancy. Taking advantages of its high mechanical strength, low cost materials, simple and scalable preparation method, CSA-HGM-Mg(OH)2 aerogel composites may hold great potential for future thermal insulation and flame retardant applications.

Abstract
The fabrication of polymer composites with excellent thermal conductivity typically involves complex matrix or fillers modifications. This study proposed a simple technique based on precursor selection for obtaining highly thermally conductive cellulose nanofiber (CNF)/supramolecule-synthesized carbon nitride (SCN) composites. Fourier-transform infrared tests demonstrated the construction of hydrogen bonds between CNF and SCN; a highly ordered structure and relatively compact in-plane stacking were confirmed via scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction characterizations. Consequently, the resultant CNF/SCN composites exhibited remarkable in-plane thermal conductivity of 11.83 ± 0.41 W m-1 K-1 at 30 wt% SCN content, which was attributed to the significantly reduced interfacial phonon scattering. It also showed evident improvements in electrical insulation and flame retardancy compared with the pure CNF film, where the volume resistivity, peak heat release rate, and total heat release were remarkably enhanced by 1242% and reduced by 59.9% and 15.8%, respectively. Further analysis of char residuals revealed a relatively dense surface, high concentration of carbon materials, and a high degree of graphitization, indicating that the char residual functioned as a robust physical barrier to effectively inhibit combustion. This study provides a facile approach to achieving high-efficiency improvements in thermal conductivity and flame retardancy, and simultaneously facilitating broader applications of carbon nitride in thermal management.

Abstract
It is of great significance to develop novel membranes with dual-function of simultaneously separating oil/water emulsion and degrading the contained water-miscible toxic organic components. To meet this requirement, a dual-functional Ni nanoparticles (NPs)@Ag/C-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) composite membrane was fabricated via electroless nickel plating strategy in this study. The as-prepared composite membrane possessed superhydrophilicity with water contact angle of 0° and splendid underwater oleophobic property with oil contact angle of 142°. When the membrane was applied for separation of surfactant stabilized oil-in-water emulsion, high permeate flux (about 97 L m-2·h-1 under gravity), oil rejection (about 98.8%) and antifouling property were achieved. Benefitting from the NiNPs@Ag/C-CNTs layer on membrane surface, the composite membrane exhibited high catalytic degradation activity for water-miscible toxic organic pollutant (4-nitrophenol) with addition of NaBH4 in a flow-through mode. Meanwhile, the NiNPs@Ag/C-CNTs composite membrane possessed excellent durability, which was verified by the good structural integrity even under ultrasonic treatment. The cost-efficiency, high separation and degradation performance of the prepared membrane suggested its great potential for treatment of oily wastewater.

Abstract
MnO2 nanorods with controllable scale were grown in the PVDF-g-PMAA modified membrane to form PVDF-g-PMAA@ MnO2 membrane through the in situ redox reaction of KMnO4 solution, which is confirmed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray energy-dispersion spectroscopy (EDX). The pore size of the membrane decreased with the increase of KMnO4 solution concentration. The thermodynamic stability and the hydrophilicity of the membrane were also enhanced by the MnO2 nanorods. The water flux, bovine serum albumin (BSA)/Lysozyme protein solution flux and rejection, flux recovery, etc. showed effective improvement of the anti-fouling performance of the PVDF-g-PMAA@ MnO2 membrane. More importantly, it can effectively separate BSA from lysozyme, which provided a potential application in the field of biology, food, and other industrial fields for the requirement of separation and purification.

Abstract
Dissolved salts, colloidal particles, and active microorganisms in brackish surface water distribution systems (BSWD) cause multiple fouling, poses potential threat to the environmental pollution, and raising technical and economic issues as well. So far, the co-occurrence and interactions of multiple fouling remains largely unknown. Multiple fouling behaviors were assessed in agriculture BSWD under different nitrogen (N) fertilizers. X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement analysis, 16S rRNA, and microbial network analysis were conducted to determine the fouling characteristics. Statistical analysis was applied to reveal the relative contributions and interaction of multiple fouling. Our results demonstrated, multiple fouling of precipitates, particulates and biofoulings were co-occurred. Fouling growth was largely attributed to the strong interactions of different fouling. The binary interactions of precipitates - particulates contributed 51.1%, and ternary interactions of precipitates - particulates - biofouling contributed 25.4% to explain the decline of system performance, while the contribution of each single type fouling was minimal. Thereby indicating the significant role of calcium silica, biomineralization and bio-silicates in fouling. The lower acid N fertilizer broken the interaction of multiple fouling by increasing the precipitate crystal parameters and repulsive forces amongst particulates, as well as destroyed microbial interactions in biofouling. Overall, this study open frontier for multiple fouling in-depth profiling and antifouling guidance for effective utilization of BSWD.

Abstract
Against the background of people's increasing awareness of personal safety and property safety, the flame retardancy (FR) of materials has increasingly become the focus of attention in the field of construction engineering. A variety of materials have been developed in research and production in this field. Polymers have many advantages, such as their light weight, low water absorption, high flexibility, good chemical corrosion resistance, high specific strength, high specific modulus and low thermal conductivity, and are often applied to the field of construction engineering. However, the FR of unmodified polymer is not ideal, and new methods to make it more flame retardant are needed to enhance the FR. This article primarily introduces the flame-retardant mechanism of fire retardancy. It summarizes the preparation of polymer flame-retardant materials by adding different flame-retardant agents, and the application and research progress related to polymer flame-retardant materials in construction engineering.

Abstract
The 3D (three-dimensional) oriented nanosheet array FeNi2P electrocatalyst grown on carbon cloth (FeNi2P/CC) is explored in this work. This unique 3D oriented nanosheet array structure can expose more catalytic active sites, promote the penetration of electrolyte solution on the catalyst surface, and facilitate the transfer of ions, thus speeding up the kinetic process of Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and Oxygen evolution reaction (OER). At the current densities of 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH solution, the HER overpotential (71 mV) of the FeNi2P/CC self-supporting electrode is very close to that of noble metal HER catalyst of 20% Pt/C (54 mV), and its OER overpotential (210 mV) is 34% lower than that of the precious metal OER catalyst of RuO2 (318 mV), demonstrating the excellent electrocatalytic performance of the FeNi2P/CC catalyst. Moreover, the cell voltage for full water splitting (at 10 mA/cm2 current densities) of the FeNi2P/CC bifunctional electrode cell is 1.52 V, which is 3.8% lower than that of the full noble-metal electrode reference cell (RuO2 || Pt/C, 1.58 V), suggesting that this FeNi2P/CC bifunctional catalyst is likely to replace precious metals to reduce the costs in full water splitting application. According to density functional theory (DFT) calculation results, the introduction of iron atom can change the electronic structure of the Ni2P, so it can reduce the adsorption energy of hydrogen and oxygen, and facilitate the adsorption and desorption of hydrogen and oxygen on the surface of the catalyst, improving its performance of HER and OER.

Abstract
Although more and more attention has been paid to electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding fabric materials due to increasing electromagnetic waves pollution, little attention to their fire safety behavior and durability in practical use. Herein, durable EMI shielding ramie fabric with flame retardant and self-healing performance were fabricated by depositing ammonium polyphosphate (APP)/polyethyleneimine (PEI) layer, MXene sheets and polycaprolactone (PCL) layer. The resultant multifunctional fabric could self-extinguish and the peak heat release rate (pHRR) value reduced about 74.3% for the modified ramie fabric that contains about 12 wt% of PEI/APP bilayer compared with pure ramie fabric. Furthermore, the ramie fabric coated by a increasing amount of MXene sheets changed from insulating to conductive, thus gradually improving their EMI shielding performance, which exhibit a high electrical conductivity of 900.56 S/m with an outstanding SE value of 35 dB at a 1.2 mg/cm2 content in the X-band. Besides, When the multifunctional fabric was cut off under external force, it could achieve self-healing and the EMI shielding performance can recover to 34 dB due to the low melting point and good fluidity of PCL. Thus, this multifunctional fabric holds great promise for wearable intelligent cloth, EMI shielding and other fields.

Abstract
In this work, three biochars, deriving from soft wood, oil seed rape, and rice husk and differing as far as the ash content is considered (2.3, 23.4, and 47.8 wt.%, respectively), were compounded in an ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (vinyl acetate content: 19 wt.%), using a co-rotating twin-screw extruder; three loadings for each biochar were selected, namely 15, 20, and 40 wt.%. The thermal and mechanical properties were thoroughly investigated, as well as the flame retardance of the resulting compounds. In particular, biochar, irrespective of the type, slowed down the crystallization of the copolymer: this effect increased with increasing the filler loading. Besides, despite a very limited effect in flammability tests, the incorporation of biochar at increasing loadings turned out to enhance the forced-combustion behavior of the compounds, as revealed by the remarkable decrease of peak of heat release rate and of total heat release, notwithstanding a significant increase of the residues at the end of the tests. Finally, increasing the biochar loadings promoted an increase of the stiffness of the resulting compounds, as well as a decrease of their ductility with respect to unfilled ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), without impacting too much on the overall mechanical behavior of the copolymer. The obtained results seem to indicate that biochar may represent a possible low environmental impact alternative to the already used flame retardants for EVA, providing a good compromise between enhanced fire resistance and acceptable mechanical properties.
