Nitrogen-doped carbon encapsulated zinc vanadate polyhedron engineered from a metal-organic framework as a stable anode for alkali ion batteries

Engineering VOx structure by integrating oxygen vacancies for improved zinc-ion storage based on cation-doping regulation with electric density

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have attracted enormous attention for future energy-storage devices owing to their high theoretical capacity and environmental friendliness. However, obtaining cathodes with a high specific capacity and fast reaction kinetics remains a huge challenge. Herein, Cu-VOx material with a thin sheet microsphere structure composed of nanoparticles was prepared by a simple hydrothermal reaction, which improved reaction kinetics and specific capacity. Pre-embedding Cu2+ into V2O5 to introduce abundant oxygen vacancies extended the interlayer distance to 1.16 nm, weakened the effect of the V-O bonds, and improved the electrical conductivity and structural stability. At the same time, the influence of different valence metal ions (M = K+, Cu2+, Fe3+, Sn4+, Nb5+, and W6+) pre-embedded in V2O5 was studied. Benefiting from a large interlayer spacing, high electrical conductivity, and excellent structural stability, the Cu-VOx electrode demonstrated a high specific capacity of 455.9 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1. Importantly, when the current density was increased to 6 A g-1, the Cu-VOx electrode still achieved a high specific capacity of 178.8 mA h g-1 and maintained a high capacity retention of 76.5% over 2000 cycles.

NiCo2V2O8@NC Spheres with Mesoporous Yolk- Bilayer Hierarchical Structure for Enhanced Lithium Storage

Metal vanadates as negative electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries have attracted widespread attention, attributed to their substantial capacity, broad availability, and exceptional safety. In this study, NiCo2V2O8@NC microspheres featuring a yolk-double shell structure were successfully synthesized via ion exchange reactions and surface deposition techniques, employing metal glycerolate as a template. Owing to the bimetallic cobalt-nickel synergistic effect and the N-doped carbon network, this configuration not only optimizes the pore structure but also enhances conductivity, thereby augmenting the stability of the overall structure. The unique yolk-double shell design significantly enhances the utilization of active components and reduces the ion transport distance, thereby achieving high capacity. Thanks to the synergistic effects of this bimetallic and intricate structure, the material demonstrates exceptional capacity and cycle stability in lithium storage. The initial discharge capacity possesses 1522 mAh g-1 at a current density of 0.2 A g-1, with the reversible capacity still maintained at 1197 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles. In addition, at a high current density of 0.5 A g-1, the initial discharge capacity is 1487 mAh g-1, with a reversible capacity of 747 mAh g-1 maintained after 500 cycles. This study offers a perspective and methodology for the design and fabrication of complex porous double shell nanostructures.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for Advanced Sodium Storage: Development and Anticipation

As a pioneering battery technology, even though sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are safe, non-flammable, and capable of exhibiting better temperature endurance performance than lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), because of lower energy density and larger ionic size, they are not amicable for large-scale applications. Generally, the electrochemical storage performance of a secondary battery can be improved by monitoring the composition and morphology of electrode materials. Because more is the intricacy of a nanostructured composite electrode material, more electrochemical storage applications would be expected. Despite the conventional methods suitable for practical production, the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) would offer enormous opportunities for next-generation battery applications by delicately systematizing the structure and composition at the molecular level to store sodium ions with larger sizes compared with lithium ions. Here, the review comprehensively discusses the progress of nanostructured MOFs and their derivatives applied as negative and positive electrode materials for effective sodium storage in SIBs. The commercialization goal has prompted the development of MOFs and their derivatives as electrode materials, before which the synthesis and mechanism for MOF-based SIB electrodes with improved sodium storage performance are systematically discussed. Finally, the existing challenges, possible perspectives, and future opportunities will be anticipated.

Preparation of CuO@humic acid@carbon nanotube composite material using humic acid as a coupling agent and its lithium-ion storage performance

The conventional Li-ion battery composite electrode material composed of CuO and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) suffer from poor contact between CuO and CNTs. This results in high electrode resistance and poor electrochemical performance. To solve this problem, CuO@humic acid (HA) @CNT anode material with cross-linked network structure was generated by linking CuO and CNT with HA as a coupling agent. For comparison, CuO@HA or CuO@CNT were also prepared in the absence of CNT or HA, respectively. The results showed that CuO@HA@CNT had lower charge transfer resistance, higher conductivity, lithium-ion diffusion coefficient, specific capacity, and rate capability than CuO@HA and CuO@CNT. The specific capacity of the CuO@HA@CNT electrode was significantly better than that of the composite electrode materials of CuO and CNT, which have been prepared by scientists using various methods. Due to the introduction of HA, not only was the uniformly distributed flower-like CuO obtained, but also the specific capacity and rate capability of the electrode material were substantially improved. This study thus provides a good strategy to optimize the capability of transition metal oxide lithium-ion anode materials.

Hierarchical spheroidal MOF-derived MnO@C as cathode components for high-performance aqueous zinc ion batteries

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) have shown great potential as energy storage devices owing to their high energy density, low cost, and low toxicity. Typically, high performance AZIBs incorporate manganese-based cathode materials. Despite their advantages, these cathodes are limited by significant capacity fading and poor rate performance due to the dissolution and disproportionation of manganese. Herein, hierarchical spheroidal MnO@C structures were synthesized from Mn-based metal-organic frameworks, which benefit from a protective carbon layer to prevent manganese dissolution. The spheroidal MnO@C structures were incorporated onto a heterogeneous interface to act as a cathode material for AZIBs, which exhibited excellent cycling stability (160 mAh g^-1 after 1000 cycles at 3.0 A g^-1), good rate capability (165.9 mAh g^-1 at 3.0 A g^-1), and appreciable specific capacity (412.4 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1) for AZIBs. Moreover, the Zn²⁺ storage mechanism in MnO@C was comprehensively investigated using ex-situ XRD and XPS studies. These results demonstrate that hierarchical spheroidal MnO@C is a potential cathode material for high-performing AZIBs.

Synthesis of V2O5·nH2O nanobelts@polyaniline core-shell structures with highly efficient Zn2+ storage

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are regarded as attractive candidates for next-generation energy storage devices. Among various cathode materials, V₂O₅·nH₂O (VOH) possesses a high theoretical capacity but poor cycle stability due to the susceptibility of its open structure to damage by the quick shuttling of Zn²⁺. Herein, the structural stability of VOH is directly improved by wrapping polyaniline (PANI) on the VOH nanobelts (VOH@PANI). As a cathode material for AZIBs, the VOH nanobelts@PANI core-shell structures exhibit an outstanding cycle stability of 98% after 2000 cycles at 2 A g^-1. The improved conductivity and additional energy storage contribution of the PANI endow VOH@PANI with a specific capacity as high as 440 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1, substantially higher than pure VOH (291 mAh g^-1). At the same time, high energy and power densities of 349 Wh kg^-1 and 3347 W kg^-1 are achieved. This work not only demonstrates that p-type doped PANI coatings on VOH can boost the Zn²⁺ storage of VOH, but also provides a novel method to enhance cathode materials for high electrochemical performance.

Progressive activation of porous vanadium nitride microspheres with intercalation-conversion reactions toward high performance over a wide temperature range for zinc-ion batteries

Rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries have great promise for becoming next-generation storage systems, although the irreversible intercalation of Zn²⁺ and sluggish reaction kinetics impede their wide application. Therefore, it is urgent to develop highly reversible zinc-ion batteries. In this work, we modulate the morphology of vanadium nitride (VN) with different molar amounts of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). The optimal electrode has porous architecture and excellent electrical conductivity, which can alleviate volume expansion/contraction and allow for fast ion transmission during the Zn²⁺ storage process. Furthermore, the CTAB-modified VN cathode undergoes a phase transition that provides a better framework for vanadium oxide (VO_x). With the same mass of VN and VO_x, VN provides more active material after phase conversion due to the molar mass of the N atom being less than that of the O atom, thus increasing the capacity. As expected, the cathode displays an excellent electrochemical performance of 272 mAh g^-1 at 5 A g^-1, high cycling stability up to 7000 cycles, and excellent performance over a wide temperature range. This discovery creates new possibilities for the development of high-performance multivalent ion aqueous cathodes with rapid reaction mechanisms.

Pseudocapacitive Vanadium Nitride Quantum Dots Modified One-Dimensional Carbon Cages Enable Highly Kinetics-Compatible Sodium Ion Capacitors

The kinetics incompatibility between battery-type anode and capacitive-type cathode for sodium ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) seriously hinders their overall performance output. Herein, we construct a SIHCs device by coupling with quantum grade vanadium nitride (VN) nanodots anchored in one-dimensional N/F co-doped carbon nanofiber cages hybrids (VNQDs@PCNFs-N/F) as the freestanding anode and the corresponding activated N/F co-doped carbon nanofiber cages (APCNFs-N/F) as cathode. The strong coupling of VN quantum dots with N/F co-doped 1D conductive carbon cages effectively facilitates the ion/electron transport and intercalation-conversion-deintercalation reactions, ensuring fast sodium storage to surmount aforesaid kinetics incompatibility. Additionally, density functional theory calculations cogently manifest that the abundant active sites in the VNQDs@PCNFs-N/F configuration boost the Na⁺ adsorption/reaction activity well which will promote both "intrinsic" and "extrinsic" pseudocapacitance and further improve anode kinetics. Consequently, the assembled SIHCs device can achieve high energy densities of 157.1 and 95.0 Wh kg^-1 at power densities of 198.8 and 9100.5 W kg^-1, respectively, with an ultralong cycling life over 8000 cycles. This work further verified the feasibility of kinetics-compatible electrode design strategy toward metal ion hybrid capacitors.

Hydrated lithium ions intercalated V2O5 with dual-ion synergistic insertion mechanism for high-performance aqueous zinc-ion batteries

Li_0.45V₂O₅·0.89H₂O (LVO) was successfully synthesized by wet-mixing of LiOH·H₂O and V₂O₅, with subsequent hydrothermal method for the first time. The hydrated lithium ions as the intercalated guest species were inserted into the V₂O₅ interlayer. The as-obtained LVO with a stable lamellar structure, enlarged interlayer space, weak interlayer repulsive force and low molecular weight, which shows a specific capacitance of 403 mAh g^-1 at 0.1 A g^-1, excellent rate capability and longlifespan with capacity retention of 86% over 1000 cycles at 10 A g^-1. Furthermore, the LVO-based AZIBs possess a synergistic insertion mechanism of Zn²⁺ and H⁺, that is the reason for its superior performance. This work provides an efficient design strategy for synthesizing advanced cathode materials for the high-performance Zn²⁺ energy storage system.

Engineering Interlayer Space of Vanadium Oxide by Pyridinesulfonic Acid-Assisted Intercalation of Polypyrrole Enables Enhanced Aqueous Zinc-Ion Storage

By adjusting the structure of vanadium oxides, their electrochemical performances as cathode materials for aqueous rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (ARZIBs) can be improved effectively. Due to the layered structure and high specific capacity of V₂O₅, many guests (like metal ions and conducting polymers) intercalated and regulated the structure to enhance its electrochemical properties. Polypyrrole (PPy) has attracted people's attention due to its good conductive ability. However, the intercalation of PPy into a lamellar structure of hydrated V₂O₅ (VOH) has rarely been achieved as a cathode material for ARZIBs. Herein, we developed a pyridinesulfonic acid (PSA)-assisted approach to intercalate PPy into the interplanar spacing of VOH under acidic conditions, and the sample is denoted as VOH-PPy (PSA). The presence of protic acid can improve the electrical conductivity of the polymer and enhance the oxidation of VOH, making the polymerization of pyrrole easier. Furthermore, the nitrogen-containing groups in PSA can interact with vanadium to further expand the layer space of VOH, and the sulfonic groups can facilitate the polymerization of pyrrole. The addition of the PSA results in an ultralarge interlayer spacing of 15.8 Å. VOH-PPy (PSA) delivers an excellent specific capacity of up to 422 mAh·g^-1 at 0.1 A·g^-1 and a stable cycle performance of 165 mAh·g^-1 after 5000 cycles at 10 A·g^-1. This work not only realizes PPy expanding the lamellar structure of VOH but also provides feasibility for improving the electrochemical properties of VOH as a cathode material for ARZIBs by intercalating conductive polymers.
