Wimpled thin films via multiple motions of a bubble decorated with surface-active molecules

HYPOTHESIS

Thin liquid films play a crucial role in various systems and applications. Understanding the mechanisms that regulate their morphology is a scientific challenge with obvious implications for application optimization. Thin liquid films trapped between bubbles and air-liquid interface can show various configurations influenced by their deformation history and system characteristics.

EXPERIMENTS

The morphology of thin liquid films formed in the presence of surface-active molecules is here studied with interferometric techniques. Three different systems with varying interfacial properties are investigated to understand their influence on film morphology. Specific deformation histories are applied to the films to generate complex film structures.

FINDINGS

We achieve the creation of a rather stable wimple by implementing controlled bubble motions against the air-liquid interface. We provide a criterion for wimple formation based on lubrication theory. The long-term stability of the wimple is also investigated, and more complex multi-wimple structures are experimentally produced building upon the achieved wimple stability.

Quantitative phase imaging based on holography: trends and new perspectives

In 1948, Dennis Gabor proposed the concept of holography, providing a pioneering solution to a quantitative description of the optical wavefront. After 75 years of development, holographic imaging has become a powerful tool for optical wavefront measurement and quantitative phase imaging. The emergence of this technology has given fresh energy to physics, biology, and materials science. Digital holography (DH) possesses the quantitative advantages of wide-field, non-contact, precise, and dynamic measurement capability for complex-waves. DH has unique capabilities for the propagation of optical fields by measuring light scattering with phase information. It offers quantitative visualization of the refractive index and thickness distribution of weak absorption samples, which plays a vital role in the pathophysiology of various diseases and the characterization of various materials. It provides a possibility to bridge the gap between the imaging and scattering disciplines. The propagation of wavefront is described by the complex amplitude. The complex-value in the complex-domain is reconstructed from the intensity-value measurement by camera in the real-domain. Here, we regard the process of holographic recording and reconstruction as a transformation between complex-domain and real-domain, and discuss the mathematics and physical principles of reconstruction. We review the DH in underlying principles, technical approaches, and the breadth of applications. We conclude with emerging challenges and opportunities based on combining holographic imaging with other methodologies that expand the scope and utility of holographic imaging even further. The multidisciplinary nature brings technology and application experts together in label-free cell biology, analytical chemistry, clinical sciences, wavefront sensing, and semiconductor production.

Multispectral Holographic Intensity and Phase Imaging of Semitransparent Ultrathin Films

In this paper, we demonstrate a novel optical characterization method for ultrathin semitransparent and absorbing materials through multispectral intensity and phase imaging. The method is based on a lateral-shearing interferometric microscopy (LIM) technique, where phase-shifting allows extraction of both the intensity and the phase of transmitted optical fields. To demonstrate the performance in characterizing semitransparent thin films, we fabricated and measured cupric oxide (CuO) seeded gold ultrathin metal films (UTMFs) with mass-equivalent thicknesses from 2 to 27 nm on fused silica substrates. The optical properties were modeled using multilayer thin film interference and a parametric model of their complex refractive indices. The UTMF samples were imaged in the spectral range from 475 to 750 nm using the proposed LIM technique, and the model parameters were fitted to the measured data in order to determine the respective complex refractive indices for varying thicknesses. Overall, by using the combined intensity and phase not only for imaging and quality control but also for determining the material properties, such as complex refractive indices, this technique demonstrates a high potential for the characterization of the optical properties, of (semi-) transparent thin films.

Nonaqueous foam stabilization mechanisms in the presence of volatile solvents

Hypothesis Nonaqueous foams are found in a variety of applications, many of which contain volatile components that need to be removed during processing. Sparging air bubbles into the liquid can be used to aid in their removal, but the resulting foam can be stabilized or destabilized by several different mechanisms, the relative importance of which are not yet fully understood. Investigating the dynamics of thin film drainage, four competing mechanisms can be observed, such as solvent evaporation, film viscosification, and thermal and solutocapillary Marangoni flows. Experiments Experimental studies with isolated bubbles and/or bulk foams are needed to strengthen the fundamental knowledge of these systems. This paper presents interferometric measurements of the dynamic evolution of a film formed by a bubble rising to an air-liquid interface to shed light on this situation. Two different solvents with different degrees of volatility were investigated to reveal both qualitative and quantitative details on thin film drainage mechanisms in polymer-volatile mixtures. Findings Using interferometry, we found evidence that solvent evaporation and film viscosification both strongly influence the stability of interface. These findings were corroborated by comparison with bulk foam measurements, revealing a strong correlation between these two systems.

3D monitoring of the surface slippage effect on micro-particle sedimentation by digital holographic microscopy

In several phenomena in biology and industry, it is required to understand the comprehensive behavior of sedimenting micro-particles in fluids. Here, we use the numerical refocusing feature of digital holographic microscopy (DHM) to investigate the slippage effect on micro-particle sedimentation near a flat wall. DHM provides quantitative phase contrast and three-dimensional (3D) imaging in arbitrary time scales, which suggests it as an elegant approach to investigate various phenomena, including dynamic behavior of colloids. 3D information is obtained by post-processing of the recorded digital holograms. Through analysis of 3D trajectories and velocities of multiple sedimenting micro-particles, we show that proximity to flat walls of higher slip lengths causes faster sedimentation. The effect depends on the ratio of the particle size to (1) the slip length and (2) its distance to the wall. We corroborate our experimental findings by a theoretical model which considers both the proximity and the particle interaction to a wall of different hydrophobicity in the hydrodynamic forces.
