Microwave-assisted rapid synthesis and activation of ultrathin trimetal-organic framework nanosheets for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Integrated design and application of stimuli-responsive metal-organic frameworks in biomedicine: current status and future perspectives

In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have garnered widespread attention due to their distinctive attributes, such as high surface area, tunable properties, biodegradability, extremely low density, high loading capacity, diverse chemical functionalities, thermal stability, well-defined pore sizes, and molecular dimensions. Increasingly, biomedical researchers have turned their focus towards their multifaceted development. Among these, stimuli-responsive MOFs, with their unique advantages, have captured greater interest from researchers. This review will delve into the merits and drawbacks of both endogenous and exogenous stimuli-responsive MOFs, along with their application directions. Furthermore, it will outline the characteristics of different synthesis routes of MOFs, exploring various design schemes and modification strategies and their impacts on the properties of MOF products, as well as how to control them. Additionally, we will survey different types of stimuli-responsive MOFs, discussing the significance of various MOF products reported in biomedical applications. We will categorically summarize different strategies such as anticancer therapy, antibacterial treatment, tissue repair, and biomedical imaging, as well as insights into the development of novel MOFs nanomaterials in the future. Finally, this review will conclude by summarizing the challenges in the development of stimuli-responsive MOFs in the field of biomedicine and providing prospects for future research endeavors.

Microwave-Assisted Ultrafast Synthesis of Bimetallic Nickel-Cobalt Metal-Organic Frameworks for Application in the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Herein, a series of monometallic Ni-, Co- and Zn-MOFs and bimetallic NiCo-, NiZn- and CoZn-MOFs of formula M2(BDC)2DABCO and (M,M')2(BDC)2DABCO, respectively, (M, M'=metal) with the same pillar and layer linkers 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (BDC) were prepared through a fast microwave-assisted thermal conversion synthesis method (MW) within only 12 min. In the bimetallic MOFs the ratio M:M' was 4 : 1. The mono- and bimetallic MOFs were selected to systematically explore the catalytic-activity of their derived metal oxide/hydroxides for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Among all tested bimetallic MOF-derived catalysts, the NiCoMOF exhibits superior catalytic activity for the OER with the lowest overpotentials of 301 mV and Tafel slopes of 42 mV dec-1 on a rotating disk glassy carbon electrode (RD-GCE) in 1 mol L-1 KOH electrolyte at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. In addition, NiCoMOF was insitu grown in just 25 min by the MW synthesis on the surface of nickel foam (NF) with, for example, a mass loading of 16.6 mgMOF/gNF, where overpotentials of 313 and 328 mV at current densities of 50 and 300 mA cm-2, respectively, were delivered and superior long-term stability for practical OER application. The low Tafel slope of 27 mV dec-1, as well as a low reaction resistance from electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurement (Rfar=2 Ω), confirm the excellent OER performance of this NiCoMOF/NF composite. During the electrocatalytic processes or even before upon KOH pre-treatment, the MOFs are transformed to the mixed-metal hydroxide phase α-/β-M(OH)2 which presents the active species in the reactions (turnover frequency TOF=0.252 s-1 at an overpotential of 320 mV). Compared to the TOF from β-M(OH)2 (0.002 s-1), our study demonstrates that a bimetallic MOF improves the electrocatalytic performance of the derived catalyst by giving an intimate and uniform mixture of the involved metals at the nanoscale.

Core-bishell NiFe@NC@MoS2 for boosting electrocatalytic activity towards ultra-efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Designing and developing suitable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts with high activity and stability remain challenging in electrolytic water splitting. Hence, NiFe@NC@MoS2 core-bishell composites wrapped by molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) and nitrogen-doped graphene (NC) were prepared using hydrothermal synthesis in this research. NiFe@NC@MoS2 composite exhibits excellent performance with an overpotential of 288 mV and a Tafel slope of 53.2 mV·dec-1 at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2 in 1 M KOH solution, which is superior to commercial RuO2. NC and MoS2 bishells create profuse edge active sites that enhance the adsorption ability of OOH* while lowering the overall overpotential of the product and improving its oxygen precipitation performance. The density function theory(DFT) analysis confirms that the layered MoS2 in NiFe@NC@MoS2 provides additional edge active sites and enhances electron transfer, thus increasing the intrinsic catalytic activity. This research paves a novel way for developing OER electrocatalysts with excellent catalytic performance.

Glycine-Modified Co-MOF Pervaporation Membrane to Enhance Water Transporting

Cobalt-based metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) with a two-dimensional layered morphology have received increasing attention for pervaporation due to their stability and hydrophilic properties. Using amino glycine (Gly) as a cross-linking agent, the Co-MOF ultrathin two-dimensional membrane doped with organic filler sodium alginate (SA) with the "brick-mixed-sand" structure was proposed. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was selected as the support layer of the hybrid membrane. The introduction of Gly efficiently solved the nanomaterial stacking problem and controllably adjusted the interlayer spacing between the nanosheets, which demonstrated good performance for ethanol dehydration. The results of this experimental research showed that the total flux of alcohol/water (9:1) separation by Gly-Co-MOF-SA/PAN hybrid membranes reached 1902 g m-2 h-1, which was 67% higher than that of the pure SA membranes. The "brick-mixed-sand" lamellar dense morphology of Gly-Co-MOF not only enhances membrane hydrophilicity but also provides effective channels for the rapid transport of water, which is expected to be used for the dehydration of organic solvents.

Designing Different Heterometallic Organic Frameworks by Heteroatom and Second Metal Doping Strategies for the Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered one of the most significant electrocatalysts for the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Hence, a series of novel N,S-codoped Ni-based heterometallic organic framework (HMOF) (NiM-bptz-HMOF, M = Co, Zn, and Mn; bptz = 2,5-bis((3-pyridyl)methylthio)thiadiazole) precatalysts are constructed by the heteroatom and second metal doping strategies. The effective combination of the two strategies promotes electronic conductivity and optimizes the electronic structure of the metal. By regulation of the type and proportion of metal ions, the electrochemical performance of the OER can be improved. Among them, the optimized Ni6Zn1-bptz-HMOF precatalyst exhibits the best performance with an overpotential of 268 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 72.5 mV dec-1. This work presents a novel strategy for the design of modest heteroatom-doped OER catalysts.

Recent advances in metal-organic frameworks: Synthesis, application and toxicity

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new class of crystalline porous hybrid materials with high porosity, large specific surface area and adjustable channel structure and biocompatibility, which are being investigated with increasing interest for energy storage and conversion, gas adsorption/separation, catalysis, sensing and biomedicine. However, the practical applications of MOFs make them release into the environment inevitable, posing a threat to humans and organisms. In this article, we cover advances in the currently available MOFs synthesis methods and the emerging applications of MOFs, especially in the biomedical field (therapeutic agents and bioimaging). Additionally, after evaluating the current status of main exposure routes and affecting factors in the field of MOFs-toxicity, the molecular mechanism is also clarified and identified. Knowledge gaps are identified from such a summarization and frontier development are explored for MOFs. Afterwards, we also present the limitations, challenges, and future perspectives in the study of the entire life cycle of MOFs. This review emphasizes the need for a more targeted discussion of the latest, widely used and effective versatile material class in order to exploit the full potential of high-performance and non-toxicity MOFs in the future.

Ultra-thin 2D bimetallic MOF nanosheets for highly sensitive and stable detection of glucose in sweat for dancer

The measurement of glucose concentration in sweat is expected to replace the existing blood glucose detection, which realize the effective way of non-invasive monitoring of human glucose concentration in dancing. High precision glucose detection can be achieved by adjusting the electrode material of the sensor. Thus, in this work, the bimetallic organic frameworks (bi-MOFs) materials containing Mn and Ni ions (NiMn-MOF) with ultrathin nanosheets have been exquisitely designed. The ultrathin nanosheet and heterogeneous metal ions in the structure optimize the electronic structure, which improves the electrical conductivity of MOFs. The success of the preparation strategy leads the good electrocatalytic performance of NiMn-MOF for glucose detection. Detailedly, NiMn-MOF shows high sensitivity of 1576 μA mM-1 cm-2 in the linear range from 0 to 0.205 mM and the wide linear region of 0.255-2.655 mM and 3.655-5.655 mM were also observed. In addition, the high repeatability, reproductivity, long-term stability and ultra-low limited of detection (LOD, 0.28 μM, S/N = 3) provide foundation for the practical sensor application of this NiMn-MOF nanosheets. Remarkably, as designed NiMn-MOF sensor can accurately measure glucose in sweat showing great potential in the field of wearable glucose monitoring during dancing.

2D bimetallic organic framework nanosheets for high-performance wearable power source and real-time monitoring of glucose

Diabetics often prick their fingertips to measure the glucose levels in their blood. However, this traditional method not only causes prolonged pain but also increases the risk of infection. Hence, in this study, a non-invasive flexible glucose biosensor with high sensitivity was fabricated. Specifically, NiCo metal-organic frameworks (NiCo-MOFs) served as the electrode material of a micro-supercapacitor and sensing material of a glucose sensor. The electrochemical tests verified that the prominent sensitivity of the NiCo bimetal product is 1422.2 μA mM^-1 cm^-2. The micro-supercapacitor based on the as-fabricated NiCo-MOFs showed a high energy density of 11.5 mW h cm^-2 at the power density 0.26 mW cm^-2. In addition, the as-designed glucose device exhibited an excellent sensitivity of 0.31 μA μM^-1. Furthermore, a flexible energy storage and glucose detection system was successfully prepared by further integrating the micro-supercapacitor and glucose sensor. The smart detector could accurately and conveniently measure the glucose concentration in sweat in real-time. Therefore, the wearable real-time sensing device displays feasible application for non-invasive glucose monitoring and health management.

Recent progress in microwave-assisted preparations of 2D materials and catalysis applications

On the urgency of metal-free catalysts, two-dimensional materials (2DMs) have caused extensive researches because of distinctive optical and electronic properties. In the last decade, microwave methods have emerged in rapid and effective preparations of 2DMs for catalysis. Microwave heating offers several advantages namely direct, fast, selective heating and uniform reaction temperature compared to conventional heating methods, thus bringing about high-yield and high-purity products in minutes or even seconds. This review summarizes recent advances in microwave-assisted preparations of 2DMs-based catalysts and their state-of-the-art catalytic performances. Microwave heating mechanisms are briefly introduced mainly focusing on microwave-matter interactions, which can guide the choice of precursors, liquid media, substrates, auxiliaries and experiment parameters during microwave radiation. We especially provide a detailed insight into various microwave-assisted procedures, classified as exfoliation, synthesis, doping, modification and construction towards different 2DMs nanomaterials. We also discuss how microwave affects the synthetic composition and microstructure of 2DMs-based catalysts, thereby deeply influencing their optical and electronic properties and the catalytic performances. Finally, advantages, challenges and prospects of microwave-assisted approaches for 2DMs nanomaterials are summarized to inspire the effective and large-scale fabrication of novel 2DMs-based catalysts.

In situ growth of hierarchical bimetal-organic frameworks on nickel-iron foam as robust electrodes for the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Evidence shows that self-supported electrocatalysts are crucial role to solving environmental and energy issues. In this study, self-supported 2D metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets grown in situ on nickel-iron foam (NFF) were prepared by a one-step solvothermal process. The hierarchical nanostructure possesses a high specific surface area and abundant metal sites, which are beneficial for electrocatalytic reactions. In the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the optimal NiFe(20Ni)-MOF/NFF can drive current densities of 10, 50 and 100 mA cm^-2 at small overpotentials of 226, 277 and 294 mV, respectively. According to the characterization results, the OER performance is improved by the synergistic action of bimetals and the generation of hydroxides/oxyhydroxides. This work provides new insights into fabricating self-supported MOF-based electrodes for water splitting that are simple and highly efficient.

Highly Enhanced OER Performance by Er-Doped Fe-MOF Nanoarray at Large Current Densities

Great expectations have been held for the electrochemical splitting of water for producing hydrogen as a significant carbon-neutral technology aimed at solving the global energy crisis and greenhouse gas issues. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process must be energetically catalyzed over a long period at high output, leading to challenges for efficient and stable processing of electrodes for practical purposes. Here, we first prepared Fe-MOF nanosheet arrays on nickel foam via rare-earth erbium doping (Er_0.4 Fe-MOF/NF) and applied them as OER electrocatalysts. The Er_0.4 Fe-MOF/NF exhibited wonderful OER performance and could yield a 100 mA cm⁻² current density at an overpotential of 248 mV with outstanding long-term electrochemical durability for at least 100 h. At large current densities of 500 and 1000 mA cm⁻², overpotentials of only 297 mV and 326 mV were achieved, respectively, revealing its potential in industrial applications. The enhancement was attributed to the synergistic effects of the Fe and Er sites, with Er playing a supporting role in the engineering of the electronic states of the Fe sites to endow them with enhanced OER activity. Such a strategy of engineering the OER activity of Fe-MOF via rare-earth ion doping paves a new avenue to design other MOF catalysts for industrial OER applications.
