In situ fabrication of niobium pentoxide/graphitic carbon nitride type-II heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Chitosan synergizes with bismuth-based metal-organic frameworks to construct double S-type heterojunctions for enhancing photocatalytic antimicrobial activity

In recent years, photocatalytic technology has been introduced to develop a new kind antimicrobial agents fighting antibiotic abusing and related drug resistance. The efforts have focused on non-precious metal photocatalysts along with green additives. In the present work, a novel bis-S heterojunctions based on the coupling of polysaccharide (CS) and bismuth-based MOF (CAU-17) s synthesized through a two-step method involving amidation reaction under mild conditions. The as prepared photocatalyst literally extended the light response to the near-infrared region. Owing to its double S-type heterostructure, the lifetime of the photocarriers is significantly prolonged and the redox capacity are enhanced. As a result, the as prepared photocatalyst indicated inhibition up to 99.9 % under 20 min of light exposure against Gram-positive (S. aureus) and Gram-negative (E. coli) bacteria as well as drug-resistant bacteria (MRSA). The outstanding photocatalytic performance is attributed to the effective charge separation and migration due to the unique double S heterostructure. Such a double S heterostructure was confirmed through transient photocurrent response, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests and electron spin resonance measurements. The present work provides a basis for the simple synthesis of high-performance heterojunction photocatalytic inhibitors, which extends the application of CAU-17 in environmental disinfection and wastewater purification.

A systematic review on Nb2O5-based photocatalysts: Crystallography, synthetic methods, design strategies, and photocatalytic mechanisms

With the increasing popularity of photocatalytic technology and the highly growing issues of energy scarcity and environmental pollution, there is an increasing interest in extremely efficient photocatalytic systems. The widespread immense attention and applicability of Nb2O5 photocatalysts can be attributed to their multiple benefits, including strong redox potentials, non-toxicity, earth abundance, corrosion resistance, and efficient thermal and chemical stability. However, the large-scale application of Nb2O5 is currently impeded by the barriers of rapid recombination loss of photo-activated electron/hole pairs and the inadequacy of visible light absorption. To overcome these constraints, plentiful design strategies have been directed at modulating the morphology, electronic band structure, and optical properties of Nb2O5. The current review offers an extensive analysis of Nb2O5-based photocatalysts, with a particular emphasis on crystallography, synthetic methods, design strategies, and photocatalytic mechanisms. Finally, an outline of future research directions and challenges in developing Nb2O5-based materials with excellent photocatalytic performance is presented.

Facile fabrication of 3D hollow porous aminopyridine rings decorated polymeric carbon nitride for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and dye elimination

In consideration of energy shortages and environmental pollution, there is a critical need to develop a photocatalyst with high catalytic performance for rapid hydrogen production and efficient pollutant degradation. We synthesized a photocatalytic composite catalyst with three-dimensional (3D) porous aminopyridine rings grafted on the edge of g-C3N4 (APCN) using melamine, cyanuric acid and 4-aminopyridine as raw materials. The composite catalyst exhibited excellent photocatalytic performance for H2 production (2.44 mmol g-1h-1) and RhB degradation (97.08%) under visible light. Subsequently, a possible enhanced mechanism of the catalyst was proposed on the basis of a series of characterization and photocatalytic experiments. The 3D porous structure not only enhanced the structural stability but also increased the surface area of the APCN catalysts, which generated more exposed active sites. Moreover, the aminopyridine ring embellishment was beneficial for achieving a narrowed bandgap and charge migration and separation, which decreased the occurrence of photogenerated carrier recombination. In summary, these two structural features showed a synergistic effect to enhance the photocatalytic performance of the APCN catalyst. Finally, an integrated feasible enhanced mechanism of photocatalytic activity was elucidated according to the results of active substance capture tests, showing that O2•- played an important role during RhB degradation.

Green synthesized Ag decorated CeO2 nanoparticles: Efficient photocatalysts and potential antibacterial agents

Implication of natural resources for manufacturing of nanoparticles is sustainable, economical and contaminant free approach towards ecological and medical applications. Herein, CeO₂ and Ag/CeO₂ nanoparticles are green synthesized from Morinda tinctoria plant extract. The phase structure, surface morphology, optical identity, Ce(III) and Ce(IV) valency of the synthesized CeO₂ and Ag/CeO₂ nanoparticles are explored. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated the formation of cubic phase CeO₂ and cubic silver decorated CeO₂ nanoparticles. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed the metal decoration of CeO₂ nanoparticles, metal-oxygen stretching, indicating the plant molecules reduction and stabilization. UV-visible spectroscopy shown the decreased band gap owing to silver modification. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) micrographs displayed spherical morphology of the nanoparticles. Elemental composition and sample purity is assessed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Double oxidation of Ce, double splitting energy of Ag and lattice oxygen are observed from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Photocatalytic activity of Ag/CeO₂ exposed the enhanced photocatalytic activity up to 94% where CeO₂ nanoparticles gave 60% degradation of bromophenol blue (BB). The plasmonic decoration of silver on the ceria surface induced the charge separations and free radical reactions. Moreover, Ag/CeO₂ nanoparticles are seen as superior antibacterial agents than CeO₂ towards both E.coli and S.aureus. Hence, the silver decorated metal oxide photocatalyst successfully degraded the BB dye and inactivated the bacterial strains. This report established a future research in green synthesis of multipurpose metal nanoparticles.

Ni2P NPs loaded on methylthio-functionalized UiO-66 for boosting visible-light-driven photocatalytic H2 production

The UiO-66 family shows promising photocatalytic prospects in water splitting for hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation due to its suitable band gap and adequate active sites. In this work, novel Ni₂P/UiO-66-(SCH₃)₂ composites were prepared by a simple solvothermal method. These as-synthesized samples were fully characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, EDS, and XPS methods. The effectiveness of visible light driven photocatalytic water-splitting to produce hydrogen was investigated in the presence of sacrificial agents. The results showed that the optimal hydrogen yield of 5 wt% Ni₂P/UiO-66-(SCH₃)₂ is 3724.22 μmol g^-1 h^-1, reaching almost 187 times that of pristine UiO-66-(SCH₃)₂ (19.93 μmol g^-1 h^-1). Meanwhile, long term cycling stability tests also showed that Ni₂P/UiO-66-(SCH₃)₂ composites present an excellent photocatalytic H₂ production stability. Photoelectrochemical performance analysis revealed that the high catalytic activity of the composite materials could be associated with the synergistic effect of UiO-66-(SCH₃)₂ and Ni₂P. Light stimulates UiO-66-(SCH₃)₂ to generate electrons and holes, and Ni₂P as a cocatalyst could effectively transmit electrons and boost photogenerated charge separation. This work provides a reference for exploring UiO-66 family catalysts with good catalytic activity.

Enhanced adsorption and catalytic degradation of antibiotics by porous 0D/3D Co3O4/g-C3N4 activated peroxymonosulfate: An experimental and mechanistic study

In this work, Co₃O₄/g-C₃N₄ catalyst with highly efficient adsorption and degradation of antibiotics was developed based on the combination of three-dimensional (3D) porous morphological controls of g-C₃N₄ and the loading of Co₃O₄ quantum dots (Co₃O₄ QDs). It was discovered that the catalyst can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) through a non-photochemical path, and a high tetracycline elimination rate of 99.7% can be achieved within 18 min. The characterization and density functional theory calculation results demonstrated that the porous 3D structure can not only promote the substrate adsorption reaction but also provide large surface area and countless exposed active sites for catalytic reaction. The introduction of Co₃O₄ QDs lowered activation energy barrier and lead to high energy of PMS adsorption. More efficient charge migration between the catalyst and PMS further accelerated PMS activation. Thus, leading to the excellent catalytic performance. In addition, non-free radical mediated degradation mechanism of catalytic activity was also proposed. This work provides a scheme for designing novel and efficient PMS activators for the removal of abusive antibiotics from aqueous environments.

Piezoelectric Effect Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Pt/Bi3.4Gd0.6Ti3O12 Plasmonic Photocatalysis

Novel Pt/Bi_3.4Gd_0.6Ti₃O₁₂ heterojunction was synthesized by a decoration of Pt nanoparticles (PtNPs) on the surface of piezoelectric Bi_3.4Gd_0.6Ti₃O₁₂ (BGTO) through an impregnation process. The photocatalytic, piezo-catalytic, and piezo-photocatalytic activities of the Pt/BGTO heterojunction for methyl orange (MO) degradation were investigated under ultrasonic excitation and whole spectrum light irradiation. The internal piezoelectric field of BGTO and a plasmonic effect have been proven important for the photocatalytic activity of the heterojunctions. Pt/BGTO exhibited an optimum photocatalytic degradation performance of 92% for MO in 70 min under irradiation of whole light spectrum and ultrasonic coexcitation, and this value was about 1.41 times higher than the degradation rate under whole spectrum light irradiation alone. The PtNPs in Pt/BGTO heterojunction can absorb the incident light intensively, and induce the collective oscillation of surface electrons due to the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect, thus generating “hot” electron–hole pairs. The internal piezoelectric field produced in BGTO by ultrasonic can promote the separation of SPR-induced “hot” charge carriers and facilitate the production of highly reactive oxidation radicals, thus enhancing Pt/BGTO heterojunction′s photocatalytic activity for oxidizing organic dyes.

Enhanced visible-light-driven RhB removal with a Mo–Ni bimetallic sulfide/g-C3N4 nanosheet Schottky junction
