In the last decade, the Fick-Jacobs approximation has been exploited to capture transport across constrictions. Here, we review the derivation of the Fick-Jacobs equation with particular emphasis on its linear response regime. We show that, for fore-aft symmetric channels, the flux of noninteracting systems is fully captured by its linear response regime. For this case, we derive a very simple formula that captures the correct trends and can be exploited as a simple tool to design experiments or simulations. Lastly, we show that higher-order corrections in the flux may appear for nonsymmetric channels.

Active Brownian motion with memory delay induced by a viscoelastic medium

By now active Brownian motion is a well-established model to describe the motion of mesoscopic self-propelled particles in a Newtonian fluid. On the basis of the generalized Langevin equation, we present an analytic framework for active Brownian motion with memory delay assuming time-dependent friction kernels for both translational and orientational degrees of freedom to account for the time-delayed response of a viscoelastic medium. Analytical results are obtained for the orientational correlation function, mean displacement, and mean-square displacement which we evaluate in particular for a Maxwell fluid characterized by a kernel which decays exponentially in time. Further, we identify a memory-induced delay between the effective self-propulsion force and the particle orientation which we quantify in terms of a special dynamical correlation function. In principle, our predictions can be verified for an active colloidal particle in various viscoelastic environments such as a polymer solution.

Brownian particles driven by spatially periodic noise

We discuss the dynamics of a Brownian particle under the influence of a spatially periodic noise strength in one dimension using analytical theory and computer simulations. In the absence of a deterministic force, the Langevin equation can be integrated formally exactly. We determine the short- and long-time behaviour of the mean displacement (MD) and mean-squared displacement (MSD). In particular, we find a very slow dynamics for the mean displacement, scaling as [Formula: see text] with time t. Placed under an additional external periodic force near the critical tilt value we compute the stationary current obtained from the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation and identify an essential singularity if the minimum of the noise strength is zero. Finally, in order to further elucidate the effect of the random periodic driving on the diffusion process, we introduce a phase factor in the spatial noise with respect to the external periodic force and identify the value of the phase shift for which the random force exerts its strongest effect on the long-time drift velocity and diffusion coefficient.
