Enhanced Catalytic Denitrification Performance of Ruthenium-based Catalysts by Hydrogen Spillover from a Palladium Promoter

Potassium regulating electronic state of zirconia supported palladium catalyst and hydrogen spillover for improved acetylene hydrogenation

High-selectivity acetylene hydrogenation to produce ethylene is an important issue of removing acetylene impurity in ethylene for industrial polyethylene production. Developing high-efficiency catalyst with excellent ethylene selectivity and catalytic durability is desirable but still challenging. In this work, potassium doped palladium catalysts supported on zirconia with different K contents (Pd/ZrO2-xK) have been developed to catalyze acetylene hydrogenation, the Pd/ZrO2-16K exhibits impressive catalytic performance with acetylene conversion of 100 %, ethylene selectivity of 81 % and high catalytic durability. In situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), in situ synchrotron radiation photoionization mass spectrometry (SR-PIMS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that K doping effectively weakens the adsorption of ethylene by regulating the electronic state of catalyst to improve ethylene selectivity and substantially lowers the barriers of hydrogen activation and transfer reactions to favor hydrogen spillover, thus conferring a remarkably improved durability on the Pd/ZrO2-16K catalysts.

Interfacial built-in electric-field for boosting energy conversion electrocatalysis

The formation of a built-in electric field (BIEF) can induce electron-rich and electron-poor counterparts to synergistically modify electronic configurations and optimize the binding strengths with intermediates, thereby leading to outstanding electrocatalytic performance. Herein, a critical review regarding the concept, modulation strategies, and applications of BIEFs is comprehensively summarized, which begins with the fundamental concepts, together with the advantages of BIEF for boosting electrocatalytic reactions. Then, a systematic summary of the advanced strategies for the modulation of BIEF along with the in-detail mechanisms in its formation are also added. Finally, the applications of BIEF in driving electrocatalytic reactions and some cascade systems for illustrating the conclusive role from the induced BIEF are also systematically discussed, followed by perspectives on the future deployment and opportunity of the BIEF design.

Regulation of the Work Function Difference Promotes In Situ Phase Transition of WO3-x for Efficient Formate Electrooxidation

Direct formate fuel cells (DFFCs) have drawn tremendous attention because they are environmentally benign and have good safety. However, the lack of advanced catalysts for formate electrooxidation hinders the development and applications of DFFCs. Herein, we report a strategy of regulating the metal-substrate work function difference to effectively promote the transfer of adsorbed hydrogen (Had), thus enhancing formate electrooxidation in alkaline solutions. By introducing rich oxygen vacancies, the obtained catalysts of Pd/WO3-x-R show outstanding formate electrooxidation activity, exhibiting an extremely high peak current of 15.50 mA cm-2 with a lower peak potential of 0.63 V. In situ electrochemical Fourier transform infrared and in situ Raman measurements verify an enhanced in situ phase transition from WO3-x to HxWO3-x during the formate oxidation reaction process over the Pd/WO3-x-R catalyst. The results of experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the work function difference (ΔΦ) between the metal (Pd) and substrate (WO3-x) would be regulated by inducing oxygen vacancies in the substrate, resulting in improved hydrogen spillover at the interface of the catalyst, which is essentially responsible for the observed high performance of formate oxidation. Our findings provide a novel strategy of rationally designing efficient formate electrooxidation catalysts.

Intensifying Hydrogen Spillover for Boosting Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Hydrogen spillover has attracted increasing interests in the field of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in recent years because of their distinct reaction mechanism and beneficial terms for simultaneously weakening the strong hydrogen adsorption on metal and strengthening the weak hydrogen adsorption on support. By taking advantageous merits of efficient hydrogen transfer, hydrogen spillover-based binary catalysts have been widely investigated, which paves a new way for boosting the development of hydrogen production by water electrolysis. In this paper, we summarize the recent progress of this interesting field by focusing on the advanced strategies for intensifying the hydrogen spillover towards HER. In addition, the challenging issues and some perspective insights in the future development of hydrogen spillover-based electrocatalysts are also systematically discussed.
