Boron nitride nanosheets wrapped by reduced graphene oxide for promoting polysulfides adsorption in lithium-sulfur batteries

Squaraine-linked zwitterionic COF modified LLZTO nanoparticles for high performance polymer composite electrolytes in Li-S batteries

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are severely restricted for practical application due to the polysulfide shuttle effect, Li dendrites and thermal runaway. The use of PEO-based polymer composite electrolytes (PCEs) as an alternative strategy suffers from limited lithium-ion conductivity with deficient long-range transfer route. Herein, Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) nanoparticles modified with an in situ-synthesized zwitterionic covalent organic framework layer (denoted as LLZTO@HUT4) were introduced into PEO-based PCEs. Zwitterionic HUT4 modified the lithiophobic LiOH/Li2CO3 layer on the surface of LLZTO nanoparticles, which could notably promote Li+ ion transport for superior electrochemical performance of PCEs. Additionally, the intermediate layer HUT4 located between LLZTO and PEO could further improve the mechanical properties of electrolytes due to the enhanced inorganic/organic interface compatibility and intermolecular interaction. As a result, the obtained LLZTO@HUT4-15%/PEO electrolyte exhibited a competent ionic conductivity of 0.73 mS cm-1 with a Li+ transference number of up to 0.74 at 60 °C. The assembled S@CNT|LLZTO@HUT4-15%/PEO|Li coin cell delivered a considerable initial discharge capacity of 1018 mA h g-1 at 0.2 C, with approximately 92.1% capacity retention after 100 cycles, elucidating an obviously suppressed shuttle effect.

Nano-sulfur confined in a 3D carbon nanotube/graphene network as a free-standing cathode for high-performance Li-S batteries

A free-standing nano-sulfur-based carbon nanotube/graphene (S/CNT/G) film with a conductive interlinked three-dimensional (3D) nanoarchitecture is fabricated via a facile solution-based method. This 3D multidimensional carbon-sulfur network combines three different nanoarchitectures, as follows: zero-dimensional sulfur nanoparticles, one-dimensional carbon nanotubes, and two-dimensional graphene. The CNTs with a one-dimensional structure act as a conductive matrix, and graphene with two-dimensional sheets is intercalated into the CNT scaffold to build a 3D structure, extending in an additional dimension to provide improved restriction for sulfur/polysulfides. Zero-dimensional sulfur nanoparticles are anchored uniformly on the interpenetrative 3D carbon framework to form a free-standing cathode. Moreover, this well-designed S/CNT/G film is flexible, highly conductive, binder free and current collector free. When directly used as a flexible cathode electrode, the synthesized S/CNT/G film delivers both excellent long-term cycling and high-rate performances. A high initial capacity of 948 mA h g^-1 is obtained, and subsequently, a reversible discharge capacity of 593 mA h g^-1 over 200 cycles is achieved at 0.5C. Even at a high rate of 3C, the S/CNT/G film with a 50 wt% sulfur content still exhibits a discharge capacity of 598 mA h g^-1. These results demonstrate the great potential of the S/CNT/G nanocomposite as a flexible and binder-free cathode for high performance Li-S batteries.

Amino Acid-Assisted Sand-Milling Exfoliation of Boron Nitride Nanosheets for High Thermally Conductive Thermoplastic Polyurethane Composites

Boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) show excellent thermal, electrical, optical, and mechanical properties. They are often used as fillers in polymers to prepare thermally conductive composites, which are used in the production of materials for thermal management, such as electronic packaging. Aside from the van der Waals force, there are some ionic bond forces between hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) layers that result in high energy consumption and make BNNSs easily agglomerate. To overcome this issue, L-lysine (Lys) was first employed as a stripping assistant for preparing graft-functionalized BNNSs via mechanical sand-milling technology, and the obtained Lys@BNNSs can be added into thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) by solution mixing and hot-pressing methods to prepare thermally conductive composites. This green and scalable method of amino acid-assisted sand-milling can not only exfoliate the bulk h-BN successfully into few-layer BNNSs but also graft Lys onto the surface or edges of BNNSs through Lewis acid–base interaction. Furthermore, benefiting from Lys’s highly reactive groups and biocompatibility, the compatibility between functionalized BNNSs and the TPU matrix is significantly enhanced, and the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the composite are remarkably increased. When the load of Lys@BNNSs is 3 wt%, the thermal conductivity and tensile strength of the obtained composites are 90% and 16% higher than those of the pure TPU, respectively. With better thermal and mechanical properties, Lys@BNNS/TPU composites can be used as a kind of heat dissipation material and have potential applications in the field of thermal management materials.

Recent Progress in Fabrication and Application of BN Nanostructures and BN-Based Nanohybrids

Due to its unique physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, such as a low specific density, large specific surface area, excellent thermal stability, oxidation resistance, low friction, good dispersion stability, enhanced adsorbing capacity, large interlayer shear force, and wide bandgap, hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) nanostructures are of great interest in many fields. These include, but are not limited to, (i) heterogeneous catalysts, (ii) promising nanocarriers for targeted drug delivery to tumor cells and nanoparticles containing therapeutic agents to fight bacterial and fungal infections, (iii) reinforcing phases in metal, ceramics, and polymer matrix composites, (iv) additives to liquid lubricants, (v) substrates for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, (vi) agents for boron neutron capture therapy, (vii) water purifiers, (viii) gas and biological sensors, and (ix) quantum dots, single photon emitters, and heterostructures for electronic, plasmonic, optical, optoelectronic, semiconductor, and magnetic devices. All of these areas are developing rapidly. Thus, the goal of this review is to analyze the critical mass of knowledge and the current state-of-the-art in the field of BN-based nanomaterial fabrication and application based on their amazing properties.
