Hierarchical NiCo-LDH core/shell homostructural electrodes with MOF-derived shell for electrochemical energy storage

Microplasma-assisted construction of cross-linked network hierarchical structure of NiMoO4 nanorods @NiCo-LDH nanosheets for electrochemical sensing of non-enzymatic H2O2 in food

The accumulation of small doses of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into food can cause many diseases in the human body, and it is urgent to develop efficient detection methods of H2O2. Herein, the hierarchical structure composite of NiCo-LDH nanosheets crosslinked NiMoO4 nanorods was grown in situ on carbon cloth (NiMoO4 NRs@NiCo-LDH NSs/CC) by micro-plasma assisted hydrothermal method. Thanks to the synergistic effect of three metals and (NiMoO4 NRs@NiCo-LDH NSs/CC) provided by nanorods/nanosheets hierarchical structure, NiMoO4 NRs@NiCo-LDH NSs/CC exposes more active sites and achieves rapid electron transfer. The H2O2 electrochemical sensor was constructed as the working electrode with a linear range of 1 μmol L-1 to 9.0 mmol L-1 and detection limit of 112 nmol L-1. In addition, the sensor has been successfully applied to the detection of H2O2 in food samples, the recovery rate is 95.2%-106.62%, RSD < 4.89%.

In situ construction of NiCo-layered double hydroxide nanobranches with adjustable layer spacing on micro-sized carbon plate for high-performance supercapacitors

Binary layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are an emerging class of materials for supercapacitors owing to their tunable topological structure and excellent theoretical energy storage capacity. However, aggregation and restacking cause a decrease in the interlayer distance of LDHs, resulting in a considerable drop in real specific capacitance. To address this, large-sized anions are intercalated into the interlayer space. Herein, we constructed 3D top-tangled NiCo-LDH nanobranches in situ on a biomass micro-sized carbon plate (CP). By varying the amount of benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid (BDC), we prepared a BDC-intercalated CP/NiCo-LDH composite material with adjustable interlayer spacing. Remarkably, the CP/NiCo-LDH-BDC(0.03) composite exhibited excellent electrochemical properties (1530 F g-1/212.5 mAh/g at 1 A/g). It retained 88.36 % capacity after 5000 charge-discharge cycles. The constructed CP/NiCo-LDH-BDC(0.03)//CP asymmetric supercapacitor showed excellent gravimetric capacitance (123 F g-1/54.7 mAh/g at 1 A/g) and energy density (43.7 Wh kg-1 at 800 W kg-1). Furthermore, two asymmetric capacitors connected in series powered a small lightbulb for 2 min, even in a bent state. These findings show that the fabricated CP and CP/NiCo-LDH-BDC(0.03) electrode materials can be applied in flexible and wearable energy storage systems.

Highly selective and efficient Pb2+ capture using PO4-loaded 3D-NiFe layer double hydroxides derived from MIL-88A

Lead (Pb) contamination in water requires improved decontamination technologies. The addition of phosphate to precipitate Pb2+ is a widely used method for remediating Pb in soil and water, though it has certain limitations. This study focuses on novel 3D mesoporous layered double hydroxide (LDH) sorbents functionalized with phosphate anions for Pb2+ removal from contaminated waters. Our innovative strategy involves converting a sacrificial template metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) structure (MIL-88A(Fe)) into NixFe LDH, followed by an anion exchange reaction with phosphate anions. This process preserves the 3D microrod architecture of MIL-88A and prevents deleterious LDH particle aggregation. The synthesis results in stable microrod crystals, 1-2 μm long, composed of 3D assemblies of NixFe-PO4 LDH nanoplatelets with a specific surface area exceeding 110 m2/g. The novel LDH materials display fast adsorption kinetics (pseudo-second order model) and remarkably high Pb2+ removal performances (Langmuir isotherm model) with a capacity of 538 mg/g, surpassing other reported adsorbents. LDH-PO4 exhibits high selectivity for Pb2+ over competing ions like Ni2+ and Cd2+ (selectivity order is: Pb2+ > Ni2+ > Cd2+). Removal of Pb2+ from NixFeLDH/88A-PO4 involves various mechanisms, including surface complexation and surface precipitation of lead phosphate or lead hydroxide phases as revealed by structural characterization techniques.

Hollow dodecahedral Zn0.3Cd0.7S@NiCo-mixed metal oxide p-n heterojunction with high-efficiency photocatalytic hydrogen production activity

The growing demand for clean and sustainable energy has driven extensive research into efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen production. However, many semiconductor photocatalysts in this field still face the challenges such as wide band gap, limited visible light absorption, and inefficient separation and transport of photoinduced charges. In this study, nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) was synthesized using an "etch-and-grow" method with zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a sacrificial template, followed by high-temperature calcination to produce nickel-cobalt mixed metal oxide (NiCo-MMO). Zn0.3Cd0.7S quantum dots were used to modify NiCo-MMO resulting in a hollow dodecahedral Zn0.3Cd0.7S@NiCo-MMO composite photocatalyst. In hydrogen production performance test, the optimized Zn0.3Cd0.7S@NiCo-MMO exhibited excellent performance (8177.5 μmol·g-1·h-1) and demonstrated good cycling stability. The hollow dodecahedral structure of the Zn0.3Cd0.7S@NiCo-MMO enhanced the light trapping ability and provided large surface area. The p-n heterojunction formed within Zn0.3Cd0.7S@NiCo-MMO accelerated carrier separation and transfer, effectively inhibited the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and significantly improved the hydrogen production activity.

In Situ Construction of NiCoMn-LDH Derived from Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework on Eggshell-Like Carbon Skeleton for High-Performance Flexible Supercapacitors

Active compounds based on LDH (ternary layered double hydroxide) are considered the perfect supercapacitor electrode materials on account of their superior electrochemical qualities and distinct structural characteristics, and flexible supercapacitors are an ideal option as an energy source for wearable electronics. However, the prevalent aggregation effect of LDH materials results in significantly compromised actual specific capacitance, which limits its broad practical applications. In this research, a 3D eggshell-like interconnected porous carbon (IPC) framework with confinement and isolation capability is designed and synthesized by using glucose as the carbon source to disperse the LDH active material and enhance the conductivity of the composite material. Second, by constructing NiCoMn-LDH nanocage structure based on ZIF-67 (zeolitic imidazolate framework-67) at the nanometer scale the obtained IPC/NiCoMn-LDH electrode material can expose more active sites, which allows to achieve excellent specific capacitance (2236 F g-1/ 310.6 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1), good rate as well as the desired cycle stability (85.9% of the initial capacitance upon 5000 cycles test). The constructed IPC/NiCoMn-LDH//IPC ASC (asymmetric supercapacitor) exhibits superior capacitive property (135 F g-1/60.1 mAh g-1 at 0.5 A g-1) as well as desired energy density (40 Wh kg-1 at 800 W kg-1).

MOF-based/derived catalysts for electrochemical overall water splitting

Water-splitting electrocatalysis has gained increasing attention as a promising strategy for developing renewable energy in recent years, but its high overpotential caused by the unfavorable thermodynamics has limited its widespread implementation. Therefore, there is an urgent need to design catalytic materials with outstanding activity and stability that can overcome the high overpotential and thus improve the electrocatalytic efficiency. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based and/or derived materials are widely used as water-splitting catalysts because of their easily controlled structures, abundant heterointerfaces and increased specific surface area. Herein, some recent research findings on MOFs-based/derived materials are summarized and presented. First, the mechanism and evaluation parameters of electrochemical water splitting are described. Subsequently, advanced modulation strategies for designing MOFs-based/derived catalysts and their catalytic performance toward water splitting are summarized. In particular, the correlation between chemical composition/structural functionalization and catalytic performance is highlighted. Finally, the future outlook and challenges for MOFs materials are also addressed.

Core-shell heterostructured Ni(OH)2@activation Zn-Co-Ni layered double hydroxides electrode for flexible all-solid-state coaxial fiber-shaped asymmetric supercapacitors

The increasing requirements for wearable and portable electronics are driving the interests of high performance fiber supercapacitor. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is broadly used in electrode materials, owing to the adjustability of components and the unique lamellar structure. However, limited active sites and poor electrical conductivity hinder its applications. Herein, the core-shell heterostructured Ni(OH)2@activation Zn-Co-Ni layered double hydroxides (Ni(OH)2@A-ZnCoNi-LDH) electrode was fabricated by loading pseudocapacitance material on the A-ZnCoNi-LDH to improve the electrochemical performance. Significantly, benefits from the synergistic effect of the multi-metal ions and the core-shell heterostructure, the electrodes demonstrated a capacitance of 2405 mF·cm-2 at 1 mA·cm-2. Furthermore, Ni(OH)2@A-ZnCoNi-LDH was used as the core electrode and carbon nanotube (CNT) film coated with Fe2O3@reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was wrapped around the core electrode to assemble coaxial fiber asymmetric supercapacitor, which illustrated an ultrahigh energy density of 177.7 µWh·cm-2 at 0.75 mW·cm-2. In particular, after consecutive charging and discharging 7000 cycles, the capacitance retention of the device was 95 %, indicating the excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the device with high flexibility can be woven into textiles in different shapes. The fabricated device has an excellent development prospect as an energy source in wearable electronic devices.

NiCo-LDH coupled with 2D ZIF-derived Co nitrogen doped carbon nanosheet arrays as a self-supporting electrocatalyst for detection of formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is susceptible to illegal addition to foodstuffs to extend their shelf life due to its antimicrobial, preservative and bleaching properties. In this study, a self-supporting "nanosheet on nanosheet" arrays electrocatalyst with core-shell heterostructure was prepared in situ by coupling NiCo layer double hydroxide with 2D ZIF derived Co-nitrogen-doped porous carbon on carbon cloth (Co-N/C@NiCo-LDH NSAs/CC). Co-N/C nanosheet arrays act as a scaffold core with good electrical conductivity, providing more NiCo-LDH nucleation sites to avoid NiCo-LDH agglomeration, thus having fast mass/charge transfer performance. While the NiCo-LDH nanosheet arrays shell with high specific surface area provide more active sites for electrochemical reactions. As an electrocatalytic sensing electrode, Co-N/C@NiCo-LDH NSAs/CC has a wide linear range of 1 μM to 13 mM for formaldehyde detection, and the detection limit is 82 nM. Besides, the sensor has been applied to the detection of formaldehyde in food samples with satisfactory results.

Controlled establishment of advanced local high-entropy NiCoMnFe-based layered double hydroxide for zinc batteries and low-temperature supercapacitors

The development of high-performance electrodes is essential for improving the charge storage performance of rechargeable devices. In this study, local high-entropy C, N co-doped NiCoMnFe-based layered double hydroxide (C/N-NiCoMnFe-LDH, C/N-NCMF) were designed using a novel method. Multi-component synergistic effects can dramatically modulate the surface electron density, crystalline structure, and band-gap of the electrode. Thus, the electrical conductivity, electron transfer, and affinity for the electrolyte can be optimized. Additionally, the C/N-NCMF yielded a high specific capacitance (1454F·g-1) at 1 A·g-1. The electrode also exhibited excellent cycling stability, with 62 % capacitance retention after 5000 cycles. Moreover, the assembled Zn||C/N-NCMF battery and the C/N-NCMF//AC hybrid supercapacitor yielded excellent energy densities of 63.1 and 35.4 Wh·kg-1 at power densities of 1000 and 825 W·kg-1, and superior cycling performance with 69 % and 88.7 % capacitance retention after 1000 and 30,000 cycles, respectively. Furthermore, the electrode maintained high electrochemical activity and stability and ensured high energy density, power density, and cycling stability of the rechargeable devices even at a low temperature (-20 °C). This study paves a new pathway for regulating the electrochemical performance of LDH-based electrodes.

Cobalt coordinated carbon quantum dots boosting the performance of NiCo-LDH for energy storage

Transition metal layered double hydroxides have extremely high specific capacitances but suffer from poor rate performance and cycling stability due to their low conductivity and structural stability. In this study, cobalt-coordinated carbon quantum dots (CoCQDs) were designed and synthesized to enhance the energy storage performance of nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDH). Nickel and cobalt ions were co-electrodeposited with the CoCQDs to form a NiCo-LDH based composite electrode (denoted as CoC@LDH). Since the CoCQDs participated in the formation of the NiCo-LDH, the carbon quantum dots could be strongly bonded to the NiCo-LDH nanosheets through coordination interactions. Thus, the conductivity as well as the structure stability of the NiCo-LDH was effectively improved, which greatly boosted the cycle stability and rate performance of the NiCo-LDH. Several CoCQDs with different Co contents (nCoCQDs, n = 0.5, 1.0, 2.0) were fabricated and their effects on the performance of the resultant electrodes nCoC@LDH were investigated. The 1.0CoC@LDH electrode exhibited an impressive specific capacitance of 1867 F g-1 at 1 A-g-1, along with a significantly enhanced capacitance retention of 84.6 % after 6000 cycles at 5 A g-1 (benchmark 49.5 %). This ingenious design provides a new avenue for fabricating pseudo-capacitive materials with unprecedented high performance.

CoCx‑induced interfacial octahedral Co2+ sites of NiCo-LDH electrode with improved faradic reactivity toward high-performance supercapacitor

Battery-like electrode materials are characterized by large theoretical capacitance but suffer from poor surface reactivity and insufficient electroactive sites thus limiting their practical charge storage capacity. To overcome this challenge, an effective strategy for vacancy modulation on battery-like electrode materials is necessary. Herein, we report for the first time an elaborately designed three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical heterostructure consisting of CoCx@NiCo-LDH on conductive nickel foam as a freestanding supercapacitor electrode. Benefiting from the weakening of the coordination of CoO bonds, the CoCx structure induces in-situ reconstruction of the NiCo-LDH lattice, resulting in the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies (interfacial octahedral Co2+ sites) that lower the OH- adsorption energy as determined by the density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The resulting CoCx@NiCo-LDH/NF electrode exhibits an ultrahigh rate capability (2330 mF cm-2 at 0.3 mA cm-2, with capacitance retention of 51.5 % at 30 mA cm-2) and remarkable cycling performance (capacitance retention of 81.6 % after 10,000 cycles). Additionally, the assembled asymmetric devices deliver an extremely high energy density of 246 μWh cm-2 at the power density of 798 μW cm-2, with 87.8 % capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 8 mA cm-2. Overall, this study presents a simple yet effective strategy to construct high-performance battery-like electrodes for potential applications in energy storage, transportation, and communication.

Hybrid ternary NiCoCu layered double hydroxide electrocatalyst for alkaline hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction

This study focuses on the electrochemical properties of layered double hydroxide (LDH), which is a specific structure of NiCoCu LDH, and the active species therein, rather than the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of ternary NiCoCu LDH materials. Six types of catalysts were synthesized using the reflux condenser method and coated onto a nickel foam support electrode. Compared to bare, binary, and ternary electrocatalysts, the NiCoCu LDH electrocatalyst exhibited higher stability. The double layer capacitance (Cdl) of the NiCoCu LDH (12.3 mF cm^-2) is greater than that of the bare and binary electrocatalysts, indicating that the NiCoCu LDH electrocatalyst has a larger electrochemical active surface area. In addition, the NiCoCu LDH electrocatalyst has a lower overpotential of 87 mV and 224 mV for the HER and OER, respectively, indicating its excellent activity with the bare and binary electrocatalysts. Finally, it is demonstrated that the structural characteristics of the NiCoCu LDH contribute to its excellent stability in long-term HER and OER tests.

Metal-organic framework-derived bird's nest-like capsules for phosphorous small molecules towards flame retardant polyurea composites

The loading treatment of phosphorus flame retardants can mitigate their migration and plasticization effect. However, designing suitable carriers has remained a great challenge. Herein, two kinds of Co-based isomers, namely cobalt-cobalt layered double hydroxides (CoCo-LDH) and cobalt basic carbonate (CBC), were synthesized by employing ZIF-67 as a self-template, assemblied into two different nanostructures namely multi-yolk@shell CBC@CoCo-LDH (m-CBC@LDH) and solid CBC nanoparticles by facilely tuning the reaction time, which were employed as carriers, respectively. Subsequently, triphenyl phosphate (TPP)-loaded m-CBC@LDH (m-CBC-P@LDH) was prepared using TPP as the guest. The m-CBC@LDH with high specific surface area and hollow structure exhibited up to more than 30% of TPP loading. The peak of heat release rate and total heat release of polyurea composite blended with 5 wt% m-CBC-P@LDH reduced by 41.7% and 20.6% respectively, and the mechanical properties were less damaged. This work complements a feasible approach for preparation of metal-organic frameworks-derived flame retardant carriers.

Alkali-Etched NiCoAl-LDH with Improved Electrochemical Performance for Asymmetric Supercapacitors

Hydrotalcite, first found in natural ores, has important applications in supercapacitors. NiCoAl-LDH, as a hydrotalcite-like compound with good crystallinity, is commonly synthesized by a hydrothermal method. Al3+ plays an important role in the crystallization of hydrotalcite and can provide stable trivalent cations, which is conducive to the formation of hydrotalcite. However, aluminum and its hydroxides are unstable in a strong alkaline electrolyte; therefore, a secondary alkali treatment is proposed in this work to produce cation vacancies. The hydrophilicity of the NiCoAl-OH surface with cation vacancy has been greatly improved, which is conducive to the wetting and infiltration of electrolyte in water-based supercapacitors. At the same time, cation vacancies generate a large number of defects as active sites for energy storage. As a result, the specific capacity of the NiCoAl-OH electrode after 10,000 cycles can be maintained at 94.1%, which is much better than the NiCoAl-LDH material of 74%.

Design strategy for high-performance bifunctional electrode materials with heterogeneous structures formed by hydrothermal sulfur etching

The synthesis of efficient, stable, and green multifunctional electrode materials is a long-standing challenge for modern society in the field of energy storage and conversion. To this end, we successfully synthesized five bimetallic precursor materials with excellent performance by hydrothermal reaction with the assistance of a high concentration of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and then, sulfide etched the lamellar precursor materials among them to obtain the one-dimensional heterostructured samples. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the bimetal and the continuous electron/ion transport structure, the samples displayed excellent bifunctional activity in supercapacitor and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Regarding supercapacitors, the exceptional performance of 2817.2 F g^-1 at 1 A g^-1 was demonstrated, while the asymmetric supercapacitors made showed an extraordinary energy density of 150.2 Wh kg^-1 at a power density of 618.5 W kg^-1 and outstanding cycling performance (94.74% capacity retention after 20,000 cycles at 10 A g^-1). Simultaneously, a wearable flexible electrode that can be wrapped around a finger was coated on a carbon cloth and was found to light up a 0.5-m-long strip of light. Moreover, it exhibited an ultralow oxygen reduction overpotential of 249 mV at 10 mA cm^-2. Hence, our work provides a facile strategy to modulate the synthesis of heterogeneous structured sulfides with a continuous electron/ion transport pathway, which possesses excellent oxygen reduction electrocatalytic performance while meeting superior supercapacitor performance. Such work provides an effective approach for the construction of multifunctional electrochemical energy materials.

Waste Adsorbent-Derived Interconnected Hierarchical Attapulgite@Carbon/NiCo Layered Double Hydroxide Nanocomposites for Advanced Supercapacitors

The attapulgite@carbon/NiCo layered double hydroxide nanocomposites based on waste adsorbents are manufactured via simple and eco-friendly calcination and hydrothermal methods, by which they would be considerable electrode materials for advanced supercapacitors. To achieve sustainable development, the spent tetracycline-loaded attapulgite can act as a cost-effective available carbon source as well as a matrix material for carbon species and NiCo layered double hydroxide simultaneously. A controlled amount of attapulgite@carbon could be used to regulate the electrochemical properties of nanocomposites. The generated electrodes possess superior electrochemical properties with a specific capacitance of 2013.8 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1, a retention rate of 87.7% at 5 A g^-1, and a cyclic stability of 64.9% for 4000 cycles at 5 A g^-1. Thus, the asymmetric supercapacitor device assembled with attapulgite@carbon/NiCo layered double hydroxide nanocomposites||active carbon shows a maximum capacitance of 231.3 F g^-1 at 0.5 A g^-1, with a preeminent energy density of 82.2 Wh kg^-1 when its power density is 4318 W kg^-1. This approach would contribute to the development of supercapacitors in an efficient and effective manner, as well as provide a feasible strategy for solving tetracycline pollution and recycling waste adsorbents to achieve sustainable development.

Synthesis of CNT@CoS/NiCo Layered Double Hydroxides with Hollow Nanocages to Enhance Supercapacitors Performance

One of the key factors to improve electrochemical properties is to find exceptional electrode materials. In this work, the nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide (CNT@CoS/NiCo-LDH) with the structure of a hollow nanocage was prepared by etching CNT@CoS with zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a template. The results show that the addition of nickel has a great influence on the structure, morphology and chemical properties of materials. The prepared material CNT@CoS/NiCo-LDH-100 (C@CS/NCL-100) inherited the rhombic dodecahedral shape of ZIF-67 well and the CNTs were evenly interspersed among the rhombic dodecahedrons. The presence of CNTs improved the conductivity and surface area of the samples. The C@CS/NCL-100 demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 2794.6 F·g^-1 at 1 A·g^-1. Furthermore, as an assemble device, the device of C@CS/NCL-100 as a positive electrode exhibits a relatively high-energy density of 35.64 Wh·kg^-1 at a power density of 750 W·kg^-1 Further, even at the high-power density of 3750 W·kg^-1, the energy density can still retain 26.38 Wh·kg^-1. Hence, the superior performance of C@CS/NCL-100 can be ascribed to the synergy among CNTs, CoS and NiCo LDH, as well as the excellent three-dimensional structure obtained by used ZIF-67 as a template.
