Synergy of heterojunction and interfacial strain for boosting photocatalytic H2 evolution of black phosphorus nanosheets

Boosted photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of S-scheme N-doped CeO2-δ@ZnIn2S4 heterostructure photocatalyst

The advancement of highly effective heterojunction photocatalysts with improved charge separation and transfer has become a crucial scientific perspective for utilizing solar energy. In this study, we developed the S-scheme heterostructure by depositing N-doped CeO2-δ (NC) nanoparticles onto two-dimensional ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) nanosheets via hydrolysis strategy for significantly enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. The optimal H2 generation rate of ∼ 798 μmol g-1 h-1 was achieved for NC-3@ZIS under solar light irradiation, which is about 18 and 2 times higher than those of pristine CeO2 (∼44 μmol g-1 h-1) and ZIS (∼358 μmol g-1 h-1), respectively. The photogenerated electrons from NC interact with the photogenerated holes of ZIS driven by an internal electric field, confirmed by In-situ KPFM, DFT calculation, and XPS results. According to EPR and photoelectrochemical measurements, NC-3@ZIS composite shows dramatically high separation efficiency of photogenerated charge carriers. This study provides a new approach for developing non-noble metal S-scheme heterojunctions with enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution.

Strain Engineering of Cd0.5Zn0.5S Nanocrystal for Efficient Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution from Wasted Plastic

The challenge of synthesizing nanocrystal photocatalysts with adjustable lattice strain for effective waste-to-energy conversion is addressed in this study. Cd0.5Zn0.5S (CZS) nanocrystals are synthesized by a simple solvothermal method, regulation of the ratio between N, N-dimethylformamide, and water solvent are shown to provoke expansion and contraction, inducing an adjustable lattice strain ranging from -1.2% to 5.6%. With the hydrolyzed wasted plastic as a sacrificial agent, the 5.6% lattice-strain CZS exhibited a robust hydrogen evolution activity of 1.09 mmol m-2 h-1 (13.83 mmol g-1 h-1), 4.5 times that of pristine CZS. Characterizations and density functional theory calculation demonstrated that lattice expansion increases the spatial distance between the valence band maximum and conduction band minimum, thus reducing carrier recombination and promoting charge transfer. Additionally, lattice expansion induces surface S vacancies and adsorbed OH groups, further enhancing redox reactions. This study focuses on the synchronous regulation of crystal structure, charge separation/transport, and surface reactions through lattice strain engineering, which providing a reference for the rational design of new photocatalysts for effective waste-to-energy conversion.

Stabilizing electron-rich Ni single-atoms on black phosphorus nanosheets boosts photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction

The development of unique single-atom catalysts with electron-rich feature is essential to promoting the photocatalytic CO2 reduction, yet remains a big challenge. Here, a conceptionally new single-atom catalyst constructed from atomically dispersed Ni-P3 species on black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets (BP-Ni) is synthesized for realizing highly efficient visible-light-driven CO2 reduction when trapping photogenerated electrons from homogeneous light absorbers in the presence of triethanolamine as the sacrificial agent. Both the experimental and theoretical calculation data reveal that the Ni-P3 species on BP nanosheets own the electron-rich feature that can improve the photogenerated charge separation efficiency and lower the activation barrier of CO2 conversion. This unique feature makes BP-Ni exhibit the much higher activity as cocatalyst in the photocatalytic CO2 reduction than BP nanosheets. The BP-Ni can also be applied as a cocatalyst for enhanced photocatalytic CO2 reduction after combining with CdSe/S colloidal crystal photocatalyst. The present study offers valuable inspirations for the design and construction of effective catalytic sites toward photocatalytic CO2 reduction reactions.

Engineering interface structures for heterojunction photocatalysts

Solar photocatalysis is the most ideal solution to global energy concerns and environmental deterioration nowadays. The heterojunction combination has become one of the most successful and effective strategies to design and manufacture composite photocatalysts. Heterojunction structures are widely documented to markedly improve the photocatalytic behavior of materials by enhancing the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges, widening the light absorption range, and broadening redox potentials, which are attributed to the presence of both build-in electric fields at the interface of two different materials and the complementarity between different electron structures. So far, a large number of heterojunction photocatalytic materials have been reported and applied for water splitting, reduction of carbon dioxide and nitrogen, environmental cleaning, etc. This review outlines the recent accomplishments in the design and modification of interface structures in heterojunction photocatalysts, aiming to provide some useful perspectives for future research in this field.

Review on the Energy Transformation Application of Black Phosphorus and Its Composites

Black phosphorus (BP) is a unique two-dimensional material with excellent conductivity, and a widely tunable bandgap. In recent years, its application in the field of energy has attracted extensive attention, in terms of energy storage, due to its high theoretical specific capacity and excellent conductivity, black phosphorus is widely used as electrode material in battery and supercapacitors, while for energy generating, it has been also used as photocatalyst and electrocatalysts to split water and produce hydrogen. Black phosphorus demonstrates even better stability and catalytic performance through further construction, doping, or heterojunction. This review briefly summarizes the latest research progress of black phosphorus and its composites in energy preparation and storage, as well as ammonia nitrogen fixation, and also looks into the possible development directions in the future.
