Synergistic effect of Mn doping and hollow structure boosting Mn-CoP/Co2P nanotubes as efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Synthesis of Pt-doped CoFe layered double hydroxide derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework for efficient electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), a class of promising metal organic frameworks (MOFs) material, display high porosity and chemical/thermal stability. However, there are problems such as few active sites and restricted exposed active areas, which limit the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of catalysts. Here, starting from zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), we have successfully synthesized Pt-doped CoFe layered double hydroxide (Pt/CoFe LDH) catalysts for efficient OER catalysis. The obtained Pt/CoFe LDH-4 catalysts provides large surface areas and abundant active sites, which further improves the OER performance. In detail, the Pt/CoFe LDH-4 exhibits a lower overpotential of 263 mV at a current density of 40 mA cm-2, in 1 M KOH solution, the stability of the catalyst exceeds 120 h at this current density, far superior to commercial catalyst RuO2. This study describes a new design idea for synthesis of LDH catalytic materials with low noble metal doping, which broadens the way to the synthesis of robust OER catalysts derived from ZIF-67.

Antibiotic Degradation via Fenton Process Assisted by a 3-Electron Oxygen Reduction Reaction Pathway Catalyzed by Bio-Carbon-Manganese Composites

Bio-carbon-manganese composites obtained from olive mill wastewater were successfully prepared using manganese acetate as the manganese source and olive wastewater as the carbon precursor. The samples were characterized chemically and texturally by N2 and CO2 adsorption at 77 K and 273 K, respectively, by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical characterization was carried out by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The samples were evaluated in the electro-Fenton degradation of tetracycline in a typical three-electrode system under natural conditions of pH and temperature (6.5 and 25 °C). The results show that the catalysts have a high catalytic power capable of degrading tetracycline (about 70%) by a three-electron oxygen reduction pathway in which hydroxyl radicals are generated in situ, thus eliminating the need for two catalysts (ORR and Fenton).

Coordination Engineering of Carbon Dots and Mn in Co-Based Phosphides for Highly Efficient Seawater Splitting at Ampere-Level Current Density

Direct electrolysis of seawater to generate hydrogen is an attractive approach for storing renewable energy. However, direct seawater splitting suffers from low current density and limited operating stability, which severely hinders its industrialization. Herein, a promising strategy is reported to obtain a nano needle-like array catalyst-CDs-Mn-CoxP on nickel foam, in which the Mn─O─C bond tightly binds Mn, Carbon dots (CDs), and CoxP together. The coordination engineering of CDs and Mn not only effectively regulates the electronic structure of CoxP, but also endows the as-prepared catalyst with selectivity and marked long-term stability at ampere-level current density. Low overpotentials of 208 and 447 mV are required to achieve 1000 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in simulated seawater, respectively. Cell potentials of 1.78 and 1.86 V are needed to reach 500 and 1000 mA cm-2 in alkaline seawater along with excellent durability for 350 h. DFT studies have verified that the introduction of Mn and CDs effectively shifts the d-band center of Co-3d toward higher energy, thereby strengthening the adsorption of intermediates and enhancing the catalytic activity. This study sheds light on the development of highly effective and stable catalysts for large-scale seawater electrolysis.

Manganese-Doped Bimetallic (Co,Ni)2P Integrated CoP in N,S Co-Doped Carbon: Unveiling a Compatible Hybrid Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Rational design of highly efficient noble-metal-unbound electrodes for hydrogen and oxygen production at increased current density is crucial for robust water-splitting. A facile hydrothermal and room-temperature aging method is presented, followed by chemical vapor deposition (CVD), to create a self-sacrificed hybrid heterostructure electrocatalyst. This hybrid material, (Mn-(Co,Ni)2P/CoP/(N,S)-C), comprises manganese-doped cobalt nickel phosphide (Mn-(Co,Ni)2P) nanofeathers and cobalt phosphide (CoP) nanocubes embedded in a nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon matrix (N,S)-C on nickel foam. The catalyst exhibits excellent performance in both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER; η10 = 61 mV) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER; η10 = 213 mV) due to abundant active sites, high porosity, and enhanced hetero-interface interaction between Mn-(Co2P-Ni2P) CoP, and (N,S)-C supported by significant synergistic effects observed among different phases through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Impressively, (Mn-(Co,Ni)2P/CoP/(N,S)-C (+,-) shows an extra low cell voltage of 1.49 V@10 mA cm-2. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits remarkable stability at 100 and 300 mA cm-2 when operating as a single stack cell electrolyzer. The superior electrochemical activity is attributed to the enhanced electrode-electrolyte interface among the multiple phases of the hybrid structure.

Amorphization-induced abundant coordinatively unsaturated Ni active sites in NiCo(OH)2 for boosting catalytic OER and HER activities at high current densities for water-electrolysis

The large overpotential required for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the major factors limiting the efficiency of electrochemical water-electrolysis for hydrogen production. In this work, to decrease OER energy barrier and obtain low overpotential, amorphous-crystalline NiCo(OH)2 nanoplates are in-situ grown on nickel foam surface to form a catalyst-based electrode (ac-NiCo(OH)2/NF) for water-electrolysis application. As the inner amorphization of NiCo(OH)2 results in increased electron density of the metal sites, leading to the formation of tensile Ni-O bond, the coordinatively unsaturated Ni sites in the down-shift d-band centers toward Fermi level can lower the antibonding states. This can lead to optimized adsorption and desorption energies for oxygen-containing intermediates for OER. As expected, the prepared ac-NiCo(OH)2/NF electrode presents a low overpotential of 364 mV to deliver 1000 mA cm-2 toward OER with impressively high robust stability. When this electrocatalyst electrode serves as both the anode and cathode, the assembled anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyser only needs a cell voltage of 1.68 V to drive the overall water-electrolysis process at a current density of 10 mA cm-2.

Ir-Doped Bilayer Heterojunction Hollow Nanoboxes for Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

The fabrication of hollow nanoelectrocatalysts with multilayered heterogeneous interfaces, derived from metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, represents a highly efficient strategy that promotes the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Within this research, we successfully synthesized a hollow nanobox of Ir-doped ZIF-67@CoFe PBA with bilayer heterointerfaces. The distinctive structure of Ir-ZIF-67@CoFe PBA provides a substantial number of active sites for reaction intermediates, resulting in improved utilization of precious metals. Furthermore, experimental results indicate the outstanding electrocatalytic performance of the optimized Ir-ZIF-67@CoFe PBA, as indicated by a mere 269 mV overpotential at 10 mA·cm-2, accompanied by a small Tafel slope of 80.1 mV·dec-1. Moreover, the Schottky junction formed between the heterojunction and Ir within Ir-ZIF-67@CoFe PBA accelerates the electron-transfer rate, contributing to its exceptional catalytic performance compared to that of a catalyst derived solely from ZIF-67. This distinctive feature of the catalyst holds tremendous application value.

Heterostructure engineering and ultralow Pt-loaded multicomponent nanocage for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts based on appropriate heterojunction engineering and electronic structure modification for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been extensively recognized as an effective approach to increase the efficiency of water splitting. Herein, ultralow Pt-loaded (1 %) NiCoFeP@NiCoFe-PBA hollow nanocages with well-defined heterointerfaces and modified electronic environment are successfully fabricated. As expected, the obtained Pt-NiCoFeP@NiCoFe-PBA exhibits outstanding performance with a low overpotential of 255 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and a small Tafel slope of 57.2 mV dec^-1. More specifically, the highly open three-dimensional structure, exquisite interior voids and abundant surface defects endow Pt-NiCoFeP@NiCoFe-PBA nanocages with more electrochemical active sites. Meanwhile, experimental results and mechanism studies also reveal that the construction of heterogeneous interfaces as well as incorporation of noble metals could readily induce strong synergistic effects and significantly tailor electronic configurations to optimize the binding energy of the intermediates, thereby achieving prominent OER performance.

Quantum dot-doped CeOx-NiB with modulated electron density as a highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting

Development of economical, efficient and durable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER) holds great promise, but still faces great challenges. Herein, a strategy of doping metal borides with rare earth metal oxides and introducing silicon carbide (SiC) quantum dots has been explored to develop efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts. A novel electrocatalyst consists of SiC quantum dot-decorated CeO_x-NiB supported on nickel foam via a one-step mild electroless plating reaction (denoted as CeO_x-NiB/SiC@NF). Notably, the modulated electron density of the CeO_x-NiB/SiC@NF electrode significantly boosts the electrochemically active surface area and electron transfer, and optimizes the hydrogen/water absorption free energy, which delivers current densities of 50 mA cm^-2 and 10 mA cm^-2 at overpotentials of only 131 mV and 234 mV for the HER and the OER, respectively. The target electrode requires only 1.43 V to provide 10 mA cm^-2 for overall water splitting in 1.0 M KOH. Moreover, the electrode also exhibits good stability and durability at the industrial-grade current density (0.5-1 A cm^-2). This work provides a new idea for the development of efficient and durable non-precious metal catalysts.

S-modified NiFe-phosphate hierarchical hollow microspheres for efficient industrial-level seawater electrolysis

For sustained hydrogen generation from seawater electrolysis, an efficient and specialized catalyst must be designed to cope with the slow anode reaction and chloride ions (Cl^-) corrosion. In this work, an S-modified NiFe-phosphate with hierarchical and hollow microspheres was grown on the NiFe foam skeleton (S-NiFe-Pi/NFF), acting as a bifunctional catalyst to enable industrial-scale seawater electrolysis. The introduction of S distorted the lattice of NiFe-phosphate and regulated the local electronic environment around Ni/Fe active metal, both of which enhanced the electrocatalytic activity. Additionally, the existence of phosphate groups repelled Cl^- on the surface and enhanced corrosion resistance, enabling stable long-term operation in seawater. The double-electrode electrolyzer composed of the hollow-structured S-NiFe-Pi/NFF as both cathode and anode exhibited a potential of 1.68 V at 100 mA cm^-2 for seawater electrolysis. Particularly, to achieve industrial requirements of 500 mA cm^-2, it only required a low cell voltage of 1.8 V and demonstrated a consistent response over 100 h, which outperformed the pair of Pt/C || IrO₂. This study provides a feasible idea for the preparation of electrocatalysts that are with both highly activity and corrosion resistance, which is crucial for the implementation of industrial-scale seawater electrolysis.
