Boosted Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production over Two-dimensional/Two-dimensional Ta3N5/ReS2 van der Waals Heterojunctions

Novel Gas Sensing Approach: ReS2/Ti3C2Tx Heterostructures for NH3 Detection in Humid Environments

Continuous monitoring of ammonia (NH3) in humid environments poses a notable challenge for gas sensing applications because of its effect on sensor sensitivity. The present work investigates the detection of NH3 in a natural humid environment utilizing ReS2/Ti3C2Tx heterostructures as a sensing platform. ReS2 nanosheets were vertically grown on the surface of Ti3C2Tx sheets through a hydrothermal synthetic approach, resulting in the formation of ReS2/Ti3C2Tx heterostructures. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of ReS2/Ti3C2Tx were investigated using various state-of-the-art techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, zeta potential, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller technique, and Raman spectroscopy. The heterostructures exhibited 1.3- and 8-fold increases in specific surface area compared with ReS2 and Ti3C2Tx, respectively, potentially enhancing the active gas adsorption sites. The electrical investigations of the ReS2/Ti3C2Tx-based sensor demonstrated enhanced selectivity and superior sensing response ranging from 7.8 to 12.4% toward 10 ppm of NH3 within a relative humidity range of 15-85% at room temperature. These findings highlight the synergistic effect of ReS2 and Ti3C2Tx, offering valuable insights for NH3 sensing in environments with high humidity, and are explained in the gas sensing mechanism.

Precise Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Dual Quantum Dots Artificial Photosystems Enabling Solar Water Oxidation

Quantum dots (QDs) colloidal nanocrystals are attracting enduring interest by scientific communities for solar energy conversion due to generic physicochemical merits including substantial light absorption coefficient, quantum confinement effect, enriched catalytically active sites, and tunable electronic structure. However, photo-induced charge carriers of QDs suffer from ultra-short charge lifespan and poor stability, rendering controllable vectorial charge modulation and customizing robust and stable QDs artificial photosystems challenging. Herein, tailor-made oppositely charged transition metal chalcogenides quantum dots (TMCs QDs) and MXene quantum dots (MQDs) are judiciously harnessed as the building blocks for electrostatic layer-by-layer assembly buildup on the metal oxides (MOs) framework. In these exquisitely designed LbL assembles MOs/(TMCs QDs/MQDs)n heterostructured photoanodes, TMCs QDs layer acts as light-harvesting antennas, and MQDs layer serves as electron-capturing mediator to relay cascade electrons from TMCs QDs to the MOs substrate, thereby yielding the spatially ordered tandem charge transport chain and contributing to the significantly boosted charge separation over TMCs QDs and solar water oxidation efficiency of MOs/(TMCs QDs/MQDs)n photoanodes. The relationship between interface configuration and charge transfer characteristics is unambiguously unlocked, by which photoelectrochemical mechanism is elucidated. This work would provide inspiring ideas for precisely mediating interfacial charge transfer pathways over QDs toward solar energy conversion.

Incorporating ReS2 Nanosheet into ZnIn2S4 Nanoflower as Synergistic Z-Scheme Photocatalyst for Highly Effective and Stable Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Degradation

Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the visible-light-driven Z-scheme system is very effective and promising for boosting photocatalytic hydrogen production and pollutant degradation. Here, a synergistic Z-scheme photocatalyst is constructed by coupling ReS2 nanosheet and ZnIn2S4 nanoflower and the experimental evidence for this direct Z-scheme heterostructure is provided by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance. Consequently, such a unique nanostructure makes this Z-scheme heterostructure exhibit 23.7 times higher photocatalytic hydrogen production than that of ZnIn2S4 nanoflower. Moreover, the ZnIn2S4/ReS2 photocatalyst is also very stable for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, almost without activity decay even storing for two weeks. Besides, this Z-scheme heterostructure also exhibits superior photocatalytic degradation rates of methylene blue (1.7 × 10-2 min-1) and mitoxantrone (4.2 × 10-3 min-1) than that of ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst. The ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra, transient photocurrent spectra, open-circuit potential measurement, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveal that the superior photocatalytic performance of ZnIn2S4/ReS2 heterostructure is mostly attributed to its broad and strong visible-light absorption, effective separation of charge carrier, and improved redox ability. This work provides a promising nanostructure design of a visible-light-driven Z-scheme heterostructure to simultaneously promote photocatalytic reduction and oxidation activity.

In situ Mo-doped ZnIn2S4/Ni-Ni Hofmann-type coordination polymer composites for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction

Solar energy-assisted hydrogen production technology is an essential tool for exploring hydrogen energy. To date, semiconductors have been used as the primary photocatalyst to generate hydrogen via photocatalytic water splitting. However, the high photogenerated electron-hole recombination rate of semiconductor photocatalysts results in a low hydrogen production rate. Herein, the synergistic effect of Mo-ion doping and the incorporation of Ni-based Hofmann-type coordination polymer (Ni-Ni HCP) on the photocatalytic performance of ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) is investigated. The hydrogen production rate of the prepared in-situ Mo doped ZnIn2S4 wrapped Ni-Ni HCP (Ni-Ni HCP/Mo-ZIS) sample under visible-light irradiation is 26.7 mmol g-1h-1, which is 10 times that of pure ZIS. Hydrogen production rate test, microscopic characterization, and density functional theory calculation confirm that the proposed dual modulation approach (combined ion doping and heterogeneous structure construction) could effectively increase the photocatalytic efficiency of ZIS. The stability of prepared samples is also examined by four-cycle photocatalytic hydrogen production tests. The proposed integrated method opens a new route for advancing renewable energy technology towards a sustainable future.

High-performance self-powered ultraviolet photodetector based on a ZnO/CuPc inorganic/organic heterojunction

A self-powered photodetector (PD) based on n-type ZnO/p-type small-molecule copper(ii) phthalocyanine (CuPc) inorganic/organic heterojunction film deposited on FTO substrate was constructed by simple solution spin-coating and thermal evaporation technology. The designed heterojunction device exhibits typical photoresponse behavior under zero bias, indicating that the device possesses a self-powered characteristic. This may benefit from the formation of a built-in electric field in the heterojunction, which can effectively separate electron-hole pairs. Specifically, the optimal performances of the device appear at a wavelength of 365 nm and light intensity of 0.03 mW cm-2, achieving on/off ratio of ∼245.88 (29.88), responsivity (Rp) of ∼227.11 mA W-1 (0.39 mA W-1), detectivity (D*) of ∼7.63 × 1011 Jones (∼7.53 × 109 Jones) and EQE of ∼77.23% (0.14%) at +2 V (0 V) bias voltage. In addition, the device has potential application in weak light detection. Therefore, the construction of inorganic/organic heterojunctions may provide a feasible strategy for the development of high-performance, self-powered and wavelength-selective PDs.

Constructing Sequential Type II Heterojunction CQDs/Bi2S3/TiNbO Photoanode with Superior Charge Transfer Capability Toward Stable Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Efficient charge transfer and light-trapping units are pivotal prerequisites in the realm of Ti-based photoanode photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this work, we successfully synthesized a ternary carbon quantum dots/Bi2S3 quantum dots/Nb-doped TiO2 nanotube arrays (CQDs/Bi2S3/TiNbO) composite photoanode for PEC water splitting. CQDs/Bi2S3/TiNbO composite photoanode exhibited a considerably elevated photocurrent density of 8.80 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs the reversible hydrogen electrode, which was 20.00 times better than that of TiO2 (0.44 mA cm-2). Furthermore, the CQDs/Bi2S3/TiNbO composite photoanode attested to exceptional stability, maintaining 92.54% of its initial current after 5 h of stability measurement. Nb-doping boosted the electrical conductivity, facilitating charge transfer at the solid-liquid interface. Moderate amounts of Bi2S3 quantum dots (QDs) and CQDs deposited on TiNbO provided abundant active sites for the electrolyte-photoanode interaction. Simultaneously, Bi2S3 QDs and CQDs synergistically functioned as light-trapping units to broaden the light absorption range from 396 to 530 nm, stimulating increased carrier generation within the composite photoanode. In comparison with pristine TiO, CQDs/Bi2S3/TiNbO photoanodes possessed a superior ability to promote interfacial reactions. This study may provide a strategy for developing high-performance Ti-based photoanodes with efficient charge transfer and light trapping units for highly driving solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Photocatalytic Applications of ReS2-Based Heterostructures

ReS2-based heterostructures, which involve the coupling of a narrow band-gap semiconductor ReS2 with other wide band-gap semiconductors, have shown promising performance in energy conversion and environmental pollution protection in recent years. This review focuses on the preparation methods, encompassing hydrothermal, chemical vapor deposition, and exfoliation techniques, as well as achievements in correlated applications of ReS2-based heterostructures, including type-I, type-II heterostructures, and Z-scheme heterostructures for hydrogen evolution, reduction of CO2, and degradation of pollutants. We believe that this review provides an overview of the most recent advances to guide further research and development of ReS2-based heterostructures for photocatalysis.

Interfacial engineering and chemical reconstruction of Mo/Mo2C@CoO@NC heterostructure for promoting oxygen evolution reaction

Chemical reorganization and interfacial engineering in hybrid nanomaterials are promising strategies for enhancing electrocatalytic performance. Herein, MoO₃@zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) heterogeneous nanoribbons are designed through coordination assembly. By following heat treatment, a Mo/Mo₂C@CoO@NC heterostructure with nitrogen-doped carbon-encapsulated CoO hexagons (CoO@NC) anchored on the Mo/Mo₂C jag matrix was fabricated. Notably, through controllable experimental optimization, the as-prepared Mo/Mo₂C@CoO@NC heterostructure exhibits numerous active centers (e.g. Mo, Mo₂C, CoO, and NC), fully exposed active sites (numerous pores and jagged structures), and abundant heterointerfaces (Mo/Mo₂C, Mo₂C/CoO@NC, Mo₂C/amorphous, and CoO@NC/amorphous), and exhibits good conductivity (localized single-crystal behavior, graphitized carbon). As a result, the as-developed Mo/Mo₂C@CoO@NC heterostructures inherit impressive oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance with an overpotential of only 215 mV at 10 mA cm^-2. Furthermore, Mo/Mo₂C@CoO@NC heterostructures exhibit excellent stability with a current density retention of 98.4% after 20 h chronoamperometry. This work provides deep insights into chemical reconstructions and tuning heterointerfaces to efficiently enhance the OER activity of heterostructure-based electrocatalysts.
