Microspheres of Si@Carbon-CNTs composites with a stable 3D interpenetrating structure applied in high-performance lithium-ion battery

Boron-doped three-dimensional porous carbon framework/carbon shell encapsulated silicon composites for high-performance lithium-ion battery anodes

Deleterious volumetric expansion and poor electrical conductivity seriously hinder the application of Si-based anode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, boron-doped three-dimensional (3D) porous carbon framework/carbon shell encapsulated silicon (B-3DCF/Si@C) hybrid composites are successfully prepared by two coating and thermal treatment processes. The presence of 3D porous carbon skeleton and carbon shell effectively improves the mechanical properties of the B-3DCF/Si@C electrode during the cycling process, ensures the stability of the electrical contacts of the silicon particles and stabilizes the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer, thus enhancing the electronic conductivity and ion migration efficiency of the anode. The developed B-3DCF/Si@C anode has a high reversible capacity, excellent cycling stability and outstanding rate performance. A reversible capacity of 1288.5 mAh/g is maintained after 600 cycles at a current density of 400 mA g-1. The improved electrochemical performance is demonstrated in a full cell using a LiFePO4-based cathode. This study presents a novel approach that not only mitigates the large volume expansion effects in LIB anode materials, but also provides a reference model for the preparation of porous composites with various functionalities.

Construction of sub micro-nano-structured silicon based anode for lithium-ion batteries

The significant volume change experienced by silicon (Si) anodes during lithiation/delithiation cycles often triggers mechanical-electrochemical failures, undermining their utility in high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, we propose a sub micro-nano-structured Si based material to address the persistent challenge of mechanic-electrochemical coupling issue during cycling. The mesoporous Si-based composite submicrospheres (M-Si/SiO2/CS) with a high Si/SiO2content of 84.6 wt.% is prepared by magnesiothermic reduction of mesoporous SiO2submicrospheres followed by carbon coating process. M-Si/SiO2/CS anode can maintain a high specific capacity of 740 mAh g-1at 0.5 A g-1after 100 cycles with a lower electrode thickness swelling rate of 63%, and exhibits a good long-term cycling stability of 570 mAh g-1at 1 A g-1after 250 cycles. This remarkable Li-storage performance can be attributed to the synergistic effects of the hierarchical structure and SiO2frameworks. The spherical structure mitigates stress/strain caused by the lithiation/delithiation, while the internal mesopores provide buffer space for Si expansion and obviously shorten the diffusion path for electrolyte/ions. Additionally, the amorphous SiO2matrix not only servers as support for structure stability, but also facilitates the rapid formation of a stable solid electrolyte interphase layer. This unique architecture offers a potential model for designing high-performance Si-based anode for LIBs.

Precursor Induced Assembly of Si Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Graphene/Carbon Matrices and the Influence of Al2O3 Coating on their Properties as Anode for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The theoretical capacity of pristine silicon as anodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can reach up to 4200 mAh g-1, however, the low electrical conductivity and the huge volume expansion limit their practical application. To address this challenge, a precursor strategy has been explored to induce the curling of graphene oxide (GO) flakes and the enclosing of Si nanoparticles by selecting protonated chitosan as both assembly inducer and carbon precursor. The Si nanoparticles are dispersed first in a slurry of GO by ball milling, then the resulting dispersion is dried by a spray drying process to achieve instantaneous solution evaporation and compact encapsulation of silicon particles with GO. An Al2O3 layer is constructed on the surface of Si@rGO@C-SD composites by the atomic layer deposition method to modify the solid electrolyte interface. This strategy enhances obviously the electrochemical performance of the Si as anode for LIBs, including excellent long-cycle stability of 930 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g-1, satisfied initial Coulomb efficiency of 76.7%, and high rate ability of 806 mAh g-1 at 5000 mA g-1. This work shows a potential solution to the shortcomings of Si-based anodes and provides meaningful insights for constructing high-energy anodes for LIBs.

Synthesis of Monodispersed Pd Nanoparticles and Ultrathin Twisty Pd Nanowire Networks for Electrooxidation of Ethanol

In recent years, preparing precious metal catalysts with a controllable morphology has become a hot research topic for researchers. In this study, monodispersed palladium (Pd) nanoparticles (NP) and ultrathin Pd twisty nanowire networks (TNN) were synthesized in a solvothermal system using N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and oleylamine (OAm) as solvents, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images reveal the successful synthesis of nanoparticles and ultrathin TNN microstructures. Electrochemical data show that the current densities of Pd-NP and Pd-TNN for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) reach 1878 mA mg-1 and 1765 mA mg-1, respectively. Compared to commercial Pd/C, Pd-TNN and Pd-NP exhibit better catalytic stability, lower electron transfer barriers, and more resistance to catalyst poisoning. Temperature, pH value, and ethanol concentration are all favorable for the EOR. According to the experimental data, the mechanism of enhanced electrocatalytic activity of Pd-NP and Pd-TNN catalysts for ethanol oxidation is discussed. This paper presents a method for preparing catalysts with stabilized structures to develop Pd-based catalysts for electrocatalytic oxidation reactions.

Innovative Solutions for High-Performance Silicon Anodes in Lithium-Ion Batteries: Overcoming Challenges and Real-World Applications

Silicon (Si) has emerged as a potent anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), but faces challenges like low electrical conductivity and significant volume changes during lithiation/delithiation, leading to material pulverization and capacity degradation. Recent research on nanostructured Si aims to mitigate volume expansion and enhance electrochemical performance, yet still grapples with issues like pulverization, unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) growth, and interparticle resistance. This review delves into innovative strategies for optimizing Si anodes' electrochemical performance via structural engineering, focusing on the synthesis of Si/C composites, engineering multidimensional nanostructures, and applying non-carbonaceous coatings. Forming a stable SEI is vital to prevent electrolyte decomposition and enhance Li+ transport, thereby stabilizing the Si anode interface and boosting cycling Coulombic efficiency. We also examine groundbreaking advancements such as self-healing polymers and advanced prelithiation methods to improve initial Coulombic efficiency and combat capacity loss. Our review uniquely provides a detailed examination of these strategies in real-world applications, moving beyond theoretical discussions. It offers a critical analysis of these approaches in terms of performance enhancement, scalability, and commercial feasibility. In conclusion, this review presents a comprehensive view and a forward-looking perspective on designing robust, high-performance Si-based anodes the next generation of LIBs.

Constructing a Stable Integrated Silicon Electrode with Efficient Lithium Storage Performance through Multidimensional Structural Design

Silicon (Si) stands out as a highly promising anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, its low intrinsic conductivity and the severe volume changes during the lithiation/delithiation process adversely affect cycling stability and hinder commercial viability. Rational design of electrode architecture to enhance charge transfer and optimize stress distribution of Si is a transformative way to enhance cycling stability, which still remains a great challenge. In this work, we fabricated a stable integrated Si electrode by combining two-dimensional graphene sheets (G), one-dimensional Si nanowires (SiNW), and carbon nanotubes (CNT) through the cyclization process of polyacrylonitrile (PAN). The integrated electrode features a G/SiNW framework enveloped by a conformal coating consisting of cyclized PAN (cPAN) and CNT. This configuration establishes interconnected electron and lithium-ion transport channels, coupled with a rigid-flexible encapsulated coating, ensuring both high conductivity and resistance against the substantial volume changes in the electrode. The unique multidimensional structural design enhances the rate performance, cyclability, and structural stability of the integrated electrode, yielding a gravimetric capacity (based on the total mass of the electrode) of 650 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at 3.0 A g-1. When paired with a commercial LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode, the resulting full cell retains 84.8% of its capacity after 160 cycles at 2.0 C and achieves an impressive energy density of 435 Wh kg-1 at 0.5 C, indicating significant potential for practical applications. This study offers valuable insights into comprehensive electrode structure design at the electrode level for Si-based materials.

Exploring the Potential of Carbonized Nano-Si within G@C@Si Anodes for Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Batteries

This study presents the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemical performance evaluation of carbon@silicon (C@Si) and graphite@carbon@silicon (G@C@Si) nanocomposites as potential anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Employing a combination of mechanical milling and carbonization using citric acid, we developed nanocomposites exhibiting unique core-shell structures, as confirmed by detailed SEM and TEM analysis. The G@C@Si nanocomposite displayed superior electrochemical performance, delivering an initial discharge capacity of 1724 mAh g-1 and a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 87.37%. The nanocomposite demonstrated remarkable cycling durability with a discharge capacity of 1248 mAh g-1 over 200 cycles and an average Coulombic efficiency of 99.1% and high-capacity retention of about 83%. Notably, a high capacity of 1325 mAh g-1 was observed at a high 3C rate, and the electrode showed excellent resilience by rapidly recovering to a discharge capacity of 1637 mAh g-1 when the C rate was reduced back to 0.5C. Electrochemical impedance spectra revealed a reduced charge transfer resistance of approximately 43 Ω in the G@C@Si nanocomposite as compared to that of C@Si (∼56 Ω) and nano-Si (105 Ω), indicating enhanced lithium-ion diffusion due to the integration of graphite. Postcycle electrode analysis revealed excellent structural integrity, with minimized volume changes in both C@Si and G@C@Si. XPS studies revealed a thinner SEI layer formation in the G@C@Si electrode compared to C@Si. The C@Si core-shell formation through the citric acid treatment of nano-Si and integration of graphite by mechanical milling significantly boosts the electrochemical performance of the G@C@Si nanocomposite. These findings suggest that the G@C@Si nanocomposite offers immense potential for utilization in high-capacity and high-efficiency LIBs.

Assembly of Alloyed PdM (Ag, Cu, and Sn) Nanosheets and Their Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Ethanol and Methanol

Direct alcohol fuel cells are popular due to their high energy density, abundant sources, and ease of transportation and storage. Palladium-based nanosheet self-assembled materials have emerged as an effective catalyst for alcohol oxidation reactions. In this work, nanosheets were synthesized with the same feeding ratio assembly of alloyed PdM (M = Ag, Cu, and Sn). The introduction of the second element was able to enhance the catalytic response of the catalysts to alcohol electrooxidation. Among them, the PdCu alloy exhibited the best performance in terms of catalytic activity, toxicity resistance, and stability to ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). The catalytic current densities for EOR can reach 2226, 2518, and 1598 mA mg-1 for PdAg, PdCu, and PdSn nanosheet assemblies, respectively. These are mainly attributed to better electronic effects, altered atomic distances within the cell for the d-band centers of Pd, and a larger electrochemical active surface area (ECSA). The optimized d-band center is beneficial to promote the catalytic performance of EOR and MOR. Experimental data also demonstrated that higher electrocatalytic temperature, higher pH, and higher alcohol concentration can accelerate the rate of alcohol electrooxidation. These results have the potential to be extended to Pd-M (M = other metals) nanosheets and help for a wider range of catalytic applications.
