High entropy alloy nanoparticles as efficient catalysts for alkaline overall seawater splitting and Zn-air batteries

MOF-derived low Ru-loaded high entropy alloy as an efficient and durable self-supporting electrode in rechargeable liquid/flexible Zn-air batteries

Exploiting the high-entropy alloy (HEA) electrocatalysts with the synergistic effect of multi-metal components is an effective approach to address the slow kinetics and undesirable stability of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Zn-air batteries (ZABs), but still faces many challenges. In this study, a multimetallic Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived HEA catalyst was successfully fabricated on carbon fiber as a flexible self-supporting electrode (denoted as CC@FeCoNiMoRu-HEA/C) for high-performance liquid/flexible ZABs using a facile and cost-effective strategy. The three-dimensional (3D) highly open network framework and hierarchical porous structure accelerate the mass transport of OH-/O2 and charge transfer. The electronic structure adjustment, lattice defects and high entropy effects enable the CC@FeCoNiMoRu-HEA/C catalysts to perform high OER catalytic activity and strong durability while reducing the Ru content and lowering the economic cost. In situ Raman spectra and XPS results reveal the generation of metal-OOH intermediates on the HEA surface during the OER process. In a practical demonstration, the liquid ZAB assembled with CC@FeCoNiMoRu-HEA/C + Pt/C as the air electrode offers stable open-circuit voltage, large power density, excellent specific capacity and satisfactory cycle life, outperforming the commercial RuO2 + Pt/C-based reference ZAB. More attractively, the flexible solid-state ZAB also achieves fast dynamic response, high peak power density, robust cycling stability as well as favorable mechanical flexibility, indicating a promising application prospect in future flexible electronics and wearable devices. This work provides a viable pathway to develop low precious metal-loaded HEAs as advanced OER self-supporting electrocatalysts and realize high-performance flexible energy storage devices.

Co-N-C/C Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Dual Applications in Seawater Electrolysis and Catalyst in Hydrazine Fuel Cells

The convergence of water electrolysis and alkaline fuel cells offers captivating solutions for sustainably harvesting energy. The research explores both hydrazine-assisted seawater electrolysis (hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) and hydrogen production reaction (HER)), as well as alkaline hydrazine fuel cell reactions (HzOR and Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)) by using a bifunctional cobalt polyaniline derived (Co PANI/C) catalyst. The catalyst shows excellent performance for hydrazine-assisted seawater electrolysis in harsh seawater environments to produce H2 as fuel with nearly 85% Faradaic efficiency and during alkaline HzOR, the bifunctional catalyst generates H2 with 95% Faradaic efficiency by acting as both anode and cathode side catalyst. Also, the same catalyst requires only a potential of 0.34 V versus RHE and 0.906 V versus RHE for HzOR and ORR, respectively, in 1 m KOH, which makes this overall process useful for a Hz/O2 fuel cell.

Biomimetic hierarchical porous high entropy alloy for significantly enhancing overall seawater splitting

Herein, a biomimetic hierarchical porous high entropy alloy (BHP-HEA) is prepared by a strategy combining selective laser melting and selective phase dissolution. It exhibited excellent seawater splitting performance, which only needs a low potential of 1.53 V to realize a current density of 100 mA cm-2, with exceptional stability.

Ruthenium-Based Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction: from Nanoparticles to Single Atoms

Benefiting from similar hydrogen bonding energy to Pt and much lower price compare with Pt, Ru based catalysts are promising candidates for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalytic activity of Ru nanoparticles can be enhanced through improving their dispersion by using different supports, and the strong metal supports interaction can further regulate their catalytic performance. In addition, single-atom catalysts (SACs) with almost 100% atomic utilization attract great attention and the coordinative atmosphere of single atoms can be adjusted by supports. Moreover, the syngenetic effects of nanoparticles and single atoms can further improve the catalytic performance of Ru based catalysts. In this review, the progress of Ru based HER electrocatalysts are summarized according to their existing forms, including nanoparticles (NPs), single atoms (SAs) and the combination of both NPs and SAs. The common supports such as carbon materials, metal oxides, metal phosphides and metal sulfides are classified to clarify the metal supports interaction and coordinative atmosphere of Ru active centers. Especially, the possible catalytic mechanisms and the reasons for the improved catalytic performance are discussed from both experimental results and theoretical calculations. Finally, some challenges and opportunities are prospected to facilitate the development of Ru based catalysts for HER.

Boosting urea-assisted water splitting over P-MoO2@CoNiP through Mo leaching/reabsorption coupling CoNiP reconstruction

Combining the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is an effective technology for energy-saving hydrogen production. Herein, a bifunctional electrocatalyst with CoNiP nanosheet coating on P-doped MoO2 nanorods (P-MoO2@CoNiP) is obtained via a two-step hydrothermal followed a phosphorization process. The catalyst demonstrates exceptional alkaline HER performance due to the formation of MoO2 and the dissolution/absorption of Mo. Meanwhile, the inclusion of Co and P in the P-MoO2@CoNiP catalyst facilitated the formation of NiOOH, enhancing UOR performance. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the hydrogen adsorption Gibbs free energy (ΔGH*) of P-MoO2@CoNiP is closer to 0 eV than CoNiP, favoring the HER. The catalyst only needs -0.08 and 1.38 V to reach 100 mA cm-2 for catalyzing the HER and UOR, respectively. The full urea electrolysis system driven by P-MoO2@CoNiP requires 1.51 V to achieve 100 mA cm-2, 120 mV lower than the traditional water electrolysis.

Deep Eutectic Solvent-Assisted Corrosion Boosting Bulk FeCoNiCrMo High-Entropy Alloys as Highly Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalyst

The key to enhancing water electrolysis efficiency lies in selecting highly efficient catalysts. Currently, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) are utilized in electrocatalysis applications owing to their diverse elemental composition, disordered elemental distribution, and the high solubility of each element, endowing them with excellent catalytic performance. The experiments were conducted using isoatomic FeNiCrMo HEA as a precursor, with a high-activity three-dimensional nanoporous structure rapidly synthesized via electrochemical one-step dealloying in a choline chloride-thiourea (ChCl-TU) deep eutectic solvent (DES). The results indicate that the dealloyed Fe20Co20Ni20Cr20Mo20 HEA mainly consists of two phases: face-centered cubic and σ phases. The imbalance in the distribution of elements in these two phases leads to quite different corrosion speeds with the FCC phase being preferentially corroded. Furthermore, synergistic electron coupling between surface atoms in the three-dimensional nanoporous structure strengthens the behavior of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). At a current density of 40 mA cm-2, the overpotential after dealloying decreased to 370 mV, demonstrating excellent stability. The technique demonstrated in this work provides a novel approach to improve the catalytic activity of OER.

Insights into the formation and growth of high entropy PdPtSnPbNi nanowires to obtain catalysts with high alcohol electrocatalytic oxidation activity

High-entropy alloys have raised great interest in recent years because of their potential applications for multi-electron reactions owing to their diverse active sites and multielement tunability. However, the difficulty of synthesis is an obstacle to their development due to phase separation often exists. In addition, it's a challenge to precisely control morphology in harsh conditions, thus leading to nanoparticles in many cases. We report a facile method to obtain PdPtPbSnNi HEA NWs by solvothermal synthesis method that no existing phase separation. PdPb nucleation plays a role in the formation of the high-entropy structure that serves as a PdPb nucleus for Sn, Ni, and Pt reduction subsequently, thus forming a single phase and an orderly-arranged nanowire structure. Significantly, the optimized PdPtPbSnNi NWs exhibit excellent catalytic activity and stability for both EOR and MOR which is 4.36 A mgPd+Pt-1 and 4.34 A mgPd+Pt-1, respectively. This study highlights a novel strategy for morphology tuning, providing a prospect for designing superior high-entropy nano-catalysts for multi-step reactions.

Unlocking the Potential of High Entropy Alloys in Electrochemical Water Splitting: A Review

The global pursuit of sustainable energy is focused on producing hydrogen through electrocatalysis driven by renewable energy. Recently, High entropy alloys (HEAs) have taken the spotlight in electrolysis due to their intriguing cocktail effect, broad design space, customizable electronic structure, and entropy stabilization effect. The tunability and complexity of HEAs allow a diverse range of active sites, optimizing adsorption strength and activity for electrochemical water splitting. This review comprehensively covers contemporary advancements in synthesis technique, design framework, and physio-chemical evaluation approaches for HEA-based electrocatalysts. Additionally, it explores design principles and strategies aimed at optimizing the catalytic activity, stability, and effectiveness of HEAs in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water splitting. Through an in-depth investigation of these aspects, the complexity inherent in constituent element interactions, reaction processes, and active sites associated with HEAs is aimed to unravel. Eventually, an outlook regarding challenges and impending difficulties and an outline of the future direction of HEA in electrocatalysis is provided. The thorough knowledge offered in this review will assist in formulating and designing catalysts based on HEAs for the next generation of electrochemistry-related applications.

Engineering Non-precious Trifunctional Cobalt-Based Electrocatalysts for Industrial Water Splitting and Ultra-High-Temperature Flexible Zinc-Air Battery

Developing efficient, robust, and cost-effective trifunctional catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at high current density and high temperature is crucial for water splitting at industry-level conditions and ultra-high-temperature Zinc-air battery (ZAB). Herein, cobalt nanoparticles well-integrated with nitrogen-doped porous carbon leaves (Co@NPCL) by direct annealing of core-shell bimetallic zeolite imidazolate frameworks is synthesized. Benefiting from the homogeneous distribution of metallic Co nanoparticles, the conductive porous carbon, and the doped N species, the as-fabricated Co@NPCL catalysts exhibit outstanding trifunctional performances with low overpotentials at 10 mA cm-2 for HER (87 mV) and OER (276 mV), long-lasting lifetime of over 2000 h, and a high half-wave potential of 0.86 V versus RHE for ORR. Meanwhile, the Co@NPCL catalyst can serve as both cathode and anode for water splitting at industrial conduction, and exhibit a stable cell voltage of 1.87 V to deliver a constant catalytic current of 500 mA cm-2 over 60 h. Moreover, the excellent trifunctional activity of Co@NPCL enables the flexible ZAB to operate efficiently at ultra-high temperature of 70 °C, delivering 162 mW cm-2 peaks power density and an impressive stability for 4500 min at 2 mA cm-2.

Bamboo-like nitrogen-doped carbon supported chlorine-doped Fe2P as an antibacterial oxygen reduction catalyst

Bio-inspiration and biomimetics offer guidance for designing and synthesizing advanced catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in microbial fuel cells (MFCs). Herein, a chlorine-doped Fe2P supported by nitrogen-doped carbon (Cl-Fe2P/NC) catalyst was designed and prepared based on imitating the bamboo structure. The electronegative chlorine captured the electron transfer from Fe2P and transferred it to NC through carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The antibacterial chlorine inhibited the cathode biofilm formation to enhance the ion transport. Cl-Fe2P/NC achieved a half-wave potential of 0.91 V and an onset potential of 0.99 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. After 500 h of reaction, the MFCs assembled by the Cl-Fe2P/NC cathode achieved a maximum power density of 1505 mW m-2. This work provides insights into the design of advanced materials through bio-inspiration and biomimicry.

High-entropy-based nano-materials for sustainable environmental applications

High entropy materials (HEMs), epitomized by high entropy alloys (HEAs), have sparked immense interest for a range of clean energy and environmental applications due to their remarkable structural versatility and adjustable characteristics. In the face of environmental challenges, HEMs have emerged as valuable tools for addressing issues ranging from wastewater remediation to energy conversion and storage. This review provides a comprehensive exploration of HEMs, spotlighting their catalytic capabilities in diverse redox reactions, such as carbon dioxide reduction to value-added products, degradation of organic pollutants, oxygen reduction, hydrogen evolution, and ammonia decomposition using electrocatalytic and photocatalytic pathways. Additionally, the review highlights HEMs as novel electrode nanomaterials, with the potential to enhance the performance of batteries and supercapacitors. Their unique features, including high capacitance, electrical conductivity, and thermal stability, make them valuable components for meeting crucial energy demands. Furthermore, the review examines challenges and opportunities in advancing HEMs, emphasizing the importance of understanding the underlying mechanisms governing their catalytic and electrochemical behaviors. Essential considerations for optimizing the HEM performance in catalysis and energy storage are outlined to guide future research. Moreover, to provide a comprehensive understanding of the current research landscape, a meticulous bibliometric analysis is presented, offering insights into the trends, focal points, and emerging directions within the realm of HEMs, particularly in addressing environmental concerns.

Interfacial oxygen atom modification of a PdSn alloy to boost oxygen reduction in zinc-air batteries

Modifying the surface of a catalyst with heteroatoms can regulate the interfacial atomic valence state and adjust the charge distribution, which is promising for obtaining desirable platinum carbon catalyst (Pt/C)-matched oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic performance. Here, we developed an efficient method to access O-rich crystalline interfacial-exposed palladium-tin alloy (111) crystal surfaces [Pd3Sn (111)] for highly efficient ORR via direct reduction of Pd/Sn metal salt species that are well dispersed in a nitrogen, phosphorus-doped carbonaceous (NPC) substrate. In addition to the other materials, preembedded Pd/Sn metal salt species in NPC control the release of metal sources upon reduction in the liquid phase, resulting in the grafting of an as-prepared PdSn alloy with many merits, such as efficient electron conduction, short-range crystallinity and increased crystal interface exposure. The presence of a considerable quantity of oxygen atoms at the interface of small-sized PdSn alloys on NPC substrates has been methodically verified by powder X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy characterizations. The PdSn-O sample exhibited excellent ORR activity, achieving an onset potential of ∼0.99 V and a half-wave potential of ∼0.88 V at 1600 rpm in O2-saturated 1.0 M KOH. Density functional theory simulations of pure Pd, Pd-O, the PdSn alloy and PdSn-O suggest that interfacial oxygen atom modification is responsible for the significantly improved ORR activity. The assembled zinc-air battery provides a high specific power of 218.9 mW cm-2 and a specific capacity of 810.6 mAh gZn-1. Our approach has the potential to stimulate the preparation of O-rich crystalline interfacial-exposed alloy compounds for other energy conversion applications.

Efficient and Stable pH-Universal Water Electrolysis Catalyzed by N-Doped Hollow Carbon Confined RuIrOx Nanocrystals

A facile strategy is developed to fabricate 3 nm RuIrOx nanocrystals anchored onto N-doped hollow carbon for highly efficient and pH-universal overall water splitting and alkaline seawater electrolysis. The designed catalyst exhibits much lower overpotential and superior stability than most previously reported Ru- and Ir-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions. It also manifests excellent overall water splitting activities and maintains ≈100% Faradic efficiency with a cell voltage of 1.53, 1.51, and 1.54 V at 10 mA cm-2 for 140, 255, and 200 h in acid, alkaline, and alkaline seawater electrolytes, respectively. The excellent electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to solid bonding between RuIrOx and the hollow carbon skeleton, and effective electronic coupling between Ru and Ir, thus inducing its remarkable electrocatalytic activities and long-lasting stability.

Catalyzing Sustainable Water Splitting with Single Atom Catalysts: Recent Advances

Electrochemical water splitting for sustainable hydrogen and oxygen production have shown enormous potentials. However, this method needs low-cost and highly active catalysts. Traditional nano catalysts, while effective, have limits since their active sites are mostly restricted to the surface and edges, leaving interior surfaces unexposed in redox reactions. Single atom catalysts (SACs), which take advantage of high atom utilization and quantum size effects, have recently become appealing electrocatalysts. Strong interaction between active sites and support in SACs have considerably improved the catalytic efficiency and long-term stability, outperforming their nano-counterparts. This review's first section examines the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) and the Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER). In the next section, SACs are categorized as noble metal, non-noble metal, and bimetallic synergistic SACs. In addition, this review emphasizes developing methodologies for effective SAC design, such as mass loading optimization, electrical structure modulation, and the critical role of support materials. Finally, Carbon-based materials and metal oxides are being explored as possible supports for SACs. Importantly, for the first time, this review opens a discussion on waste-derived supports for single atom catalysts used in electrochemical reactions, providing a cost-effective dimension to this vibrant research field. The well-known design techniques discussed here may help in development of electrocatalysts for effective water splitting.

Well-defined Ni3N nanoparticles armored in hollow carbon nanotube shell for high-efficiency bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalysis

Alkaline H2-O2 fuel cells and water electrolysis are crucial for hydrogen energy recycling. However, the sluggish kinetics of the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline medium pose significant obstacles. Thus, it is imperative but challenging to develop highly efficient and stable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for alkaline HOR and HER. Here, we present the intriguing synthesis of well-defined Ni3N nanoparticles armored within an N-doped hollow carbon nanotube shell (Ni3N@NC) via the conversion of a hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) to metal-organic framework (MOF), followed by high-temperature pyrolysis. As-developed Ni3N@NC demonstrates exceptional bifunctionality in alkaline HOR/HER electrocatalysis, with a high HOR limiting current density of 2.67 mA cm-2 comparable to the benchmark 20 wt% Pt/C, while achieving a lead in overpotential of 145 mV and stronger CO-tolerance. Additionally, it achieves a low overpotential of 21 mV to attain a HER current density of 10 mA cm-2 with long-term stability up to 340 h, both exceeding those of Pt/C. Structural analyses and electrochemical studies reveal that the remarkable bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalytic performance of Ni3N@NC can be ascribed to the synergistic coupling among the well-dispersed small-sized Ni3N nanoparticles, chain-mail structure, and optimized electronic structure enabled by strong metal-support interaction. Furthermore, theoretical calculations indicate that the high-efficiency HOR/HER observed in Ni3N@NC is attributed to the strong OH- affinity, moderate H adsorption, and enhanced water formation/dissociation ability of the Ni3N active sites. This work underscores the significance of rational structural design in enhancing performance and inspires further development of advanced nanostructures for efficient hydrogen electrocatalysis.

Fe nanoparticles confined by multiple-heteroatom-doped carbon frameworks for aqueous Zn-air battery driving CO2 electrolysis

Metal-organic frameworks (MOF) derived carbon materials are considered to be excellent conductive mass transfer substrates, and the large specific surface area provides a favorable platform for loading metal nanoparticles. Tuning the coordination of metals through polyacid doping to change the MOF structure and specific surface area is an advanced strategy for designing catalysts. Modification of Fe-doped ZIF-8 pre-curing by pyrolysis of phosphomolybdic acid hydrate (PMo), Fe nanoparticles confined by Mo and N co-doped carbon frameworks (Fe-NP/MNCF) were fabricated, and the impact of PMo doping on the shape and functionality of the catalysts was investigated. The Zn-air battery (ZAB) driven CO2 electrolysis was realized by using Fe-NP/MNCF, which was used as bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) catalysts. The results show that the half-wave potential (E1/2) of Fe-NP/MNCF is 0.89 V, and the limiting diffused current density (jL) is 6.4 mA cm-2. The ZAB constructed by Fe-NP/MNCF shows a high specific capacity of 794.8 mAh gZn-1, a high open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.475 V, and a high power density of 111.6 mW cm-2. Fe-NP/MNCF exhibited efficient CO2RR performance with high CO Faraday efficiency (FECO) of 87.5 % and current density for the generation of carbon dioxide (jCO) of 10 mA cm-2 at -0.9 V vs RHE. ZAB-driven CO2RR had strong catalytic stability. These findings provide new methods and techniques for the preparation of advanced carbon-based catalysts from MOFs.

Atomically dispersed Pd on defective BN nanosheets for nitrite electroreduction to ammonia

Electrocatalytic NO2- reduction to NH3 (NO2RR) offers a prospective strategy to concurrently achieve polluted NO2- removal and effective NH3 electrosynthesis. In this work, we report atomically dispersed Pd on defective BN nanosheets (Pd1/BN) as an efficient catalyst for the NO2RR, achieving the highest NH3-Faradaic efficiency of 91.7% with an NH3 yield rate of 347.1 μmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.6 V vs. RHE, superior to those of most previously reported electrocatalysts. Theoretical computations reveal the isolated Pd sites as catalytic centers to selectively adsorb NO2- and accelerate NO2--to-NH3 hydrogenation process with a minimized reaction barrier, eventually contributing to the considerably enhanced NO2RR selectivity and activity of Pd1/BN.

Scalable Synthesis of Ir Cluster Anchored on Porous Hollow Carbon Nanobowls for Enhancing pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

Design high-loading with superior activity and high atomic efficiency has consistently been a new frontier of heterogeneous catalysis while challenging in synthetic technology. In this work, a universal solid-state strategy is proposed for large scalable production of high-loading Ir clusters on porous hollow carbon nanobowls (Ir CSs/PHCNBs). The strong electronic interaction between metallic Ir cluster and C on PHCNBs leads to electron redistribution, which significantly improves the electron transfer rate on the interface. The obtained Ir CSs/PHCNBs only require overpotentials of 35, 34, and 37 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with stable outputting of 10 mA cm-2 under acidic, alkaline, and neutral conditions, respectively, which exceeds the state-of-the-art HER electrocatalysts. Meanwhile, the Tafel slopes of Ir CSs/PHCNBs for the HER process are 23.07, 48.76, and 28.95 mV dec-1 , greatly lower than that of PHCNBs (152.73, 227.96, and 140.29 mV dec-1 ) and commercial Pt/C (20%) (36.33, 66.10, and 36.61 mV dec-1 ). These results provide a new strategy for the universal synthesis of clusters catalysts and insight into understanding the interface effects between clusters and carbon substrate, facilitating the industrial application of hydrogen production.

Electrocatalytic nitrate-to-ammonia conversion on CoO/CuO nanoarrays using Zn-nitrate batteries

Zn-NO3- batteries can generate electricity while producing NH3 in an environmentally friendly manner, making them a very promising device. However, the conversion of NO3- to NH3 involves a proton-assisted 8-electron (8e-) transfer process with a high kinetic barrier, requiring high-performance catalysts to realize the potential applications of this technology. Herein, we propose a heterostructured CoO/CuO nanoarray electrocatalyst prepared on a copper foam (CoO/CuO-NA/CF) that can electrocatalytically and efficiently convert NO3- to NH3 at low potential and achieves a maximum NH3 yield of 296.9 μmol h-1 cm-2 and the Faraday efficiency (FE) of 92.9% at the -0.2 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). Impressively, Zn-NO3- battery based on the monolithic CoO/CuO-NA/CF electrode delivers a high NH3 yield of 60.3 μmol h-1 cm-2, FENH3 of 82.0%, and a power density of 4.3 mW cm-2. This study provides a paradigm for heterostructured catalyst preparation for the energy-efficient production of NH3 and simultaneously generating electrical energy.

Metal Phosphorous Chalcogenide: A Promising Material for Advanced Energy Storage Systems

The development of efficient and affordable electrode materials is crucial for clean energy storage systems, which are considered a promising strategy for addressing energy crises and environmental issues. Metal phosphorous chalcogenides (MPX3 ) are a fascinating class of two-dimensional materials with a tunable layered structure and high ion conductivity, making them particularly attractive for energy storage applications. This review article aims to comprehensively summarize the latest research progress on MPX3 materials, with a focus on their preparation methods and modulation strategies. Additionally, the diverse applications of these novel materials in alkali metal ion batteries, metal-air batteries, and all-solid-state batteries are highlighted. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of MPX3 materials are presented to inspire their better potential in energy storage applications. Nb-doped NiO nanoflowers for nitrite electroreduction to ammonia

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrite to ammonia (NO2RR) is considered as an appealing route to simultaneously achieve sustainable ammonia production and abate hazardous nitrite pollution. Herein, atomically Nb-doped NiO nanoflowers are designed as a high-performance NO2RR catalyst, which exhibits the highest NH3-Faradaic efficiency of 92.4% with an NH3 yield rate of 200.5 μmol h-1 cm-2 at -0.6 V RHE. Theoretical calculations unravel that Nb dopants can act as Lewis acid sites to render effective NO2- activation, decreased protonation energy barriers, and restricted hydrogen evolution, ultimately leading to a high NO2RR selectivity and activity.

Co doping promotes the alkaline overall seawater electrolysis performance over MnPSe3 nanosheets

Herein, two-dimensional cobalt-doped MnPSe3 nanosheets (CMPS) were constructed, which served as an outstanding bifunctional catalyst for alkaline seawater splitting, i.e., offering the current density of 10 mA cm-2 with applied overpotentials of 59 and 300 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. The assembled two-electrode system of CMPS//CMPS also demonstrated excellent catalytic activity (10 mA cm-2, 1.59 V) and can remain stable for more than 100 h. Moreover, the theoretical calculations showed that CMPS features a suitable H* adsorption beneficial for the HER, as well as a lower free energy barrier favorable for the OER.

Synthesis of Fe Atom-Doped Monodisperse Co2P Nanorods with a Dual-Ligand Strategy for Excellent Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Performance

Cobalt phosphide has been widely used in various catalytic reactions due to its excellent catalytic activity and stability. In contrast to the conventional synthesis of Co2P nanorods using expensive and toxic trioctylphosphine (TOP), this study employs a dual-ligand strategy to prepare iron-atom-doped monodisperse Co2P nanorods. The strategy involves the use of triphenylphosphite (TPOP) as a cost-effective and relatively less toxic strong ligand, alongside hexadecylamine (HDA) as a weaker ligand. The resultant atom-doped Co2P nanorods exhibited a large aspect ratio, providing a plentiful supply of active sites for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. In both alkaline and acidic electrolytes, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm-2 required overpotentials of 91 and 141 mV, respectively, with the optimal Co:Fe molar ratio of 1:0.2. The introduction of Fe atoms through doping increased the electron density at the Co atom sites, thereby enhancing H adsorption. This research offers a cost-effective and relatively low-toxicity method for the controlled fabrication of monodisperse transition-metal phosphide nanorods, enabling efficient catalytic reactions.

Electrochemical activated molybdenum oxides based multiphase heterostructures with high hydrogen evolution activity in alkaline condition

Electrochemical activation is an effective method for synthesizing economically feasible heterogeneous hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we first synthesized MoO2-Co2Mo3O8precatalyst, which was electrochemically activated to produce K2Mo3O10within the original phase to form the heterogeneous structure. The electrochemically activated samples demonstrate exceptional HER activity in alkaline medium, which exhibit a low overpotential of 31 mV at current density of 10 mA cm-2(135 mV at 100 mA cm-2), as well as a small Tafel slope of 34 mV dec-1. This is due to the creation of multiphase heterostructures that prompt interfacial interactions and accelerate charge transfer. Simultaneously, the creation of additional active sites increases their intrinsic activities. The combined effects collectively enhance the HER performance. The application of this method in the preparation of HER catalysts is still relatively unexplored, thus rendering our work a pioneering contribution to the field.
