Abstract
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare condition characterized by progressive heterotopic ossifications and congenital hallux valgus deformities. The common underlying genetic cause is an ACVR1 mutation, resulting in altered bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) regulation. Trauma and/or minor procedures aggravate the abnormal bony formation in soft tissues. This report presents a 3-year-old child with this condition who presented pseudo-ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) after minor craniofacial trauma. Abnormal ossification in the medial pterygoid muscle was identified as the causative abnormality for the presentation with trismus.

Abstract
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is defined as 'bone where it does not belong'. Given the historical variety of nomenclature and eponyms, there is significant confusion about the etiology, pathogenesis, classification, and treatment of HO related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The existing classifications for TMJ HO have shortcomings: they relate to specific populations, use differing imaging studies and demographic data, do not universally include alloplastic/autologous replacements, are based variously on radiological and/or clinical presentations that cannot always be combined, and were largely developed to assist oral and maxillofacial surgeons in surgical management. These deficiencies make it problematic to compare studies, draw valid conclusions, and pursue research. The aim of this study was to develop a new, more inclusive classification for TMJ HO. Currently available classifications were evaluated and a Delphi-type system used to build consensus from clinicians and researchers to develop a new system. Fourteen unique classifications for TMJ ankylosis/HO were identified. In light of the biological specifics related to heterotopic calcification of extracellular matrix versus heterotopic formation of actual bone, the group recommends a more unambiguous term - peri-articular bone formation - and proposes a new classification. This will help clinicians and researchers to study, describe, and manage various types of ectopic bone associated with the TMJ.

Abstract
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is the formation of ectopic bone that is primarily genetically driven (fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva [FOP]) or acquired in the setting of trauma (tHO). HO has undergone intense investigation, especially over the last 50 years, as awareness has increased around improving clinical technologies and incidence, such as with ongoing wartime conflicts. Current treatments for tHO and FOP remain prophylactic and include NSAIDs and glucocorticoids, respectively, whereas other proposed therapeutic modalities exhibit prohibitive risk profiles. Contemporary studies have elucidated mechanisms behind tHO and FOP and have described new distinct niches independent of inflammation that regulate ectopic bone formation. These investigations have propagated a paradigm shift in the approach to treatment and management of a historically difficult surgical problem, with ongoing clinical trials and promising new targets.

Abstract
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by heterotopic ossification (HO) of the skeletal muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments. Patients often experience limitations in jaw function due to HO formation in the maxillofacial region. However, no studies have yet analyzed the age of onset and location of HO and the type of restrictions it may yield in the maxillofacial region. The aim of this study was to evaluate all existing literature on the site of onset of HO and associated functional restrictions of the jaw. To this end, a scoping review was performed focusing on limitations of jaw movement in FOP patients. The literature search resulted in 725 articles, of which 30 articles were included for full study after applying the exclusion criteria. From these articles 94 FOP patients were evaluated for gender, age, presence and age at which HO started in the maxillofacial region, location of HO, whether HO was caused spontaneous or traumatic and maximum mouth opening. Formation of HO is slightly more common in female patients compared to male patients, but the age of HO onset or the maximum mouth opening does not differ between genders. Trauma-induced HO occurred at a significantly younger age than spontaneous HO. Interestingly, a difference in maximum mouth opening was observed between the different ossified locations in the maxillofacial region, with ossification of the masseter muscle resulting in the smallest and ossification of the zygomatic arch resulting in the largest maximum mouth opening. This review revealed that the location of the maxillofacial region affected by HO determines the degree of limitations of the maximum mouth opening. This finding may be important for establishing clinical guidelines for the dental management of FOP patients.

Abstract
Temporomandibular joint ankyloses (TMJA) may manifest in patients with several predisposing systemic conditions. A case of extraarticular TMJA is presented in a patient diagnosed with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressive (FOP) is presented. The features, diagnosis, and management of TMJA superimposed on this condition are presented through a qualitative systematic review of literature.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In this study, the role of inflammation in traumatic heterotopic ossification around temporomandibular joint (THO-TMJ), as well as the preventive and treatment effect of celecoxib in THO-TMJ both in vivo and in vitro were explored. DESIGN A surgically-induced THO-TMJ mouse model and a co-culture model of ATDC-5 or MC3T3-E1 and RAW-264.7 cells were used in this study for in vivo and in vitro research. RESULTS A series of inflammatory factors, such as CD3, CD68, CD20, IL-10, IL-6 and TNF-α, were activated 48 h after trauma in a THO-TMJ model. Local trauma initiated systemic inflammatory responses as well as T cell- and macrophage-mediated local inflammatory responses around TMJ. In addition, expression of COX-2 was significantly elevated. The findings also showed that local injection of celecoxib could effectively alleviate the inflammatory response around TMJ at the early stage of trauma and inhibit the formation of THO-TMJ in vivo. Meanwhile, celecoxib could inhibit chondrogenic differentiation of ATDC-5 and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 under inflammatory condition in vitro. Furthermore, celecoxib could inhibit the expression of Bmpr1b in the injured condylar cartilage at the initiation stage of THO-TMJ, which implied that Bmpr1b expressed by the residual condylar cartilage might be related to the pathogenesis of THO-TMJ. CONCLUSIONS Inflammation played a crucial role in the pathogenesis of THO-TMJ, and anti-inflammation might be a possible choice to inhibit THO-TMJ, which provided scientific clues for the mechanisms, pharmacotherapy and molecular intervention of THO-TMJ.

Abstract
Zygomatic-coronoid ankylosis is a rare complication in maxillofacial trauma. Currently, less of 30 cases reported in the literature. The aim of this study was to report a case of zygomatic-coronoid ankylosis after trauma. A 26-year-old male, with zygomatic-coronoid ankylosis after 7 years of facial trauma, was treated by intraoral bilateral coronoidectomy. However, the literature continues to discuss the best approach, intraorally or extraorally. This study observed that the intraoral approach was easily performed and without complications.

Abstract
Case summary An 8-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was referred for trismus of progressive onset, which had started at least 1 month previously. The patient presented with weakness, anorexia, chronic bilateral purulent nasal discharge and concurrent reduced nasal airflow. Upon physical examination, painful mouth opening, bilateral swelling of the temporal areas, with an inability to open and close the mouth completely, were apparent. A vertical mandibular range of motion (vmROM) of 22 mm was noted. Complete blood count, biochemistry, electrolytes and various serology tests were unremarkable. CT revealed multiple mineralised lesions within the masticatory muscles. Histopathological features were consistent with those seen in the human disease fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP). Supportive treatment did not improve the vmROM, eventually resulting in a 13 mm open bite, and total inability to close and open the mouth. Cardiac arrest occurred at the induction of an anaesthesia procedure aiming to perform tracheostomy and nasal lavage. Despite emergency tracheotomy and cardiac resuscitation, humane euthanasia was elected by the owners. Post-mortem molecular investigations highlighted a heterozygous deletion, compatible with a splicing site mutation in ACVR1, which is also associated with FOP in humans. Relevance and novel information This is the first report in the veterinary literature of FOP-like disease selectively affecting the masticatory muscles. This condition is associated with a poor prognosis, as no medical or surgical treatment has currently proven to be of any prophylactic or curative benefit. Although rare, FOP-like disease should be included in the differential diagnosis of trismus in the cat. Any further muscle injury should be avoided.

Abstract
Although the risk factors and diagnosis of heterotopic ossification (HO) are discussed in the orthopedics literature, the etiology of HO, as well as its prevention and management, remain theoretical. Furthermore, there is a lack of information in the literature regarding HO in temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR). This article provides a qualitative review of information relative to the etiology, diagnosis, and management of HO to inform and encourage further investigation in TMJR. The orthopedic HO literature considered for this qualitative review was drawn from a comprehensive examination of the subject published previously by one of the authors. Using the key words "heterotopic ossification" or "heterotopic bone", citations in the PubMed database from both the dental and oral and maxillofacial surgery literature were reviewed. Based on this, it appears that the etiology, diagnosis, imaging, laboratory testing, risk factors, prophylaxis, and non-surgical and surgical options available for the management of TMJR-related HO are similar to those for orthopedic HO, but further elucidation is required for TMJR. There is a lack of published information in the literature on TMJR. Therefore, using the literature from this review as a foundation, studies should be developed and reported so that alloplastic TMJ surgeons have evidence-based protocols that will lead to the early detection and potential prevention of HO.

Abstract
Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an autosomal dominant genetic transmitted disease, with a rare incidence (1-2 cases/million persons) and it usually affects female patients. Its manifestations include acute pain episodes that tend to repeat, involving the soft tissue and the axial muscles with later appearance of ectopic bone tissue in ligaments, joints and tendons. In the great majority of times, the skeletal modifications are observed at birth but the first clinical symptoms occur at 2-4 years old. The clinical symptoms include pain and inflammation of the soft tissue, sometimes associated with fever and cutaneous erythema, joint symptoms--pain, stiffness most frequently concerning the scapular and pelvic girdle, bone malformations--short hallux, microdactilia, kyphoscoliosis, thorax malformations. The diagnosis is established based on the clinical symptoms and the imagistic investigations: CT, MRI - which indicate the joint modification and the ectopic bone tissue. Muscular biopsy is not indicated as it leads to new lesions in the already traumatized areas.
