Modeling fate and transport of hydraulic fracturing fluid in the presence of abandoned wells

Geologic sources and well integrity impact methane emissions from orphaned and abandoned oil and gas wells

The 160-year history of oil and gas drilling in the United States has left a legacy of unplugged orphaned and abandoned wells, some of which are leaking methane and other hazardous chemicals into the environment. The locations of around 120,000 documented orphaned wells are currently known with the number of undocumented orphaned wells possibly ranging towards a million. The bulk of methane emissions originate from only 10 % of orphaned and abandoned wells, while the remaining wells have undetectable emissions. Understanding the sources of methane emissions from orphaned wells is key to estimating emission rates and prioritizing plugging. In this article, we identify key studies reporting methane emission measurements from orphaned and abandoned wells in the published literature and analyze previously published isotopic methane data to categorize the sources of methane emissions. Three primary geologic sources provide methane to a leaking well that can migrate from geologic formations into or along the wellbore to contaminate groundwater, the surface environment, and the atmosphere. These geologic sources of methane are petroleum (oil and gas) sourced reservoirs, coal seams, and methanogenesis occurring in and around the wellbore. Thermogenic petroleum gas reservoirs are associated with the highest emission rates measured to date. The next highest rates are from coalbed methane sources, while biogenic sources are the lowest based on the publicly available measured emissions data. Well conditions that could potentially enable methane transport include decay of the wellhead and surface infrastructure, wellbore deterioration from corrosive fluids in the subsurface, delamination of the casing and cement, damage from seismicity, and new fracture networks created by hydraulic fracturing of newly drilled neighboring wells. With an understanding of these geologic sources and well conditions, we can (1) better identify areas where high-emitting wells are likely to be present, (2) improve emission rate estimates from orphaned and abandoned wells, and (3) better prioritize wells for plugging. SYNOPSIS: Understanding the geologic sources of methane emissions from orphaned and abandoned wells and wellbore conditions that lead to methane release can significantly improve emissions estimates and aid in prioritizing which wells to plug.

Geochemical Evidence of Potential Groundwater Contamination with Human Health Risks Where Hydraulic Fracturing Overlaps with Extensive Legacy Hydrocarbon Extraction

Unconventional oil and gas development (UOGD) sometimes impacts water resources, including incidents of methane (CH₄) migration from compromised wells and spills that degrade water with salts, organics, and metals. We hypothesized that contamination may be more common where UOGD overlaps with legacy coal, oil, and gas extraction. We tested this hypothesis on ∼7000 groundwater analyses from the largest U.S. shale gas play (Marcellus), using data mining techniques to explore UOGD contamination frequency. Corroborating the hypothesis, we discovered small, statistically significant regional correlations between groundwater chloride concentrations ([Cl]) and UOGD proximity and density where legacy extraction was extremely dense (southwestern Pennsylvania (SWPA)) but no such correlations where it was minimal (northeastern Pennsylvania). On the other hand, legacy extraction of shallow gas in SWPA may have lessened today's gas leakage, as no regional correlation was detected for [CH₄] in SWPA. We identify hotspots where [Cl] and [CH₄] increase by 3.6 and 3.0 mg/L, respectively, per UOG well drilled in SWPA. If the [Cl] correlations document contamination via brines leaked from wellbores, impoundments, or spills, we calculate that thallium concentrations could exceed EPA limits in the most densely developed hotspots, thus posing a potential human health risk.

Applicability Assessment of Viscoelastic Surfactants and Synthetic Polymers as a Base of Hydraulic Fracturing Fluids

Hydraulic fracturing (HF) is currently the most widespread and effective method of oil production stimulation. The most commonly used fracturing fluid is crosslinked guar gels. However, when using these systems, problems such as clogging of the pore space, cracking, and proppant packing with the remains of the undestroyed polymer arise. Therefore, the efficiency of the hydraulic fracturing process decreases. In this work, compositions based on viscoelastic surfactants (VES) and synthetic polymers (SP) were considered as alternatives capable of minimizing these disadvantages. Most often, the possibility of using a composition as a fracturing fluid is evaluated using rotational viscometry. However, rotational viscometry is not capable of fully assessing the structural and mechanical properties of fracturing fluid. This leads to a reduced spread of systems based on VES and SP. This paper proposes an integrated approach to assessing the effectiveness of a water-based fracturing fluid. The proposed comprehensive approach includes an assessment of the main characteristics of water-based fracturing fluids, including an analysis of their structural and mechanical properties, which is based on a combination of rotational and oscillatory rheology and a comparative analysis of methods for studying the influence of fluids on the reservoir rock. The use of the developed approach to assess the technological properties of fracturing fluids makes it possible to demonstrate the potential applicability of new, unconventional fracturing fluids such as systems based on VES and SP.

Commingled Fluids in Abandoned Boreholes: Proximity Analysis of a Hidden Liability

The interactions between old abandoned wellbores of suspect well integrity with hydraulic fracturing (HF), enhanced oil recovery (EOR), or salt water disposal (SWD) operations can result in upward leakage of deep aqueous liquids into overlying aquifers. This potential for upward fluid migration is largely unquantified as monitoring abandoned wells is rarely done, and leakage may go unnoticed especially when in deeper aquifers. This study performs a proximity analysis between old abandoned wells and HF, EOR, and SWD wells, and identifies commingled old abandoned wellbores, which are those wells where groundwater may flow from one aquifer to one or more other aquifers, to identify the locations with the greatest potential for upward aqueous fluid migration at three study sites in the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin. Our analysis indicates that at all three study sites there are several locations where HF, EOR, or SWD operations are located in close proximity to a given old abandoned well. Much of this overlap occurs in formations above typically produced hydrocarbon reservoirs but below exploited potable aquifers, otherwise known as the intermediate zone, which is often connected between abandonment plugs in old abandoned wells. Information on the intermediate zone is often lacking, and this study suggests that unanticipated alterations to groundwater flow systems within the intermediate zone may be occurring. Results indicate the need for more field-based research on the intermediate zone.

A Quantitative Evaluation Method of Anti-Sloughing Drilling Fluid Inhibition for Deep Mudstone

Wellbore instability resulting from deep mudstone hydration severely restricts the development of oil and gas resources from deep reservoir in western China. Accurate evaluation of drilling fluid inhibition properties plays an important role in selecting drilling fluid that can control deep mudstone hydration and then sustain wellbore stability. The previous evaluations are conducted by qualitative analysis and cannot consider the influence of complex hydration conditions of deep mudstone (high temperature, high pressure and flushing action). The study proposes a quantitative method to evaluate drilling fluid’s inhibition property for deep mudstone under natural drilling conditions. In this method, the cohesive strength of mudstone after hydration is adopted as the inhibition index of the tested drilling fluid. An experimental platform containing a newly designed HPHT (High pressure and high temperature) hydration experiment apparatus and mechanics characterization of mudstone after hydration based on scratch test is proposed to obtain the current inhibition index of tested drilling fluid under deep well drilling environments. Based on the mechanical–chemical wellbore stability model considering strength weakening characteristics of deep mudstone after hydration, a cross-correlation between drilling fluid density (collapse pressure) and required inhibition index (cohesive strength) for deep mudstone is provided as the quantitative evaluation criterion. Once the density of tested mud is known, one can confirm whether the inhibition property of tested mud is sufficient. In this study, the JDK mudstone of a K block in western China is selected as the application object of the proposed evaluation method. Firstly, the evaluation chart, which can demonstrate the required inhibition indexes of the tested fluids quantitatively with various densities for JDK mudstone, is constructed. Furthermore, the experimental evaluations of inhibition indexes of drilling fluids taken from two wells in K block are conducted under ambient and deep-well drilling conditions, respectively. In order to show the validity and advantage of the proposed method, a comparison between the laboratory evaluation results and field data is made. Results show that the laboratory evaluation results under deep-well drilling conditions are consistent with the field data. However, the evaluation under ambient conditions overestimates the inhibition property of the tested fluid and brings a risk of wellbore instability. The developed quantitative method can be a new way to evaluate and optimize the inhibition property of drilling fluid for deep mudstone.

Gaussian process regression to determine water content of methane: Application to methane transport modeling

The uncontrolled release of methane from natural gas wells may pose risks to shallow groundwater resources. Numerical modeling of methane migration from deep hydrocarbon formations towards shallow systems requires knowledge of phase behavior of the water-methane system, usually calculated by classic thermodynamic approaches. This study presents a Gaussian process regression (GPR) model to estimate water content of methane gas using pressure and temperature as input parameters. Bayesian optimization algorithm was implemented to tune hyper-parameters of the GPR model. The GPR predictions were evaluated with experimental data as well as four thermodynamic models. The results revealed that the predictions of the GPR are in good correspondence with experimental data having a MSE value of 3.127 × 10^-7 and R² of 0.981. Furthermore, the analysis showed that the GPR model exhibits an acceptable performance comparing with the well-known thermodynamic models. The GPR predicts the water content of methane over widespread ranges of pressure and temperature with a degree of accuracy needed for typical subsurface engineering applications.

Fracturing Fluids and Their Application in the Republic of Croatia

Hydraulic fracturing operations are performed to enhance well performance and to achieve economic success from improved production rates and the ultimate reserve recovery. To achieve these goals, fracturing fluid is pumped into the well at rates and pressures that result in the creation of a hydraulic fracture. Fracturing fluid selection presents the main requirement for the successful performance of hydraulic fracturing. The selected fracturing fluid should create a fracture with sufficient width and length for proppant placement and should carry the proppant from the surface to the created fracture. To accomplish all those demands, additives are added in fluids to adjust their properties. This paper describes the classification of fracturing fluids, additives for the adjustment of fluid properties and the requirements for fluid selection. Furthermore, laboratory tests of fracturing fluid, fracture stimulation design steps are presented in the paper, as well as a few examples of fracturing fluids used in Croatia with case studies and finally, hydraulic fracturing performance and post-frac well production results. The total gas production was increased by 43% and condensate production by 106% in selected wells including wellhead pressure, which allowed for a longer production well life.

Effect of Water Distribution on Spontaneous Imbibition of Tight Rocks: A Fractal Approach

The original water distribution characteristic plays an important role in the fracturing liquid retention in actual tight reservoirs. In this paper, an analytical model was proposed to characterize the water distribution and its effect on the spontaneous imbibition, based on the capillary tube model and fractal theory. Furthermore, the effect of the water film and the non-piston-like front related to the pore size are included in our model. The proposed model was successfully validated with the experimental results of core imbibition tests. Our work demonstrates that water distribution is influenced by displacement pressure and pore structure. For a small differential pressure, the porous media with richer large pores usually possesses a lower water saturation, and this difference will decrease with the increase of differential pressure. Moreover, compared with previous studies, the proposed imbibition model can not only distinguish the valid pores and invalid pores for imbibition but it can also predict the initial imbibition rate and equilibrium time of tight porous media with different water saturation. The results show that the equilibrium time is controlled by the minimum effective pore radius while the initial imbibition rate is mainly controlled by the large pores. Both of these two parameters will decrease with an increase of water saturation; the former is more sensitive to a low water saturation, while the latter decreases more quickly for a middle-high water saturation.

Promotion of RES in a Technology Transfer Network. Case Study of the Enterprise Europe Network

The promotion of renewable energy is a key concept in the European Union for both environmental and economic reasons. It contributes to securing the objectives set out in the Kyoto Protocol. In addition, it brings various social and economic benefits, e.g., diversification of the energy offer, new jobs, improvement of regional and local development opportunities and building a solid national industry. The main purpose of the article is to contribute to the debate on the instruments promoting renewable energy sources (RES) by emphasizing its importance within the technology transfer network. The subject is an empirical study of an actual technology transfer network. Its international activity promotes RES among entrepreneurs. Data related to meetings as part of brokerage events (BE) and company missions (CM) were subject to statistical and visual analysis, based on the data obtained from the Enterprise Europe Network from the years 2017–2018. The presented results are the foundation for future theoretical and practical studies. One of the important aspects to be examined is the intensity of cooperation launched during CM and BE. It is related to the results of partnership agreements and the importance of increasing the knowledge flow and creating opportunities for partners to acquire foreign technologies.

Calibration of the Interaction Parameters between the Proppant and Fracture Wall and the Effects of These Parameters on Proppant Distribution

Saltation and reputation (creep) dominate proppant transport rather than suspension during slickwater fracturing, due to the low sand-carrying capacity of the slickwater. Thus, the interaction parameters between proppants and fracture walls, which affect saltation and reputation, play a more critical role in proppant transport. In this paper, a calibration method for the interaction parameters between proppants and walls is built. A three-dimensional coupled computational fluid dynamics–discrete element method (CFD–DEM) model is established to study the effects of the interaction parameters on proppant migration, considering the wall roughness and unevenly distributed diameters of proppants. The simulation results show that a lower static friction coefficient and rolling friction coefficient can result in a smaller equilibrium height of the sand bank and a smaller build angle and drawdown angle, which is beneficial for carrying the proppant to the distal end of the fracture. The wall roughness and the unevenly distributed diameter of the proppants increase the collision between proppant and proppant or the wall, whereas the interactions have little impact on the sandbank morphology, slightly increasing the equilibrium height of the sandbank.

Experimental Study of Fracture Propagation: The Application in Energy Mining

Hydraulic fracturing has been widely used in recent years as a key technology to improve energy mining efficiency in petroleum and geothermal industries. Laboratory hydraulic fracturing experiments recently were completed in six large-scale 300 × 300 × 300 mm rock specimens to better understand this complex process of hydraulic fracturing. When injection flow rate increases from 5 to 30 mL/min. The fracture initiation pressures and breakdown pressures increase, the propagation times and post-fracturing pressures decrease. The fracture geometries are observed and analyzed, mean injection power is proposed and results show that it could be used to roughly estimate the fracture total lengths. Moreover, the fracture permeabilities based on the pressure data are calculated and linearly ascend with the increase of injection flow rates. These results can provide some reasonable advice for implementing hydraulic fracturing reservoir simulations and improving energy production efficiency on application to field-scale operation.

Nonlinear Autoregressive Neural Networks to Predict Hydraulic Fracturing Fluid Leakage into Shallow Groundwater

Hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells is an essential technology for the exploitation of unconventional resources, but led to environmental concerns. Fracturing fluid upward migration from deep gas reservoirs along abandoned wells may pose contamination threats to shallow groundwater. This study describes the novel application of a nonlinear autoregressive (NAR) neural network to estimate fracturing fluid flow rate to shallow aquifers in the presence of an abandoned well. The NAR network is trained using the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) and Bayesian Regularization (BR) algorithms and the results were compared to identify the optimal network architecture. For NAR-LM model, the coefficient of determination (R2) between measured and predicted values is 0.923 and the mean squared error (MSE) is 4.2 × 10−4, and the values of R2 = 0.944 and MSE = 2.4 × 10−4 were obtained for the NAR-BR model. The results indicate the robustness and compatibility of NAR-LM and NAR-BR models in predicting fracturing fluid flow rate to shallow aquifers. This study shows that NAR neural networks can be useful and hold considerable potential for assessing the groundwater impacts of unconventional gas development.

Solute Reactive Tracers for Hydrogeological Applications: A Short Review and Future Prospects

Tracer testing is a mature technology used for characterizing aquatic flow systems. To gain more insights from tracer tests a combination of conservative (non-reactive) tracers together with at least one reactive tracer is commonly applied. The reactive tracers can provide unique information about physical, chemical, and/or biological properties of aquatic systems. Although, previous review papers provide a wide coverage on conservative tracer compounds there is no systematic review on reactive tracers yet, despite their extensive development during the past decades. This review paper summarizes the recent development in compounds and compound classes that are exploitable and/or have been used as reactive tracers, including their systematization based on the underlying process types to be investigated. Reactive tracers can generally be categorized into three groups: (1) partitioning tracers, (2) kinetic tracers, and (3) reactive tracers for partitioning. The work also highlights the potential for future research directions. The recent advances from the development of new tailor-made tracers might overcome existing limitations.

Application of Water Fracturing in Geothermal Energy Mining: Insights from Experimental Investigations

Currently, water fracturing under deep geothermal conditions remains poorly understood because the reservoir rocks are usually high-strength crystalline rocks characterized by high temperatures. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of rock properties, injection rates, and temperatures on hydraulic fracturing behavior and the induced crack characteristics through experimental investigations. A series of hydraulic fracturing experiments was conducted on two Indosinian granite types to investigate the differences in hydraulic fracturing behavior caused by rock properties. Among others, six samples were tested under a room-temperature condition at different injection rates from 1 to 30 mL/min to clarify the effect of the injection rate and three samples were tested under a high-temperature condition (150 °C) to simulate specific geothermal environments. The results indicated that granites with different rock properties have different injection rate thresholds. When the injection rate is below the threshold, the injection pressure finally reached a constant value without fracturing. For rocks with the same properties, the temperature effect can lead to a high injection rate threshold due to the occurrence of thermally-induced cracks. The number of acoustic emission events recorded during the room-temperature experiments increased linearly with increasing injection rate, while high-temperature tests increased sharply. The investigation results imply that a complex hydraulically-induced crack network is expected to be achieved in geothermal reservoirs by a high injection rate or high temperature differences (between injected fluid and rock). Additionally, the characteristics of the hydraulically-induced cracks were investigated by cutting through the sample blocks and measuring the residual pressure. The results indicated that the induced crack aperture can maintain a fluid conductivity of 0.1–0.8 mm/s at a closure pressure of 12 MPa.
