Spleen-targeted delivery systems and strategies for spleen-related diseases

The spleen, body's largest secondary lymphoid organ, is also a vital hematopoietic and immunological organ. It is regarded as one of the most significant organs in humans. As more researchers recognize the functions of the spleen, clinical methods for treating splenic diseases and spleen-targeted drug delivery systems to improve the efficacy of spleen-related therapies have gradually developed. Many modification strategies (size, charge, ligand, protein corona) and hitchhiking strategies (erythrocytes, neutrophils) of nanoparticles (NPs) have shown a significant increase in spleen targeting efficiency. However, most of the targeted drug therapy strategies for the spleen are to enhance or inhibit the immune function of the spleen to achieve therapeutic effects, and there are few studies on spleen-related diseases. In this review, we not only provide a detailed summary of the design rules for spleen-targeted drug delivery systems in recent years, but also introduce common spleen diseases (splenic tumors, splenic injuries, and splenomegaly) with the hopes of generating more ideas for future spleen research.

Organic functional substance engineered living materials for biomedical applications

Modifying living materials with organic functional substances (OFS) is a convenient and effective strategy to control and monitor the transport, engraftment, and secretion processes in living organisms. OFSs, including small organic molecules and organic polymers, own the merit of design flexibility, satisfying performance, and excellent biocompatibility, which allow for living materials functionalization to realize real-time sensing, controlled drug release, enhanced biocompatibility, accurate diagnosis, and precise treatment. In this review, we discuss the different principles of OFS modification on living materials and demonstrate the applications of engineered living materials in health monitoring, drug delivery, wound healing, and tissue regeneration.

Enhancing mesenchymal stem cell survival and homing capability to improve cell engraftment efficacy for liver diseases

Although mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) transplantation provides an alternative strategy for end-stage liver disease (ESLD), further widespread application of MSC therapy is limited owing to low cell engraftment efficiency. Improving cell engraftment efficiency plays a critical role in enhancing MSC therapy for liver diseases. In this review, we summarize the current status and challenges of MSC transplantation for ESLD. We also outline the complicated cell-homing process and highlight how low cell engraftment efficiency is closely related to huge differences in extracellular conditions involved in MSC homing journeys ranging from constant, controlled conditions in vitro to variable and challenging conditions in vivo. Improving cell survival and homing capabilities enhances MSC engraftment efficacy. Therefore, we summarize the current strategies, including hypoxic priming, drug pretreatment, gene modification, and cytokine pretreatment, as well as splenectomy and local irradiation, used to improve MSC survival and homing capability, and enhance cell engraftment and therapeutic efficiency of MSC therapy. We hope that this review will provide new insights into enhancing the efficiency of MSC engraftment in liver diseases.

Efficient delivery of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells to injured liver by surface PEGylation

BACKGROUND

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) have been used in clinical trials for various diseases. These have certain notable functions such as homing to inflammation sites, tissue repair, and immune regulation. In many pre-clinical studies, MSCs administered into peripheral veins demonstrated effective therapeutic outcomes. However, most of the intravenously administered MSCs were entrapped in the lung, and homing to target sites was less than 1%. This occurred mainly because of the adhesion of MSCs to vascular endothelial cells in the lung. To prevent this adhesion, we modified the surface of MSCs with polyethylene glycol (PEG; a biocompatible polymer) using the avidin-biotin complex (ABC) method.

METHODS

The surface of MSCs was modified with PEG using the ABC method. Then, the cell adhesion to mouse aortic endothelial cells and the tissue distribution of PEG-modified MSCs were evaluated. Moreover, the homing to the injured liver and therapeutic effect of PEG-modified MSCs were evaluated using carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver failure model mice.

RESULTS

The PEG modification significantly suppressed the adhesion of MSCs to cultured mouse aortic endothelial cells as well as the entrapment of MSCs in the lungs after intravenous injection in mice. PEG-modified MSCs efficiently homed to the injured liver of carbon tetrachloride-induced acute liver failure model mice. More importantly, the cells significantly suppressed serum transaminase levels and leukocyte infiltration into the injured liver.

CONCLUSION

These results indicate that PEG modification to the surface of MSCs can suppress the lung entrapment of intravenously administered MSCs and improve their homing to the injured liver.

Lipophilic Anchors that Embed Bioconjugates in Bilayer Membranes: A Review

A wide range of biomaterials and engineered cell surfaces are composed of bioconjugates embedded in liposome membranes, surface-immobilized bilayers, or the plasma membranes of living cells. This review article summarizes the various ways that Nature anchors integral and peripheral proteins in a cell membrane and describes the strategies devised by chemical biologists to label a membrane protein in living cells. Also discussed are modern synthetic and semisynthetic methods to produce lipidated proteins. Subsequent sections describe methods to anchor a three-component synthetic construct that is composed of a lipophilic membrane anchor, hydrophilic linker, and exposed functional component. The surface exposed payload can be a fluorophore, aptamer, oligonucleotide, polypeptide, peptide nucleic acid, polysaccharide, branched dendrimer, or linear polymer. Hydrocarbon chains are commonly used as the membrane anchor, and a general experimental trend is that a two chain lipid anchor has higher membrane affinity than a cholesteryl or single chain lipid anchor. Amphiphilic fluorescent dyes are effective molecular probes for cell membrane imaging and a zwitterionic linker between the fluorophore and the lipid anchor promotes high persistence in the plasma membrane of living cells. A relatively new advance is the development of switchable membrane anchors as molecular tools for fundamental studies or as technology platforms for applied biomaterials.

Lipid-mediated ex vivo cell surface engineering for augmented cellular functionalities

Once administrated, intercellular adhesion to recognize and/or arrest target cells is essential for specific treatments, especially for cancer or tumor. However, immune cells administrated into the tumor-microenvironment could lose their intrinsic functionalities such as target recognition ability, resulting in an ineffective cancer immunotherapy. Various manipulation techniques for decorating functional moieties onto cell surface and enhancing target recognition have been developed. A hydrophobic interaction-mediated ex-vivo cell surface engineering using lipid-based biomaterials could be a state-of-the-art engineering technique that could achieve high-efficiency cell surface modification by a single method without disturbance of intrinsic characteristics of cells. In this regard, this review provides design principles for the development of lipid-based biomaterials with a linear structure of lipid, polyethylene glycol, and functional group, strategies for the synthesis process, and their practical applications in biomedical engineering. Especially, we provide new insights into the development of a novel surface coating techniques for natural killer (NK) cells with engineering decoration of cancer targeting moieties on their cell surfaces. Among immune cells, NK cells are interesting cell population for substituting T cells because of their excellent safety and independent anticancer efficacy. Thus, optimal strategies to select cancer-type-specific targeting moieties and present them onto the surface of immune cells (especially, NK cells) using lipid-based biomaterials could provide additional tools to capture cancer cells for developing novel immune cell therapy products. Enhanced anticancer efficacies by surface-engineered NK cells have been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. Therefore, it could be speculated that recent progresses in cell surface modification technology via lipid-based biomaterials could strengthen immune surveillance and immune synapses for utilization in a next-generation cancer immunotherapy, beyond currently available genetic engineering tool such as chimeric antigen receptor-mediated immune cell modulation.

Strategies for improving adipose-derived stem cells for tissue regeneration

Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have promising applications in tissue regeneration. Currently, there are only a few ADSC products that have been approved for clinical use. The clinical application of ADSCs still faces many challenges. Here, we review emerging strategies to improve the therapeutic efficacy of ADSCs in tissue regeneration. First, a great quantity of cells is often needed for the stem cell therapies, which requires the advanced cell expansion technologies. In addition cell-derived products are also required for the development of ‘cell-free’ therapies to overcome the drawbacks of cell-based therapies. Second, it is necessary to strengthen the regenerative functions of ADSCs, including viability, differentiation and paracrine ability, for the tissue repair and regeneration required for different physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Third, poor delivery efficiency also restricts the therapeutic effect of ADSCs. Effective methods to improve cell delivery include alleviating harsh microenvironments, enhancing targeting ability and prolonging cell retention. Moreover, we also point out some critical issues about the sources, effectiveness and safety of ADSCs. With these advanced strategies to improve the therapeutic efficacy of ADSCs, ADSC-based treatment holds great promise for clinical applications in tissue regeneration.

Effective and prolonged targeting of a nanocarrier to the inflammation site by functionalization with ZnBPMP and chitosan

Efficient and selective targeting of inflamed tissues/organs is critical for diagnosis and therapy. Although nanomaterials themselves have an intrinsic advantage due to their size for targeting inflammation sites, additional functionalization of the nanomaterials with proper targeting moieties is desired to enhance the targeting efficiency. In this study, we aimed to improve the inflammation targeting characteristics of a pluronic-based nanocarrier, which has advantages as a nanosized delivery cargo for diverse molecules, by conjugating with chitosan and ZnBPMP (two Zn(II) ions chelated 2,6-bis[(bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino)-methyl]-4-methylphenol) moiety. Specific and significant cellular uptake and interaction between the nanocarrier functionalized with ZnBPMP ligand and chitosan to an apoptosis-induced immune cell line were observed in vitro. An inflammation model in the mouse ear caused by skin hypersensitivity was used to evaluate the effect of functionalization with chitosan and ZnBPMP moiety by comparing with various control groups. Functionalization of the nanocarrier with chitosan greatly enhanced the in vivo circulation time of the nanocarrier, so prolonged targeting ability of the nanocarrier to the inflamed ear was achieved. Additional ZnBPMP functionalization to chitosan-functionalized nanocarrier also resulted in significantly improved initial targeting and further enhancement in the targeting until 5 days to the inflamed ear and the decreased non-specific accumulation of the nanocarrier to the remaining body. Thus, developed nanocarrier has a high potential as a drug delivery carrier as well as a diagnostic agent to the inflammation sites.

Mesenchymal stem cells, exosomes and exosome-mimics as smart drug carriers for targeted cancer therapy

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells with the capacity to differentiate into several cell types under appropriate conditions. They also possess remarkable antitumor features that make them a novel choice to treat cancers. Accumulating evidence suggest that the MSCs-derived extracellular vesicles, known as exosomes, play an essential role in the therapeutic effects of MSCs mainly by carrying biologically active factors. However, limitations such as low yield of exosomes and difficulty in isolation and purification hinder their clinical applications. To overcome these issues, research on development of exosome-mimics has attracted great attention. This systematic review represents, to the best of our knowledge, the first thorough evaluations of the innate antineoplastic features of MSCs-derived exosomes or exosome-mimics, the methods of drug loading, application as drug delivery system and their impacts on targeted cancer therapy. Importantly, we dissect the commonalities and differences as well as address the shortcomings of work accumulated over the last two decades and discuss how this information can serve as a guide map for optimal experimental design implementation ultimately aiding the effective transition into clinical trials.

Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells as next-generation drug delivery vehicles for cancer therapeutics

INTRODUCTION

Drug delivery to solid tumors remains a significant therapeutic challenge. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) home to tumor tissues and can be employed as tumor targeted drug/gene delivery vehicles. Reportedly, therapeutic gene- or anti-cancer drug-loaded MSCs have shown remarkable anti-tumor effects in preclinical studies, and some clinical trials for assessing therapeutic MSCs in patients with cancer have been registered.

AREAS COVERED

In the present review, we first discuss the source and interdonor heterogeneity of MSCs, their tumor-homing mechanism, and the route of MSC administration in MSC-based cancer therapy. We then summarize the therapeutic applications of MSCs as a drug delivery vehicle for therapeutic genes or anti-cancer drugs and the drug delivery mechanism from drug-loaded MSCs to cancer cells.

EXPERT OPINION

Although numerous preclinical studies have revealed significant anti-tumor effects, several clinical trials assessing MSC-based cancer gene therapy have failed to demonstrate corroborative results, documenting limited therapeutic effects. Notably, a successful clinical outcome with MSC-based cancer therapy would require the interdonor heterogeneity of administered MSCs to be resolved, along with improved tumor-homing efficiency and optimized drug delivery efficiency from MSCs to cancer cells.

Nanozyme Impregnated Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Hepatic Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Alleviation

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) based therapy holds great potential for treating numerous diseases owing to their capability to heal injured tissue/organs through paracrine factors secretion and immunomodulation. Despite the high hopes, the low viability of transplanted cells in the injured tissues due to the elevated oxidative stress levels remains the largest obstacle in MSC-based cell therapy. To achieve desired therapeutic efficiency, the survival of the transplanted MSCs in the high oxidative stress environment needs to be ensured. Herein, we proposed the use of a ROS-scavenging nanozyme to protect transplanted MSCs from oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis and thereby improve the therapeutic effect. Prussian blue (PB) nanoparticles as a biocompatible ROS-scavenging nanozyme were incorporated into the MSCs without affecting the stemness and differentiation potential of MSCs. The nanozyme impregnation significantly improved the survival of MSCs in a high oxidative stress condition as well as augmented their paracrine effect and anti-inflammatory properties, resulting in a profound therapeutic effect in vivo in the liver ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury animal model. Our results indicated that the nanozyme incorporation into MSCs is a simple but efficient way to improve the therapeutic potential of MSC-based cell therapy.

Lipophilic recombinant-protein insertion endows lymphocytes with enhanced targeting-infiltration ability in EGFR positive cancer

Adoptive T cell transfer is one of the most promising ways to combat solid tumors. However, the weak infiltration of T cells into tumor sites has restricted their antitumor efficacy. To overcome this obstacle, we used the lipophilic protein painting strategy to improve tumor targeting and penetrating capacity of lymphocytes for the first time. We synthesized the lipid anchor consisting of a bispecific recombinant protein iRGD-antiEGFR and DSPE-PEG derivates, then successfully inserted it into the membranes of T cells. This surface modification was non-invasive and could efficiently improve the infiltration ability of T cells into multicellular spheroids and tumor masses. The surface modified T cells also displayed superior antitumor activities in EGFR-positive tumor xenografts via systematic infusion. Moreover, the permeability and antitumor efficacy of these surface painted T cells could be remarkably enhanced when used in combination with local low-dose irradiation.

Current advances and challenges of mesenchymal stem cells-based drug delivery system and their improvements

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have recently emerged as a promising living carrier for targeted drug delivery. A wealth of literature has shown evidence for great advances in MSCs-based drug delivery system (MSCs-DDS) in the treatment of various diseases. Nevertheless, as this field of study rapidly advances, several challenges associated with this delivery strategy have arisen, mainly due to the inherent limitations of MSCs. To this end, several novel technologies are being developed in parallel to improve the efficiency or safety of this system. In this review, we introduce recent advances and summarize the present challenges of MSCs-DDS. We also highlight some potential technologies to improve MSCs-DDS, including nanotechnology, genome engineering technology, and biomimetic technology. Finally, prospects for application of artificially improved MSCs-DDS are addressed. The technologies summarized in this review provide a general guideline for the improvement of MSCs-DDS.

Atraumatic Splenic Rupture in a Patient on Apixaban and Dual Antiplatelet Therapy

Splenic rupture due to any cause is a life-threatening complication and commonly attributed to trauma. Atraumatic splenic rupture is very rarely reported, and the incidence is currently unknown. Anticoagulants and dual anti-platelet medication can increase the chances of a splenic rupture. Surgical removal of the spleen may be warranted to prevent a life-threatening bleeding. Early identification and intervention are required for most patients as only a few qualify for medical management.

Recent advances in mesenchymal stem cell membrane-coated nanoparticles for enhanced drug delivery

Studies of nanomedicine have achieved dramatic progress in recent decades. However, the main challenges that traditional nanomedicine has to overcome include low accumulation at target sites and rapid clearance from the blood circulation. An interesting approach using cell membrane coating technology has emerged as a possible way to overcome these limitations, owing to the enhanced targeted delivery and reduced immunogenicity of cell membrane moieties. Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has been investigated for treating various diseases, ranging from inflammatory diseases to tissue damage. Recent studies with engineered modified MSCs or MSC membranes have focused on enhancing cell therapeutic efficacy. Therefore, bioengineering strategies that couple synthetic nanoparticles with MSC membranes have recently received much attention due to their homing ability and tumor tropism. Given the various membrane receptors on their surfaces, MSC membrane-coated nanoparticles are an effective method with selective targeting properties, allowing entry into specific cells. Here, we review recent progress on the use of MSC membrane-coated nanoparticles for biomedical applications, particularly in the two main antitumor and anti-inflammatory fields. The combination of a bioengineered cell membrane and synthesized nanoparticles presents a wide range of possibilities for the further development of targeted drug delivery, showing the potential to enhance the therapeutic efficacy for treating various diseases.

Significantly enhanced recovery of acute liver failure by liver targeted delivery of stem cells via heparin functionalization

Acute liver failure (ALF) occurs by insufficient detoxification of toxic materials in the liver, generating excess reactive oxygen species (ROS). Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy can be a promising approach for the treatment of liver diseases including ALF by anti-inflammatory activity and secretion of cytokines associated with tissue regeneration. However, the efficacy of MSC therapy is generally poor, mainly due to a low survival and engraftment of administered cells. In this study, we demonstrated that the enhanced delivery of human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) to the damaged liver by the coating of lipid-conjugated heparin could result in significantly improved recovery from ALF in a mouse model. First, the therapeutic effect of secretomes of hADSCs on acetaminophen (APAP)-induced hepatic cell damage was confirmed regardless of the coating of lipid-conjugated heparin on hADSCs in vitro. Then, the therapeutic effects of lipid-conjugated heparin coated hADSCs (Lip-Hep/hADSC group) were analyzed compared to hADSCs themselves (hADSC group) using an APAP-induced ALF model in vivo. Intravenous administration of hADSCs could lower the elevated serum levels of aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT), but Lip-Hep/hADSC group showed faster decrease in serum levels of AST and ALT to the normal values compared to hADSC group. Enhanced delivery and longer retention of hADSCs in the damage liver by the coating of lipid-conjugated heparin were confirmed by optical imaging of isolated organs using labeled cells and immunofluorescence staining of liver tissue sections against human nuclei. A significantly increased level of human hepatic growth factor (hHGF), a representative secretome from hADSC, significantly reduced levels of macrophage and CYP2E1, implying alleviated inflammatory response, were detected by immunofluorescence staining from Lip-Hep/hADSC group compared to hADSC group. These results well coincided with the improved recovery of the damaged liver from Lip-Hep/hADSC group than hADSC group in histological analysis. Thus, the coating of lipid-conjugated heparin on hADSCs has a great potential to improve the therapeutic effect of cells on the liver injury.

Rapid and Versatile Cell Aggregate Formation Using Lipid-Conjugated Heparin

Cell aggregates hold significant therapeutic promise for in vitro cell analysis, ex vivo tissue models, and in vivo cell therapy and tissue engineering. Traditional methods of making cell aggregates require long incubation times and can only produce three-dimensional-spheroid-shaped aggregates. We propose a novel method of making cell aggregates of diverse sizes and shapes using lipid-conjugated heparin. Shaking the cell suspension containing a small amount of lipid-conjugated heparin for approximately 30 min produced cell aggregates. This approach can be applied to any cell type, including stem cells, fibroblast cells, and T lymphocytes. The shape of biocompatible templates could modulate the shape of cell aggregates. In addition to layered, multicompartmental cell aggregates on template, template-free, tube-shaped cell aggregates could also be made. The cell aggregates formed were alive and maintained biological activities.

Engineering the Surface of Therapeutic "Living" Cells

Biological cells are complex living machines that have garnered significant attention for their potential to serve as a new generation of therapeutic and delivery agents. Because of their secretion, differentiation, and homing activities, therapeutic cells have tremendous potential to treat or even cure various diseases and injuries that have defied conventional therapeutic strategies. Therapeutic cells can be systemically or locally transplanted. In addition, with their ability to express receptors that bind specific tissue markers, cells are being studied as nano- or microsized drug carriers capable of targeted transport. Depending on the therapeutic targets, these cells may be clustered to promote intercellular adhesion. Despite some impressive results with preclinical studies, there remain several obstacles to their broader development, such as a limited ability to control their transport, engraftment, secretion and to track them in vivo. Additionally, creating a particular spatial organization of therapeutic cells remains difficult. Efforts have recently emerged to resolve these challenges by engineering cell surfaces with a myriad of bioactive molecules, nanoparticles, and microparticles that, in turn, improve the therapeutic efficacy of cells. This review article assesses the various technologies developed to engineer the cell surfaces. The review ends with future considerations that should be taken into account to further advance the quality of cell surface engineering.

Maximized nanodrug-loaded mesenchymal stem cells by a dual drug-loaded mode for the systemic treatment of metastatic lung cancer

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), exhibiting tumor-tropic and migratory potential, can serve as cellular carriers to improve the effectiveness of anticancer agents. However, several challenges, such as the safety issue, the limited drug loading, the conservation of stemness and migration of MSCs, still remain in the MSC-based delivery system. In the present study, a novel nano-engineered MSC delivery system was established by loading doxorubicin (DOX)-polymer conjugates for the systemic treatment of pulmonary metastasis of breast cancer. For the first time, a dual drug-loaded mode, endocytosis and membrane-bound, was adopted to achieve the maximum amount of DOX conjugates in MSCs. The in vitro studies revealed the loaded MSCs possessed multifunctional properties, including preservation of the stemness and migration of MSCs, excellent stability of drug loading, acid sensitive drug release and obvious cytotoxicity against 4T1 cells. The in vivo studies confirmed that the loaded MSCs mainly located and long stayed in the lung where the foci of metastatic tumor situated. Importantly, loaded MSCs can significantly inhibit the tumor growth and prolong the life span of tumor-bearing mice in contrast with DOX and DOX-conjugate. The present loaded MSCs system suggested a promising strategy to solve several issues existed in cell-based delivery systems. Especially for the problem of low drug loading, the strategy, simultaneously loading nanodrug in cells' internal and membrane, might be the most desirable method so far and could be developed as a generalizable manner for cell-mediated tumor-targeted therapy.

Heparin-hyaluronic acid hydrogel in support of cellular activities of 3D encapsulated adipose derived stem cells

We have developed stem cell-responsive, heparin-hyaluronic acid (Hep-HA) hydrogel, crosslinked by thiolated heparin (Hep-SH) and methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HA-MA) via visible light mediated, thiol-ene reaction. Physical properties of the hydrogel (gelation time, storage modulus, and swelling ratio) were tunable by adjusting light intensity, initiator/polymer concentration, and precursor pH. Culture of human adipose derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) using this hydrogel was characterized and compared with the control hydrogels including Hep-PEG hydrogel, PEG-HA hydrogel. Sufficient initial adhesion and continuous proliferation of ADSCs in 2D were observed on both heparin-containing hydrogels (Hep-HA and Hep-PEG hydrogel) in contrast to no adhesion of ADSCs on PEG-HA hydrogel. On the other hand, in the case of 3D culture of encapsulated ADSCs, efficient cellular activities such as spreading, proliferation, migration, and differentiation of ADSCs were only observed in soft Hep-HA hydrogel compared to Hep-PEG or PEG-HA hydrogel with the similar modulus. The upregulated expressions of hyaluronidases in ADSCs encapsulated in Hep-HA hydrogel compared to the control hydrogels and effective degradation of the hydrogel by hyaluronidase imply that the degradation of hydrogel was necessary for 3D cellular activities. Thus, Hep-HA hydrogel, where heparin acts as a binding domain for ADSCs and HA acts as a degradation site by cell secreted enzymes, was efficient for 3D culture of human ADSCs without any additional modification using biological/chemical molecules.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

Stem cell-responsive hydrogel composed of heparin and hyaluronic acid was prepared by visible light-mediated thiol-ene reaction. Without additional modification using functional peptides for cell adhesion and matrix degradation, ADSCs encapsulated in this hydrogel showed efficient cellular activities such as spreading, proliferation, migration, and differentiation of ADSCs whereas control hydrogels missing heparin or hyaluronic acid could not support cellular activities in 3D. In this hydrogel, heparin mainly acts as a binding domain for stem cells and hyaluronic acid mainly acts as a degradation site by ADSC secreted enzymes, but interrelated synergistic functions of heparin and HA were observed. Therefore, we speculate that this hydrogel can serve as a promising carrier for stem cell based therapy and various tissue engineering applications.
