Outcome of Endodontic Treatment: The Most Cited Publications

INTRODUCTION

Bibliographic analysis using quantitative measurements such as citation number and citation density is a common method used to evaluate the impact of previously published studies on current research. Several bibliographic endodontic studies ranking publications based on their number of citations have been published. However, to date, a focus on the most cited articles related to the outcome of endodontic treatment is lacking. The purpose of this study was to identify the most cited publications and their citation density as related to the outcome of nonsurgical root canal treatment (NSRCT), nonsurgical root canal retreatment (NSRCR), and root canal surgery (RCS).

METHODS

A search of all citations regarding the outcome of NSRCT, NSRCR, and RCS was performed using the Web of Science platform. The search included key words covering all relevant categories. Only publications in the English language published between May 1960 and July 2021 were included. The publications were divided into the following groups: NSRCT, NSRCR, and RCS. Each group was further subdivided into experimentation studies and review studies. The publications were analyzed and sorted in descending order according to the number of citations that each publication has received. Only publications with 100 citations or more were included. Citation density was also assessed.

RESULTS

The total number of NSRCT citations found was 257; 221 (86%) were experimentation studies, and 36 (14%) were review studies. Of the 221 NSRCT experimentation studies, 41 (18.55%) had 100 citations or more. Of the 36 NSRCT review studies, 9 (25%) had 100 citations or more. The total number of NSRCR citations found was 61; 51 (83.6%) were experimentation studies, and 10 (16.4%) were review studies. Of the 51 NSRCR experimentation studies, 5 (9.8%) had 100 citations or more. Of the 10 NSRCR review studies, 2 (20%) had 100 citations or more. The total number of RCS citations found was 119; 90 (75.6%) were experimentation studies, and 29 (24.4%) were review studies. Of the 90 RCS experimentation studies, 11 (12.2%) had 100 citations or more. Of the 29 RCS review studies, 2 (6.9%) had 100 citations or more. In total, 70 publications on the outcome of endodontic treatment had 100 or more citations. Fifty publications (71.4%) pertained to the NSRCT groups, 7 publications (10%) to the NSRCR groups, and 13 publications (18.6%) to the RCS groups.

CONCLUSIONS

Bibliographic analysis is a beneficial aid for assessing the impact of publications studying the outcome of endodontic treatment on the field of endodontics.

A bibliometric analysis of the 50 most influential publications on distal biceps repair

PURPOSE

The purpose of this bibliometric study was to identify and analyze the most cited publications on acute distal biceps repair.

METHODS

Using the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science database, we searched for the top 50 most cited publications on acute distal biceps repair and analyzed them based on various metrics.

RESULTS

The top 50 publications were cited a total of 3171 times and approximately 151 times per year. However, although the literature on the topic is quite extensive, most publications only contain low-level evidence. In fact, 74% of the 50 most cited publications on the topic contain either level IV or V evidence.

CONCLUSION

This study, through bibliometric analysis, demonstrates that the most often cited studies about acute distal biceps tendon repair are low level of evidence designs. This common injury and study design are ripe for larger randomized or prospective cohort studies.

The Pertinent Literature of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Programs: A Bibliometric Approach

Background and Objectives: The programs of enhanced recovery after surgery are the new revolution in surgical departments; however, features of this concept have not been systematically explored. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS)-related research using bibliometric analysis. Materials and Methods: The search strategy of ERAS programs was conducted in the Web of Science database. Bibliometric analysis was further performed by Excel and Bibliometrix software. The relationship between citation counts and Mendeley readers was assessed by linear regression analysis. Results: 8539 studies from 1994-2019 were included in the present research, with reporting studies originating from 91 countries using 18 languages. The United States (US) published the greatest number of articles. International cooperation was discovered in 82 countries, with the most cooperative country being the United Kingdom. Henrik Kehlet was found to have published the highest number of studies. The journal Anesthesia and Analgesia had the largest number of articles. Linear regression analysis presented a strong positive correlation between citations and Mendeley readers. Most research was related to gastrointestinal surgery in this field. Conclusion: This bibliometric analysis shows the current status of ERAS programs from multiple perspectives, and it provides reference and guidance to scholars for further research.

The Upsurge in Research and Publication on Articular Cartilage Repair in the Last 10 Years

This study aims to study the publication trends in articular cartilage repair (ACR) techniques, over the last 10 years. A literature search was performed on the PubMed, Web of Science, and SCOPUS databases. We used suitable keywords and Boolean operators (articular cartilage injury AND "marrow stimulation OR microfracture (MFx)," "osteochondral autograft," "osteochondral allograft" and "autologous chondrocyte implantation (ACI)," "scaffold"), on January 1, 2019. Trends in publication on these topics were analyzed, focusing on publications over the last 10 years, type of research, authors, institution, and country. There was an increasing trend in publications related to ACR. A search on PubMed revealed 698, 225, 293, 857, and 982 documents on searching for "articular cartilage" AND "marrow stimulation OR microfracture," "osteochondral autograft," "osteochondral allograft," "ACI," and "scaffold," respectively. Similar searches revealed 1154, 219, 330, 1727, and 2742 documents on Web of science and 934, 301, 383, 944, and 2026 on SCOPUS, respectively, in the same order of topics. Overall, most papers were published from the United States and European countries, and Cole BJ was the most published author. There was an increasing trend in the number of publications as well as citations, with international collaboration among researchers. It implies that this field is growing rapidly. The authors from globally recognized and leading clinical institutions in the developed world contributed maximally to these publications. Most of these papers were published in high-impact arthroscopy subspecialty journals. Level of evidence: Level IV.

Top 100 Most-Cited Clinical Studies of Hip and Knee Arthroplasty: The Foundation of Practice

Total number of citations has been considered a proxy for a published study's importance within a given field. However, there are multiple pitfalls to correlating the total number of citations alone with the quality of a study. In this review, the authors aimed to identify the top 100 most-cited studies of hip and knee arthroplasty and then assess study design and quality of reporting. More than half of these studies were level IV evidence, unblinded, not randomized, and not controlled. This underscores the need for higher-quality study design to support practice. The top 10 arthroplasty articles published in last 10 years by Indian authors

Joint replacement surgery is becoming increasingly popular globally and recently,​in India. The phenomenon of medical tourism has also contributed to increasing number of arthroplasty surgeries being done every year in our country. The surgeons who work in this highly specialized field of orthopedic surgery, have been publishing their research work in reputed journals. In this paper, we have discussed the most cited Indian papers in the field of arthroplasty. It was observed that publications in high impact and reputed journals attract more citations and therefore it is recommended that the 'good' scientific research work should preferably be submitted to these journals to create greater impact and awareness about ones' research.
