Optimal Faujasite structures for post combustion CO 2 capture and separation in different swing adsorption processes

Extraction of silica from sugarcane bagasse ash and its utilization in zeolite 4A synthesis for CO2 adsorption

Sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA) is a solid waste containing a high amount of silica (SiO2) and is suitable to utilize as a silica source for synthesizing zeolite NaA. SCBA is typically calcined at high temperatures before silica extraction. The method is not environmentally friendly because it consumes energy and produces CO2. This work demonstrates an alternative extraction method of SiO2 from SCBA by treating it with hydrochloric (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution. The obtained mixture was separated by paper filter No. 1 (P) and a combination of paper filter and syringe filter (PS). The solution was neutralized by HCl solution, producing silica (SiO2-P and SiO2-PS) with a purity of 98 wt%. Both SiO2 samples and SCBA were utilized to synthesize zeolite NaA for CO2 adsorption. The CO2 adsorption capacities of NaA-P and NaA-PS were 4.30 and 4.10 mmol gadsorbent -1, in the same range as commercial NaA. The capacity is influenced by the total basicity of zeolite. The CO2 adsorption behavior of all samples correlates well with the Toth model. The CO2 adsorption kinetics agrees well with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Overall, this work shows the successful extraction of silica via using a direct NaOH solution, yielding high-purity silica sufficient for synthesizing zeolite NaA, a promising adsorbent of CO2.

Importance of Bridging Molecular and Process Modeling to Design Optimal Adsorbents for Large-Scale CO2 Capture

ConspectusCarbon capture, utilization, and storage have been identified as key technologies to decarbonize the energy and industrial sectors. Although postcombustion CO2 capture by absorption in aqueous amines is a mature technology, the required high regeneration energy, losses due to degradation and evaporation, and corrosion carry a high economic cost, precluding this technology to be used today at the scale required to mitigate climate change. Solid adsorbent-based systems with high CO2 capacities, high selectivity, and lower regeneration energy are becoming an attractive alternative for this purpose. Conscious of this opportunity, the search for optimal adsorbents for the capture of CO2 has become an urgent task. To accurately assess the performance of CO2 separation by adsorption at the needed scale, adsorbents should be synthesized and fully characterized under the required operating conditions, and the proper design and simulation of the process should be implemented along with techno-economic and environmental assessments. Several works have examined pure CO2 single-component adsorption or binary mixtures of CO2 with nitrogen for different families of adsorbents, primarily addressing their CO2 adsorption capacity and selectivity; however, very limited data is available under other conditions and/or with impurities, mainly due to the intensive experimental (modeling) efforts required for the large number of adsorbents to be studied, posing a challenge for their assessment under the needed conditions. In this regard, molecular simulations can be employed in synergy with experiments, reliably generating missing adsorption properties of mixtures while providing understanding at the molecular level of the mechanism of the adsorption process.This Account provides an outlook on strategies used for the rational design of materials for CO2 capture from different sources from the understanding of the adsorption mechanism at the molecular level. We illustrate with practical examples from our work and others' work how molecular simulations can be reliably used to link the molecular knowledge of novel adsorbents for which limited data exist for CO2 capture adsorption processes. Molecular simulation results of different adsorbents, including MOFs, zeolites, and carbon-based and silica-based materials, are discussed, focusing on understanding the role of physical and chemical adsorption obtained from simulations and quantifying the impact of impurities in the performance of the materials. Furthermore, simulation results can be used for screening adsorbents from basic key performance indicators, such as cycling the working capacity, selectivity, and energy requirement, or for feeding detailed dynamic models to assess their performance in swing adsorption processes on the industrial scale, additionally including monetized performance indicators such as operating expenses, equipment sizes, and compression cost. Moreover, we highlight the role of molecular simulations in guiding strategies for improving the performance of these materials by functionalization with amines or creating hybrid solid materials. We show how integrating models at different scales provides a robust and reliable assessment of the performance of the adsorbent materials under the required industrial conditions, rationally guiding the search for best performers. Trends in additional computational resources that can be used, including machine learning, and perspectives on practical requirements for leveraging CO2 capture adsorption technologies on the needed scale are also discussed.

Carbon Dioxide Reforming of Methane over Nickel-Supported Zeolites: A Screening Study

As the utilization of zeolites has become more frequent in the dry reforming of methane (DRM) reaction, more systematic studies are required to evaluate properly the influence of zeolites’ composition and framework type on the performance. Therefore, in this work, a step-by-step study was performed with the aim of analyzing the effects of Ni loading (5, 10 or 15 wt.% over USY(3) zeolite), Si/Al ratio (3, 15 or 38 on USY zeolites with 15 wt.% Ni) and framework type (USY, BEA, ZSM-5 or MOR for 15 wt.% Ni and Si/Al ratios of ≈40) on catalysts’ properties and performances. Increasing Ni loadings enhanced CH4 and CO2 conversions even though the catalysts’ stability was decreasing over the time. The variation of the Si/Al ratio on USY and the use of different zeolites had also a remarkable impact on the catalytic performance. For instance, at 500–600 °C reaction temperatures, the catalysts with higher basicity and reducibility exhibited the best results. However, when the temperature was further increased, catalysts presenting stronger metal–support interactions (nickel nanoparticles located in mesoporous cavities) displayed the highest conversions and stability over time. In brief, the use of 15 wt.% Ni and a USY zeolite, with both micro- and mesopores and high surface area, led to the best performances, mainly attributed to a favorable number of Ni0 active sites and the establishment of stronger metal–support interactions (due to nanoparticles confinement inside the mesopores).

Highlighting the Anti-Synergy between Adsorption and Diffusion in Cation-Exchanged Faujasite Zeolites

Using configurational-bias Monte Carlo simulations of adsorption equilibrium and molecular dynamics simulations of guest diffusivities of CO₂, CH₄, N₂, and O₂ in FAU zeolites with varying amounts of extra-framework cations (Na⁺ or Li⁺), we demonstrate that adsorption and diffusion do not, in general, proceed hand-in-hand. Stronger adsorption often implies reduced mobility. The anti-synergy between adsorption and diffusion has consequences for the design and development of pressure-swing adsorption and membrane separation technologies for CO₂ capture and N₂/O₂ separations.

Thermodynamic Properties for Carbon Dioxide

We first report three reliable analytical expressions of the entropy, enthalpy and Gibbs free energy of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and perform predictions of these three thermodynamic quantities on the basis of the proposed analytical expressions and in terms of experimental values of five molecular constants for CO₂. The average relative deviations of the calculated values from the National Institute of Standards and Technology database over the temperature range from 300 to 6000 K are merely 0.053, 0.95, and 0.070%, respectively, for the entropy, enthalpy, and Gibbs free energy. The present predictive expressions are away from the utilization of plenty of experimental spectroscopy data and are applicable to treat CO₂ capture and storage processes.
